The Biden administration and Speaker McCarthy managed to hash out a budget deal over the weekend, but it still has to pass congress and both sides aren't particularly pleased with it. The deal suspends the debt limit for two years, but as a concession there have to be cuts in all discretionary, nondefense spending. This includes the IRS, the budget of which Biden wanted to increase to go after wealthy taxpayers who aren't paying. It also adds work requirements for food stamps, releases several billion set aside for COVID, ends the freeze on student loans, and allows the construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline. I'd like to take this opportunity to talk about the budget in general because all this wrangling doesn't really touch on the biggest problem the US is facing. We can divide the budget between mandatory, discretionary, and interest. Interest is about 8% and is payment for all the borrowing. Discretionary is about 30% and is basically add ons that aren't required by law, like wanting to buy more tanks, have some studies on wildlife, or federal funding for public schools. Mandatory holds the biggest chunk at 63%, and that's where the issue is. The US spends almost half of its budget on medicare/medicaid and social security, and it's going to get worse as people age and have less children. For example, my father received about $2500/month in social security, and in the last three years of his life probably burned through $500K of medicare. That's a lot of taxes for just one person. Considering the birth rate is going down, there will be even less people to fill the pot of money required to pay those benefits, and the US will have to borrow even more to cover the difference. There are a lot of ways to solve this--the most obvious is raise the retirement age to 68--but any move is extremely unpopular and neither Republicans nor Democrats want to address it, so they just haggle over the discretionary stuff instead.

In probably the most important election of the year, Turkish President Erdogan won another five-year term. The first round on May 14th was close, so by Turkish law a second round happened last Sunday. However the results remained very close because his popularity sank due to economic issues and the response to the earthquake earlier this year.

Russia has continuously been bombarding Kiev. Yesterday a drone strike hit Moscow, but with only minimal damage.

The Sudanese army suspended its ceasefire talks and fighting is flaring up again.

The Sackler family was granted shielding from current or future civil lawsuits over the opioid crisis in return for $6B. Perdue Pharma is one of the major players in pushing its pain medication and kicking off a massive opioid crisis in the US from the 2000s until today. Perdue was sued to the point of bankruptcy for its role, but its owners the Sacklers were also targeted, and whether they're personally liable or not has been languishing in the courts for years until now.

The Texas legislature voted to impeach its AG, Ken Paxton. He has been accused of securities fraud, bribery, using his office to help friends (he's being impeached for this offense), and stealing a $1000 pen on camera. He entered national news in 2020 when he brought a case to the Supreme Court to ask it to change the swing states from Biden to Trump, which is an insane and completely nonsensical request legally, (note: the following is speculation) and the gossip at the time was he was looking to ingratiate himself to Trump for a presidential pardon because there was no other reasonable explanation for that action.

Since the June 2015 election, Erdoğan has clamped down on the party, arresting tens of thousands of its members, purging its representatives from local government and civil society, and even going so far as to attempt to shut it down altogether in 2021 ...

“Despite this ... the fact that Erdoğa will be forced to fight a run-off for the first time in the 100-year history of the Turkish republic marks serious progress for the opposition. This is a major reality about the AKP.’”

ترک اپوزیشن صدارتی انتخابات جیت سکتی ہے

ترکیہ میں 2023ء میں ایک ساتھ ہونے جا رہے صدارتی اور پارلیمانی انتخابات تاریخ کے اہم ترین انتخابات تصور کئے جا رہے ہیں اور دنیا بھر کی نظریں ابھی سے ان انتخابات کی جانب مرکوز ہیں۔ صدر ایردوان کے لئے یہ انتخابات ماضی کے تمام انتخابات سے یکسر مختلف ہیں اور پہلی بار ان کو اپنے بیس سالہ دور اقتدار میں شدید مشکلات کا سامنا کرنا پڑرہا ہے۔ ترکیہ میں آنے والے زلزلوں اور سیلاب کی تباہ کاریوں نے ان کی مشکلات میں مزید اضافہ کیا ہے جب کہ اپوزیشن اپنے آپ کو اس وقت مسندِ اقتدار پر بیٹھنے کے سہانے خواب کو حقیقت کےروپ میں دیکھ رہی ہے۔ اس بار بھی ترکیہ میں انتخابی صورتِ حال 2002ء کی صورتِ حال سے کافی حد تک مشابہت رکھتی ہے۔ (اگرچہ ابھی انتخابات میں دو ماہ باقی ہیں) اور اس بار بیس سال بعد پہلی بار اپوزیشن کا پلڑا بھاری ہے۔ اگرچہ آق پارٹی بیس سال سے برسر اقتدار ہے اور اسے عوامی حمایت بھی حاصل ہے لیکن وقت کے ساتھ ساتھ اب اس کی حمایت میں کمی آتی جا رہی ہے لیکن اس کے باوجود رائے شماری کے نمایاں ادارے صدر ایردوان کے صدارتی انتخابات بڑی آسانی سے جیتنے سے متعلق سروے پیش گوئی کر رہے ہیں (اس قسم کے سرویز ذاتی رائے کے مطابق آق پارٹی کو نقصان پہنچا سکتے ہیں)۔ 

شاید اس کی وجہ ان کمپنیوں پر بر سراقتدار آق پارٹی کا دبائو ہو سکتا ہے جب کہ عوامی جوش و خروش اور دیگر سرویز کمپنیوں کے سروے سے یہ حقیقت آشکار ہو رہی ہے کہ اپوزیشن جماعتوں پر مبنی ’’ ملت اتحاد ‘‘ پہلے سے بہت مضبوط ہو چکا ہے اور وقت کے ساتھ ساتھ اس کی حمایت میں مسلسل اضافہ ہوتا جا رہا ہے۔ یہ بھی ایک حقیقت ہے کہ صدر ایردوان اس وقت تک ترکیہ کی تاریخ کے طویل عرصہ تک اپنی حمایت کو جاری رکھنے والے یگانہ رہنما ہیں اور یہ بھی ایک حقیقت ہے کہ وہ ترکیہ کو ترقی کی راہ پر گامزن کرنے اور اسے دنیا کے عظیم ممالک کی صف میں شامل کرنے والے واحد ترک رہنما ہیں۔ اس کے باوجود صدر ایردوان کی مقبولیت میں کمی آنے کی سادہ سی وجہ ان کا طویل عرصے برسر اقتدار رہنا اور عوام کا ان سے اُ کتا جانا بھی ہو سکتا ہے تاہم ان کی مقبولیت میں کمی آنے کی سب سے بڑی وجہ ملک میں ناقابلِ برداشت مہنگائی، افراطِ زر اور عوام کی بڑی تعداد کا غربت کی لکیر سے نیچے زندگی بسر کرنے پر مجبور ہونا ہے۔ 

ترکیہ گزشتہ تین برسوں سے شدید افرطِ زر کے طوفان کی لپیٹ میں ہے۔ اگرچہ حکومت نے تنخواہوں میں اضافہ کرتے ہوئے سرکاری ملازمین کی مالی حالت بہتر بنانے کی کوشش تو ضرور کی ہے لیکن تنخواہوں میں اضافے نے جلتی پر تیل کا کام کیا ہے اور دیکھتے ہی دیکھتے مہنگائی آسمان کی بلندیوں کو چھونے لگی اور تنخواہوں میں ہونے والا اضافہ افراطِ زر کی شرح کو بلند کرنے کا باعث بنا۔ حکومت نے انتخابات سے قبل افراطِ زر پر قابو پانے کیلئے بڑی سنجیدگی سے قد م اٹھانا شروع کر دیے ہیں جس سے افراطِ زر کی شرح 55 فیصد تک گرانے میں کچھ حد تک کامیابی بھی حاصل کی ہے لیکن اپوزیشن نے اسے مسترد کرتے ہوئے ان اعدادو شمار کو غلط قرار دیا ہے۔ اپوزیشن، اس مہنگائی اور افراطِ زر کا سہارا لیتے ہوئے صدر ایردوان کے خلاف انتخابی مہم جاری رکھے ہوئے ہے اور عوام کے برسر اقتدار آنے کی صورت میں افرطِ زر کو سنگل ڈی جٹ میں لانے کی یقین دہانی کروا رہی ہے جس کے نتیجے میں اپوزیشن کے اتحاد کی حمایت میں مسلسل اضافہ ہوتا جا رہا ہے۔

ترکیہ کی تاریخ میں صدر ایردوان پہلے رہنما ہیں جو مسلسل بیس سال سے تمام انتخابات جیتنے کا ریکارڈ قائم کر چکے ہیں اوراب ان مشکل حالات سے نکلنے اور صدارتی انتخابات میں یقینی کامیابی حاصل کرنے کے لئے اپنے نئے پلان پر عمل درآمد کا آغاز کر چکے ہیں۔ مختلف ذرائع سے حاصل کردہ معلومات کے مطابق صدر ایردوان نے اپوزیشن کے اتحاد کو شکست سے دوچار کرنے کے لئے اپوزیشن جماعتوں ہی میں سے’’ مملکت پارٹی ‘‘ ( جس کے رہنما اپوزیشن کی سب سے بڑی جماعت CHP سے علیحدگی اختیار کرتے ہوئے ’’ مملکت پارٹی ‘‘ تشکیل دے چکے ہیں ) کے چیئرمین محرم انجے کے لئے صدارتی امیدوار بننے کی راہ ہموار کر چکے ہیں (اپوزیشن نے اسے ایردوان کی ناکام چال قرار دیا ہے ) تاکہ صدارتی انتخابات کے پہلے ہی رائونڈ میں اپوزیشن کے درمیان پھوٹ ڈلوا کر اور ان کے ووٹ تقسیم کرواتے ہوئے شکست سے دوچار کیا جا سکے اور دوسرے مرحلے کے انتخابات سے بچا جاسکے۔ یہ ایک حقیقت ہے کہ ایردوان انتخابات جیتنے اور شکست کو گلے لگانے کی بجائے آخری وقت تک جنگ جاری رکھتے ہوئے شکست کو فتح میں تبدیل کرنے کے فن کے ماہرکے طورپر جانے جاتے ہیں۔

صدارتی انتخابات کے علاوہ پارلیمانی انتخابات بھی ترکیہ کے لئے بڑی اہمیت کے حامل ہیں، اگر صدر ایردوان صدارتی انتخابات جیت بھی لیتے ہیں تو اس بار ان کے’’جمہور اتحاد‘‘ کو پارلیمنٹ میں پہلے جیسی برتری حاصل نہیں ہو سکے گی کیونکہ پارلیمانی انتخابات کے لئے اپوزیشن نے پاکستان کی جماعتوں کے اتحاد کا طریقۂ کار اپناتے ہوئے ، صدر ایردوان کے ’’ جمہور اتحاد‘‘ کے مقابلے میں الگ الگ امیدواروں کی بجائے ملت اتحاد کے مشترکہ امیدوار کھڑے کرتے ہوئے کامیابی کی راہ ہموار کرنے کا فیصلہ کیا ہے۔ اس طریقۂ کار سے اپوزیشن کے ’’ ملت اتحاد ‘‘ کو ’’ جمہور اتحاد‘‘ سے زیادہ نشستیں حاصل ہونے کے قوی امکانات ہیں۔
