i remember i did a genuine 'wahoo!' when wolfwood was brought back again in trigun 1998 after a few episodes being incommunicado. yes i do love you nicholas, you christian priest who has simultaneously something going on underneath and unfailing homoeroticism with the protagonist.

no surpise he's my absolute *favourite* in trigun. also i need more interactions with him and millie they are so adorable (⁠人⁠ ⁠•͈⁠ᴗ⁠•͈⁠)

perpetually and disastrously fascinated with the concept of the garden of gethsemane. you get a lot of people crying that jesus died for your sins or whatever but i never once thought--as a shitty catholic who hasn't read the bible, doesn't go to church, has one (1) sacrament and that's baptism--that maybe he didn't want to. he really didn't want to. he sits in the garden and he cries because he doesn't want to die. how perfectly and gorgeously, tragically human of him. there is no grand defiance of destiny. he will be strung up on the cross with the same materials his father would have used to make tables and chairs and dressers and he'll die like that, hanging in the air with all the other criminals, bleeding out and naked. what a thought, that jesus didn't want to die.

this is actually a trigun post because i've been thinking a lot about how there's no proper jesus figure on gunsmoke, just pretenders to the title. vash like...lives the jesus experience. all preachy and do-gooder and miracle worker at his own expense. knives styles himself with 12 apostles. wolfwood carries a cross. you know? they're all ape-ing jesus's vibes without actually committing to dying for anyone's sins. like. in tristamp knives demands that vash actually commits to the bit because all of them are not quite willing to actually do the thing. they're all avoiding the crucifixion.

in that way, is the planet gunsmoke not just the garden of gethsemane?
