"Troublegum"THERAPY?

THE BEYONDと共に、1990年代前半のイギリス/アイルランドオルタネイティブメタル代表格を担い、現在も活動を続けるTHERAPY?の代表作と称しても差し支えないだろう1994年2作目。日本でも当時結構流行りましたからね、これ。1作目のアルバムはヘヴィメタル、インダストリアル、オルタネイティブロック等の要素が混在し、その混沌とした雰囲気がかなり聞く人を選びそうな感じだったけど、こちらは一転、恐らくは誰でも聴けるほどにキャッチーな仕上がりとなっている。パーカッシブなリズムを交えたメタリックなパンクロックで、当時ハードコアという形容もされたか。とにかくメロディアスかつスリリングな楽曲が魅力的。ソリッドなギターの鳴りも気持ちがいい。音楽的志向も大きく整理され変な振れ幅がない。ヘヴィメタルのセオリーから解放されるだけで、これだけ新鮮でカッコいい音が出来るんだという感動はあったな。BLACK SABBATH再評価方面ではなくこういうのがもっと出てくれれば、僕もパワーメタルに固執することはなかったよなぁ…。
