Donations for Appalachian/Southeast USA Queer Organizations
Here lies the sister post to my resource list.
Under the cut, you'll find a list of regional, primarily queer-focused groups to donate to, if you have the means.
If you've ever accused us of being beyond help, or have ever said we should be sawed off into the ocean, here's your chance to help the many helpers trying to make the southeast a better place--those that always go conveniently ignored in such conversations.

A US hitwoman disguised in a hijab who was foiled when her gun jammed during an attempted murder in Britain is still at large after returning to the US, prosecutors say.
Aimee Betro, 44, was recruited by British father and son Mohammed Nazir, 30, and Mohammed Aslam, 56, to conduct a revenge killing against Aslat Mahamud and his relatives after a 2018 dispute at a jewellery store left the father and son duo injured.
Betro, who is from Milwaukee in Wisconsin, allegedly flew in from Chicago for the contract killing in Acocks Green in Birmingham, on September 7, 2019, after arranging to meet Mahamud’s son, shop owner Sikander Ali, to look at a Volkswagen Golf that the family was selling, Birmingham Crown Court was told, but the attempted shooting did not go to plan.
Dressed in a hijab, Betro “calmly” approached Ali, and pointed a gun at his head, the court heard. However, when she went to pull the trigger, the gun became jammed and Ali fled the scene.
The next morning, Betro allegedly went to Mahamud’s house and opened fire three times, before texting Mahamud: “Stop playing hide and seek” and “Where are you hiding?” the court was told. No one was injured.
Betro allegedly later sent Aslat Mahamud another text saying: “You want to rip me off, you want to be a drug kingpin go look at your house. I will show you. Watch your back. I will be shedding blood soon.”
The 44-year-old is said to have flown back to Chicago two days later and is still believed to be at large in the US, with an international manhunt underway.
If Betro is arrested in the US, it is not clear if she will be extradited to the UK to face possible charges.
Under the US’s extradition treaty with the UK, the UK must prove that a crime has been committed under both US and UK law and provide evidence that shows a “reasonable” demonstration of guilt in order for a US citizen to be extradited to the US.
Social media posts by Betro, reported by The Times, appear to show that she documented her trip to the UK from August to September 2019 in great detail.
In one Instagram post, she appears to talk about visiting her “partner in crime” in Manchester. In another post from the day before the first attempted shooting, Betro is seen posing in a picture with devil horns.
In other posts, she talks about attending the Tranzmission Festival in Crystal Palace, London, and going on a boat tour of the River Thames, it is reported.
During her time in London, she stayed at a number of hotels in Birmingham, Brighton, Derby and Manchester, in one case staying at a Raddison Blue hotel, the court heard.
Betro is not a professional hitwoman. She apparently works as a freelance graphic designer and studied early childhood education at Mid-State Technical College in Wisconsin, graduating in 2005 before going on to work as an administrator for the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team. In 2003, she wrote a letter to her local paper arguing in favour of free birth control for women.
Nazir and Aslam, of Derby, were found guilty of conspiracy to murder last week for their role in the attempted killing.
Nazir was also found guilty of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, perverting the course of justice and illegally importing firearms over a plot to bring guns into the country and then blame it on another person to frame them. Aslam was cleared of a firearms offense.
The guilty verdicts were handed down after the court heard that Nazir and Aslam held a grudge against Ali’s family following a violent dispute at his boutique clothing store in Birmingham, in central England, on July 21, 2018.
The violent incident had left Nazir and Aslam injured, with the windows of their shop left smashed and the interior “trashed”.
In order to seek revenge, the pair allegedly flew Betro over from the States to Birmingham to kill Ali and his family.
On September 6, Nazir and Aslam travelled from their home in Derby to Birmingham city centre, with Nazir spending more than two hours in a hotel with Betro–  who ordered a takeaway from Deliveroo – according to prosecutors.
Betro had apparently arranged to meet Ali the next day on the pretense of buying a car.
Birmingham Crown Court heard how Betro – disguised in a hijab – pulled up in a Mercedes before Ali pulled up in an Audi nearby.
Kevin Hegarty KC, prosecuting said: “As he did, the would-be assassin came from the driver’s side of the Mercedes.
“As she left the Mercedes she left the driver’s door open. She walked quite calmly towards Sikander Ali and was pointing a gun at him at head height.
“As she got closer to Sikander Ali he saw her and he saw the gun and she pulled the trigger to fire the gun at him. Mercifully and luckily for him the gun jammed.”
Hegarty said Ali rapidly reversed his car and drove off, while Betro reportedly abandoned her Mercedes nearby – where it was later found by police.
Nazir flew out to America a few days later, a couple of days after Betro, who he put down as his point of contact on travel documentation, but he was arrested after his return to the UK the following month. Aslam was also arrested.
Detective Inspector Matt Marston, from West Midlands Police, said the pair were “determined to take revenge.”
“The lengths they went to in trying to make sure they weren’t implicated in pulling the trigger are immense,” he added.
“However, thanks to some great police work and support from our Derbyshire colleagues we were able to place them firmly in the middle of the attempted murder plot.”

Plus size clothes for trans women // Asheville, NC
Hello, I’m in a state of evolution and self discovery, and also moving out of my apartment, and I’m looking to get rid of some clothes! Money’s tight, of course, so I’m planning to try to consign some things, but if there are some trans women in my area that could use some plus size feminine clothes I’d be happy to help out!
I’m reaching out specifically to trans women in the Asheville / Weaverville / Madison county area of WNC. I have a good sized box of women’s clothes, mostly size 2xl with a few size large pieces that run large or size 3x that run smaller. About half of the pieces are dresses or skirts, and my style tends to be a bit . . . . school-teacher-ish, so that’s what you’ll find.
I’m not asking anything for the clothes so long as they go to a trans woman/ women and they’ll be worn, but since I would like to consign articles that won’t, I’m asking that whoever is interested go through the clothes and return clothes that don’t fit or that you won’t wear to me - sorry for the extra hassle, but I’m trying to get money to move in with my girlfriend this fall; you know how it goes.
If you’re interested, send me a message through the submit on my page (also accessible to people without a tumblr) and we can arrange something!
Please only reblog this post from me or check the original post before reblogging - I’ll update it if the clothes aren’t available anymore, and I don’t want it getting out of control.
Thank you!

Queer Activist Perspectives from Southern Appalachia
Tumblr media
This week on the show, we bring you the audio of an activist panel from the recent Queer Conference held online by University of North Carolina, Asheville, in March of 2021. The conference was titled Fitting In and Sticking Out – Queer [In]Visibilities and the Perils of Inclusion. From the panel's description for the conference:
This panel brings together 4 local (Asheville, NC) and regional groups working at different intersections of queer community support. We will learn about the work these groups do, the particular issues that affect southern queers, the changes in visibility and inclusion for queer community, and the building of larger coalitions of liberation. Representatives from four organizations will be part of the panel:
Youth OUTright (YO) is the only nonprofit whose mission is to support LGBTQIA+ youth from ages 11-20 in western North Carolina. Learn more about their work on their website, and support them financially here.
Southerners on New Ground (SONG) is a nonprofit aimed at working towards LGBTQ liberation in the south. Find out more about their work on their website, and support them financially here.
Tranzmission Prison Project (TPP) is a prison abolition grassroots organization that provides literature and resources to incarcerated members of the LGBTQ community. Learn more about their work on their website and donate here.
Pansy Collective is a decentralized, DIY, queer, music and arts collective that created Pansy Fest, an annual queer music festival showcasing LGBTQ musicians from the south and rural areas, prioritizing reparations for QTBIPOC artists and community members, and community education and organizing around the principles of autonomy, mutual aid, antifascism, love, and liberation for all. Learn more about their work on their website, or donate here.

TEEN VOGUE
In September 2018, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections announced it would put a halt to book donation programs, mail-order books, and publications for incarcerated people housed in state prisons. Although the restrictive policy has since been reversed, there are still concerns among those who run the programs and people behind bars.
This, of course, isn’t the first time prisons have restricted books. Just like school districts and universities, books and other reading materials sent to incarcerated people through a state’s Departments of Corrections are regularly censored. Often, individual prison staff are responsible for monitoring the influx of materials, which they can often reject or deny at their discretion. The practice inhibits knowledge about gender, sexuality, health, and many other important topics to those behind bars. While the specific guidelines vary from state to state, and even prison to prison, the United States houses 2.3 million people in 1,719 state prisons, 102 federal prisons, 1,852 juvenile correctional facilities, 3,163 local jails, and 80 Indian Country jails in addition to military prisons, immigration detention facilities, civil commitment centers, state psychiatric hospitals, and prisons, according to a 2018 report by Prison Policy Initiative.
Books can be lifelines for many people in prison. Books can be a person’s only contact with the world outside of prison, especially if they’re no longer in touch with family or friends. Additionally, books provide important information to incarcerated people who already have limited resources, whether it’s legal or health information. For incarcerated queer and trans people, for instance, books can provide credible sex education as well as legal information regarding trans care.
To better understand the issue, Teen Vogue spoke to organizers involved with prison book-giving programs, including the Asheville, North Carolina-based Tranzmission; Austin, Texas-based Inside Books Project; and Madison, Wisconsin-based LGBT Books to Prisoners — organizations that help incarcerated people get access to publications. We also chatted with an incarcerated person in Texas about his experience with restrictive conditions.
Grier Low, who has been organizing with Tranzmission for the past seven years, says books will be rejected by prison staff for various reasons, such as “individual state restrictions, restrictions at the specific facility, and personal bias of the mail room staff.”
In October, Truth Out reported that the Uptown People’s Law Center and the MacArthur Justice Center of Illinois sued the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) director on behalf of LGBTQ prison abolition organization Black & Pink, claiming Illinois prisons "have adopted and implemented discriminatory mail policies and practices prohibiting delivery of Black & Pink publications and other written forms of speech, including greeting cards and chapter updates." Truth Out also reported that when reached for comment, a media administrator for IDOC said in an email that “the publication has not been banned at any IDOC facilities,” but noted that it wasn’t clear which publication was being referred to, and that further communication to the IDOC had not been responded to at the time of publication. (Teen Vogue also reached out for comment to IDOC's media administrator, who would not comment on the allegations, and directed Teen Vogueto send a Freedom of Information act request to obtain a list of publications at IDOC.) This allegation echoes a similar ban on publications that “promote homosexuality,” enacted in 2016 by the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex, which was quickly overturned, according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky.
“The one [reason] we see the most returns on are either based on sexually explicit content or because the facility only accepts books from an authorized vendor,” Low tells Teen Vogue.
So if a book isn’t rejected for sexual content, it’s because a prison only accepts books from publishers. That means that you can’t send books from your personal library to your loved ones behind bars. Instead, you’ll have to purchase books from a third party vendor, such as independent book sellers, Barnes & Noble, or Amazon — which can turn into a financial burden for those supporting loved ones behind bars.

my lesbian aunts wanted to hang out with me and they did the ABSOLUTE MOST i love them so much. my night with them was the most prime example of hipster lesbian culture ever. here’s what we did
-eat thai food together and talk about the issues with our educational system
-walk over to the local anarchist bookstore and volunteer for a project called tranzmission that sends books to trans prisoners
-go to an all ages show at the gay bar that was “women with guitars playing folk music that you have to dance to”
-bought me the best watermelon mint soda
-got vegan ice cream and talked about podcasts
I have more fun with them than i ever have with a million other straight relatives
