Which butterfly would you assign to our dear friend Toodles?? I'm partial to the red-bodied swallowtail myself 👀 [free-n-wild!]

@free-n-wild Ohhhhh Toodles, now this is an interesting request! He deserve a butterfly just as edgy as he is! In response to my WK Assignment Post!

I looked up the butterfly you mentioned (I love swallowtails so much, omg), and I completely agree! This is an absolutely stunning creatures, and the butterfly matches him so well!

See below the cut for the butterfly and some fun facts! Be warned, animal collection, which includes animal death is mentioned, but this butterfly is a fighter!

The Red-Bodied Swallowtail (Ruby Swallowtail) or Pachliopta polydorus!

A few fascinating facts about this butterfly!

1)The fact that stuck out to me the most, and made me think of Toodles, is that these butterflies are not easily defeated when collectors attempt to kill and mount them. The practices that most collectors use to claim the lives of these beautiful creatures only serves to stun the Red-Bodied Swallowtail. Kind of like how Toodles cannot be “killed” by the show, he might have only been in one episode, but he keeps coming back time and time again in the fandom! He and this butterfly will not go down without a fight!

2)The Red-Bodied Swallowtail also has developed other protective measures to ensure survival. The buttery has adopted a slow, erratic flight pattern which makes predators take notice. Once the predators observe this unusual flight pattern they then see the unusual color and markings of this butterfly, particularly the bright red coloration, which provide the predators with sufficient information to tell them to stay away! This potential meal could make them sick or worse! Like Toodles, who looks so much like the charming green brother, this butterfly manages to trick and deceive others with it’s looks.

This is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever found. Half of this deer’s face was partially mummified by direct exposure to the sun, and the other half was perfectly cleaned to the bone. He looks mythical, like some sort of death spirit. I cherish him dearly, he’s all cleaned up at home with me now (photos from last fall)

It took… a lot of strength to get all that mummified skin off. And there were so many maggots. I tried my very best not to hurt any of them in the process, I love those guys.

Despite being in the vulture culture community for a long time- I ain’t ever actually caped a deer before. Mostly because roadkill is my main source of supply, and I didn’t get a freezer until a few years ago.

Imagine my surprise when my mom called me up saying there was a deceased doe in our neighborhood.

Anyways, the entire process of getting this little lady preserved involved lots of blood, sweat, and tears. Mainly blood though. Many of her insides have been preserved, her pelt tanned(which can be seen in a previous post), and as you can see here- her head mounted and displayed. While processing her carcass, a friend and I discovered she was pregnant. Next week is when the preservation of her fawn will be fully complete and ready for display.

There are plenty of things in this form that I can improve on, but over all I am happy with the result. I have learned so much and I cannot wait to apply it to my next animal. Though she had a rough life, I hope I can give her and her baby a beautiful death :)) I am taking name requests if anyone has some.

IM CLEANING UP THIS DEER SKULL AND OH MY GOODNESS THIS IS SO FASCINATING. His adult teeth were JUST coming in, they’re hidden but visible under his baby premolars. the size of his antlers lead me to think he was way older than he actually was- I assumed 2+ years, but this indicates he was only around for maybe 18 months. Nature is incredible I feel so honoured to see this up close. Extra photo of his impressive antlers (he’s all soapy, I’m at the degreasing stage!)

bone post!!

these are from some very old roadkill, i think possibly a juvenile fox. i moved the rest of the remains out of the road into a flower patch.

from left to right - rib (broken), foot bone (?), wrist/ankle bone, vertebra, foot bone (?), teeth and jaw fragments

i've never found this many teeth before, and they're in such good shape considering the circumstances. this is also the second set of (presumed) fox jaw fragments in my collection!

Re-assembled roadkill deer skull <3 I had to piece this guy back together like a puzzle... whatever hit him did some real damage.

He was quite young at time of death, sooo close to losing those last baby premolars (third from the front, you can see the baby teeth barely holding on). That segment of whiter bone on his left side was totally broken off, and I only found it months later when I revisited the area! Thus, the colour difference. The section of scratched up skull on his muzzle’s left side appears to have been left by the impact itself. I wish his antlers kept the original colour I found them in— they were a beautiful reddish hue.
