from The Beatles Book Monthly, No 23, June 1965.
Tumblr media
JOHN: This month, Beatle People, I would like to give you an unbiased lecture about a truly sensational new book to be published, price ten and sixpence, on 24th June by Jonathan Cape, who are very good publishers as everybody knows.
PAUL: Hey! Wait a minute. He said an informal conversation not a flippin' commercial. We're both supposed to discuss things. Like the film frinstance.
JOHN: You discuss the film, frinstance, and I'll discuss this book. It's called "A Spaniard In The Works", folks, and it would be cheap at half the price.
PAUL: Don't you mean twice the price?
JOHN: You see, Beatle People, my learned colleague agrees that it's worth twice the price. Printed throughout in two glorious colours. Brown and green. Printed on real paper too, Beatle People. You can't lose, can you?
PAUL: Don't forget what John says. 24th June. Jonathan Cape. Ten and six-pence. "A Spaniel In The Circs.”
JOHN: "A Spaniard In The Works." Good grief, you'll have a Rolling Stone rushing out a book called "A Spaniel In The Circs" and all my good work will be undone. I say again, sir, undone with a capital UN.
PAUL: As I was about to say before I was Beatled, we've finished filming "Help!". Actually the last scenes were done at Twickenham a couple of weeks back but we've been called into the studios several times since for overdubbing. That means, well, you know when you see an outdoor scene in a film and the actors are miles away from the camera. Well, they can't use microphones or you'd notice them growing out of bushes or sticking round the corner of buildings. So if there is any dialogue in scenes like this they have to put it on the soundtrack afterwards. That's called overdubbing.
JOHN: There is no overdubbing in “A Spaniard In The Works" folks. No cheating and miming like that. A Spaniard If The Works" is live, LIVE, L-I-V-E. All Live. The book was written indoors using only close-range microphones, typewriters, ciggie-packets and green and brown ballpoint pens for the drawings. Remember, folks, only "A Spaniard In The Works" comes to you completely free from skin-irritating overdub.
PAUL: In Nassau we had to keep out of the sun because the scenes we did out there come at the very end of “Help!" and it would look funny if we were all brown and tanned in the snow sequence which you see earlier on and then pale and unhealthy in the Bahamas bit. All sorts of odd people that you'll know play parts in "Help!". Roy Kinnear, Frankie Howerd. The Queen Mother was nearly in one scene—but that was unintentional. She was driving by the film location in Nassau on her way to the airport after touring Jamaica.
JOHN: Pity she didn't stop and join us.
PAUL: We had a fabulous time down on Salisbury Plain a couple of weeks back. We did four days of location filming there with tanks and troops which were on loan from the Army. Bit chilly after Nassau with lots of rain showers and a cold wind but, without giving away any production secrets, I think the Salisbury scene is one of the funniest of the lot!
JOHN: Fun, fun, fun, with them chasing us, and us chasing them, and me chasing you and where's the tea Mal.
PAUL: One of the greatest free evenings we had during the making of the film was at Obertauern in the Austrian Alps. There isn't a great deal of night life but we made some of our own. It was the assistant director's birthday and we were at the Marietta Hotel. Dick Lester found an old piano in the hotel and we all had this gear sing-along session.
JOHN: It's a new craze. Yes, folks, it's all the rage. Have your own read-along session at home! A complete do-it-yourself read-along kit comes free inside every brown and green copy of "A Spaniard In The Works" PAUL: There's not much more I can say about the film without giving away very hush-hush secrets about the story. There's going to be a Royal Premiere in London on 29th July. At the Pavilion in Piccadilly Circus where "A Hard Day's Night" opened last summer. Then the film will start going the rounds in August and there's a New York premiere a week later. We do a European tour in June but we'll be back home long before the premiere. All I can say is I hope everyone enjoys the film. In a lot of ways we're all sorry the production is finished 'cos we had a great time making it.
JOHN: Is that all you've got to say?
PAUL: Yes, I think so.
JOHN: Well, if you've quite finished, perhaps you don't mind me having a quick word with Beatle People about this book.
PAUL: Which book is that, John? it says on this ciggie paper you've just handed me.
JOHN: I don't like talking about it really. People will think l'm plugging.
PAUL: Ah, go on, John, nobody'll think that.
JOHN: No, I can't. I'm bashful.
PAUL: Please…
JOHN: All right. Read all about "The National Health Cow" and "Cassandle" (on different pages). Read all about “Silly Norman" and "Benjamin Distasteful" (both in glowing green and beatle brown). These and fourteen other unbelievable fables before your very mouth in "A Spaniard In The Works”
PAUL: Aren't there drawings too, John? you asked me to say when you stopped the tape recorder just now.
JOHN: Yes, yes. Well, sort of. One of them (in brown and green which are very artistic colours and especially cheap to print, you see) is a full-page drawing of a fat budgie. Beatle People will be interested to know that I ate nothing but SWILL, the new deodorant bird seed, for six weeks in order to get into the right mood to draw this particular picture.
PAUL: What happened?
JOHN: I fell asleep on my perch but the picture came out O.K. I drew it in two minutes flat. Flat on my face at the foot of he perch.
PAUL: And what is the title of this new book of yours, John?
JOHN: Oh, I'm so sorry. Didn't I mention it?…

Storming of Bristol
The storming of Bristol, a port then second only in importance to London, on 26 July 1643 by Royalist forces led by Prince Rupert (1619-1682) was a major coup against the Parliamentarians during the English Civil Wars (1642-1651). The Royalists were able to break through the long perimeter fortifications, which were manned by a defensive force spread too thinly. Taken in a day but with many casualties on both sides, Bristol became a vital Royalist centre until its fall to the Parliamentarians after the siege of 1645.
From Edgehill to Bristol
King Charles I of England (r. 1625-1649) considered himself an absolute monarch with absolute power and a divine right to rule, but his unwillingness to compromise with Parliament, particularly over money and religious reforms, led to a civil war from 1642 to 1651. Fought between the 'Roundheads' (Parliamentarians) and 'Cavaliers' (Royalists) in over 600 battles and sieges, the war was a long and bloody conflict. The northern and western parts of England largely remained loyal to the monarchy but the southeast, including London, was controlled by Parliament. The Parliamentarians also controlled the Royal Navy, a significant impediment to Charles receiving reinforcements from the Continent and Ireland. The king would need a port if the war dragged on, but if he could capture London in a decisive engagement, perhaps the war would be quickly over. Charles made his intent clear and raised the royal colours at Nottingham on 22 August 1642.
The first major engagement of the war had been the Battle of Edgehill in Warwickshire on 23 October 1642, which ended in a draw. Charles then delayed and captured Oxford before turning on London, where he was rebuffed by the presence of a 20,000-strong Parliamentarian army at Turnham Green. The king decided to fight another day and retreated to Oxford, which became the Royalist capital. A series of skirmishes and small-scale battles followed over the next year as neither side sought to commit all of their troops in a single field engagement. Rather, both sides concentrated on capturing what strategically valuable towns and cities they could. There were, too, half-hearted negotiations to bring peace through the winter and spring of 1643, but it seems that both sides were confident that they could press their advantage better on the battlefield when warmer weather arrived.
The indecisive nature of the war so far had not helped the Royalists in their predicament concerning sea power. In the summer of 1643, Prince Rupert, Count Palatine of the Rhine and Duke of Bavaria, Charles' nephew and commander of the Royal cavalry, was tasked with capturing Bristol, second only to London as the kingdom's most important port and an important regional military stronghold. Bristol was a major commercial centre, exporting such regional goods as cheese from the Wessex vales and importing many vital raw materials. It was a naval base and so could control the Irish Sea, and it was a major regional administrative centre. At the time, Bristol had a civilian population of around 15,000, making it the second-largest city in England after the capital.
Rupert, who was still only 23, had gained invaluable experience during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) in Central Europe. Rupert had been involved in the siege of Breda in 1637 and had fought well, if a little impetuously, in the Civil War so far, notably at Edgehill. Bristol was his next important target, but he would have to overcome the city's defences which he knew the value of, having himself advised the king (and been ignored) that Royalist cities should be heavily fortified.

Flash Rogues Advent Calendar, Day 23
Title: `Tis Better To Give Day: December 23rd Rating: PG Warnings: A reference to the Rogues being crass. Summary: Anything can be competitive if you try hard enough.
Hartley knocked at the door with some trepidation, which only increased when Len opened it.  Both narrowed their eyes at the other.
“I’m here at your request,” Hartley said curtly, and the other man nodded.  “So what’s up?”
“We need an impartial observer to judge something, and you don’t really like any of us.  I’d ask Dillon, but you know how that’d go,” Len replied as he ushered the musician inside.  Most of the Rogues were gathering in the foyer, and they seemed to be arguing heatedly.
“Of course.  What’s the competition?  Most creative cheating at poker?  Trashiest collection of playing cards?”
(Hartley well-remembered the time the other guys had compared their favourite adult poker sets, as he’d never seen so many nude women in his life.)
“You’ll see.”
A few minutes later, Mick opened the door to the Rogues’ ‘living room’ and grinned excitedly at everyone waiting.  “It’s ready, guys!  Come look!”
The gang trooped into the other room, which was set up with one of the most spectacular Christmas trees Hartley had ever seen…and he’d seen a lot.  It was huge and lit with hundreds of coloured bulbs, decorated with festive ornaments that had probably been stolen from a store’s truck, and it concealed a rich bounty underneath: many wrapped gifts.
“What is this..?” Hartley asked with confusion.  In moments, Mark carried Josh into the room as both beamed widely, and the toddler became even more excited when he saw the beautiful tree.
“There’s tha wean of the hour!” Evan exclaimed, and he took a photo of Josh’s smiling face.
“Oh, I almost forgot,” Len said when he saw the camera, and pressed an even fancier one into Hartley’s hands.  “Could you get some pics of him opening the presents, please?”
Hartley was beginning to get very puzzled and even a little alarmed.  Cold never said please.  What was happening here?
“Open mine first!  Mine!” Axel insisted as he bounced around with tangible excitement.  Mark smiled and reached for the two boxes wrapped in bright comic book pages, handing them to his delighted son.
“Twee!” Josh burbled happily as he tore the wrapping off the gifts, throwing the paper wherever he could.  He squealed with joy when he saw the cute bath toys inside, and began to play with them when Mark took them out of the box.  Hartley and Evan took a few photos of his happy face and new toys.
“I got him that,” Axel declared smugly.  “I bought them at the store, didn’t even steal them.”
Josh pointed at a box wrapped with fiery-looking paper and Mick jumped to his feet with eager anticipation.  “That one’s from me!”
Mark handed it over and the toddler tore off the paper with determination, revealing a cute little outfit festooned with smiling cartoonish flames: pajamas, socks, and tiny mittens.  Josh loved this too, and Mick beamed with happiness at the child’s obvious delight.
Mark picked up a box with orange and green wrapping paper, and Evan didn’t need to say who it was from.  He looked tense and excited as Josh pulled off the paper, then grinned with relief as the baby reacted joyfully to the magnifying glass set (though Hartley wasn’t sure he even knew what it was).
“Every wean should have magnifying lenses an’ a wee microscope from a young age!” Evan told the assembled group proudly.  “It gives them a strong background in scientific principles before they stairt schule.”
“I mean I guess…” Axel said skeptically, still certain that his bath toys were the best gift.  But Josh was happy with everything he received, even if he didn’t really understand all of it.  And of course Evan and Hartley made sure to take photos of him curiously examining his new science set.
“I guess mine’s next,” Len said with uncharacteristic uncertainty, and Hartley realized he was anxious.  Josh began ripping the snowflake wrapping paper off the box, and opened it to reveal a slightly worn stuffed bear.  The toddler immediately screeched excitedly and hugged it to his chest, prompting Len to smile.
“It was Lisa’s, long ago.  I think she’d be glad the little guy’s getting some enjoyment out of it now,” Len said with a slight catch in his voice, and Mark looked up at him gratefully.
“Thank you, Cold.  That means a lot to me.”
“Sure, no problem.  Just glad he likes it and will appreciate it.”
Josh was still hugging the bear and babbling delightedly, so it was clear that he did.  The others let him play with it a bit before moving on to the last gift, from his father.
“It’s hard to know what they’ll like or will find meaningful a month or a year from now,” Mark admitted to the group as he handed the box to his son.  “So I tried to go with something classy, something he’ll always remember.”
Josh tore off the plain green wrapping paper and cheerily opened the box, discovering a sterling silver cup inside.  It was child-sized and beautiful in its simplicity, and was engraved with ‘Joshua’ in cursive script.
“I was selling some of my loot at the fence’s place when I saw this and knew it was perfect for the kiddo,” Mark explained.  “I paid the asking price and got one of his associates to etch it, and voila.”
Hartley refrained from a comment about the cup being seized as stolen goods if/when the Rogues got busted, because he didn’t want to bring down the group’s happy mood.  At least Mark hadn’t swiped it directly from some other unfortunate kid, and it really was a beautiful object.  Josh was now trying to give the stuffed bear a ‘drink’ from the cup, and it seemed like something he'd genuinely treasure as he grew older.
“So the reason you’re here is to judge the competition: which gift did he like best?” Len told Hartley, who immediately hemmed and hawed.
“Isn’t the important thing that he’s happy and had a nice time..?” Hartley said evasively, hoping to wriggle out of this.
“Of course it is, but we made a bet about who could make him happiest!” Axel insisted.  “And it was me!”
“He’s gonna love his jammies on chilly nights,” Mick said, sanguine.
“He’ll know more about lenses and science than any other wean in his class, which’ll make him feel sae braw aboot himself,” Evan countered.
“He sure as hell loves that bear,” was all Len said, and nobody could disagree.
Hartley thought quickly, a vital skill necessary for every Rogue.  “I can’t judge this because I’ve got a gift for him too and it wouldn’t be an impartial contest!”
“Oh come on!” Axel complained, as he knew a ruse when he saw one, but Hartley reached into his cloak and pulled out an emergency harmonica.  It was his weapon of last resort, as its metal casing was dented and the sound was somewhat tinny…which honestly made it the perfect gift for a toddler.  Especially when you weren’t on great terms with the kid's family.
Josh was thrilled to receive an instrument and immediately began making horrible noises with it, and soon everyone over the age of three was glaring at Hartley.  He grinned cheerfully.
“Sorry guys.  At least I got some great photos of him for you, and his happiness really is what’s important here.  You all made some great memories.”
“We did until that harmonica showed up,” Len glowered as Josh merrily tooted away, deeply off-key.
“You’ll thank me when he’s a great musician,” Hartley shrugged, and Mark sighed helplessly.
“It’s annoying, but he’s right.  Josh is happy and that’s all that matters.”
“I’m gonna teach him to play Despacito on that thing,” Axel announced, and Len pinched his nose in frustration.
“Okay, it’s time to eat.  There’ll be booze.  Lots and lots of booze.”

Happy 10th birthday to Prince George of Wales!
Born on 22 July 2013, George Alexander Louis is the eldest child of William, Prince of Wales and Catherine, Princess of Wales, the eldest grandchild of King Charles III and second in the line of succession to the British throne behind his father.
George was christened on 23 October by Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, in the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace. Prince George spent his first months at his parents' cottage on the grounds of Bodorgan Hall in Anglesey, Wales, before his family relocated to Kensington Palace in 2014.
He embarked on his first royal tour with his parents in April 2014, during which the Cambridges spent three weeks in New Zealand and Australia. In June 2015, George made his first public appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace following the Trooping the Colour parade. From 2015 to 2017, the family lived at Anmer Hall in Norfolk, where George started his education at the West Acre Montessori School Nursery in January 2016.
George started primary school under the name George Cambridge in September 2017 at the Thomas's School in Battersea. In 2022, the family moved to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor Home Park. Since September 2022, George and his siblings, Charlotte and Louis, have attended Lambrook, in Berkshire.

1917 01 23 Richthofen's 17th victory - Thomas La Padula
Richthofen's 17th victory.A short while after becoming Germany’s leading air ace and receiving the Por le Merite, the title of “Red Baron'' was born. The arrival of the new Albatros D.lll’s to the front and MvR’s transfer to Jasta 11 cemented a Richthofen Squadron of airplanes. There is a lot of legend and suggestion on the name Le Petit Rouge, Richthofen wrote,” It occurred to me to have my packing case painted all over in a staring red. The result was that everyone got to know my red bird. My opponents also seemed to have heard of the colour transformation. There is really no absolute reason why Richthofen began to fly a red plane. One theory is that it asserted him as “a leader” in the air, due him becoming Staffelfurhrer of Jasta 11 which at that time was not a crack unit. A lot or supposed reasons and antidotes that could all be construed as true or false. Supposedly all RAF units were aware of Le Petit Rouge, then again Richthofen could not be everywhere, and undoubtedly a red plane would have been unforgettable, even though according to Richthofen the British were the ones that gave the red plane its name. The reason why the plane was red till this day is speculative and has grown increasingly more romantic as the years pass on.A little after 4pm on January 23, 2017, Richthofen had an encounter with an FE.8, No.6388, a pusher type biplane. Flying his new red Albatros D.lll, Staffelfurhrer Richthofen came upon 2nd Lt John Hay photographing the German artillery at the front. When the British pilot Hay noticed Richthofen he bolted but not before MvR got off about 150 rounds into the FE.8., the plane then ignited, and began burning as it fell from the sky. At 500 feet Lt. Hay the pilot was observed either jumping or falling from the plane. Richthofen in his combat report states that he assumed Hay was already dead, due to the fact he did not fire a shot. It also was not uncommon for aviators to jump from burning aircraft since parachutes had not yet made their appearance and some home devices were unreliable at best. Lt Hays body was recovered by Canadian troops southeast of the village of Aix Noulette.

Pope Saint Gregory VII

Saint Mary Magdalen de’ Pazzi, Virgin
or
Saint Bede the Venerable, Priest, Doctor.
Thursday, Seventh Week of Eastertide
(Liturgical Colour: White: A(1))
First Reading Acts of the Apostles 22:30; 23:6-11 You must bear witness in Rome.
Wishing to determine the truth about why Paul was being accused by the Jews, the commander freed him and ordered the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin to convene. Then he brought Paul down and made him stand before them.
Paul was aware that some were Sadducees and some Pharisees, so he called out before the Sanhedrin, “My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees; I am on trial for hope in the resurrection of the dead.” When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the group became divided. For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection or angels or spirits, while the Pharisees acknowledge all three. A great uproar occurred, and some scribes belonging to the Pharisee party stood up and sharply argued, “We find nothing wrong with this man. Suppose a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?” The dispute was so serious that the commander, afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them, ordered his troops to go down and rescue Paul from their midst and take him into the compound. The following night the Lord stood by him and said, “Take courage. For just as you have borne witness to my cause in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness in Rome.”
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 16:1-2a and 5, 7-8, 9-10, 11
R/ Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope. or R/ Alleluia.
Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge; I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you.” O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup, you it is who hold fast my lot.
R/ Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope. or R/ Alleluia.
I bless the LORD who counsels me; even in the night my heart exhorts me. I set the LORD ever before me; with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
R/ Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope. or R/ Alleluia.
Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices, my body, too, abides in confidence; Because you will not abandon my soul to the nether world, nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption.
R/ Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope. or R/ Alleluia.
You will show me the path to life, fullness of joys in your presence, the delights at your right hand forever.
R/ Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope. or R/ Alleluia.
Gospel Acclamation John 17:21
Alleluia, alleluia. May they all be one as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that the world may believe that you sent me, says the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel John 17:20-26 May they all be one.
Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying: “I pray not only for these, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me. Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, the world also does not know you, but I know you, and they know that you sent me. I made known to them your name and I will make it known, that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.”

Pope Saint Gregory VII
(Liturgical Colour: White: A(1))
(Readings for the memorial)
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Thursday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
First Reading Acts of the Apostles 20:17-18a, 28-32, 36 Keep watch over yourselves and over the whole flock of which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, in which you tend the Church of God.
From Miletus Paul had the presbyters of the Church at Ephesus summoned. When they came to him, he addressed them, “Keep watch over yourselves and over the whole flock of which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, in which you tend the Church of God that he acquired with his own Blood. I know that after my departure savage wolves will come among you, and they will not spare the flock. And from your own group, some will come forward perverting the truth to draw the disciples away after them. So be vigilant and remember that for three years, night and day, I unceasingly admonished each of you with tears. And now I commend you to God and to that gracious word of his that can build you up and give you the inheritance among all who are consecrated.” When he had finished speaking he knelt down and prayed with them all.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 110:1, 2, 3, 4
R/ You are a priest for ever, in the line of Melchizedek.
The LORD said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand till I make your enemies your footstool.”
R/ You are a priest for ever, in the line of Melchizedek.
The scepter of your power the LORD will stretch forth from Zion: “Rule in the midst of your enemies.”
R/ You are a priest for ever, in the line of Melchizedek.
“Yours is princely power in the day of your birth, in holy splendor; before the daystar, like the dew, I have begotten you.”
R/ You are a priest for ever, in the line of Melchizedek.
The LORD has sworn, and he will not repent: “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.”
R/ You are a priest for ever, in the line of Melchizedek.
Gospel Acclamation Mark 1:17
Alleluia, alleluia. Come after me, says the Lord, and I will make you fishers of men. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Matthew 16:13-19 You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church.
When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Saint Mary Magdalen de’ Pazzi, Virgin
(Liturgical Colour: White: A(1))
(Readings for the memorial)
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Thursday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
First Reading 1 Corinthians 7:25-35 A virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord.
In regard to virgins, I have no commandment from the Lord, but I give my opinion as one who by the Lord’s mercy is trustworthy. So this is what I think best because of the present distress: that it is a good thing for a person to remain as he is. Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek a separation. Are you free of a wife? Then do not look for a wife. If you marry, however, you do not sin, nor does an unmarried woman sin if she marries; but such people will experience affliction in their earthly life, and I would like to spare you that.
I tell you, brothers and sisters, the time is running out. From now on, let those having wives act as not having them, those weeping as not weeping, those rejoicing as not rejoicing, those buying as not owning, those using the world as not using it fully. For the world in its present form is passing away.
I should like you to be free of anxieties. An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord. But a married man is anxious about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, and he is divided. An unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord, so that she may be holy in both body and spirit. A married woman, on the other hand, is anxious about the things of the world, how she may please her husband. I am telling you this for your own benefit, not to impose a restraint upon you, but for the sake of propriety and adherence to the Lord without distraction.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 148:1-2, 11-13, 13-14
R/ Young men and women, praise the name of the Lord. or R/ Alleluia.
Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise him in the heights; Praise him, all you his angels, praise him, all you his hosts.
R/ Young men and women, praise the name of the Lord. or R/ Alleluia.
Let the kings of the earth and all peoples, the princes and all the judges of the earth, Young men, too, and maidens, old men and boys. Praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted.
R/ Young men and women, praise the name of the Lord. or R/ Alleluia.
His majesty is above earth and heaven. He has lifted up the horn of his people. Be this his praise from all his faithful ones; from the children of Israel, the people close to him. Alleluia.
R/ Young men and women, praise the name of the Lord. or R/ Alleluia.
Gospel Acclamation John 8:31b-32
Alleluia, alleluia. If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, says the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Mark 3:31-35 Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.
The mother of Jesus and his brothers arrived at the house. Standing outside, they sent word to him and called him. A crowd seated around him told him, “Your mother and your brothers and your sisters are outside asking for you.” But he said to them in reply, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Saint Bede the Venerable, Priest, Doctor
(Liturgical Colour: White: A(1))
(Readings for the memorial)
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Thursday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
First Reading 1 Corinthians 2:10b-16 We have the mind of Christ.
Brothers and sisters: The Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God. Among men, who knows what pertains to the man except his spirit that is within? Similarly, no one knows what pertains to God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand the things freely given us by God. And we speak about them not with words taught by human wisdom, but with words taught by the Spirit, describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms.
Now the natural man does not accept what pertains to the Spirit of God, for to him it is foolishness, and he cannot understand it, because it is judged spiritually. The one who is spiritual, however, can judge everything but is not subject to judgment by anyone. For who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to counsel him? But we have the mind of Christ.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 119:9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14
R/ Lord, teach me your statutes.
How shall a young man be faultless in his way? By keeping to your words.
R/ Lord, teach me your statutes.
With all my heart I seek you; let me not stray from your commands.
R/ Lord, teach me your statutes.
Within my heart I treasure your promise, that I may not sin against you.
R/ Lord, teach me your statutes.
Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes.
R/ Lord, teach me your statutes.
With my lips I declare all the ordinances of your mouth.
R/ Lord, teach me your statutes.
In the way of your decrees I rejoice, as much as in all riches.
R/ Lord, teach me your statutes.
Gospel Acclamation cf. John 6:63, 68c
Alleluia, alleluia. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life; you have the words of everlasting life. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Matthew 7:21-29 He taught them as one having authority.
Jesus said to his disciples: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?’ Then I will declare to them solemnly, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers.’ “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined.” When Jesus finished these words, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

Blast from the past: The Duality of Dress Codes with Meghan Markle by u/Mickleborough
Blast from the past: The Duality of Dress Codes, with Meghan Markle Admittedly dress codes can be tricky. What to wear to a drinks party, the opera, a daytime wedding - it really can vary.My guess is that the Royal Family have fewer problems getting it right than mere mortals. They’ve been to many, many similar functions. They can get more precise details from organisers (unlike friends: ‘Anything’s fine’). And they have a ton of advisers on hand who can guide them. Here are some occasions when - notwithstanding the above, Meghan didn’t get it quite right. Why is that?Trooping the Colour, June 2018Here’s Meghan on the balcony with a couple of longer-serving royals for contrast.Know that in the Meghan & Harry Netflix lie-a-thon, Meghan claims that she dressed, amongst other things, in a way ‘so I could just blend in. Like, I’m not trying to stand out here. So there’s no version of me joining this family and trying not to do everything I could to fit in. I don’t want to embarrass the family.’To be fair, Meghan grew up knowing that, under the Constitution, she had the right to bare arms.Australian Geographic Society Awards, Sydney, October 2018In her ‘I can’t believe I’m not getting paid for this’ tour of Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, and Tonga with Harry, Meghan turned up at the Australian Geographic Society Awards ceremony in Sydney wearing a £10,000 / $12,708 cocktail dress from Oscar de la Renta.A cocktail dress sounds right for the event, but this looks a bit over-the-top - even if she was presenting an award. What women wear. Overdress much, Meghan?Cirque du Soleil benefit at the Royal Albert Hall, January 2019This benefit was for Sentebale, one of Harry’s charities. Again, sequinned evening gown compared to the less formal, but still smart, garb of other women. This was the night that Meghan claims to have had suicidal thoughts.‘It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to.’ For someone who allegedly sobbed through the performance - that eye makeup and foundation are more waterproof than a rubber mac.Reception at the British Ambassador’ residence, Rabat, Morocco, February 2019On a mysteriously hastily arranged visit to Morocco, Meghan and Harry attended a reception at the home of the British Ambassador. There they met ‘young entrepreneurs, business leaders, and athletes’. So not even the Diplomatic Corps - more like pressing the flesh of local dignitaries to build goodwill.‘Pregnant? I’m just carrying this for a friend.‘ The infamous £99,000 / $126,000 Dior bedsheet. Note the business attire of the other guests. The Lion King premiere, London, July 2019Here’s Meghan attending her first film premiere as a royal. Film premieres with royals in attendance are glamorous affairs, so I’ve been led to believe.‘What is she wearing?’ Beyoncé wears a fixed smile.Note that the men - Harry shilling speaking to Bob Iger of Disney, and Jay-Z - are all in black tie. The equivalent for women would be evening gowns. Meghan at best is in a cocktail dress, thereby dissing Queen Bey. Maybe Meghan hadn’t ever been to a film premiere?Below is a photo of an anonymous attendee (only Meghan and Harry topics allowed in this sub!) at a recent film premiere:Stop the press, who’s that? post link: https://ift.tt/KYIL5TD author: Mickleborough submitted: June 23, 2023 at 10:20PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit
