Evil Genius Chronicles Podcast for September 9 2021 - Shaking my Baton at the Head of the Parade
In this episode, I play a song by Hill Country Devil; listener Reed Knight asks about my history in pursuing my hobbies at possibly great lengths; Oxford Books and later Oxford Too were my weekend pilgrimage; I had a moment of clarity about a work laptop; I worked on the UPS Campus Ship product; the dumbest thing I’ve heard in my career came from the Innoplex; I started listening to Evo Terra’s show Podcast Pontifications; I completely fail to understand Adam Curry’s Value4Value system; I am not trying to avoid human contact with automatic Bitcoin sending.

The self-hosting journey continues - documenting my journey away from Google's ADD and onto self-hosting. Although I've had a website since the mid-90s, it was 2005 or thereabouts that I first started hosting my own sites rather than relying on other sites.

Solus is EVEN AWESOMER!
So much love for Solus. Discord finally got a Linux version, and it got added to the main repositories last night. Installed it, it works fine. It just works. It just fucking works.
Along with the update that added Discord to the software center, there was an update for another piece of software, Trackma. If you don’t know what Trackma is, basically, it’s an application that syncs with sites like MyAnimeList and VNDB, and can be used for tracking your media consumption on those sites without having to keep a few browser tabs open. However, up until last night, there was a bug where trying to use MyAnimeList with it didn’t work. This is significant, because out of the sites supported by Trackma, MAL is the only one I use. So on Friday, I did some digging and found out that Trackma actually had an update back in November that fixed the issue. So, I went on Twitter and tweeted, “Hey, is there any place I can properly ask for an update to Trackma? It’s had a fix for a major bug...” Then, the community manager for Solus, Joshua Strobl, replied to me, saying that the most recent update was added to the unstable repos, and that he would add Trackma to his TTRSS feed (whatever that is) to make sure any future updates are applied. Last night, I was able to apply that update, along with 219 other updates (this was a major group of updates), and now, Trackma works perfectly. How awesome is that?

Currently using HostGator and their “Baby” hosting plan, and paying $11.95/mo ($143.40/yr). Been there for years now. Lately I’ve been noticing more and more lag when trying to load up my WordPress sites. Multiple performance reports indicate “server response time” as a bottleneck. I’m not pushing many users, if any, I just hate the fact that I see “waiting on mydomain.com…” in the status bar when pulling up my page. Should also add that I’m running a TTRSS instance and have dabbled with other self hosted apps (OwnCloud, NextCloud, MediaWiki, etc.).
Looking into my options was thinking I should bite the bullet and dive into a full $10/mo VPS a la Digital Ocean and migrate everything over (WordPress, TTRSS, email).
I’m confident I can get everything setup, configured, and secured properly, but the lingering question I have is would it be worth all the trouble? Do you all think I would see any performance increase with this move? Anyone done something similar and had good/bad results? Any feedback you all could share would be appreciated.

Evil Genius Chronicles Podcast for December 8 2022 - I Hate His Fat Voice
In this episode, I play a song by Domenico + 2; I just realized the Garrison Keillor influence on this very podcast; the sandwich generation is wearing on us; I have no interest in true crime anything; have I completely lost the taste for cringey comedy?; I did send letters to voters via Vote Forward; am I individually on the hook for taking free and legal options?; I hearken back to Allan Havey’s Night after Night; I don’t know who Ben Shapiro is or what the Podcast Movement controversy; I have a narrow window of acceptable self-regard; there was something in the air in the mid-2000s maker culture; decluttering is full of overwhelming decisions; Scoble melted down over a timetable;

great rundown of your setup. I’m a Nextcloud fan, gotta learn more about PeerTube. I haven’t tried the Nextcloud news app, I’ve used Tiny Tiny RSS for a while and especially like the Micropub plugin (bookmark/like/reply from inside TTRSS) but I’ll have to give it another look. Thanks for sharing!
