Belle and Beast (Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast, 1946)

Since i was a kid, Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite western european fairy tale. I relate at the same to the Beast’s desire to be accepted by the society that fears and looks down his appearance and to Belle’s mixture of fear, curiosity and fascination by the hybrid anthropomorfic creature. And with their great chemistry, the actors Josette Day and Jean Marais really captured those feelings in this classic adaptation directed by Jean Cocteaus

Damiel and Marion (Wings of Desire, 1987)

A 1987 film by Wim Wenders originally called Der Himmel über Berlin (lit: ‘The Heavens Above Berlin’).The film depicts two angels, Damiel and Cassiel, wandering in Cold War era Berlin and listening to the thoughts of humans. Among those humans are an old man looking for the now-destroyed Potsdamer Platz and recalling the good times he used to have there; Peter Falk As Himself; and Marion, a lonely French trapezist desperately looking for a purpose in life.  The angels don’t directly intervene in human existence but sometimes give comfort to humans who need it, like a woman in labor, or a suicidal man on a tram, or a motorcyclist who is dying in the street after he was struck by a car. However, Damiel yearns to be human himself and to experience life as a mortal does. Eventually he falls in love with Marion, the trapeze artist, and has to make a difficult choice: to become human himself in order to be with her, leaving Heaven.

Queen Fantaghirò and King Romualdo (Fantaghirò/The Cave of the Golden Rose franchise, 1991-96)

Fantaghirò (known in the english speaking world as The Cave of the Golden Rose) is a series of five television films produced in Italy by Lamberto Bava (Mario Bava’s son), telling the adventures of Fantaghirò, the youngest of three princess sisters, who traines to become a brave warrior as a way to get free of the sexist restrictions imposed at her life by her father. Her kingdom has been at war with a neighbor kingdom for years, and one day the rencently crowned young adversary king, Romualdo, decides to end the war by personally challenging the best champion of Fantaghirò’s kingdom. Fantaghirò, disguised as man, presents herself as this champion, and their love story begins when Romualdo falls in love with the beauty of her eyes. What’s interesting about this couple is how their personalitys complement each other: Fantaghirò with a more combative strong temper, and Romualdo with a more sweet and calm temper.

Marianne Danielle and Doctor Van Helsing (The Brides of Dracula, 1960)

While watching Hammer Horror’s Brides of Dracula, i finded adorable how Doctor Van Helsing cares for Marianne Danielle (whom he befriends while arriving at Transilvania), how he wants to protect her and respects her feelings, to the point of trying contain his sorrow when she announces her engagement with Baron Meinster. I always imagine that when he defeated the Baron (who is revealed to be a vampire), and flee the wind mill with Marianne, he declared his feelings, she reciprocated, he teached her how to fight vampires, they married and became a battle couple searching to purge the world of the vampires. This is a pairing who deservers more love, fanart and fanfiction.

Fininha and Clécio (Tatuagem, 2013)

Tatuagem (Tattoo) is a movie set in the late 1970s, during the period of the Brazilian Civil-Military Dictatorship, that tells the love story between Fininha, an young soldier, and Clécio, an actor and playwrighter who produces satirical plays for a underground theater called Chão de Estrelas (Floor of Stars). Their romance is one of the most sweetest ever captured on film, but we also feel a certain unease that the fact of Fininha being at the service of the military who persecutes the theater artists will break the couple apart at any moment…

Karaba and Kirikou (Kirikou and the Sorceress, 1998)

Kirikou and the Sorceress is a 1998 French animated film, directed by Michel Ocelot, loosely based on a West African fairy tale.  It tells the story of a tiny baby boy, named Kirikou, who is born in a spectacular way (all by himself, without effort of his mother nor outside help) and can speak and walk immediately after being born. After a couple of questions, he learns that a wicked sorceress, Karaba, has cursed the village and devoured all the men and boys, except his uncle, who is on his way to fight the sorceress. He tricks the sorceress, saves his uncle as well as the children of the village (twice!!), brings the water back to the dried-up spring and, among other things, discovers the sorceress’ true motivations: Karaba is evil because of all the suffering she went through at the hands of men, including a very subtly implied rape. All the bad things that she allegedly had done are ultimately proved to be false. She does hate everyone, but she gets better. Despite being a baby, Kirikou asks Karaba in marriage when she pulls a Heel–Face Turn, saying that he doesn’t like little girls. She doesn’t accept, of course, but then her kiss turns him into a handsome young man.

Nina Shah and Lisa MacKinlay (Nina’s Heavenly Delights, 2006)

Nina’s Heavenly Delights is a Rom Com about a cooking contest,  directed by Pratibha Parmar. The death of her father Mohan brings prodigal daughter, Scot with Indian ancestry Nina (Shelley Conn) home again to Glasgow, her mother, siblings - and the family restaurant, “The Taj”. Being able to keep the latter now hinges on the cooking skills Nina learned at her father‘s knees. In the “Best of The West Curry Competition” she will have to face the former fiancé she left at the altar, Sanjay. In this competition, she will count with the partnership of Lisa, who owns half of the restaurant since Mohan’s death and already seems to be very much part of Nina’s family. And in the proccess, Lisa also becomes a part of Nina’s heart… 

Lady and Tramp (Lady and the Tramp, 1955)

I grew up watching VHSs of the old Disney 2-D Animated movies over, and over, and over. And a thing that i find funny is that most people tend to quote movies from the 1990s Disney Renaissance as when Disney Couples started to met each other first instead of fall in love at first sight, bu when we make a retrospective, in actuality it was Lady and Tramp who started the trend. First they met at Lady’s house and have a verbal fight due to diverging points of view about humans, them they encounter each other again at the streets when she flees from Aunt Sarah, and they walk trough the zoo to unleash Ladys muzzle, Tramp takes her to dinner at Tonys (wich us gives Bella Notte, one of the most romantic scenes in movie history)… every step that a real couple takes to meet each other is taken by Lady and Tramp.

Orfeo x Eurydice (Black Orpheus, 1959)

Black Orpheus is a 1959 film, a French production shot in Brazil and in the Portuguese language. It is a retelling of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, set in Rio during Carnaval. Orfeo is a trolley conductor who moonlights as a dancer in a samba school. He is engaged to be married to the gorgeous and passionate Mira, but doesn’t seem too enthused about it. On his trolley car, he meets Eurydice, who has arrived in Rio from the countryside because she is being chased by a mysterious man who she thinks is trying to kill her. Orfeo and Eurydice fall in love, but the strange man—Death himself—is still stalking her.

The old Hale House is placed deep in the preserve, which is why Chris invites Peter, Malia and Jackson to go trick or treating with Allison and him in his neighborhood. They are the only single (or widow, in Chris’ case) dads in their children Kindergarden class, after all, so they should help each other.

That, and Chris is a little bit smitten with the gorgeous lawyer and his adorable twins.

The Ghost (I’m girl Casper!), the Cat-Pumpkin (It’s a pumpkin that transforms in a cat in Halloween and steals all the candy!) and the Scarecrow (Danny is the Tin-Man and we have to match!) fall asleep while watching Hotel Transilvania. Their fathers? They steal their candy and kiss under the moonlight.

Second part of my Halloween’s Petopher Discord Challenge and there’s only one to go! I hope you enjoy the domestic fluff, which is something this ships gets very little of. I blame Pinterest, that gave me the lil’ ghost picture. I’m not made of steel!

En nada cambiamos de año y de década. Pero lo que sí que sigue inalterable son nuestras ganas de ver buenas series. Y como suponemos que a vosotros os pasa lo mismo, aquí va nuestra selección de lo que no vas a querer perderte este 2020.

The Eddy es una próxima serie de televisión de drama musical estadounidense creada por Damien Chazelle y escrita por Jack Thorne para Netflix. La serie se desarrollará en París. Ocho episodios en los que el dueño de un club francés lidia con el caos diario de dirigir un local de espectáculos en el corazón de París. En el reparto encontramos nombres como el de André Holland (Moonlight), Joanna Kulig (Hanna) o Tahar Rahim (The Looming Tower). Y nosotros que tenemos el corazón huérfano de musicales en la plataforma desde The Get Down, la esperamos con los brazos abiertos.

Patrick Stewart vuelve a enfundarse el uniforme de la flota estelar, aunque como la serie Star Trek Picard se sitúa en 2399, unos 20 años después de que terminara ‘La nueva generación’, esta vez se pone traje con más galones: ahora es almirante. Amazon estrenará la vuelta de uno de los capitanes más queridos de la franquicia el 24 de enero.

Hace pocas semanas aprovechó su instagram Karl Urban para decirnos que había terminado de rodar sus escenas y que la segunda temporada de The Boys se estrenará a mediados de 2020. Poco sabemos de la trama de la segunda tanda de episodios de la adaptación del cómic de Garth Ennis y Darick Robertson, pero queda claro que la gran revelación de Homelander al final de la primera va a tener un gran peso. Y Kripke ha dicho que al fin conoceremos a Terror, el perro de Butcher, muy importante en los cómics. Vuelve el reparto original a la serie de Amazon y ya han anunciado unas cuantas nuevas incorporaciones

Los creadores de Sherlock estrenan el 1 de enero de 2020 en Netflix una nueva adaptación de la novela de 1897 Drácula, de Bram Stoker. En ella nos cuentan el viaje del celebérrimo vampiro desde Transilvania a Londres. Cuando conoce al abogado Harker y a su mujer, Mina, Drácula se sumerge en sus recuerdos, ya que la prometida de Harker se parece a su amada. Y ya se sabe: Amor trágico, terror de novela de a penique, Londres victoriano…

Puede que la que más llame la atención sea la serie de Loki, por lo queridos que son entre los fans tanto el personaje como Tom Hiddleston. Pero no es lo único del MCU que trae l plataforma de disney, ni mucho menos, la lista es tan grande como alto es Thaos: Visión y Bruja Escarlata’ con Paul Bettany y Elizabeth Olsen; ‘Falcon y Soldado de Invierno’ con Anthony Mackie y Sebastian Stan; ‘Ojo de Halcón’ con Jeremy Renner y la serie de animación What If…?, basada en la serie de cómics con el mismo nombre. Definitivamente, este va a ser el año televisivo de los amantes de La Casa de las Ideas.

Cosmo estrena el próximo lunes 13 de enero la segunda temporada de Pure, una serie inspirada en hechos reales cuya premisa asocia el narcotráfico con la comunidad religiosa de los menonitas. La serie creada por Michael Amo (The Listener) invita al espectador a conocer las costumbres de esta secta de granjeros que viven como si se encontraran en el siglo XIX.

Vuelve una de las series más queridas de nuestra parrilla con diez capítulos de sesenta minutos cada una. Y lo más importante: vuelven todos los miembros del reparto, incluido Julián. Sabemos que el tiempo es el que es y no se puede, pero cruzaríamos una puerta a 2020 sin dudarlo. Hay muchas ganas de ver a la patrulla en acción.

Tercera temporada y última para esta maravillosa versión de Ana la de las tejas verdes. Los nuevos capítulos llega el 3 de enero y cubrirán temas como la identidad, el feminismo, el bullying y la igualdad de género.

La adaptación del bestseller de María Dueñas – que escribió también ‘El tiempo entre costuras’- narra la muy intensa y muy dramática historia de amor entre Mauro Larrea (Rafael Novoa), minero que tras un accidente busca oportunidades para un futuro mejor y Soledad Montalvo (Leonor Watling), una dama refinada dueña de unas bodegas. Amazon todavía no ha dado fecha exacta de estreno de esta serie que recorre los lugares más recónditos de México, Cuba, España y Londres.

Las dos familias protagonistas de ‘Patria’ llegarán a HBO en mayo de 2020 con ocho episodios que no dudamos que serán muy intensos. Lo que hemos podido ver que no es mucho, promete una serie de gran intensidad dramática y muy cuidada. Lo que sí sabemos seguro es que el creador y guionista de la serie, Aitor Gabilondo se ha rodeado de un reparto increíble encabezado por las actrices Elena Irureta y Ane Gabarain que dan vida a Bittori y Miren, respectivamente.

Pedro Pascal y la verdadera estrella de la función, rey de los memes en 2019: Baby Yoda. Ubicada en el universo de Star Wars creado por George Lucas, la serie – que en EEUU ya se ha estrenado- tiene lugar unos años después de los eventos de El Retorno del Jedi, y sigue a un solitario pistolero más allá de los alcances de la República. Jon Favreau se desempeñó como guionista, creador y showrunner para este western galáctico. Que no será lo único nuevo de la Guerra de las Galaxias que nos llegue e2020 con Disney +, ya que, entre otros proyectos, destacan la serie sobre Obi-Wan Kenobi con Ewan McGregor y la precuela de ‘Rogue One’ con Diego Luna.

Ryan Murphy y Netflix extienden su exitosa colaboración con dos ficciones más que le vienen que ni anillo al dedo al creador. La primera es Hollywood, la cual ha co-creado Murphy con su colaborador en Glee, Scream Queens y The Politician,Ian Brennan. Así que ya podemos imaginar por dónde van los tiros del argumento de esta serie solo se conoce que se desarrollará en la meca del cine de los años 40 y que tendrá formato de miniserie. Se estrenará en mayo y en su reparto encontramos a Patti LuPone, Holland Taylor y Darren Criss. Por su parte, Ratched recupera a una de las protagonistas de Alguien voló sobre el nido del cuco: la diabólica enfermera Ratched. Así, esta serie busca profundizar en los inicios del icónico personaje para descubrir cómo llegó a convertirse en la malvada enfermera que con mano de hierro dirigía el sanatorio en el que McMurphy (interpretado por Jack Nicholson) estaba internado. Sarah Paulson será la encargada de dar vida a Ratched, papel con el que Louise Fletcher ganó un Oscar en 1976.

Movistar + aún no ha anunciado cuándo se lanzará esta serie sobre un tema que, sigue siendo muy delicado: el primer atentado con víctimas mortales de ETA. El 7 de junio de 1968 el líder de ETA Txabi Etxebarrieta (Àlex Monner) cruzaba ‘la línea invisible’ al matar a la primera víctima mortal de la organización terrorista, el guardia civil gallego José Antonio Pardines (Xoan Forneas) de sólo 25 años de edad. Pocas horas después el propio Txabi era abatido en un enfrentamiento con la guardia civil, convirtiéndose así en el primero en matar y el primero en morir en la historia de ETA. Tras la muerte de su líder, los compañeros de Txabi (Anna Castillo, Patrick Criado) deciden vengar su muerte asesinando a su principal perseguidor, el inspector Melitón Manzanas (Antonio de la Torre). La grabación de la serie se está llevando a cabo en diferentes localizaciones del País Vasco, como Bilbao, San Sebastián, Hondarribia y Navarra.

En la nueva temporada de la serie de HBO, una nueva compañía llamada Incite Inc. que dice tener respuestas para todo lo importante en la vida. Los cambios no acaban ahí y aparecerán nuevos personajes como Liam Dempsey Sr (Jefferson Mays), el co-fundador de Incite, así como el interpretado por Aaron Paul, que de momento parece ser del equipo de Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) aunque en esta serie nunca se sabe. Y la última novedad, nos van a marear durante ocho episodios en lugar de diez.

Vancouver Media y Netflix han vuelto a unir fuerzas con ‘White Lines’, nueva serie escrita y creada por Álex Pina y cuyo rodaje ya ha comenzado en diferentes localizaciones naturales de las Islas Baleares, principalmente entre Mallorca e Ibiza. Con un reparto internacional que encabezan Laura Haddock (‘Guardianes de la Galaxia’), Marta Milans (‘El embarcadero’), Juan Diego Botto (‘Buena conducta’), Nuno Lopes (‘Saint George’), Daniel Mays (‘Rogue One: Una historia de Star Wars’), Laurence Fox (‘Victoria’) y Angela Griffin (‘Turn Up Charlie’), la ficción girará en torno a la investigación que emprende una mujer cuando su hermano, un famoso DJ de Manchester, aparece muerto 20 años después de haber desaparecido en Ibiza.

El director bilbaíno coescribe junto a Jorge Guerricaechevarría los 8 capítulos de la serie. La podremos ver en HBO y en ella nos contarán la tragedia del padre Vergara (Eduard Fernández), un exorcista, boxeador y ex convicto exiliado en una parroquia de un pueblo remoto de España. Quiere olvidar y ser olvidado, pero sus enemigos lo encontrarán muy pronto… Cuando Vergara es relacionado con una serie de fenómenos paranormales ocurridos en el pueblo, Paco (Miguel Ángel Silvestre), el ingenuo alcalde y Elena (Megan Montaner), una inquieta veterinaria, tratarán de desvelar los secretos de su pasado y el significado de la antigua moneda que Vergara mantiene oculta. Poco a poco, este insólito trío de héroes se encontrará inmerso en una conspiración global: la batalla por el control de las treinta monedas por las que el apóstol Judas Iscariote traicionó a Jesús de Nazaret, unas reliquias malditas pero poseedoras de un poder inimaginable. Una conspiración que llegará hasta el mismo corazón del Vaticano y que amenaza el orden mundial establecido.

En octubre comenzó el rodaje en Soria de esta nueva versión ‘El Cid’ protagonizada por Jaile Lorente que según Amazon, contará “desde una perspectiva contemporánea la historia del español más famoso de la historia, un hombre atrapado entre dos mundos y dos culturas: un noble, un héroe, un mercenario, un vasallo… pero también un hombre que podría haber sido rey”.

No se sabe mucho más allá de que las criadas volverán en 2020. Suponemos que June seguirá mirando muy enfadada a cámara a pesar de salirse siempre con la suya. Esperamos, no obstante, que los guionistas vuelvan a encauzar un serie que se merece mucho más d lo que fue su tercera temporada.

Y tampoco ha dado fecha exacta Movistar+ para Nasdrovia más allá de que podremos verla a lo largo de 2010. La serie parte de un material previo de Sergio Sarria (coordinador de guion de El Intermedio), que escribió una novela de humor titulada El hombre que odiaba a Paulo Coelho. El libro, publicado en 2016, cuenta la historia de Julián, un abogado de Madrid que tras divorciarse de su mujer, Edurne, y entrar en la crisis de los cuarenta decide abrir un restaurante de comida rusa y ser un poco menos cretino, algo que quizás no pueda llevar a cabo.

El día 10 de enero llega a Movistar + la tercera temporada de SKAM España. Y lo hace con una gran novedad, no habrá una sola protagonista en la temporada, como es lo habitual en el formato, sino que serán dos: Nora y Viri. Sabemso que la serie ya está renovada por una cuarta temporada ¿es esta su manera de decirnos que no habrá una quinta?

Año nuevo, ficción nueva: 20 series para el 2020 En nada cambiamos de año y de década. Pero lo que sí que sigue inalterable son nuestras ganas de ver buenas series.
