I know that's like the least important thing right now, and he had plenty to do in New Orleans with all the usual shit going on, but I still wish we got to see that Klaus knew about Caroline's mom and that he sent her flowers or something, to show he cared. because I know he would have, if he knew

You know I don’t even like “redeeming villains” tropes that much cause shows like TVD don’t even do it right. Their idea of redeeming a bad guy is so gross. It’s just having the other characters act dumb and excuse their actions. Like Elena and later Bonnie and Caroline excusing and downplaying Damon or just downright not even acknowledging shit he did (like in S5 how Damon kidnapping Jer was literally never acknowledged by Elena). And Caroline romanticizing Klaus. I know the fandom tries to act like she didn’t but she did. Which is why after he stabbed her and poisoned her with his werewolf venom she goes “I know you’re in love with me and anyone capable of love is capable of saving.” And Damon gets told “you feel remorse cause you made pancakes in memory of the pregnant woman you murdered so there’s hope for you.” So it’s just all so icky the way the narrative and characters are written so the audience could be tricked into thinking this is “redemption”.
But with Kai the redemption arc was the only time they were doing it right.
He pays actual consequences for his actions.
Nobody excuses or downplays his behavior.
People get even with him (i.e Jo and Bonnie trapping him in 1994/1903 prisons.)
After the merge he was genuinely feeling bad about the trauma he caused Jo and Bonnie. They literally dedicated multiple episodes to highlighting Kai’s remorse and feelings (6x13, 6x15, 6x16, 6x17). Btw those were Kai’s feelings not Luke. Luke didn’t grow up with Jo and didn’t care about Bonnie. And those were the two people Kai’s feelings centered around. Had Kai been obsessed with chasing Liv and getting her to forgive him for trying to kill her when she was toddler then I’d maybe agree that that’s Luke’s emotions taking over. But Kai wrote a letter to Jo in 6x13.
So it’s just so annoying that the one villain redemption arc they were doing right is the one they decided to toss.
🙄😒
So much this! The one time they're writing the redemption properly, that's when they decide that they want to make an example.
And I completely agree about Luke and it annoys me so much when people attribute Kai's feelings to Luke. Kai got empathy, not Luke's personality. Luke did not care about Bonnie, ffs. He made Liv stop the spell to bring people from the Other Side. He might feel sad about Bonnie's attempt to take her life but he would never risk his life and the life of the coven to save her.

Well, welcome to the world of awkward sympathies. That's why you have to be prepared with your responses. I recommend at least three. Your responses will be different for each category of people in your life: friends of circumstance, casual acquaintances, loved ones.
