Guitar Overdrive Pedal Shootout: Electro-Harmonix East River Drive Review
Guitar Overdrive Pedal Shootout: Electro-Harmonix East River Drive Review
Part 2 of a Guitar Overdrive Pedal Shootout series. Review of the Electro-Harmonix East River Drive guitar overdrive pedal. Bargain JRC4558 chip Ibanez Tubescreamer Clone? Moving on from my previous attempt at a standalone overdrive, the Joyo Ultimate Drive, this was it. Tubescreamer time! Never having owned a tubscreamer in the past, I plumped for the very reasonable Electro-Harmonix East…

The Pedalboard: July 2022 edition. HAD to get this thing locked down at least temporarily, as I have a few shows coming up. The board continues to utilize effects that I’ve had on hand for ages — but for this incarnation, it’s actually a really unusual arrangement that centers around an early (pre-production, I believe?) @lovepedalcustomeffects Purple Plexi that i had sitting around in a box. No graphics or logos on that thing, but a monster of a pedal - to the degree that it can be a bit difficult to tame. Unity gain/volume on that thing is with the volume knob at about 1/16th of its throw - suuuper sensitive. But … sounds amazing. The @ehx Signal Pad is a new experiment, also semi-related to the Purple Plexi - it gets me basically the equivalent of guitar volume knob rolloff, but in pedal form for consistency in said rolloff one time to the next. The @wamplerpedals Ego Compressor and Faux Spring Reverb have been mainstays for a while now and remain, as does the @madprofessoramp hand-wired Deep Blue Delay, the @lovepedalcustomeffects Stir of Echoes, and the @tcelectronic PolyTune 2. Also playing around with a @neunaberaudio Seraphim and Ammoon looper - there’s no song in the set (yet) that really calls for these so we’ll see if they stick around. And … after tonight’s practice, still not sure about the @officialibanezguitars Tube Screamer - it’s one of the first pedals I ever bought and I want to love it purely for nostalgia’s sake, but I found it wasn’t quite adding enough “oomph” for solos tonight. Think I’m going to try squeezing in a @fender Santa Ana Overdrive next and see how that fares. That will in turn lead to The Pedalboard: August 2022 edition. 😂 #fender #lovepedal #lovepedalcustomeffects #wampler #wamplerpedals #madprofessor #madprofessorpedals #tcelectronic #tcelectronics #neunaber #neunaberaudio #ammoon #ammoonlooper #ibanezts9 #tubescreamer (at Scottsdale, Arizona) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cga8iyiOLYD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Guitar and Bass DI Shootout notes!
Put this together to shootout Direct Input options for recording guitar and bass, as well as get better with my critical listening while getting  acquainted with my new interface. I might be making mountains out of molehills, I might be making strides in my audio engineering and songwriting journey- either way I have way too much time on my hands.
Hardware;
RME Babyface Pro FS Audio Interface
Radial Stereo PROD2 Direct Input Box
JHS Pedals Buffered Splitter V1 Signal Splitter Pedal
Land Devices PRE Guitar Preamp Pedal
TECH 21 SANSAMP Bass Driver DI Bass Preamp Pedal
Mogami GOLD Guitar Cable
Lava Cables Solderless Patch Cables
Gibson ES-335 Electric Guitar with stock pickups
Fender Jazz Bass with Seymour Duncan “Quarter Pounder” pickups
Guitar Center retail store picks (lol)
Software;
Logic Pro X digital audio workstation
Logic Pro X stock Limiter (+3dB on Master Bus)
Drums-
Native Instruments KONTAKT virtual instrument host
RoomSound Jay Maas drum library
Bass/Guitar-
FabFilter EQ3 equalizer plugin
STL Tones Howard Benson guitar and bass amp simulator (w/CLA Expansion)
Logic Pro X stock Compressor plugin
Logic Pro X stock Single-Band EQ plugin
I aimed to make a simple verse at 150 tempo in D minor with a low down bass pattern, mute-canceling strumming rhythm guitar part, and bouncing lead guitar melody in my arrangement at the end which these sections and parts cumulate to at the end of this demonstration. I imagine it as a lead into a driving chorus where a future vocal line can begin to wail out after a chilled-out verse- as my inspirations in songwriting originate from Nirvana and independent bands of the modern day. Using the STL Tones Howard Benson Plugin, I sought out a lightly driven Ampeg style amp for the bass tone, a Tubescreamer-fronted Vox AC30 style amp for rhythm guitars, and a pushed Fender Tweed style amp for the lead guitars. Only modifications were using the plugins’ internal reverb and delay sparingly, and added the aforementioned Single-Band EQ plugin for a subtle high shelf on the Lead Guitar.That’s it- no parallel processing, aux sends, or anything funny with the mixing. Nothing too fun until I can determine which method to record my Direct Input Guitars.
Audio Timeline - Total Length 3:44
Three routing methods described as;
RME Direct Input - RME DI
Radial DI Box into RME XLR Input - DI box
Preamp into RME 1/4th” Input (Sansamp for Bass, Land Devices PRE for Guitars) - PRE
Section 1 - 8 Bars testing
Three 8 bar instances of the riff, with 3 stages of testing (with drums, no drums, no plugins) - 0:06-2:04
Part I
Drums, Bass, Rhythm Guitars, and Lead Guitars - 0:06-0:44
RME DI - 0:06
DI box - 0:19
PRE - 0:33
Part II
Bass, Rhythm Guitars, and Lead Guitars(w/EQ+Amp Sim) - 0:44-1:26
RME DI - 0:48
DI box - 1:00
PRE - 1:13
Part III
Bass, Rhythm Guitars, and Lead Guitars(No Plugins) - 1:26-2:04
RME DI - 1:26
DI box - 1:39
PRE - 1:52
Section 2 - 4 Bar testing
4 bars of each DI, followed by 4 bars with added EQ and Amp Simulation - 2:04-2:24
Bass (DI, then EQ+Amp Sim);
RME DI - 2:04
DI box - 2:11
PRE - 2:17
Rhythm Guitar (DI, then EQ+Amp Sim);
RME DI - 2:24
DI box - 2:30
PRE - 2:36
Lead Guitar (DI, then EQ+Amp Sim);
RME DI - 2:43
DI box - 2:49
PRE - 2:56
Section 3 - Which did I prefer? 35 Second Demo 3:05-end
Now, time for my favorite. I’d like you to guess which one my favorite is of the three routing methods with a 35ish second arrangement I made for this test. I used the same DI method for Bass, Rhythm Guitars, and Lead Guitars in this final example. I thought it sounded nice for what it was while not going deep into processing to keep the integrity of direct signals and keeping this test close to its roots, how a DIY musician approaches songwriting at the first step- plugging in and playing your instrument with minimal nor no outboard processing, other than maybe your favorite preamp pedal.

hey, i was wondering if you had any advice about tube screamers. I know jonny has used them in the past, but I was wondering if they'd do a good job at getting a sound close to his Shredmaster Marshall tone. From what I've seen/heard, they sound pretty similar wouldn't you say? would it also work to help get some of the smile distortion tones (think heavy thin thing chorus riff tone?)
A Tubescreamer is probably the last dirt pedal I’d pick for Shredmaster tones. For one, the Tubescreamer uses symmetrical soft clipping, with a gentle onset and a very smooth sound. The Shredmaster uses hard clipping, which gives a much sharper sound. Turn up the gain and they may start to sound similar, but they feel very different to play. As for frequency response, the Tubescreamer has a distinctive “nose”, with cut lows, focused mids, and sharply cut highs. The Shredmaster also has sharply cut highs, but it has way more low frequencies (unless the bass knob is near zero). And the Shredmaster is also capable of some heavily scooped sounds thanks to the dramatic contour knob.

Jonny's second pedalboard in 2006. The BOSS LS2 selects between two outputs. The first output feeds the Boss SD1 -> Boss RV3 -> Akai Headrush -> Vox AC30. The second output feeds the Marshall Shredmaster -> Boss FV300 -> Fender EightyFive. Jonny set the gain on his AC30 amplifier to be fairly clean, then used the volume boost from his SD1 to push the tube amp into overdrive. In contrast, the solid-state Fender Eighty-Five amplifier is totally clean, which is the reason the Shredmaster sounds so punchy with it.
While Jonny has never used a Proco Rat, there’s a good reason that so many people think he did: on certain settings, it does sound similar to Jonny’s Shredmaster settings. It definitely lacks the bass of Jonny’s Shredmaster setting, but it’s still a lot closer than a Tubescreamer. That’s because the Rat also uses hard clipping, giving a more aggressive “distortion” sound in contrast to the softer “overdrive” of the Tubescreamer. You could easily mod a Rat to cut less bass pre-clipping, but it would result in a bloated sound. Boosting the bass post-clipping would sound better, but unfortunately it’s a lot more complicated.
Tumblr media
The frequency response of a stock Proco Rat, showing the tone control at various positions (ElectroSmash).
For recent The Smile shows, Jonny has used his old Boss SD1 overdrive pedal for all his distorted guitar sounds (so just on Thin Thing and The Opposite). The SD1 is nearly identical to a Tubescreamer, as both are slight variations on the older Boss OD1 circuit, adding a tone control. But the SD1 has asymmetrical soft clipping, in contrast to the Tubescreamer’s symmetrical soft clipping. The difference is noticeable with a clean amp, but with a distorted amp they sound extremely similar. Luckily, there are plenty of Tubescreamer clones available with multiple clipping options (like the EQD Plumes), so you can get the best of both worlds. And if you want to try your hand at mods, it’s easily to buy a cheap used SD1 and add a switch for multiple clipping options.
If you want something that falls between Shredmaster and Tubescreamer, the best option would probably be a Boss OD3. Jonny has used that pedal consistently since 2006, and it’s perhaps best heard on the album version of Identikit. Jonny also used it for The Smile’s Glastonbury live stream. Like the Shredmaster, the OD3 cuts bass pre-clipping then adds it back post-clipping, so the pedal sounds full but not bloated (as would be the case with lots of bass pre-clipping). It also has more gain and a Marshally voicing, bringing even closer to a Shredmaster. However, the OD3 uses a fairly uncommon multi-stage discrete-opamp design, which gives it a very dynamic clipping response. It definitely feels more like an overdrive, or even an amp. It’s definitely more amp-like than the Shredmaster.

A photo of Thom and Jonny soundchecking There There at San Diego's Bayside in late-June, 2006 (deadairspace). This is from a brief period when Jonny had both a Boss SD1 and a Boss OD3 on his pedalboard. He acquired the OD3 only a few weeks earlier, in the midst of that US tour. When Radiohead next toured in 2008, Jonny was only using the OD3. He hasn't used an SD1 at a Radiohead show since then.

December 29, 2019: Three years ago today, Corduroy Institute convened to record our last session of the 2010s. We followed the methodology of using a random number generator to give us two discs from our collection that could serve as a guideline for our improvisation. The albums it selected were compilations by The Temptations and Chrome.
Tumblr media
Corduroy 58 began a kick and snare pattern from the Arturia Minibrute plus a dose of fuzz bass courtesy of the Deluxe Bass Big Muff Pi on the Bass VI. The high harmonic content of this ostensibly rhythmic layer would require extensive equalization and filtering later on when the piece was eventually mixed.
Our journal notes then indicate that the melodic layer featured a Telecaster sent "through a combo of pedals mediated by [S.A. Morin's] Triparallel Mixer." Visual evidence from from the session indicates that we may have employed the Pigtronix Philosopher King, the Ibanez Tubescreamer, the EHX Superego Plus, the EHX Attack Decay, the Boss FB-2 feedback booster, and the NUX Atlantic reverb/delay. This claim is wholly speculatory as it was deduced from the pedals which are shown to be engaged within our photographic memories.
Tumblr media
The melodic layer also entailed the use of the Casio AZ-1 keytar to control the Korg Volca FM. This frequency modulation synthesizer's output was augmented by the effects of the bass pedalboard, most notably a discreet amount of distortion. This performance remains the only instance in which we have ever used the keytar controller.
Tumblr media
Corduroy 58 would remain dormant until S.A. Morin added three sets of vocals on May 10, 2020. Live drum pad overdubs and W. Ruiz vocals were added in January 16, 2021. This piece would eventually be dubbed "A Suburban Purity," currently available on our album Eight/Chance/Meetings.

This is getting out of hand. Now there are two of them!
I found a well priced Rockbass infinity to feed my addiction add to my rapidly growing stable of instruments. She’s a sweet little thing. Comfy, very light, and it plays incredibly well, especially compared to the J which feels like strapping a coffee table across your tits.
Also coming soon to be added to the collection is the bits to build myself a Tubescreamer, which I’ll no doubt share here. Basses and TS9s are a match made in heaven IMO.
