Tree Plantation Initiatives in Bangalore: A Green Step Towards Urban Sustainability
Bangalore, often hailed as the "Garden City" of India, is renowned for its lush landscapes and verdant public spaces. However, with rapid urbanization, the city faces significant environmental challenges, including air pollution and rising temperatures. To combat these issues, several tree plantation initiatives have been launched to preserve and enhance Bangalore's green cover. Here’s a look at how tree planting efforts are shaping a greener future for Bangalore and how you can get involved.
Importance of Tree Plantation in Bangalore
Tree planting in Bangalore serves multiple environmental and social functions. Trees help moderate urban climates, improve air quality by filtering pollutants, reduce the urban heat island effect, and provide habitat for various species. Moreover, they contribute to the mental and physical well-being of the city's residents, creating more serene and attractive environments.
Key Tree Plantation Initiatives in Bangalore
BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) Tree Planting Drive: The local municipal corporation frequently organizes tree plantation drives. These are often conducted in collaboration with local NGOs and community groups, focusing on increasing the city's green belts. Residents can participate in these initiatives by volunteering during planting drives or by providing spaces like private gardens and terraces for plantation.
SayTrees Environmental Trust: SayTrees is a prominent NGO dedicated to protecting and creating green spaces in and around Bangalore. They organize multiple tree planting events throughout the year and collaborate with corporates, schools, colleges, and other institutions. This NGO not only plants trees but also ensures their survival and growth through regular maintenance and monitoring.
Project Vruksha Foundation: This foundation is focused on creating an inventory of trees to protect and manage the urban forest. Their work includes not only plantation but also documenting the health and status of existing trees, which helps in conservation and policy-making efforts.
How to Get Involved
Volunteer for Plantation Drives: Volunteering for local tree plantation drives is a direct way to contribute to greening your community. Organizations like SayTrees and BBMP's initiatives often seek volunteers for various activities ranging from planting to maintenance.
Donate to Tree Plantation NGOs: Financial contributions can aid the sustenance and expansion of plantation activities. Donations are used for buying saplings, tools, and other materials needed for tree planting and maintenance.
Educate and Advocate: Awareness is key to the success of any environmental initiative. Educating your peers about the benefits of tree planting and advocating for support from local businesses and authorities can amplify the impact of tree plantation efforts.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiatives: Companies in Bangalore can incorporate tree plantation into their CSR activities. This not only aids the environment but also boosts company morale and creates team-building opportunities.
Conclusion
Tree plantation is essential for maintaining Bangalore’s status as a garden city amidst its rapid urbanization. By getting involved in local tree planting initiatives, residents can contribute significantly to making the city a healthier, greener place to live. Whether it’s through volunteering, donating, or educating, every small step can lead to sustainable urban development. Let’s join hands this planting season to deepen our roots and green our beloved city, Bangalore.

SMC Infrastructures comes-up with the Solution of Oxygen generator for high purity Oxygen to the society.
At SMC Infrastructures Pvt Ltd, we have always believed that serving people is what makes a business successful in real terms and not just earning profits. To make our contributions to society and help the needy in times of crisis, we had created the SMC Foundation in the year 2014 under the guidance of Suhas Mehta and Arun Ramchandra Seth.
Tumblr media
Understanding the present shortage of oxygen availability in hospitals in the pandemic, we joined the fight and decided to provide Covid Support by supplying the supply of Oxygen Generator to a hospital in Kalwa, Thane, and also arranged for a liquid oxygen transportation tanker to the Government of Maharashtra. Along with this, we undertook the distribution of Covid safety kits and food packets to needy people to secure and support them.
Our initiatives come at a time when it has been weeks of incessant struggle for hospitals and citizens to get a regular supply of oxygen, which is critical for a lot of patients hospitalized with COVID. We, at SMC Infrastructure, focus on excellence, be it in infrastructure or in our other areas of influence, and are geared to ensure that we are not just a company that executes projects for profit, but one that creates infrastructure for life.
As a part of our CSR initiative, we provide health insurance to all the employees of SMC Infrastructures Mumbai and their families and also give educational assistance and scholarships to their children. We are also
an active partner of the Baba Amte Foundation and collaborate with them to do our bit for providing education to the children of the downtrodden section of society.
Besides, we also undertake several environmental conservation actions like the tree plantation drive at Raja Canal STP site in Bangalore where we planted 100 trees of Teak and Sal.

I want to see the butterflies!
By Hemant Tulsian, Director – Operations, Fidelity India
As 2019 drew to a close, Fidelity India organized plantation drives in Chennai and Bangalore with the aim of planting 11,000 saplings across both locations.
Tumblr media
When I first saw the call for volunteers from India Fidelity Cares, Fidelity India’s CSR program, I immediately signed up for the event in Chennai. I could hardly wait for the day to arrive, and when it did, I headed over along with the team to the site identified for the activity. With a target of planting 6,000 saplings in Chennai, we were given a crash course at the site on the basics of gardening and planting saplings using the Miyawaki method, which ensures the growth of a thick forest in a fairly short period of time.
It was an inspiring and fun-filled morning along with the other volunteers and some of their family members, as we worked together with the aim of benefiting the environment. We were told that by planting these saplings, the temperatures in the area could be brought down by at least five degrees Celsius in just a year’s time, and also help conserve water, as the trees would help retain the ground water.
Fidelity along with our NGO partners has been working tirelessly to make a difference for the communities where we live and work. The overwhelming response from co-volunteers for Fidelity Cares events encourages and motivates each one of us to do even more with each activity. In the process, we learn different aspects of social responsibility, including aspects of sustainability.
Our small forest, once grown, would help to attract and serve as a habitat for several birds and insects. It would make the neighborhood a cohesive place to live in. When I asked my daughter why she had joined me for the plantation drive, her answer was simple yet thought-provoking… “I want to see the butterflies again!”
