Illuminating the unavoidable imperfections of nanostructures
A new study by a collaborative team from the University of Twente and the e-Science Center in Amsterdam compares the transmission of light through a utopian model with a real 3D nanostructure. These nanostructures are integral to our daily technologies, such as smartphones and solar panels.
The research was done by Lars Corbijn van Willenswaard, Stef Smeets, Nicolas Renaud, Matthias Schlottbom, Jaap van der Vegt, and Willem Vos from the University of Twente. The paper is published in the journal Optics Express.
The team's innovative approach uses the real 3D nanostructure itself, obtained through precise X-ray imaging, as input for their optical study. This way, the researchers could directly compare the real nanostructure with an idealized, or "utopian," model. The findings reveal that, unlike the ideal design, the real nanostructure exhibits a strong confinement of light which is completely absent in the utopian design.
In the east of The Netherlands, in the softly sloping hills of Twente, sits the most quaint village of Ootmarsum. Art galleries. Architecture. Stunning views.
Scientists use NMR spectroscopy to map polyelectrolyte distribution and solve a century-old chemistry riddle
When two solutions of oppositely charged polymers (polyelectrolytes) are mixed, phase separation occurs and leads to the formation of a polymer-rich phase and a supernatant phase. The precise distribution of all components, that is polyelectrolytes and counterions, had not yet been determined.
Researchers at the University of Twente can now measure quantitatively exactly where these components are distributed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
For more than 90 years, chemists have been fascinated by polyelectrolyte complexes that form after solutions of two oppositely charged polymers are mixed. A better understanding of these complexes is crucial for the development of materials based on these complexes.
📝 Rangers have announced the signing of defender, Robin Pröpper. The Dutch centre-half joins on a permanent deal from Eredivisie club FC Twente, where he was captain.
Me (two hours ago): omg i should change my tumblr theme! Havent updated mine since nested reblogs were a thing! Ooooo heres one w a day/night toggle! So fun! Omg i wonder if i could make the day and night themes have different background images, shouldnt b too hard right?....... right??????
Me (now) (late for work): pls...... wtf is a meta tag........... why arent the buttons working......... whats going on..........
