“Two of these are women.”
Father figures also count
“Some of these doesn’t have their own kids”
See point 1
“Why is there only a few characters from the same franchise going against each other but sometimes they aren’t”
Because I only recognized fire emblem, Pokémon, and JJBA at first.
“Aus doesn’t count”
As a previous undertale fan. I could care less. And I am not replacing Tim with BAMSE.
“Replace x with Bamse”
Sorry but. Findus and Skalman have already won. 3 times are a bit too much for us sweds.
“911 is copaganda”
You see Brooklyn 911 (picked by wheel) and you go against fireback mountain. Shame on you anon.
“Dad council these aren’t all random”
Yeah but Neon J vs Wubbox = chaos
Code of conduct

Meta on "propaganda reblogs". This post is Section 5.
1) Introduction: why I am, for once, waving my candy-washing soap 2) Anatomy of a propaganda reblog, Part 1: the midnight timestamp 3) Anatomy of a propaganda reblog, Part 2: the ultrashort response 4) Beyond the propaganda: the significance (and tragedy) of events remembered by these posts 5) Conclusion: The Li Jiaqi Paradox
(Below the cut — Section 5: Conclusion: The Li Jiaqi Paradox)
While I enjoy researching and writing up these metas, I understand they're probably depressing to read.
Thank you for sticking with them, with me, for so long.
Despite what it may seem, I, too, wish that fandom can be apolitical. I, too, wish that I can play with anything, everything I want.
But, my understanding has been ... a fandom of Chinese stars doesn't allow that.
Have you heard of The Li Jiaqi Paradox?
Li Jiaqi 李 佳琦 was a top Chinese influencer, a leading online salesman with a legendary record of selling RMB 1.7 billion worth of products during a 12-hour streaming section. His Weibo has over 30 million followers (for comparison: Gg: 31 million; Dd: 40 million).
His glorious days ended, nonetheless, on June 3rd, 2022. During a live stream session, he was to promote oreo cookies and ice cream cake. His aid entered the scene with a tank made of both:
Tumblr media
Those who're familiar with the 1989 June 4th Tiananmen Square Massacre may know why a tank was about the most politically sensitive object one can show on June 3rd. For those who're not familiar, here's a world-famous photo from June 4th:
Tumblr media
A photo from the famous footage of "Tank Man", the nickname given to a courageous Chinese man who, alone with nothing but grocery bags in his hands, attempted to stop the advance of a file of tanks into Beijing on June 5th, 1989. His identity and survival were never confirmed. This is among the most censored image on the Chinese internet.
Li's broadcast stopped abruptly after the tank appeared. The explanation given later was "technical issues". Li hasn't appeared in another broadcast again.
The irony of the situation is: born in 1992, Li wasn't supposed to know anything about the 1989 June 4th incident at all. The censorship on June 4th has remained among the strictest of that of all politically-sensitive issues in China. That Li didn't know about June 4th actually meant he had been a good citizen; that he hadn't scaled the Firewall, hadn't perused "anti-revolutionary" material, looked at things he shouldn't have looked at.
Li was a-political, in a way that should've pleased his government.
And yet, it's precisely this innocent, this state-pleasing apolitical-ness of his that led to his downfall, that led to his not knowing a tank was a political red line, especially on the evening of June 3rd. The Li Jiaqi Paradox 李佳琦悖論, whispered by sympathetic Chinese netizens, was about this unsolvable dilemma: to be apolitical in China, one has to be so political that they know of every single political red line to avoid.
This paradox may explain, in a nutshell, why I'm making Chinese politics a learning journey for myself, in parallel with my turtlish adventures. I believe my ability to maintain Gg's and Dd's a-politicalness as a turtle is, to a certain extent, dependent on my awareness of the political red lines in their world, of the unspoken rules surrounding their political engagement.
Such as, how they appropriately respond to the state media's propaganda posts.
My engagement in Chinese politics isn't about doing what the Chinese government wants. I'd be the first to say: Chinese censorship rules do not apply to i-fans. Even supertopic rules do not apply to i-fans.
It's just that, I feel a need to exercise a ... courtesy, I'd call it, if responsibility is too strong a word, to avoid placing any Chinese stars, regardless of my (dis)liking of them, on a political red line. They've taken great care to avoid these lines, as evidenced by the propaganda reblogs (and everything else they do, really). The least I can do is to respect, and reciprocate the care they've put into them.
Hong Kong's and Taiwan's democracy movements are China's political red lines. Same as almost anything about Japan (but especially, especially World War II), about the United States...
Lines that are probably more like ribbons after today. Wide, thick ribbons waiting for some poor Chinese to trip on.
This means, while I can make my political stance clear — and I have — I strive to not project it on any Chinese stars. No matter how much I wish they think in more similar ways as I do.
This means, I may roll my eyes hard at ... for example, the Chinese propaganda about the Hong Kong Handover; I may complain about it, vocally, but I never imply the stars participating in the propaganda had even a trace of unwillingness in performing it.
This means, I refrain from portraying the same stars as regarding any piece of propaganda — particularly those involving red line topics — as something serving more personal, and/or less patriotic, purposes.
As I confessed in Section 1, my wish for writing this meta is to appeal to fellow fans to consider doing the same, with the last point.
As turtles, we have a treasure trove of fun things, a Honeyduke-on-steroid's worth of candies. I think, we'll be okay without playing with a post about a World War. We'll be okay without playing with a post crafted with, possibly, more than a tinge of anxiety, given the rough political waters so many Chinese are navigating in right now.
When a mainland Chinese — any mainland Chinese — reblogs a propaganda post, I tell myself, they're making a statement of loyalty towards their government. Nothing less. Nothing more.
Then, I move on. Is it difficult to watch my favourite stars doing this, dancing perenially on a field of political landmines? Yes, of course. And it hurts too, I admit, to have to be reminded, like today, that the more I insist my views and the views of my favourite stars are at significant odds with each other, the safer, the better it probably is.
But I chose to be here, right?
So, no complaints. 😊
All right, that's way too much of me on the soapbox today (sorry). Let me jump off and finish this meta series by wrapping up Li Jiaqi's story. Because in it lies, perhaps, one more paradox, one more irony —
Li's fans, many of them young and equally innocent and state-pleasing, asked over the days after the ice-cream-oreo tank incident what had happened to their favourite influencer. Where has Jiaqi vanished off to? I've been waiting for him to recommend my next lipstick! Sell me the lipstick at the lowest price! The older fans hinted in all sorts of ways without tripping the censorship filter. They talked in emojis and numbers; they told the young to scale the Firewall; they referred to the resolution passed by the Chinese congress after the incident ...
In the end, Li and the ice-cream-oreo tank accomplished what the Chinese government has, for so long, tried so hard to prevent from happening, what it could still have prevented from happening if it had not cut Li's broadcast short, if it had just let an ice-cream tank have its minutes of limelight —
Li and the ice-cream-oreo tank successfully taught thousands of young Chinese what had happened on the night of June 4th, 1989, in Tiananmen Square.
youtube
Nancy Pelosi (with two congressmen) paying respects to the victims of the June 4th Massacre in Tiananmen Square, 1991. It was an incident many Hong Kongers got to know her from, and remembered her for. Later, she helped create a pathway to U.S. citizenship for Chinese students fleeing political persecution, students who had participated in the political movement leading to the massacre.

Nope, not that turtle anon. Wasn't aware there was already one. Sorry, if there was any confusion.
I absolutely get the whole "staying optimistic while still having a healthy dose of scepticism" approach. That's very much how I tend to go about these things too.
I've been pretty much playing tug of war with spn since the first time it aired.
Because here's the thing: It's absolutely a show I would enjoy. I mean for fucks sake, I've never watched it and I'm attached. The characters absolutely get to me. At this point I could probably recite you all plot points and also tell you which season (more often than I'd probably like to admit) even down to the episode. I could recite lines, I read a word that could be related to the show and immediately think of it, I read/hear a totally unrelated thing and go "that's so [insert spn character here]". So I think it's fair to say, that I very much do have the spn brainworms.
Also having been a depressed, anxious and (didn't know yet) queer teenager on the internet, spn was kinda hard to avoid. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There's just always been different reasons over the years that ultimately made me decide not to actually watch it. Not even necessarily negative reasons. Just stuff.
And hey, I very much get to enjoy it here, with a bunch of added nuances from amazing people, with amazing ideas. :)
Plus there's always fanfics.
I guess I have to tell you this now: You and @regardingjenmish were the first two blogs I followed after I created this blog. Kind of on accident? I mean not really but also yes. I just kept scrolling through your blogs and then accidentally hit follow and basically went: "Eh, might as well."
(And yes, this indeed happend twice)
(Ok so is there 🕷️ anon? If not just file me away under 🕷️ anon. Obviously don't want to confuse anyone. :))
it's so funny because even before i started the show, i kind of just knew all the major plot points/destiel moments because i watched a bunch of vids and read a lot of meta after thee november 5th. normally i don't like spoiling myself but in this case, i already knew how it ended so fuck it hgdhgfd and so i didn't care about knowing all these things before i got to them in the show. truly an unparalleled media experience etc etc.
i gotta say though, as a non-watcher, are you more a fan of AU's or canon compliant fics? and which are your faves? (if you wanna share, that is)

Weekend Top Ten #517
Top Ten Favourite BBC Programmes
Ah, the good old BBC. And I’m not just saying that because I work for them every now and again. Really, they are one of the few true British institutions, and a real reason to feel pride in this country and its accomplishments. I bristle at notions of nationalism – why should we celebrate a geographic area we accidentally happened to be born within? – but there are aspects of British life and history that are genuinely world-class (the NHS, William Shakespeare, Scottish swearwords) and the BBC is absolutely up there.
For all my adult life, it seems, the BBC has been under attack from, well, arseholes. There’s no other way to put it; these are bad-faith actors using false arguments to attack the BBC for nefarious reasons. Look, I’m not happy with everything they do; I’m less bothered, in truth, by any right-wing bias in some of their news shows shows, and more by their both-sides what-aboutery which gives us false equivalences between, say, actual trans people and bigots. But the BBC is huge; I don’t expect it all to be about me, or for me. That’s daft. No, on the whole, the BBC is fantastic. From news (and their live reporting is still world-class) to drama, comedy, documentary and science programmes, and their absolutely superlative children’s and education content. And that’s just me talking about their television programmes; they have a vast radio network, websites, and live events. They’ve made films and books and all sorts. Christ, I pay more for my Netflix subscription than my TV licence, and I think we can all agree that Iron Fist was a bit crap.
Anyway, I like the BBC and I wanted to celebrate it, so today we’re looking at my favourite BBC programmes. I’ve tried – to the best of my knowledge – stick to BBC-produced programmes, rather than stuff they bought or imported; hence some of the BBC stalwarts of my youth, from Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles or Around the World with Willy Fogg on CBBC, to the likes of Due South, Lois and Clark, The X-Files, or even Star Trek: The Next Generation. So these are BBC programmes from throughout my life – and a lot of them are more-or-less from my childhood, to be honest – that I’ve loved. Whatever else happens, I’ll always be eternally grateful for these shows existing, and that’s because of the BBC.
Y’know, now I think about it, the majority of “things” – IPs, franchises, stories, whatever you want to call it – were on the BBC. If I break down the big things that really hit me hard, you’ve got Transformers, Garfield, and Ghostbusters on ITV, but stuff like Red Dwarf, X-Files, Turtles, Doctor Who… these were BBC joints. And even then, there’s a strong argument that I loved the Transformers comic, the Garfield strips, and the Ghostbusters movies more than their shows. Yeah, okay, as I got older I gravitated to the edgier Channel 4 (although BBC2 held its own!) but even though I loved Father Ted and Spacedand Friends and whatnot, really I feel like I grew up on the BBC. When I think of British TV, that’s what I think of; the BBC. There’s the BBC and everyone else. And I just feel so grateful for them.
Anyway. My favourite BBC shows. Here ya go.
Tumblr media
Doctor Who(1963-current): it’s probably true that I wasn’t a megafan until the 2005 reboot, but I did used to really enjoy Sylvester McCoy’s tenure (I even had the toys!). It was when Russell T. Davies took over that I really fell in love; the combination of fast-paced adventure, wacky sci-fi, and a whole lot of heart. The bonkers, balls-out, meta-fictional craziness that reached its peak in the Steven Moffat years is absolutely my jam. I love it to bits.
Red Dwarf (1988-1999): I think I pretty much fell for Red Dwarf right from the start; I even have vague memories of watching it back in ’88. That golden age – series three through five, I’d say – was incredibly, must-watch, week-by-week viewing. Hilarious, but also frequently really good sci-fi, with some mind-bending concepts.
The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer/Shooting Stars (1993-2011): I’ve cheekily included both these classic Vic and Bob shows, because I couldn’t quite draw a line between them. But their absolutely bonkers, batshit, surreal comedy was – and is – so incredible. I’m not sure I’ve seen anything quite as funny.
Blackadder (1983-1989): a combination of pitch-perfect performance and sublime writing, the various Blackadder series (and truth be told I’m not sure I’ve ever seen the first one) are a phenomenon. They click together like a work of literary genius, as if it was some kind of… cunning plan.
Sherlock (2010-2017):speaking of clockwork scripts… okay, it kind of fell apart a little bit towards the end, but the first couple of series were exemplary, er, examples of fiendishly complex whodunnits executed with precision. A tremendous cast, iconic performances for the ages, really helped seal the deal.
QI (2003-current):it’s not all comedy and drama! Although QI is very funny. But it’s a delightfully clever quiz show that revels in its delightful cleverness. A show that rewards that cleverness, it feels almost like watching a dozen mini documentaries each episode. Plus, yes, very funny, and a tremendous roster of hosts and guests.
Wonders of the Solar System(2010): the BBC is a powerhouse for documentaries and stuff, and this is probably my favourite. Brian Cox is a terrific host to explore complicated topics of physics and geology, rendering the fantastical in simple, straightforward terms. Mind-blowing stuff; educational, sure, but also genuinely wondrous.
The Private Life of Plants (1995):to pick on David Attenborough documentary is a fool’s errand, but I’ve plumped for this one over the more majestic likes of Planet Earth because I fell in love with it as a teen. Using cutting-edge technology to show plants growing and moving, it really opened my eyes to the natural world. But this could have been one of a dozen shows.
Hey Duggee (2014-current): where would we be without Children’s BBC? From the shows I watched as a kid to ones I actually worked on, it’s a monument. Duggee is amazing because, at a time filled with ropey CG, its minimalist aesthetic was gorgeous, but its humour and heart and great tunes were even better. Filled with genuinely funny gags – some for kids, some for parents – as well as bench of great characters as deep as The Simpsons’, it’s probably, on balance, the greatest kids’ show of all time.
The Young Ones (1982-1984): I struggled a little bit with how to fill out this roster, as there are so many shows, and I didn’t want to just pick something I liked as a kid. But the collective works of Rick Mayall and Adrian Edmondson are so great that I had to include this, my entry point, and a delightfully surreal slice of comedy gold. So many highlights – the dancing carrot, the nuke, the bath, Vivian losing his head – but it’s wild to look at it now, these children getting together and making this anarchic comedy. Blew me away as a kid, impresses me even now.
God, so many things I didn’t include. Maid Marian, French and Saunders, The Day Today… Monty Python! The last one I skipped because, really, as iconic as it is, I fell in love with them through their movies and songs first, and I reckon if I went back, I’ve only seen the episodes in dribs and drabs. One of the funniest, cleverest, and most influential groups of all time, but as a BBC programme, it didn’t quite register as much. Maybe I’m splitting hairs. Anyway: the BBC. Good, eh?

Tired: Rise!Splinter is a neglectful and awful father who doesn’t care about his kids >:(
Wired: Rise!Splinter’s negligence comes from a place of deep trauma that he’s carried with him his whole life – losing his mother, having been betrayed by the love of is life, being imprisoned and forced to fight for his life, used as an experiment and subsequently being mutated and losing his whole identity as a person – and while it certainly doesn’t excuse his behavior, there is no doubt that this man loves his sons fiercely despite his own shortcomings and perhaps it is exactly that love and care that causes him to keep his children at arms length in hopes to spare them his family’s cursed legacy that grooms them into martyrs and are thus destined to die young, a sacrifice for the greater good that Splinter is never willing to make even if it means forfeiting the world to the Shredder. Splinter’s journey of fatherhood began by being completely unprepared as a fresh young single father of four young children that depend on him to survive and there is no surprise he’s hit almost every bump there possibly is when raising a child but never in his life has Splinter ever blamed or resented his children in any way – he is not perfect and he’s aware and he tries to do better all because he loves his kids this fucking much bc despite all the shit he’s been through, those kids made him realize that he can try again. to dismiss him as an awful father is a gross mischaracterization of a deeply traumatized man of color who evidently tried his fucking hardest not to pass on the hurt onto his own children while grappling with his own demons and the crushing destiny of his family’s blood line that took away his mother.

Hello! The matches are ready! They were randomized, but like three of them were edited as they were way too unfair (a character from a really famous fandom vs a character from a fandom whose latest post was like two months ago)
The left side will be posted on April 15 at 6 pm GMT!
