Appunti di genere I: Wraeththu

(Sì, il blog vive ancora. Il ritmo è calato molto per un mix di mancanza di cose da segnalare e vicende nella vita vera.)

Come ho già segnalato in altri post, sono una grande appassionata di New Weird. È stata in effetti questa passione piuttosto precoce che mi ha convinto a dare una chance alla lettura in inglese durante i primi anni delle superiori, visto che la probabilità di trovare qualche libro appartenente ad un sottogenere del fantasy diverso dagli high fantasy di stampo tolkeniano (stampo di qualità perlomeno altalenante, mi tocca aggiungere) in una qualunque libreria in Italia era molto bassa: il primo libro che lessi così fu The Year of Our War di Swainston, che cementò la sicurezza che questo genere fosse stato pensato proprio per chi come me era ossessionata dal leggere di cose che non avrebbe mai potuto immaginare da sola e vederle prendere vita con una minuzia e una precisione straordinarie. Poi Swainston scrisse, ahimè, anche altri libri, ma ormai lanciatissima iniziai a leggere quasi tutta la narrativa fantastica che mi interessava in inglese.

Vabbè, momento nostalgia a parte, anche se tra la Trilogia dell’Area X e qualche libro del Bas-Lag di Miéville qualcosa si è mosso, ci sono ancora tantissimi autori recenti che rimangono lontani dal fare il loro debutto sugli scaffali delle librerie nostrane, ma per il consiglio di oggi ci tenevo a segnalare la serie di un’autrice che è a tutti gli effetti una delle madrine (se non LA madrina) di questo sottogenere e che ha ancora meno chance di altri di arrivare anche qua in Italia: la trilogia Wraeththu di Storm Constantine, pubblicata tra il 1987 e il 1989 e tutt’ora inedita in Italia. Nonostante non mi informi spesso sul background di un autore prima di dargli una chance, qualche notizia su Storm Constantine mi ha convinto che si trattava di un tipo interessante: intanto perché quello è il suo vero nome, cambiato all’anagrafe dopo anni di pubblicazioni sotto pseudonimo, e poi perché da tutto quello che ha fatto in vita, dal sostegno alle fanfiction delle sue opere alla gestione di siti e wiki dedicati ai suoi mondi fantastici, traspare un genuino amore per i fan e un’idea della scrittura come atto comunitario che è relativamente peculiare tra gli autori che leggo. La stessa premessa della serie di cui volevo scrivere oggi – che una razza priva di genere, bellissima e letale, rimpiazzi a poco a poco gli umani – deriva dai look androgini delle band che frequentava in gioventù; senza ulteriori indugi, dunque, le mie impressioni su una serie che fa tante cose in modo mediocre o addirittura pessimo, ma che ne fa almeno altrettante in maniera interessante.

Come specificavo appena sopra, la trilogia di Wraeththu parte dall’idea che alle periferie di una civiltà umana ormai in lento declino si sviluppi una mutazione, inizialmente circoscritta a pochi individui, che ne modifichi il corpo e i sensi in maniera talmente radicale da creare una nuova specie: i Wraeththu, persone dotate di organi femminili e maschili, androgini d’aspetto e incredibilmente forti e resistenti, con abilità magiche e occulte che permettono loro di utilizzare telepatia, piromanzia e altri incantesimi molto più oscuri; l’intera trilogia è incentrata sul lento percorso che i Wraeththu compiono per ereditare la Terra – dai rapimenti di adolescenti dalle famiglie nelle periferie per trasformarli, alle guerre brutali condotte sotto il segno della conquista, fino ai tentativi di convivenza con quegli umani che si ostinano a non voler cedere il passo a questa razza che è chiaramente migliore di loro sotto tutti gli aspetti. Giusto?

La copertina della raccolta di tutti e tre i libri. L’influenza punk è piuttosto evidente.

È rimarchevole il fatto che tutti e tre i libri si svolgano in momenti dell’avanzata molto diversi tra loro, e che lascino impressioni assai differenti sui Wraeththu coinvolti nelle vicende raccontate: il primo libro, The Enchantments of Flesh and Spirit, segue i viaggi di Pellaz, ragazzo fuggito assieme al Wraeththu Cal e iniziato rapidamente in un mondo fatto di piccole tribù sparse, che sono tutte più o meno apertamente ostili agli uomini ma che raramente hanno la forza di opporsi alle città più grandi e ben organizzate; sopravvivono grazie a fragili reti commerciali, furti e saccheggi e l’occasionale zuffa con gli abitanti delle zone isolate in cui gli uomini stanno iniziando a temere questa massa di guerrieri che hanno al loro fianco sciamani con strani poteri e una resistenza sovrumana. L’ultimo libro, che ha per protagonista Cal e il suo compagno di viaggi Panthera, dettaglia invece grandi insediamenti con culti, tradizioni e strutture sociali proprie e una società largamente abituata a considerare normalità tutte quelle caratteristiche Wraeththu che erano aliene o disturbanti ai Wraeththu stessi durante i primi anni delle loro trasformazioni; il risultato è effettivamente una cronaca dell’ascesa al potere di una nuova specie, che si trova a confrontarsi con due quesiti fondamentali che ne segnano l’intero percorso: che cosa dobbiamo fare dei nostri corpi ora che non esiste più alcuna differenza tra uomini e donne? E se siamo davvero così superiori agli uomini, saremo in grado di costruire qualcosa di meglio di quello che hanno fatto loro?

La risposta – anzi, le risposte – alla prima domanda è sicuramente uno dei motivi per cui ho deciso di parlare sul blog di questa trilogia, nonostante i suoi numerosi difetti. I Wraeththu sono a tutti gli effetti descritti come una razza che nasce dall’unione di aspetti maschili e femminili: senza peli, privi di seno e con genitali sia maschili che femminili (espressione imprecisa ma comprensibile, data l’età del testo), sono il ritratto di una bellezza androgina, a tratti anche un po’ patinata e occasionalmente perfino un filo ridicola, considerando quanto tempo i personaggi indugiano ad ammirarsi allo specchio e reciprocamente. Ma se si scrosta un po’ la patina da belli maledetti che evoca il minaccioso spettro di Twilight è evidente che l’interesse di Constantine è ben distante da quello di creare una nuova specie di Gary Stu (si dice ancora Gary Stu? Mi sento anziana) su cui far beare inesistenti schiere di fangirl, ma è piuttosto un modo di esplorare la psiche di un mucchio di giovani adolescenti che si trovano di punto in bianco in un corpo che è molto lontano dalla mascolinità che avrebbero dovuto raggiungere con la fine della pubertà.

Sì, perché la particolarità della mutazione che tramuta gli umani in Wraeththu è che sembra essere una mutazione esclusivamente maschile: i tentativi di trasmutare le donne falliscono tutti, e non incontriamo un solo Wraeththu che dichiari di essere stata una ragazza; il risultato è che, sebbene i Wraeththu siano a tutti gli effetti “l’unione di principi maschili e femminili”, il risultato della trasformazione che inizia a infettare le periferie è quello di un branco di giovani confusi che ragionano esattamente come ragionavano da ragazzi e faticano a lasciar andare quelle dinamiche di genere che caratterizzavano tutti i loro rapporti, compresi quelli sessuali. L’esempio più evidente fin dal primo libro è quello di Cal: un ragazzo gay spaventato dalle donne che da Wraeththu non riesce a scrollarsi di dosso quei rigidi ruoli che avevano caratterizzato le sue relazioni fino al momento della trasformazione e che ripropone in tutte le sue relazioni le stesse dinamiche di sottomissione e dominazione che aveva vissuto durante la sua vita umana.

C’è anche un ttrpg! Non l’ho provato, anche perché credo sia quasi impossibile da reperire, ma giocare con quest’ambientazione dev’essere molto divertente.

Alcune delle pagine più belle sono dedicate ai rapporti tra i Wraeththu e le donne. Alcune di loro, affascinate dai Wraeththu e spesso un po’ invidiose di quella trasformazione che ha cambiato gli uomini da loro signori e padroni nella società maschilista in cui avevano vissuto fino a quel momento a entità a cui riconoscono una sorellanza precaria, vivono affiancando i Wraeththu aspettando che l’umanità sparisca lentamente dalla terra, convinte di rinascere nel principio femminile che costituisce la metà della nuova specie; altre però sperimentano subito la brutalità di alcune tribù Wraeththu, che non appare affatto diversa da quella umana: le donne nelle zone raggiunte dalla tribù dei Varr vengono uccise o schiavizzate, considerate poco più che animali incapaci di ascendere allo stadio successivo dell’evoluzione dell’umanità, e trattate con modalità per nulla diverse, se non peggiori, da quelle della società patriarcale in cui avevano vissuto fino a quel momento. È anche e soprattutto da questi scorci di inaspettata violenza e crudeltà che l’immagine perfetta dei Wraeththu inizia ad incrinarsi e qualche crepa inizia ad insinuare il sospetto che per essere una razza perfetta, al di sopra di ogni meschinità umana, molti Wraeththu si stiano comportando come tutti i conquistatori umani prima di loro.

L’incapacità Wraeththu di lasciar andare le emozioni, le passioni e i temperamenti umani ancora e ancora produce società, costumi e dinamiche identiche a quelle che avevano giurato di lasciarsi alle spalle: queste ipocrisie sono descritte molto bene da Constantine, ed è dunque sorprendente che non sia capace di risolverle in maniera soddisfacente. Il terzo libro della trilogia è sicuramente il più debole per tanti motivi (vedi i paragrafi successivi), ma uno di essi è la mancanza di una costruzione coerente che leghi assieme tutti questi momenti molto belli in cui il percorso dei Wraeththu per diventare qualcosa di più degli umani viene sfidato dalla loro incapacità di far funzionare in armonia quel loro nuovo corpo intriso di magia e nuove potenzialità e la loro mente ancora saldamente ancorata agli schemi del vecchio mondo. Forse uno degli esempi più lampanti in questo senso è l’utilizzo dei pronomi in questa serie: tutti i Wraeththu parlano di sé al maschile, ma pionieristicamente una donna di nome Kate suggerisce a Pellaz che non sembra il modo giusto di parlare di una creatura che non è né uomo né donna; questa idea viene ripresa ancora un paio di volte e avrebbe potuto avere conseguenze interessanti all’interno delle dinamiche di genere della storia, ma viene poi persa definitivamente con il passare delle pagine e nel terzo libro non viene mai più menzionata.

Insomma, la trilogia è al suo meglio quando i suoi personaggi si immergono a fondo nelle contraddizioni di una specie che dovrebbe esistere al di là di tutto ciò che è umano ma che continua a vivere come se fosse tale – anzi, a ben vedere, spesso e volentieri (ma non sempre) come se fosse ancora maschio. Non c’è dubbio, dunque, che i personaggi migliori siano quelli in cui tali contraddizioni brillano particolarmente: la maggior parte del secondo libro, cioè The Bewitchments of Love and Hate, è dedicata alla famiglia della nobiltà Varr da cui Pellaz e Cal avevano soggiornato brevemente durante il libro precedente; è composta da Terzian, il capo della tribù, il suo compagno Cobweb, salvato da Pellaz e Cal da una ferita mortale e riportato alla corte dei Varr, e il figlio Swift, uno dei primi Wraeththu di seconda generazione. Ma la relazione tra i primi due personaggi, che dovrebbe essere uno dei fulgidi esempi di perfezione Wraeththu, immune da gelosie, dinamiche di potere patriarcali o debolezze umane che privano i rapporti della loro bellezza e li trasformano in catene con cui legarsi a vicenda, sono invece l’esempio perfetto di come questi ex-uomini fatichino a lasciar andare la binarietà che ha caratterizzato tutta la loro vita precedente: Cobweb, dai capelli fluenti alla “maternità” imposta, è in una posizione sociale e politica che fatichiamo a distinguere da quella di tutte le donne del “vecchio mondo” e nel momento in cui cerca di ricavare a corte un potere e una posizione al di là del proprio ruolo i sussurri dei Varr lo bollano come un mistico – anzi, come una strega. In maniera del tutto speculare, Terzian è l’archetipo perfetto del barbaro conquistatore: virile al massimo grado, con capelli corti e fisico scolpito, incapace anche solo di considerare la gravidanza o anche solo il ruolo di soume (chi utilizza le parti “femminili” durante il sesso), si comporta esattamente come farebbe un qualsiasi signore di un feudo con sudditi da da sfamare, terre da conquistare e popoli da sottomettere. Il lento ma inesorabile disfacimento di queste dinamiche di potere, grazie alle scelte di Swift e agli influssi destabilizzanti di Cal, di cui Terzian si innamora perdutamente, costituisce forse le pagine più belle dell’intera trilogia e un altro motivo per cui, se non tutti e tre i libri, almeno i primi due meritano l’attenzione di chiunque sia interessato alle tematiche appena descritte.

Storm Constantine in the flesh. Specifico che questa è una delle sue foto più sobrie, ma purtroppo le altre avevano una pessima risoluzione.

Purtroppo, come ripetutamente accennato, la trilogia è ben lontana dall’essere perfetta. Non mi soffermerò troppo sullo stile di scrittura, che pur cadendo troppo spesso in un lirismo fine a sé stesso e a tratti anche un po’ patetico, mostra quello che deve mostrare e non ostacola attivamente la lettura – non un gran complimento, me ne rendo conto, ma non mi sento di dire nulla di più positivo; tuttavia, i veri problemi che squalificano questa trilogia dall’essere godibile per una fetta non indifferente degli appassionati di fantasy sono quelli di worldbuilding e di scelte narrative della seconda metà dell’ultimo libro, The Fulfilments of Fate and Desire. È evidente che Storm Constantine ha scritto delle vicende dei Wraeththu per parlare di sesso, di relazioni e d’amore, non certo per dettagliare con cura minuziosa una mappa di una civiltà perfettamente coerente, e sono dunque disposta a perdonare una certa quantità di vaghezza e di imprecisione relativamente alle modalità con cui avviene la conquista Wraeththu. Tuttavia, questa quantità viene ampiamente superata in molte parti della trilogia, in cui non è affatto chiaro a che livello di avanzamento tecnologico siano gli esseri umani per non resistere all’avanzata Wraeththu, quanto della tecnologia del vecchio mondo venga perso con la loro presa di potere (e soprattutto perché), o anche solo in che modo funzioni la magia Wraeththu in modalità più specifiche di “perché la trama vuole così”, che spesso conduce ad apparenti incoerenze circa quello che i personaggi sono in grado di fare in qualsiasi momento della storia. Oltretutto, quando Constantine entra più nello specifico circa i dettagli dell’ambientazione fornisce elementi spesso poco coerenti con quello che abbiamo visto fino a quel momento (vedi: le armi nucleari), problema che stride molto con la minuzia con cui è invece in grado di creare religioni, mitologie e usanze, nelle poche occasioni in cui sceglie di focalizzarsi su di esse.

A questi problemi si aggiunge un terzo libro – incentrato sul viaggio di Cal verso un destino mistico che sembra chiaramente fondamentale per l’ascesa dell’intera specie ad un livello superiore di esistenza – che si conclude con una risoluzione anticlimatica e colma di una spiritualità vuota di contenuto che viene invece spacciata come una trasformazione epocale, come se fosse cambiato tutto quando a conti fatti non è cambiato proprio un bel niente; nemmeno le interessanti (seppur limitate nello spazio che occupano) descrizioni delle tribù dello Jaddayoth formatesi a seguito della caduta dei vecchi insediamenti Wraeththu, che alludono a nuove modalità di comprendere l’unione Wraeththu dei principi maschili e femminili, o la ripresa di punti di vista femminili in una chiave assai promettente bastano a salvare quest’ultimo libro dalla mediocrità.

La conclusione inevitabile di questo mio consiglio è quella che ormai accompagna buona parte dei miei post: se il New Weird vi appassiona e volete scoprire uno tra i libri fondanti di questo genere, o se vi affascina l’idea di leggere una delle prime storie fantasy che racconta di genere e di sesso in maniera meno binaria rispetto alla norma del tempo (peggio di LeGuin, d’accordo, ma il confronto è crudele) buttatevi! Magari vi interesseranno solo i primi due libri, che sono comunque abbastanza completi da non lasciare l’amaro in bocca anche se deciderete di fermarvi lì: anche così, buona lettura.

In my shop you’ll find two different downloads: “static tumblr headers about disability, 13 images with a transparent background, each on top of 11 different pride flags” (examples: first two rows of this gifset)

Each of these have one folder abou sign language (for the trasparent one there is an extra one for blindness!), one folder about wheelchairs users, one about hand or leg prosthetics.

Pride flags used are: ace, agender, aro, bi, lesbian, mlm (where it applies), nonbinary, pansexual, aroace, trans and rainbow.

As always no one is excluded on purpose!

we’ll work on making this header together for this tutorial.

i’ll start by giving instruction on how i do my general headers. i always do them in picsart and in phonto. those are the only two apps you’ll need! no need for photoshop, etc. all this can be done within these two apps. full directions are under the cut 💕

to begin, i find a picture i like. let’s do one of minnie from the winter package!

now, going into picsart, you will want to click the little purple plus sign at the bottom of the screen. select the photo you would like to edit. once it’s uploaded into the editing screen, on the bottom row of picsart, you’ll want to click the little square button that says “tools” and then select the option for “free crop.”

after doing that, several options appear. you’ll want to click the option for “select” and then click above that, the option that says “person.” then at the top of the screen, click the little “next” arrow in the top right corner.

this will pull the image from the background, and you’ll be left with the transparent image.

then click, “save” in the top right corner, and then “next.” it takes you to save photo page and click the “save” button on the bottom left. it will pull up a window and from there you click “download photo”

from there, pop over to the “phonto” app. phonto is a bit easier to navigate than picsart, so i’ll just type the instructions as opposed to screenshots, i hope that’s okay. to begin a new project, you’ll want to click the camera icon on the bottom of the screen. select “plain images.” from there, i always choose the plain white box in the upper right. click that, and then press the bar at the bottom of the page that says “color.” you can choose preselected colors you’ll see lined in a row (you can scroll through the row for more options) or tap the three little lines above the bolder line to the right of the color options and by tapping the little pencil and paper icon in the top right, input your own color-hex code for a custom color you’d like. tap the color you want, and then click the top right corner that says “apply.”

then click at the very top where it says the dimensions. choose one that is narrow and long, and you can crop it to fit back in picsart. or, one thing i always do is take a photo that i know fits the tumblr mobile header size, save the plain phonto image with color you’ve selected, without the transparent photo added yet, over that and adjust the size to cover the photo completely. then i overlay the transparent photo.

then click the top right corner button that is a little box with an arrow pointing up. click “use.”

from there, click the three little lines on the bottom right menu and select “add image” and choose the transparent image you made in picsart. position it to fit along the very bottom of the image, and size it how you’d like by tapping on the transparent image and clicking the options for “size” and “move” to position it where you’d like it. i always stick it centered along the very bottom.

after that, then click the little button on the bottom right with the arrow pointing up, and click “save image.” go back into picsart, and open the image to finish editing it in that app.

to make the white bottom of the photo, scroll through the editing options at the bottom of the screen until you get to “draw.” tap the little paintbrush option, and find one you like. this is the one i always select.

click the little checkmark in the top right of the window, and then click the little rainbow square on the bottom left. select the white color and then click the top right checkmark. using your finger, draw the “cloud” effect along the bottom. pay close attention to the very sides because sometimes it’s easy to miss little parts along the very edges. apply however much you’d like along the very bottom and then click “apply” in the top right.

scroll back through the bottom options until you find the “sticker” option. it’s a little page icon with a smiley. here, you can search for various additions. for this header, i searched for blush, and applied it to jimin’s face, editing the size to fit. and then i also searched for “snowflakes” or “snow.”

[ side note: sometimes the edges of the transparent image you’ve applied look a little harsh, as i’m noticing they do in this header i’m using for the example. to fix this, go to to the “retouch” option in picsart and choose the option for “smooth” and click “manual” and draw around the edge of the trasparent image (this may take several times) in order to blend it better into the background) ]

once you apply your stickers, then click “apply” and “next”; “save” and either “save” or “download” whichever option pops up. and you’re good to go!

for the header i made with the samsung picture, i have no idea how to remove objects like that, so what i did was crop part of the background around that area and paste it over the phone, using that “smooth” tool to try to blend as best i could. it’s not perfect by any means but if you don’t look to close, it gets the job done. so if there’s an object in the photo you’d like to remove, in picsart or the webpage “befunky” crop part of the background out for that area, save the image, then open the main image back up, and paste the cropped image over that area, resizing and tilting to make it as covered as you can.

i hope this helps and i’m sorry if it’s not too clear or if i’ve over-explained. i’ve never done a tutorial before, so i hope it’s not too muddled or anything. thank you so, so, so much for asking me to share this with you! it means so much to me that you love my headers, as imperfect as they are. i only just started this this past week, so i’m still learning and practicing. the thing to remember is just to have fun with it and personalize it to however you’d like. you can do pretty much anything in picsart lol

Art Tutorial

Hey guys! I wanted to show you how I draw on AutoDesk Sketchbook on my phone. The app is FREE and super easy to use.

1. Sketch

I decided to do a little bear! I don’t use black for my sketch because it’s easier for me to see actual color.

2. Line art

I use the inking pen and the technical pen for line art. For this bear, it’s the inking pen.

3. Color

I create another layer and use my inking pen to color. I go outside the lines but clean up afterwards.

4. Line art.... 2!

TRASPARENCY LOCK THE LINE ART LAYER! This will let you color your line art!

5. Shading

Create a new layer inbetween the line art and the color layers. Make sure to you the blending to MULTIPLY and select a LIGHT color to shade with. Boom! Easy shading. DO NO SHADE WITH BLACK.

6. Background

I use the dry marker or airbrush tools to create a simple background. I also added some little freckles on this cutie.

And there we go! Our little bear is done.

Review: Nendoroid 769 Kagamine Len Harvest Moon Ver.

I wanted Len Harvest Moon Ver. for a long time and ultimately I ordered him along with his sister and I’ve to admit this one is another of the Nendo I particularly love, not so much for its accessories but because he’s simply beautiful (below in an official photo).

...they were both sadly damn expensive to get... but I really love them.

So, a premise.

What does it mean ‘Harvest Moon version’? Everything starts with Hatsune Miku. At the HATSUNE MIKU EXPO in Shanghai held in China Goodsmile announced they would release a Miku based on an illustration (which you can see below) by the Chinese illustrator Rella, who is well known as one of the greatest Hatsune Miku illustrators on Pixiv in which Miku was dressed up in outfit based on those seen at the Mid-Autumn Festival in China (hence the name ‘Harvest moon’ due to it being a harvest festival).

Afterward though, Goodsmile decided to release also Kagamine Len and Kagamine Rin, always using illustrations made by the Chinese illustrator Rella in which they were dressed up in outfit based on thoseof the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (which you can see below).

And now let’s dig into how this Nendo is.

Kagamine Len Harvest Moon Ver.’s package is the Nendoroid standard package, with the mark Goodsmile company clearly visible (actually sorry, in the first photo isn’t so clearly visible due to the light hitting the box but it’s there). Do yourself a really HUGE favour and avoid buying bootlegs of this Nendo as there are a lot for Kagamine Len Harvest Moon Ver. but they’re really, really ugly.

The blister box isn’t as filled with accessories as Hatsune Miku Harvest Moon Ver.’s one but it still contains many cute things so let’s look at him!

His stand has the standard Nendo base, a square with many holes in which you can insert the brace those plug can be attacked to his back to support him.

However we don’t have just Len’s stand but also a stand for the special background that comes with Len and that you can place behind him.

Included is also an extra neck joint.

Like all the Nendo Len is stored in the box in a neutral position, with his legs straight and his arms straight and at his side.

The cartoon inserted behind him in the box has no background, it’s just a yellow with written over his Nendo number 769 but behind it in a plastic bag it’s attached the special background panel I mentioned before (below without the stand).

It’s really cute and gives a nice atmosphere, sort of like an ancient illustration centered on moon viewing.

Oh, and of course we’ve instructions in English and Japanese.

And now let’s look at him disassembled with all his spare parts!

We’ll start with the legs.

Sadly they’re just two straight legs. Same as KAITO Senbonzakura Ver. Len’s legs don’t come with the plug. Basically there are holes on the legs and you insert in them the ball shaped joins on the Nendo’s pelvis.

It gives the legs mobility… but I get really fearful about the ball shaped joint to break each time I pull a leg out so in a way I’m sort of glad I don’t have extra legs with whom to replace these ones.

Let’s continue with the arms, 2 for the right side, 3 for the left.

The arms are fundamentally a pair of straight arms and then arms to hold the bunnies and the Chinese tea set he comes with. As you can see they can be removed by the sleeves so that you can exchange them (actually I didn’t manage to remove the last left one so i think it’s not meant to be removed).

The sleeves have detailed folds and I love how their colour slowly changes from grey to orange.

We continue with Len’s body.

His Chinese clothes aren’t overly complicate, they’re actually pretty simple compared to Miku or Rin but they’re still lovely. In them too the colour switches gently from grey to orange.

I couldn’t manage to remove the pelvis from him. Below you can see the ball joint for his legs.

Faceplates!

Only two sadly, a smiling one and an embarrassed one. The smiling one is nice but nothing special, the embarassed one is very cute.

It’s true, Len’s face and Rin’s face are exactly the same so you can easily swap among them and, in addition to this, Goodsmile produced already 3 more Len (4 if you count the cheerful version) and an equal number of Rin, so, if you are a Kagamine siblings fan you have already other faceplates for them but, well, I would have still loved if they had given him an extra one.

Hair.

Len’s cute, little ponytail is connected to the rest of his hair by a peg, so you can move it a bit.

For once Len’s hair doesn’t come with his headphones so I really love it all the more!

I also like the yellow used for them, which has darker shades.

And now we move to talk about the accessories included, the first being the bunny ear parts.

Following the Goodsmile tradition the idea is that you basically stick those small trasparent pieces in between the sealing parts of the hair so to keep them still.

I HATE THIS as they tend to slip and, what’s worse, one of the tiny plastic pieces somehow managed to slip out of the ears and I almost lost it. I had to gue it to keep it safely inside the ear, which is something I hate.

To be honest though the ears are cute, much cuter than the ones included in the Nendoroid More: After Parts 04 A Set rabbit ones.

Personally though, I love more the other accessories, my fave being the two cute rabbits.

Len (or another Nendo) can hold them both as each of them has, below it, a little hole to hold them.

They can also stand on their own! (by the way, they’re white, no idea why they come so grey in the photo... -_-;)

The bunnies are really beyond cute, I lvoe them so much!

Another accessory I love is Len’s adourable Chinese tea set.

Here it’s how it looks from above...

...and below it you can see the hole that allows Len to hold it.

It’s adourable and very Nendoroid sized. As I’m used to give them Re-ment accessories, which are often slightly bigger, I love how this one instead fits them perfectly!

Now… poses.

The poses are all easy to get and, as you can see, Len comes out always very cute, no matter if you leave him alone or with Rin.

By the way, Rin and Len’s design as well as the rabbits make me think of some Chinese legends among which the story of Chang E, which is the most widely accepted tale regarding the moon and the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival and of the legend of the jade rabbit. Maybe it’s just me though.

Would anyone who’s not fan of the Vocaloids or of Kagamine Len himself, want to buy him?

Honestly I love Kagamine Len Harvest Moon Ver. both for his Chinese clothes and his accessories as well as his cuteness.

Yes, he could have more spare parts but I still think he’s enjoyable enough and I would recomment him.
