Proteus sat on a fallen log and hung his lamp on one of the branches. It was a rather rainy day, but he didn’t mind it. When it rained, all the animals go into hiding leaving him with the forest to himself.
Proteus produced a fishing rod and casted it into the roaring stream below, even though he doesn’t need to eat, he still enjoyed a nice fish dinner once in a while. In fact, he could do with a nice hot fish dinner right now.
He hummed to himself a little tune until a familiar ball of golden light came over to him. It hovered over the log seemingly curious of what he was doing.
“Hello Rusty.” Proteus said to the ball of light, “I see you have decided to take a bit of a break from your engine form, eh?”
The light darted back and forth a little bit as if agreeing with proteus’s words. As much as Rusty enjoyed leaving his engine form in the mortal realm, it did come with some downsides, one of them being that only a portion of his god form is visible in the mortal realm and he couldn’t exactly speak in this form in this realm. But he would admit that he enjoyed being able to fly across the island and see sights that he couldn’t see from the rails.
Proteus smiled at Rusty, “how long do you have until you have to go back?”
Rusty slowly moved methodically above the log, Proteus nodded, “half an hour, I see.” He made room on the log, “you can stay with me here if you want to.”
Rusty hesitated for a moment before slowly lowering onto the log next to proteus, the two sat in silence listening to the rain pattering and the river flowing below them.

Archive of AU: Star Rails Chronicle
So, basically I did this on Twitter, and I'm thinking I should 'archive' it here too since this Tumblr account is about TTTE (and Touhou) so some of you can read it and not confused when I make somw artworks or writings for this AU.
Tumblr media
Like I said in my first artwork of Sir Handel and Peter Sam, In a nutshell, how all of this happened is: Sir Handel and Peter Sam got into an argument; Peter Sam met Proteus and wished Sir Handel would stop being such a prick; wish granted; now Sir Handel's memories are gone.
Tumblr media
In my art style, I tend to give a character unusual eyes to emphasize something unusual about them; that's why Sir Handel's eyes look like dead fish. Since Proteus now hunts Peter Sam for the payment of the wish (which is HIS SOUL), he hides this fact from everyone but feels guilty.
While Sir Handel's memories were gone, he developed another persona (nice and thoughtful), because imagine waking up without memories and having people who claimed to be your friends and family tell you that you're used to doing awful things. You'd be like, "Oh my God, I am a horrible person." And trying to change.
But there's also a problem. Since memories are sometimes the 'binder' of your relationships with others, now that the memories are gone, who are these people to you? That's why, deep down, Sir Handel doesn't actually feel anything with them, but he craves to be a person again.
While now Peter Sam (who, yes, in this AU has a little bit of savior complex tendencies) is trying so hard with anything to jog Sir Handel's memories without telling the truth about Proteus. Since this AU is also an OC story, yeah, secretly desperate Peter Sam even 'used' Sri as a pawn to make Sir Handel remember.
2. Duncan used to work in the RAF with Douglas too. Before finally getting sent to the factory (which he hates) to work there.
3. Rusty is actually sensitive to supranatural disturbances. They (yeah, I love enby Rusty headcanon) can't see ghosts, but they know that something, someone, or some place had a different vibe. But they also like being unfazed(?) by the horror, if you get what I mean.
You can ask them to watch the most scary and disturbing video you found on the internet, and they'll say, "Hmm, this is not that scary, though." 🤨
4. Rheneas is into witchcraft and the occult. No, he's not practicing it or being an occultist or something. It's more like he got a stack of books about it and studied them.
It all began when Skarloey said to him, sometime after their centennial party:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Some of you already know this. That my TTTE AU is also Touhou AU. Every acts kinda focused on one thing (Act 1 is TTTE focused, act 2 is Touhou focused) but they did crossovering(?) in some point, if that makes sense.
Anyway; The reason why Proteus couldn't just approach Peter Sam in their house is because Skarloey asked Yukari to mess with the boundary around the house so any 'magical' creature couldn't trespass.
This means Skarloey did know there was something strange happening on the railway. He just kept silent about it.

Someone sent me an ask about how Andrew Lloyd Weber's acid trip of a musical Starlight Express would work on Sodor, so I did some research.
My findings to date:
This play has never had a consistent song or cast list at any point, and is seemingly changed on a whim, with songs being swapped and changed depending on the production or date.
I can't stress that enough. Andrew Lloyd Weber had to go and re-write the long-running German production in 2018 because it was virtually unrecognizable from the original play due to 30+ years of gradual changes.
(The German play is in its own custom made theater btw. Of course it is.)
The original cast soundtrack (which is what's on Spotify, and is not even remotely all the songs that have ever appeared in this song) actually slaps really hard in spots, but having watched old VHS bootlegs of shows from the 90's (and YouTube videos of a Singaporean production from a few years ago) I feel that much of the "this slaps" energy comes from the fact that the cast is standing still in a recording studio, and the songs were then professionally mixed.
That's an important distinction to make because the songs are usually preformed live by a group of mic-ed up lunatics on roller skates, which is naturally going to degrade the quality of the audio somewhat.
Yeah this is performed on roller skates. I knew that already but God damn.
This says nothing of the plot, which is insane - it's nominally about a rusty old steam engine trying to win a race to impress a modern/attractive passenger car, but there's a decidedly large amount of god/worship overtones? The "starlight express" is apparently some kind of actual thing that characters can pray(?) to for guidance.
We also need to remember that this entire story is happening on a child's toy train set. The child himself is "control", which is some kind of other omniscient godlike entity?
This creates some... interesting context for some of the characters, like the (spiteful) breakvan CB, who just straight up has a song where he talks about crashing trains for fun.
I should also mention that Andrew Lloyd Weber made a serious attempt to adapt the Railway Series books to a cartoon format, and only came up with Starlight Express after he got turned down by Granada TV.
And you know what? You can kind of see the RWS influence here: CB is basically the Spiteful Brakevan turned up to 11, the entire "old engine has to prove himself" plot is basically any Edward story when you view it from a distance, and the steam vs diesel / old vs modern conflict is very similar to a lot of Awdry plots (again, on a very basic level). If this was done in a world where Sodor was real, I can totally see even more references to the Island - most of the character names, maybe, and some of the songs.
(Hilariously, the main character is named Rusty, which I'm sure went over fabulously on the Skarloey Railway.)
Finally, let's just talk about the costumes, which looks like what would happen if the TTTE humanization art community was bad at what they did.
I'm being serious.
Tumblr media
These are supposed to be trains.
@asktrio516 is good enough that she could probably do better than this with her eyes shut.
-
I bet that Andrew Lloyd Weber showed this once on Sodor, and got laughed off the Island faster than you can say "unintentional comedy."

What are your favorite three stories/episodes for TTTE?
Since you said TTTE specifically, you've excluded my absolute favourites, but I'll see what I can do. In no particular order:
No.1 - The Flying Kipper - I'll start with the obvious one. The sets here are gorgeous, especially the spring-y ones, my eyes can't get enough of that:
Tumblr media
The whole episode is building on what's already been happening throughout the season, the swift and majestic climax to what might be the greatest arc of the show - being Henry's. (Although, in a small, hurt voice, I must add that they knackered it by not doing Super Rescue.) The first Fat Controller is at his best here - he seems to have garnered an appreciation for Henry by this point that was totally absent in Tunnel. He doesn't arse around the problem any longer by this time - he goes the distance and gets Henry a rebuild (which he's always needed and Hatt could've really done it earlier, but the Welsh coal was enough of a stop-gap to keep him happy.) Owd shape Henry is in his most dire situation ever at this point, the fear of God would have been in instilled in him somewhere between the 4th and 5th bit of brakevan that landed on him, and he'd be a likely mechanical write-off. Henry might be easily forgiven for breaking down here completely, and becoming an emotional wreck. But he comes back after his rebuild stronger and better and harder then ever before, which is a real +1 to his tenacity meter. The crash itself is so beautifully grounded and real-feeling, multiple shots, close-ups, the sound is just real enough to pull you into the scene and for a split-second you feel Henry's pain here. Then the next shot, the cold light of day revealing the damage. Ooh the chills:
Tumblr media
I'm aware I'm sorta broken-recording what others have already said (and who doesn't love the Flying Kipper lol) so I'll leave this one here.
No.2 - Escape. I'll start with Douglas - he's deathly afraid of the idea of scrap (understandable, a fate he nearly faced himself), but when confronted with another engine in that situation, he dives in without qualms to help. I can't help but think Douglas sees a bit of himself in Oliver, sometimes. Oliver is great here, he doesn't do so well in later (CGI) seasons, but his earnest, earthy emotions here are beautiful. Although his condition appearance wise isn't at all right - he is a complete rust-bucket, they wayy overdid it. But hey, the classic seasons overdid a number of things. And underdid more. The shot of Douglas and Ollie moving across the frame, only really visible as silhouettes, is hauntingly beautiful.
Tumblr media
The tension throughout the scene where they leave the yard is so high I can't get enough. Like you can tell everyone involved was clenching real hard, including the engines, and you in turn probably are as well watching the episode. The sound is amazing, the high-octane music, the subtle cacophony of dog barking and engine... Also barking is delightful to the ears. At the beginning, Edward death-glaring Douglas when the latter had a go at him was a great laugh, then Edward soundly schooling Douglas on the matter afterwards:
Tumblr media
Mood. We need more of this. Edward is so unafraid of telling people what's what. Douglas too for that matter, as he technically wasn't wrong in calling Edward out for standing about - but then, he's probably been working all morning, give the poor geezer a break. Angelis' narration here is very good, he was trying with this one. Also, 1400s are nice and preservation is nicer still, I must is give points for that.
No.3 - Rusty to the Rescue. And you kinda go - wait, AS, you're meant to be about realism! This story completely dismantles the whole canon and slings realism out the window! And... idc. If I were ranking on realism Escape wouldn't be on here either. But about RttR. Rusty's character here is the absolute best, he is the MVP of all diesels, don't even @ me. His little 'Shed & Sidings Inspection Diesel' bit is so perfectly done, what a cunning wheeze. The way he is shown to be of caring nature, inquiring into his driver's worries straight away. Also, the 'spring-y' sets are back, better then ever. Who doesn't love bluebelles? (Bluebells? Sp?) Rusty here is also incredibly intelligent - he sees the need for an engine and immediately makes a B-line for Douglas, clever little git. Then when Douglas says there's no chance of a Steam Support Force, our little Ruston takes matters onto his own buffers and rattles off on his own recogniscence. Ok, the narrow gauge line going that far is mental, like, completely radio rental, but I'll forgive it. The set of the Other Railway yard, with the diesel's collective, bellowing voice, and their familiar shapes with backs turned on the camera. Now, for the bit I really wanted to get to - Our Boy Stepney. Discounting the fact he's not BR Black here, his entire little existence here makes me love him. Now, he was hella underused after this, and this story really muddies the water on where he's meant to live, but hey - I'm a sucka for a Terrier, so I'll allow it. His driver being there to keep him company is great. The real Stepney has (or at least, had) her 1960s driver's name painted in her cab, as was the old LBSCR tradition. (The real Stepney is a she btw, don't @ me on that either.) I like to think that after this story, Stepney (the character) carries his driver's name as an eternal thank you for not abandoning him in that scrapyard.
Tumblr media
Look at him! With his scarf and flask and smile. MVP of enginemen. Then the next exchange, between Rusty and Stepney:
'Do you like bluebelles?'
'Yes. Bluebelles are beautiful.'
'Good, you'll soon be seeing lots of them because I'm getting you out of here.' The bravery. The determination. The tenacity. Stepney has no power to stop Rusty here. Rusty is unstoppable and Steppers is just along for the ride by this time.

Also this shot:
Tumblr media
Totally wrong in terms of gauge, but sodding atmospheric. Also, 'Mission Accomplished!'

Encanto Engines AU: Mirabel and the Magic Rail
Hello, thought I share some of my ideas 💡 of a Encanto/ sentiment vehicles think Ttte, I’m not sure if those characters would appear but more of a expy versions of them. Basically there are many thoughts on how this would act:
1. Mirabel gets a gift that results in her making all vehicles like trains, locomotives, buses, cars, boats/ships come to life, wether it be like Casita or non faceless plus her connection with the mystical engine of a expy Lady who she protects and takes care alongside other magical engines like entities (Proteus, Stepney, a diesel oc called Chamomile who’s gothic, deadpan  and acts as a guide to lost souls, both vehicle and human) while at the same time helping vehicles who are at risk at becoming scarp in the “Mainland” outside at the Encanto , the versions of Sodor, which now has rails and is considered to be a safe haven rumors with Mirabel being like a savior towards the vehicles who tries her utter hardest to give them rights and protect them to giving them a good life
2. The Madrigals are conductors think like Mr.conductor and Mirabel is still given the gift of having Lady as her chosen heir with everything coming to life but she is also the guardian and protector of the Gold Dust as it turns out that’s keeps them alive instead of Mirabel bringing them to life as it’s Lady and her fellow entities who she then protects despite the D10 expy destroying them and Lady being forced to flee into the Encanto Mountains to recover with only Mirabel and Antonio be allowed there as everyone else would get lost forever but are still trying to help give non faceless vehicles a better life while restoring the gods (Antonio ends up saving Stepney as it;s his first time out of the Encanto and ends up becoming quite fond of him, plus realizing how horrible their lives are outside and wanting to help Mirabel with her outings
3. Third would be that once having a gift they would then be connected to a vechile with Antonio being connected to a expy Rusty the little Diesel engine and gets a lot of distrust from the steamies but all in all they become a big railway family that even if Mirabel didn’t;t receive a gift since the sentinel machines were already alive in the first place and the family tries to give them better lives and keep adopting them, plus the part where they can turn into humanoid like beings like those ttte humanizations with grey skin, wheels, being more strong but still non human like, plus they are given the golden whistles at the age of 5 to have gold dust like the second option
Each Family member with a machine, whether alive or not: maybe I’ll do another post on which engine would fit which
Isabela:
Tumblr media
A Fairy Queen which is in the East Indian Railway Nr. 22,[1] is a steam locomotive built in 1855, restored by Loco Works Perambur, Chennai in 1997, would fit as it is technically one of the most lovely locomotives and is a luxury railway with many decorative designs akin to Isabela’s dress before and after
There would be versions of the Skarloey, Ardesdale, Culdee railways as the Encanto becomes bigger and installed with railway with Mirabel having the most knowledge as she would be an avid railway enthusiast  and most of the them being large engines that identify as feminine while many having trucks being masculines and coaches and that the engines will say something in other people’s or machines defense or fall in love with a Edward/Boco expy being married as trains rules don’t apply to human things and because not of them are straight and they can’t have children as they’re sterile but they can adopt many younger vehicles  or many trains ocs,
i’m not sure if Lady expy would be with Bruno and Mirabel with a Duncan expy who absolutely love his tall gf and would die for her via attacking anyone with his wheels, Lady being calm and understanding around Bruno as she understands the feeling of not being useful as she feels protectiveness as her magic constantly brings machines to life and magical powers that drained her so much that it felt her weak during the d10 attack since she’s felt the need to help others with her being rare and that if they can turn into humanoid like, Lady would state that he looks lovely and compliments everyone, plus the vehicles would be helping with many things, if they needs someone to listen to or they want advice or more personal questions with Camilo with their gender identity alongside their family (I hc them as genderfluid) Antonio questioning if boys can marry each other as he has a crush on his new best friend Ivo hugh/Luke expy as he gets older but due to him being a machine wonders if that relationship is forbidden or how he cried that Stepney would retire and be scrapped
Their relationship: Lady would be Pansexual , Bruno be Demi ace and Lady would be like “a”My 3.5000 children even though some that they are older than me, have seen you as a father-uncle honorary figure and have adopted you 🥰

Rusty’s gender
In both of my AUs (human and regular) Rusty is a god with a mortal form, because of this, they don’t have any XX or XY chromosomes let alone any DNA, or any genitalia to begin with seeing that they don’t need to perform basic human functions such as using the bathroom or reproducing as their duty is to guard and protect the island’s engines. Even in their god form they are genderless as it is not necessary to their job. That, and they are a machine, an object. You cannot just swab the inside of an engine’s mouth and look at the DNA or cells because they don’t have any.
However, when they are in their mortal form, they choose to have male appearance in order to not stand out and to blend in (I’m probably going to get backlash for this, but it’s just necessary to not raise any suspicion as someone might be suspicious on why out of all the engines on the Skarloey railway, Rusty is the only one without any form of gender, plus the time and everything you get the idea.) he doesn’t mind this, he’s used to it. In recent times He doesn’t see himself having the others refer to him by they/them pronouns as they’ve known him for years and having them suddenly start referring him as a them might make things difficult and hard on the others especially with their age, older people tend to forget things more easily and rusty doesn’t want to keep on correcting them if they mess up and also, Rusty just doesn’t see the point in it at this rate. They’ve been doing this for decades and why change it.
So basically in god form: they/them
Mortal form: he/him
So if you see a post where I refer to rusty as they/ them, they are in their god form. And he/him pronouns are used when he’s in his mortal form.

In my ttte railroad of the dead AU, I headcanon that Rusty is actually a messenger type god sent to Sodor by Lady.
Rusty isn’t his actual name, his engine form is actually a disguise and is capable of moving by himself, but he allows a driver to operate him as not to raise any suspicion.
When he’s on the magic railroad (which is the equivalent of the afterlife for engines and shining time station being the equivalent of Mount Olympus or Asgard in my AU) he has the power to form tracks wherever he goes and adjust the tracks gauge at will allowing him to travel on any gauge of tracks) his job on the magic railroad is maintaining the tracks because even magic railroads need to have well maintained tracks. He can also deliver messages to the mortal world and guard other engines. In short, he is the primary connection between the magic railroad and our world.
Proteus in this AU, is more of a trickster/shapeshifter god. He has sharp wits and is near impossible to catch. Usually, if an engine wants to catch him and use his lucky lamp, they have to rely on their wits to outsmart him, even if an engine is lucky enough to catch him, proteus is not quick to hand his lamp over and will challenge the engine to a game of wits to see if they are truly worthy of the lamp, if the engine looses, they will face dire consequences. Only two known engines are known to have successfully outwitted proteus: Duke, and Thomas.
Duke’s discovery was no accident, Proteus got bored one day and decided to give Duke a chance of having his wish granted. Proteus challenged Duke to a battle of wits to which Duke won and his wish of being found was granted.
Thomas’s story is a bit more shaky as it’s constantly being changed and embellished. But it is safe to assume that Thomas’s cheeky tendencies were able to outsmart proteus.
