So what is kcd about besides…knights? Gay knights? Henry? I am googling it too ofc but I want Your Perspective which is what potentially draws me into the game… 👀

I actually played KCD before KCD2 came out, which changes a lot of things, actually. Though Hans' and Henry's relationship was.... AMBIGUOUS, heterosexuality is forced on your player character quite a lot. Moreover, it's the kind of game that (until KCD2) attracted these weird, pseudo-fascist types obsessed with the medieval era. And to top it all, the dev team is Czech. I LOVE the Czechs (I'll expand on that) but I know that they're not the most open-minded people, to put it mildly. So Kingdom Come Deliverance was pretty much the last game on my list of "games that may have a canon gay romance in them".

Despite all that stuff, I loved it instantly. It's the dream roleplaying game if you're a History nerd. They tried to make it historically accurate to an extent that's genuinely surprising for a video game (Kickstarter funded, too!). I really, sincerely felt immersed in the medieval era everytime I played it, like a time travelling machine, and that got me EVERY time. Even the fighting system is fairly accurate to HEMA and period swordfighting, and I don't know another game that does it as accurately, not even Hellish Quart which is entirely HEMA based.

What's more, the setting is medieval Bohemia, aka present day Czechia, and this country's History is very much unknown. However, I've had a liking for Czechoslovak history for more or less 8 years now (see my Czechoslovak tag). So it was a real treat to me.

Despite the historical accuracy, the characters feel alive. They aren't depicted as more serious, more formal, or unhappier than modern people just because they are historical characters. They are lively, humorous, speak just like people their age should, and it's truly refreshing and adds to the immersion.

All the side quests are entertaining, they are not fillers. You'll spend a lot of hours playing the two games without feeling like the devs expanded their playtime artificially.

All and any possible romance was really well written. It's a man's world, so to speak, with Henry being a man-at-arms, and you can feel it, but the female characters were not cast aside and are just as likeable and admirable.

Henry himself is really Just Some Guy. You'd need to start with the first game to really see it, but he's not a hero or the chosen one of a prophecy. He's a blacksmith's boy, starting from pretty much zero, and his personality feels genuine and realistic. He's very easy to like. However, his ascent from practically lower class to the status of knight is not inaccurate, due to (spoil spoil spoil) so that ground's covered too.

Nothing will take you out of the immersion. There are very modern topics, like PTSD, homosexuality, and so on, but they're all treated in a historically compatible manner (looking at you DA: Veilguard). (note 2: I don't want to start a debate about Veilguard, but even if it's not a history-based game, it's still in a MEDIEVAL fantasy setting and using very modern vocabulary takes you out of it).

And if you're here for Hans x Henry, you'll be pleased, too. Be aware that it's a very slow burn, culminating at the end of KCD2, but it was really written like the one canonical romance, which frankly surprised me to the highest extent due to the reasons you now know. And even before KCD2, there's INSANE chemistry between them in KCD1. Not only them, but there's quite a few canonically gay/bi/etc characters in KCD2!

So yeah, don't spoil yourself and play the games for a good time machine session :)

My 21st-story balcony is Spider Heaven apparently. Last year I was blessed with a dozen zebra jumpers, and this year I have approximately EIGHT different orb weavers (mostly European garden spiders, I think) crisscrossing my windows. A mysterious blessing <3

Let's do a broad one here that I think applies to almost everything I'm actively writing at the moment (with one exception y'all may try to guess if inclined) - all of my girls run colder than their respective partners and all of them are clingy during sleep as a result. Circumstances and size differences are irrelevant here, this is just as much a part of my Type as the personality dynamics I'm drawn to.

Not anything specific consistently, but whatever I've been listening to will find its way into what I'm turning out. Lately I've been in existential-crisis mode and that means a lot of Lana Del Rey and I think that comes through a bit...

I'm happy with any comments I get, but I do especially like when people highlight specific lines of dialogue they like. I think that's my greatest strength as a writer and I like the confirmation.

I'm considering making Olivia in my modernized comic of Twelfth Night a black girl. However, her character is intelligent but foolish, somewhat obsessive over the protag, considered the most beautiful girl around, and she is dealing with the death of her cousin. Do these qualities fall into any harmful stereotypes I should avoid?

I'm not familiar with the Twelfth Night comic, but on a search, the characters appear to be in high school, so teenagers. Based on that, plus on its face, these traits don't read as problematic to me. I will explore areas where these traits can get dicey, though.

Infantilization. sacrifice and dealing with death

Be mindful of infantilization when it comes to her being portrayed as “intelligent but foolish.” Infantilization commonly affects Black people, where others downplay their capabilities and treats them in a condescending, child-like way. Watch out for ableism as a whole, really - what does foolish mean in the context of this character?

With the obsession aspect, I’m not overly concerned - I had my handful of crushes back in the day! Plus, it’s fine to give your Black characters a variety of characteristics. For this one, I'd keep an eye out for sacrificial traits. You can be obsessed without being willing to end your life for someone, especially without having a real relationship with them. 

As for the death of her cousin, it's natural to lose people and grieve, of course. 

Depending on the deceased's character race, gender and other identities, please add more than one of this character of that background. That way, you don't have the only, say, gay young Black man, as a dead character. 

Watch out for stereotypes when it comes to how this character dies, too. Depending on the circumstances, I'd either avoid stereotypical deaths (e.g. sacrificial negro) or make a social commentary out of it that's addressed in the narrative (e.g. death by violence, police brutality, etc.), which aren't light matters. 

If this isn't something you want to address, pick a death that doesn't encroach on these areas.

Fyi, I believe the asker is referring to their making a comic modernizing twelfth night, the Shakespeare play. Not sure if the playtext itself contains reference to characters’ ages, but that character doesn’t have an established age (compared to, say, the old knight in the play).

If its based on Shakespears Twelfth night then honestly its not a lot of things that hasnt been done. All-girls cast, all-boys cast, probably all-black cast and mixed cast so dont worry about that. Maybe not have Olivia be the only black person though

I moved into my current apartment two months ago and almost exactly at that time a clutch of jumping spiders hatched on my balcony :) so I’ve been watching all these tiny tiny spider babies grow and adventure outside! At least once a day one sneaks through the sliding door and I have to carefully lure it onto a paper towel and put it outside again. They’re growing so well, almost five mm long now :) my friends :)

@tricksypixie it is less exciting than this makes it sound - it’s more just shows how over the top my workplace can me. The forbidden, tax themed limerick:

There was a return from St. Paul

That reported no income at all

It was selected for Department review

So their tax liability grew

And from their bank they made a withdrawal

The reasons for it being rejected was that 1) someone could interpret this to mean that the return was selected for audit because no income reported which could be seen as a) unfair or b) providing information on how we select returns for audit (it isn’t). 2) someone could interpret the last line to be about someone trying to hide their money after being audited and we want to focus on how the vast majority of people voluntarily comply with tax laws (which is not at all what I was going for, in my head the character withdrew money to pay their bill…). I should also note that this was an internal contest for employees - obviously they wouldn’t accept antagonistic poems but with these issues …. it isn’t even like they we’re going to be publicly posted. 🤦🏻‍♂️

My work had a limerick contest and mine was eliminated from being voted on because it might give people the “wrong idea” 🥲

Garcy + a kiss to celebrate an engagement

Usual canon-divergence, PG-ish, also on ao3.

It is, objectively, not a romantic proposal.

Not that Lucy would describe herself as a romantic, at least not voluntarily or sober, but… the life she has had, as a reasonably feminine woman who can understand the catharsis of fluff, has given her a few baselines for this sort of thing. A proposal should be planned, for one thing. There should be pretty words involved. Asking familial permission is out of the question in her circumstances, she’ll allow that violation of tradition, but perhaps the rest of the team could’ve served as a substitute. There should be, if not a proper engagement ring, at least some cute substitute – even something edible would do as long as it does end up on her hand.

As it is, the nicest thing she can say about what actually happens is at least neither of them is bleeding when it does.

Perhaps she’s expecting too much. She will be the second wife, after all; perhaps whatever romantic inclinations he ever had, a personality trait she has no evidence for to begin with, got used up last time around. Perhaps doing anything the traditional way would bring back painful memories, and she can understand and respect and be calm about that but-

Effort, she thinks, would still be nice. Not this.

“Will you marry me?” he says like it’s the most casual thing in the world, and she’s pretty sure there were more emotions involved a few hours earlier when he asked if she’d seen a particular sweater recently, and no she hadn’t, she doesn’t borrow that one, it’s a bad color and it itches and-

It takes her a few moments to realize that he is in fact asking that question as seriously as a human being ever could.

At least it’s not a let’s-find-a-tax-loophole proposal like she’d expected. That would be worse. Barely.

They’ve talked about this in vague terms, like something they want to do when their war ends if it ever ends, a way of tethering themselves whenever they have to face the outside world again. It would make sense, the way those conversations go. More of a legal formality than a big step. The dynamic wouldn’t change. As it is, they are roommates who occasionally enjoy their attraction to each other, and she’s not sure they’re even technically dating, and-

“Yes,” she replies after a few heartbeats too long, and her frustration doesn’t mean a damn thing against how she feels.

It is not romantic, not really, but it’s real. She wants whatever this ends up meaning, however their relationship changes out of it, and they will change, she’s not delusional enough to think it really will be as simple and insignificant as it sounded last time they talked about it as a hypothetical a few weeks ago and-

She pushes herself up on tiptoe to kiss him, this absolute tree of a man who is apparently now her fiancé, and she should be questioning this so much more than she is. Engagement is a formality; they won’t actually marry until they’re out of current circumstances, months or years from now, unless it looks like the deprogramming process would be easier with legal immunity and god it probably would be and she wouldn’t be surprised if-

No. She will not overthink this. Not now. Not when there is a part of her that wants it more than anything.

Someday, she thinks as they break apart and she sees the sweet-sadness in his eyes, someday this will be one hell of a story to tell their children.
