listened to tpp s2 Again and I can’t get ben’s line from the monster’s reflection out of my head, what he says when Juno finally figures out why Ben stayed with Sarah: “It wasn’t a good choice. It wasn’t a noble choice. But it was my choice. And I think it’s about time you start letting me take responsibility for my own choices, okay?”
because like, of course this means a lot in context of the Theia Soul, right? That Juno wishes beyond anything that Ben hadn’t stayed with Sarah, hadn’t kept himself in the firing line. Ramses/the Theia Soul would argue that Ben didn’t deserve to die for his choice to have hope that Sarah Steel would get better with him around, or whatever it was.
But deserving isn’t the point. Respect is the point. Ben made his choice, for good or ill, and he deserves the dignity of having that choice acknowledged. Even if it was the wrong choice, you can’t take that away from him.

Thoughts on the Ecosystem of the Western Wastes
Does anyone else think too much abt the inaccurate science in the travellers guide (specifically the bestiary). Cuz. They were wrong. This might just be me being obsessed with ecology but there is so much potential with the whole idea of the Everdeads in the Western Wastes but then they hit us with this:
Which is just? not true??
(This is from a free reward on patreon titled "How to Slay Monsters, by Sir Caroline (and the herbalist, I suppose)", you can look it up on patreon to read it in full)
While they do get the spirit of death being the foundation of all ecosystems, they don't seem to understand that this is the case for every ecosystem. Being at the bottom of the food chain is a completely normal and natural thing. That's just the producer level organism in an ecosystem. Grass does not go extinct because it is eaten- it's very existence as a species relies on the curbing of overpopulation, giving of nutrients and spreading of progeny that herbivores provide.
I love the world of Second Citadel, and I love this idea- of death being the sacred thing that supports all life, taken literally. So I want to go through and indulge my "erm, actually" instinct to correct some stuff in here.
The Everdeads are described as dead, but still regenerating. Any cut-off branches or leaves will regenerate, but they apparently don't photosynthesise or take up nutrients, though they provide constant resources to the ecosystem. If the largest flora species doesn't photosynthesize the smaller plants would likely have a higher rate of photorespiration or else the carbon cycle in the Wastes would be pretty weird. (Also, I imagine, since the Everdeads were presumably once alive (?), the trees themselves provide a pretty hefty solid carbon store).
(Putting the rest under the cut, this got long)
Regarding nutrients: the soil in the wastes is described as completely barren, lacking any nutrients. However, there is also described to be a layer of leaf litter and detritus from the Everdeads. This is also soil! Just the top layer. Depending on how long the Everdeads have been around, say a few thousand years, this nutrient rich soil would be maybe ten centimeters deep. Not that much, but still!
As for why there isn't any nutrients, I think this could be for a couple reasons- one is that its just bad land, but the fact that the soil is "resistant to adding any" nutrients implies there's something else. Maybe it was a devestating magical event many centuries ago, or (spoilers) maybe it was another early attack by the humans using anti magical metal which now discourages all life.
It's my headcanon that the Everdeads have roots that can reach deep enough into the inhospitable soil that it can reach some kind of source of magic that it feeds on and uses to provide for the rest of the wastes.
Another interesting note is that "the Everdead population crept east one thousand years ago"- possibly the universe's reaction to the mirrored plains? (I could be wrong about the dates here). Either the universe reacting to the spread of death by spreading "death", or wanting the Everdeads to help heal that area. No idea.
Other fun things: The fact that the primary contribution is detritus means the blooming of saprophytes like microbes and fungi. There's probably lots of mushrooms growing out of Everdeads and in shady places under them, which I think adds to the "fall aesthetic". Insects would likely also thrive in the leaf litter. I imagine Everdeads to be like giant redwood trees. I imagine a similar ecosystem to that as well- smaller shrubs and a few grasses and mosses in more sunny patches, as well as epiphytic ferns and plants growing on the Everdeads themselves.
One other thing is that since prety much all of the Wastes (a pretty big area) has the exact same producer and therefore the same niche, there can't be that much biodiversity. That would only come from things like mountains, water, and climate changes. I assume the Wastes are pretty temperate if not tropical, seeing as there's dinosaurs there, though its unclear how much rainfall there is. I imagine it takes after more barren ecosystem like deserts and tundra, with few species and maybe one or two top predators (the predator here being the T-rex, i imagine). There's also mentioned swinging mice, which are presumably monkeys- probably herbivores feeding on the plants and fruits the Everdeads allow to grow. Maybe the wastes are known to be barren due to the lack of diverse species and not just the fact that cultivated plants can't grow, who knows.
Another headcanon is that Everdeads do not have a latin name because it is impossible to track their lineage as they do not die. We know latin names are a thing in Second Citadel because Sunny Budkin says this:
Though they don't seem to be in common use in the Citadel as we never hear Rilla use any. Possibly a monster thing, possibly something from a lost previous civilisation (Sunny is like 50 thousand years old after all). Everdead seems to be more a state of tree than a species anyway.
Thank you for reading this tangent, I have so many thoughts about the second citadel world. I could also go on about the implications of Arum creating creatures in his swamp and their theories of evolution, though that is explored a bit more in canon (the sweetfrog story is accurate enough, though I could still nitpick one or two things) and I've half drafted an in-universe research paper on the Numb-Cap written by Rilla and Arum. I do love that ecology has something of an important role in SC, seeing my subject represented is nice to see.
If anyone has any additions or corrections I would love to hear them!

Just a thought I had about Good Omens s3 fanfiction.
If you don't like AU's, but you read a fix-it fic, aren't you reading an AU anyways?
Then my brain said, with the first sip of tea, like the dark eldritch monster it is;
Do no speak of the old fanfictions, childe. AU's were there when they were created.

As many others, I am processing my disappoint with C3 and especially choices in the finale. Do you have any recommendations of narratives (tv, books, movies, video games, actual play, etc.) that you have really enjoyed and might recommend as something that really sticks the landing? My recommendation to others who might see this ask would be the Mistborn book trilogy, as I felt it had an incredibly satisfying ending that was surprising but also so clear in the narrative once you looked back. Love reading all your meta!
I do love Mistborn so that is a good one; some others
LOTR; this is obvious but like, I know where I come from (also very good in a sense of You Will Be Changed And Can Never Truly Go Back)
Vorkosigan saga 4ever; this is a bit of a commitment because to get the incredible middle section of it to properly land (Memory/Komarr/A Civil Campaign) you do sort have to read everything that came before, which is good but doesn't make me eat drywall
I have played 2.5 video games in the past decade as discussed extensively but I personally do feel that Veilguard, while weak in some parts, did stick the landing for me, and Disco Elysium did as well and very much hits a lot of the cathartic/comforting elements I just mentioned in my previous ask.
I Saw the TV Glow for a film I saw relatively recently that lands an ambiguous ending very well
The Fifth Season (trilogy) by NK Jemison
for standalone books: Both Piranesi and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell by Susanna Clarke; and The City and the City by China Mieville all manage to land bittersweet and/or weird endings and are genuinely unique concepts
Comic series: if you came away from C3 like "wow I actually really loved the scenes in the finale with the gods talking about what this means for them, and wish the concepts of divinity and cycles had been explored in depth" run don't walk to pick up The Wicked and the Divine (completed)
TV shows: Mad Men is good throughout and never misses the mark, though i will admit it's like I'm so glad I watched it all the way through as it aired, and I don't know if I'll ever do a rewatch? but also I'm not a massive rewatcher. Succession also sticks the landing. It's a dark landing, to be sure, and one that never flinches from, well, consequences, but they do stick it. It's been a hot minute since I watched the Wire and iirc it gets uneven in parts (though still excellent throughout) but also people should just watch The Wire.
Other actual play: all three seasons of NADDPod stick the landing, but especially the first nails it. I like TAZ but I do think it can sometimes soften its blows, though the tone of the show is such that I'm more forgiving. I also find myself saying "I really enjoy D20, but endings are not necessarily the strong suit" and that's maybe something I should explore. The other actual plays I watch either I haven't finished, or they haven't finished, which is wild to consider.
Fiction Podcasts: Penumbra podcast, Midst, Silt Verses - I'm a bit of a broken record but all three of this end in a way that is, above all, true to the work and deeply satisfying.

Juno Steel and the Case Closed (part 1) reaction
It's been a while since I've done one of these, hasn't it?
But it's the last episode, and I wanted to be here for the end. So if you'd like, some thoughts and theories under the cut:
It was a solid choice to have Nureyev go-- to make this final story about Juno and his world and his life, rather than specifically about their relationship. But also, the choices made around Nureyev's leaving-- holy shit.
Because here's a man who's spent the last twenty years entirely defined by his relationship with one man, and now he's cut loose and of course he's flailing to re-establish himself in a different orbit. And you can hear it in his voice, where it rises into something halfway to panic (amazing job, Noah Simes), and you can feel exactly how horribly wrong it's going to go if he goes down that road. And then there's Juno, who's healthy enough to be the voice of reason, even when it hurts him? Who makes it clear he's willing to wait until Nureyev is ready for him? Oh my god, that's perfection. (And Nureyev going maybe back to Brahma-- my little fanfic writer heart did a leap there). Nureyev may very well be back next episode (I suspect he will, if only for the final moments), but I really like this as an ending of their arc-- not the neatly laced up riding off into the sunset together, but looking forward to that sunset and being actually ready for it when it comes. It makes my heart feel so good.
--
And from that happy moment, to have Juno go back to Hyperion, to his office, and immediately start slipping back into his worst self? Oh, that's too real-- in a way that I am very happy with. Because he isn't 'fixed'. Juno 'born-a-sad-baby' Steel won't ever be 'fixed', not by romance or a vacation or a wonderful new family dropping him reminders of how much they love him. What's wrong with him isn't something that can be fixed-- but this time around it's different. This time around, when he yells at Rita she stands up to him (with a small, tremulous voice, because goddamn standing up to people you love is terrifying). I am so proud of her for that, and of him for backing off. It takes a palpable effort for him to rein himself in, but he's making that effort-- and he knows how, in a way that I don't think he did in those early seasons. It's a choice he's making, over and over again, just like it's a choice he makes to keep replaying Jet's wisdom instead of drowning his misery in tequila.
(Another kudos there: that Juno's problem isn't addiction, not the same way it is for Jet-- alcohol isn't a problem for him when things are going well, but it's easier to retreat into a bottle than to deal with his feelings. It's a distinction you don't see very often. Honestly, the way this show has dealt with addiction has been really refreshing to see.)
I've said from the beginning that one of the things that really drew me to this show was how it handles Juno's depression-- as a genuine mental illness that's an inherent part of him. And it's enheartening to see him struggle with it, but now be able to reach out for the tools and the support he needs. And that support doesn't have to be Jet literally talking him away from the bottle, or Rita or Nureyev petting him and making him feel better. He can reach for the pieces of them that they leave behind. And he can wish the Ruby 7 a good journey home, and send Nureyev to find himself, not without pain and grief, but without completely losing himself to it.
That kind of story gives me so much more hope than any kind of 'happily ever after' ever could.
--
And then the designated mystery, which has me so freakin' excited:
Nightmare.
She is the culmination of so many plot threads that I've been picking up on for so long and I'd completely forgotten about, and I am so freaking excited to see it.
I was in such a rough place emotionally when we last visited the most obvious of those threads, I genuinely don't remember if I posted meta about it or not, but it definitely struck some bells:
When Juno rescued Rita from Dark Matters, the safehouse she was in was described as being full of items that were clearly meant for a child. At the same time, Sasha was having Rita destroy all evidence of her own life so thoroughly that not even Rita herself would be able to find traces afterward.
It seemed most obvious to me that she was hiding a child (one that, I didn't realize until Juno remarked on Nightmare's area code, could have been hidden in the suddenly repopulated New Town without anybody asking inconvenient questions about who she was or where she came from). Also her taking care of a child would explain her ever-escalating reactionary tendencies-- she certainly wouldn't be the first parent who descended into authoritarianism in a misguided attempt to protect someone.
So some theories about who and what Nightmare is:
Alessandra's daughter is the most obvious, of course. (I still hold onto that theory that Sasha was either the Worst Client that Juno told Alessandra Strong about, or else that Sasha was the cheating spouse in that story.)
Nightmare could be Annie Wire's daughter-- assuming that Annie survived the factory, grew up, had a child of her own, and then died for real this time, leaving her grieving sister to raise her niece.
Nightmare could be Annie Wire herself-- dead, kept in stasis, revived by Dark Matters technology, and then whisked away to the safe house.
Nightmare could be a clone of Sasha and/or Annie. Honestly, not digging this theory, but I might as well throw it out there.
Nightmare could herself be a Radical, not unlike the Ruby 7, who's taken on Sasha's appearance and stayed that way ever since (after all, Sasha would have been at just about the right age when she was recruited by Dark Matters)
From a narrative standpoint, I'm most fond of the idea of Nightmare either being Annie or Annie's daughter, personally. Because that's literally the second mystery we were given, and it was pointedly never solved. As much as I like the idea that some mysteries just aren't and you have to make peace with that, I'm a big fan of long games like this, and of tugging on threads from the beginning of a story when you're wrapping up the end. That's especially true for Sasha's arc closing here, back in Hyperion City. Sasha's voice was one of the very first that we heard in this series, and Sasha's trajectory has always been a funhouse mirror version of Juno's. She's always been an integral part of his story. It seems fitting that her story gets wrapped up alongside his.

MY GOD THIS^^^
No because the way in FRP Nureyev truly believed Juno had died. Like that lady was GONE in his mind until the doors opened and he saw him still standing(? laying down? oh well. alive), how helpless he was because Juno pushed him away. And last time Juno did that... well, Nureyev had given him a sort-of ultimatum not too different from what Juno gave him. "If you don't want this, then I'll never bother you again." The way in s3 MIG, Nureyev describes how he stayed completely out of Juno's business, no contact or peeking in, so much so that he didn't even know that Juno had contact and close favors with Buddy Aurinko.
And then this ultimatum. And the pushing away. And the self-sacrificing. And, suddenly, Nureyev's whole world starts to crumble around him all over again "like quiet footsteps in the dead of night..."
And he can't go through that again, can't let Juno do this and not even try to stand up for him. Even if the electrical shocks do horrific damage to the body and brain, even if his anonymity depends on being a blank slate, even if staying with Juno and fighting for him means surely exposing himself to all the other dokana agents and risking Slip, he has to do it.
Juno actually loves him, actually is willing to fight to be with him and help him even when Nureyev has pushed him away. Juno does what Nureyev couldn't in s1 — he stays by his side despite knowing the other wants nothing of a life together, with "no benefit to [himself]." Juno really does just want Nureyev to have a choice in how he spends his life.
And oh... isn't that everything?
ok cheers to @ephemeralgalaxies for bringing this HEARTBREAKING FUCKING PIECE OF INFORMATION TO MY ATTENTION.
HOLD THE FUCK UP.
HE'S TRYING TO TEAR A SHOCK NET. WITH HIS BARE FUCKING HANDS. BECAUSE HE CAN'T LOSE JUNO. HE CAN'T.
HE'S IN PAIN. HE'S GETTING SHOCKED TOO. REMEMBER THE PAIN JUNO DESCRIBED WHEN HE GOT SHOCKED? STRONG ENOUGH TO KNOCK HIM OUT, TO CUT THE RUBY IN HALF?
THAT'S WHAT NUREYEV IS TOUCHING. THAT'S WHAT HE'S FUCKING GRABBING WITH HIS BARE HANDS.
AND HE'S IN PAIN. BUT HE KEEPS PULLING.
HE KEEPS PULLING.
HE KEEPS PULLING.
AND HE DOESN'T LET GO UNTIL JUNO TELLS HIM TO.

If there's a piece of lore that I've missed, I'm interested to hear about it and would appreciate a specific reference for where it can be found. If you're just looking to pick a fight or character-bash, I'm not interested and you're probably going to get blocked.
If you don't like to draw a distinction between canon and headcanon, this is probably not the place for you. If seeing people talking about a piece of canon that conflicts with your headcanons makes you feel angry or attacked, this is probably not the place for you.
If you think fiction's primary purpose is as moral instruction, that all characters should be role models, or that fictional relationships must all be healthy and aspirational, this is not the place for you. If you think harassment is an effective and desirable way to sway fandom toward your preferences, this is not the place for you. If you think that discussions of broader social trends involving racism, misogyny, and queerphobia have no place in fandom, this is also not the place for you.
Please feel free to message or send me asks! Just please be patient as I may not be able to respond immediately.
I don't usually have time to fully backlog my dash, so I will miss things. If there's something you want me to see, you're welcome to tag me or send me the link!
I will not reblog or boost fundraisers from people I don't know. Sorry.
And if you decide my blog isn't for you, no hard feelings for unfollowing.
