Denizen turned away slightly, adjusting his scarf.

“... Vivian Hardwick,” he mumbled after a moment. “I’m only alive because of her choices. The Clockwork Three would have killed me twice over, and that’s before I even got the chance to meet her.”

Did that make sense? Of course he’d technically met her when he was a baby, had lived with her for his first two years, but he didn’t remember any of that.

“Some of her choices were pretty damn terrible, though. Like pretending to be my aunt and avoiding me for a month because she was too much of a coward to own up to what she’d done. She was just going to die and take all her answers with her and leave me her page in the Book of Rust as what? An apology? An explanation?”

He shook his head. He wasn’t angry at her for it anymore--not really, not after everything else that had happened--but he could still feel the ghost of that rage when he thought about it too hard.

“And she didn’t tell anyone about the Clockwork Three, either, so they couldn’t prepare, a-and...”

It had killed D’Aubigny. It nearly killed Jack, and Grey...

Do you know how different things could have been if she had just told us about the Three?

Denizen swallowed.

“She changed the lives of everyone she ever came into contact, in one way or another. That’s just who she was--a force of nature. The great Vivian Hardwick. But... but she was my mom, you know? So I’d like to think I was the one she impacted the most.”

He sniffed, wiping at his un-covered eye.

“And I’m glad I got to know her, even if it was only for a little bit...”
