I feel you about fluttercord - not the ship itself, I'm not super into mlp, but the phenomenon of 'I'd ship this if only it were written differently'

most of the time with other ships I get why people like the dynamic or the aesthetic, it's usually just not for me because of how it's presented in the media itself

and often what bumps something to NOTP status for me isn't the media, it's the fanbase being pushy or bullies about it or woobifying one character to the point I can't stand them anymore when before I was neutral

Stol!tz is that rare ship for me where I'm growing to hate it principally because of the media itself, how it's written and the gap between what the writers think they're doing and what they've actually done (or what they've decided is the best way to fix the problem of s1 without actually fixing it at all, just papering over it and expecting the audience not to notice the problem). The writing is so bad that the fanbase barely figured into my dislike of it, though the fans who stan Stolas to the point of wishing real harm or humiliation to Blitzo and sometimes even to Via certainly didn't help...

and I feel I could've shipped it if only someone else had written it, and they'd purposefully tried to make a messy relationship without babying Stolas or if they'd put in the work to have Stolas redeem himself. it could have been so easy and interesting and good, but instead the show is stuck with one of the worst ships I think I've ever seen in fiction

Hard agree Anon, especially on something gaining NOTP status because of bad fandom behavior. A poorly written ship might make me hate it, but nine times out of ten, it'll be the fandom making gross excuses for it or attacking critics that tips me over into despising it.

I ship about a dozen and a half different iterations of Stolitz, just not the one in the actual show. Pre-Murder Family Instagram Stolitz is pretty much the embodiment of "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and you have burned so very, very brightly."

I fell like people forgot that spider man is the most popular superhero character rn. Spider Man has the most aesthetically pleasing merch that attracts to gen z. Outside of social media and cinephiles spider man is very much loved. Whether people want to believe it or not the new generation still is in with spider man.

Do you think Narcissa ever reached out to Andromeda after the war? If so, did they reconcile or continue their lives without one another.

Lastly, do you think Alice Longbottom had a moment when she remembered Neville? Possibly after the second war, when Neville visits his mum (Hannah accompanies him).

Sirius' tattoos

He doesn't have tattoos. I am sorry, darlings, the movies lied to you. It is not mentioned once in the books that he has tattoos.

I think people want to give Sirius a punk aesthetic, or at least a leather jacket and tattoos because he is a 'rebel' who rides a flying motorcycle,' but I think it's a misunderstanding of his character. He disagrees with his family's pure-blood mania, but he is completely immersed and comfortable in the magical world. We only see him wear robes in the books.

He likes tinkering and inventing things with magic. I think his motorcycle was more a magical experiment and something to keep his hands busy, more than solidarity with muggle culture or an interest in a muggle aesthetic.

Lily detention and muggle-rights

I can imagine Lily's sass probably got her in a detention or two.

We also know from SWM that she is not afraid to stick up for herself and others when she feels an injustice is occurring.

I don't see Lily leading any activist student organizations but she was bold and kind and not afraid to stand up to bullies. So she probably got in a few scraps with other students who she witnessed being cruel to others and if it was a big scrap (James and Sirius both eye her wand with caution in SWM) then yeah, she probably earned a detention or two for being an amazing badass who believes in punching nazis.

Narcissa and Andromeda

I don't think they reconciled. I am not a fan or Malfoy redemption (I know, controversial).

By allowing people like the Malfoys, especially Lucius, to be free from the consequences of being terrorists, the wizarding world doesn't prove that it has reformed its ways. How do we stop the cycle of violence and bring about a society where everyone is valued if the people who perpetuate the violence do not have to face prison and have their wealth stripped away? What is the interest of the post-war government in long-term peace?

I feel like the desire to have the sisters reconcile erases Narcissa's belief in pureblood supremacy and willingness to align with Voldemort's politics. Did she enjoy the experience? No, it was awful. She loves her husband and son, and she had to witness them getting abused by the leader or the terrorist organization they belonged to.

If there is a reconciliation, it is a long, rocky road that may happen in their 80s. Narcissa would have to leave her Death Eater husband and donate all their blood money to an organization that assists muggle-borns.

Andromeda should punch Narcissa in the face after the war.

Alice and Neville

I love reading a good Neville telling his parents about the end of the war fic.

I like to think Alice has some understanding of who Neville is; she gifts him the candy wrappers for a reason. I don't think Alice and Frank ever recover fully.

I do think Alice would be able to squeeze Neville's hand when he visits her and that she loves when he visits and is comforted by the sound of his voice.

Me again, a follow up question. While I know it's pretty much impossible to have a perfect transposition from greek to latin alphabet, I'm trying to have at least some kind of ruling. This said, would you transpose κ as a english "K" (harsh sound) or "c" sweet sound. Ex, Αλκιμεδων is Alkimedon or Alcimedon or whatever? Thank you

That's a great question. The truth is that the transliteration of Greek to Latin characters is terrible because even though the closest letters are chosen, these letters often have different sounds between the two alphabets. The problem is aggravated by the fact that English especially took a lot of Greek words via their Latin version and not directly and by the reliance on the popular Erasmian pronunciation which is questionable on so many levels (and ugly), to say the least.

Grasping the opportunity provided by your example, there is not a soft c in Greek at all. Never has been. The closest one by sound is σ (σίγμα) which is the equivalent of s. There is only κ (kappa) which is a harsh k. The frequent usage of c in words of Greek origin probably only means that these words have made a passing through the Latin language first.

But not just that, d is considered the equivalent of δ but the latter hasn't been pronounced as d for a couple millenias and even when it did, it was still softer than the modern d of the latin alphabet languages.

So the correct way to transliterate Αλκιμέδων to the Latin alphabet is actually Alkiméthon. The problem here is that Greek has two entirely different letters for the two ¨th¨ sounds, whereas English doesn´t. Some transliterate δ as ¨dh¨, as a solution of sorts. This would turn it into ¨Alkimédhon¨.

But because there are so many problems, there are no established rules. I believe the transliteration that should prevail now is the one that follows as accurately as possible the living pronunciation. Pre-hellenistic pronunciations are just theories after all.

So how I would transliterate is:

β as v (not b)

γ as gh (not g) before the consonants and the vowels α, ο, ω, ου and as y before the vowels ε, αι, η, ι, ει, οι, υι

δ as th or dh (not d)

η, ι, υ, ει, οι all as i

θ as th

κ as k

ξ as x or ks (not gz)

σ, ς as s or even as ss in the middle of a word because it is a little more “snaky” than the English s

φ as f or ph

χ as h or kh. Maybe that's how it should be written even before another consonant (i.e χρόνος - hrónos or khrónos as the more popular ¨chronos¨ is often mispronounced as kronos)

ψ as ps, but remember that both consonants are voiced unlike in English where the p is silent.

ω as o

αι as e since this has been the pronunciation for so long

ου as u or ou although I visually don't like the latter. Some use the oo which is not all that wrong but it looks utterly horrendous.

γγ, γκ as ng in the middle of the word, as g in the beginning or if it appears more than once in the word.

μπ as mb in the middle of the word, as b in the beginning or if it appears more than once in the word.

ντ as nd in the middle of the word, as d in the beginning or if it appears more than once in the word.

τζ as tz and not j, as it is a thinner sound.

τσ as ts and not ch, as it is a thinner sound.

This is more or less the transliteration that lately is used for Modern Greek. Those chaotic differences are the reason a Greek woman might tell somebody her name is Thanái and they won't realise she's telling them her name is Danae. XD

Now even though this is more correct I acknoweldge that visually the inaccurate transliteration is often more aesthetically pleasing or maybe it's because we are used to it. Take as example the verb for "skin, peel" :

γδέρνω is gderno in the usual transliteration but it is ghthérno in the more accurate one. The funny thing is that ghthérno looks terribly ugly but it sounds far more delicate and pretty when spoken than the inaccurate but better looking gderno XD

It's a mess what can I say. I have sometimes received some mild criticism for retaining the latin version of Greek words i.e I write Ευρυδίκη as Eurydice instead of the more accurate Evrithiki. Just for visual aesthetics. Honestly Evrithíki sounds nice when you say it but it looks so ugly in latin characters ffs I am so sad about this XD.

The latest example is that I wrote "Andronicus Palaeologus" even though I should have written "Anthronikos Paleologhos". And yet I believe that the latter sounds better than the former. Still, even if it's visually better, Idk, I think we should opt for accuracy especially in more "official", serious circumstances. Unless it looks much uglier and pronunciation doesn't matter in a certain situation so in this case we can show some understanding :P
