Lavender for Royalty; Sage for Wisdom (Book 1) Chapter Five
Kyoya Ootori x Reader
Chapter Five: Bluebell for Humility
Summary: Renge taking control of the Host Club goes as well as (Y/N) expected.
With a few roles assigned by Renge, the production of the first Ouran Host Club Movie came into being as the hosts “became” their new personalities.
“Hitachiin is Ouran’s ace!” cheered the guests as Hikaru and Kaoru played basketball.
“Who made that shot?”
“Hikaru, Kaoru?”
“Who cares? They’re both spectacular!”
“Here’s a towel, Kaoru,” said a girl shyly.
“Thanks, but I’m Hikaru,” said Hikaru.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t…” the guest trailed off.
“No sweat. I’m used to it,” said Hikaru, expression tired. A whistle blew in the game, and Hikaru jumped up from the bench. “Kaoru!” His brother lay on the ground, holding his knee tightly. “Get the stretcher! Take him to the doctor!” Hikaru knelt by Kaoru’s side as he was pulled onto the stretcher.
“The game’s still on. C’mon, Hikaru,” said another (hired) boy to Hikaru. “Hikaru, I said—”
“Shut up,” said Hikaru, kneeling beside Kaoru still.
“Hikaru,” said Kaoru. He reached up to Hikaru. “It’s okay. We can’t share everything. It’s my pain…and your game. Go on.”
“Kaoru,” said Hikaru softly. “I-I can’t…It hurts. It hurts so much. It’s not your pain, it’s ours! If no one understands, too bad! We have each other. We’re here for each other…that’s how it is.”
Somehow, they ended up outside during that entire speech, and rain was pelting down on them.
“I envy you two.” Out of nowhere, Tamaki appeared, soaked in rain. “Never alone, supporting each other.
“But Tamaki, you’re every student’s idol,” said Hikaru.
“Idol, huh?” said Tamaki, scoffing. He sighed. “If that’s all the praise I get is about…then I’m probably better off alone.”
The scene switched to Haruhi leaning against a tree, looking up at Mori and Honey.
“End of the line, pauper,” said Honey. “Remember, when you go up against me, this is what you get?”
Haruhi gazed up in fear at Honey (which was a feat since Honey was so short).
“You must stop.” Mori, a terrible actor, spoke monotonously. “For to hurt others…is to greatly hurt yourself.”
“Don’t question my actions, Takashi,” said Honey. “My next scolding may be more…severe. There are those who must learn their place.” Honey kept his dark expression in place. However, his expression faltered as he gazed at Haruhi. “Waah!” Tears welled in his eyes, and he jumped at Haruhi to hug her. “I’m so sorry, Haru! I won’t be mean anymore!”
“That’s not in the script!” shouted Renge, glaring from her director’s tray. “You must stick to the script! And don’t just recite the lines, put some feeling into it! Okay, everyone, take five! And make that rain melancholier!”
The film crew gave her some thumbs-up. “Yes, ma’am!”
“Straight from Hollywood, it appears,” said Kyoya.
“Oh, good, my humiliation will be in perfect resolution,” said (Y/N), shaking their head with a sigh.
“Rich fan girls…” said Haruhi. “We went from character revisions to a small movie project.”
“I think she said something about opening footage,” said Hikaru.
“She’s making the movie version of ‘Uki Memo,’ ” said Kaoru.
“Aha,” said everyone. It all made sense now.
“Ah, this is dumb,” said Kaoru, huffing. “What’s with us playing basketball, anyway? And getting drenched by the rain?”
“This can’t be worse than my scenes,” said (Y/N), sighing.
“What happened during them?” asked Haruhi. She and the others were working on their scenes, so they hadn’t seen it.
(Y/N)’s cheeks warmed, and they coughed. “I am not Tamaki.”
“That bad, huh?” said Haruhi, chuckled.
(Y/N) sighed. Flirting so forwardly, even just for a film, was not their style. They were friendly, yes, and liked to make people feel nice, but the forwardness they had to exhibit for this film? No thank you.
“Haruhi, (Y/N)! What did you think of my acting?” said Tamaki excitedly.
“It was, uh, fascinating in a way,” said Haruhi.
“You’re very good, Tamaki,” said (Y/N). They were being honest, too. It was a bit dramatic, but that was Tamaki’s style.
“Well, I’ve discovered a new personality facet!” said Tamaki excitedly. “And I think I might go with it for a while.”
“Really?” Haruhi looked up at him and blinked. “Seems to me you’re okay just the way you are.”
Haruhi looked straight again, not seeing how Tamaki’s face blossomed a violent red. (Y/N) smiled to themself.
“I suppose…you could be right,” said Tamaki.
“Haruhi! Would you come over here, please?” said Renge.
“Sure, what’s…” Haruhi rounded the corner and trailed off as she saw two tall classmates standing in front of her. (Y/N) peeked around the corner curiously and frowned.
“I would like these students to appear in our production,” said Renge brightly. “Could you fill them in?”
Haruhi sweat-dropped, and (Y/N) frowned. These were D-Class students, which could be the children of yakuza members who had the money for Ouran but not exactly the class… (Why they were allowed in, (Y/N) would never understand. Rich people were a strange group). Undoubtedly, Renge had chosen them for this reason since they were D-Class. (Y/N) disapproved.
“What’s up?” said the boys.
“We need villains in this piece! And these two will be perfect. They’ll harass our heroes, who will unite to stop them! That will affirm their friendship!” said Renge, grinning fiercely.
“Renge, I don’t think—” began Haruhi.
“Hey, we’re not villains!” The two boys looked horrified at the notion (good for them). “We’re swell guys!”
“In the spectacular ending, Kyoya’s moving words will persuade even the worst elements of the school to be nice and act right!” said Renge excitedly.
“Renge, you can’t tell order people around because you think they fit a profile,” said (Y/N). “Their relative status doesn’t say anything about them.”
“I’m sure there’s a point in all that,” said Renge, moving on in a moment. “But never mind.” She took the arm of one of the boys and pulled him towards the stage. “You just come over here and—”
“Cut it out!” shouted the boy. “Don’t think you can push us around just ‘cause you’re in A-Class!” He shoved Renge towards the scaffolding of the lights.
“Renge!” (Y/N) caught her before she hit the metal. Instead, (Y/N) took the hit, and their shoulder crashed into the poles. Instantly, pain blossomed in their shoulder, and they winced. They stood shakily, holding their shoulder awkwardly.
“Oh, my!” said Renge.
“(Y/N)!” said Haruhi, eyes widening. She went to (Y/N)’s side, concern written on her face. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah,” said (Y/N), but they winced as they spoke.
“Haruhi? We heard a—” Tamaki’s eyes widened as he saw Haruhi holding (Y/N) as they grimaced through their discomfort.
Kyoya’s eyes narrowed dangerously, and Mori was instantly looming behind the boys, who flinched. Hikaru and Kaoru glared at them, and Honey even looked serious.
“Which one of you did this?” said Tamaki, protective as ever of his friends.
“We…We didn’t do anything…much…” said the boys nervously.
“Would you like to be expelled?” said Kyoya, stepping forward. His glasses glinted. “Or do you plan on acting properly?”
The boys paled. “We’re-We’re sorry.”
“Teacher, two guys from D-Class are causing trouble,” said the twins, pretending to call a figure of authority.
The boys grabbed one another and ran before anyone else could threaten them.
“Are you alright, (Y/N)?” said Kyoya, looking at (Y/N).
They nodded. “I think just bruised.” They rolled their shoulder slightly.
“Wow.” Renge spoke as she watched the Host Club band together to take care of one of their own. “Camera! Did you get all that?!” She looked at her film crew anxiously.
“Yep, in the can!” confirmed the team.
“That’s it, then!” said Renge excitedly. “That’s just what I’m after! All we have left is to shoot is Kyoya’s moving—”
Crash.
Kyoya smashed a rock through the camera of the crew with not an ounce of care or emotion in his face. The film crew let out a cry, and Renge’s eyes widened.
“All the footage! It’s ruined! My camera!” cried he cameraman.
“Kyo…Kyoya…” said Renge in shock.
“Sorry to be abrupt,” said Kyoya coldly. “But I cannot permit recordings of our members behaving this way. In fact, this whole business has been a very great bother. Time to wrap it up.”
“But…why?” Tears sprang to Renge’s eyes. Her lip quivered. “Kyoya would pay my head and say, ‘Don’t worry about it.’ Kyoya would—”
“Nah,” said Tamaki. “That’s not our Kyoya.”
“Not to say it wasn’t kinda fun,” said Kaoru.
“Yeah. Love arises for unfathomable reasons,” said Hikaru.
“But for a true relationship, you need to get to know a person,” said (Y/N).
“Seeing someone for who they are…that’s real,” said Haruhi.
“I see…” said Renge quietly. “I’m sorry I didn’t see it sooner.”
l
(Y/N) sighed as they twisted and pressed the ice packet to their shoulder. Wincing, they had to drop their arm. Every time they turned, it aggravated their bruised shoulder, which made treating it difficult.
“That won’t work.”
(Y/N) turned to face the door of the room the Host Club used to store props and costumes. Kyoya walked in and held out his hand.
(Y/N) silently handed over the ice pack and turned back around. Kyoya raised it and pressed it against their shoulder. (Y/N) winced, and Kyoya relaxed the pressure slightly.
“Thank you,” said (Y/N), smiling over their shoulder at Kyoya.
“I allowed Renge to have her fun for too long,” said Kyoya. “One of my best hosts got injured. I can’t have that.”
“It’s barely a bruise,” said (Y/N). “It won’t keep me down.”
Kyoya pressed slightly with the ice, and (Y/N) winced. “And yet it is clearly affecting you.”
“Ow,” said (Y/N). “Fine, I’ll take it easy.”
“Good,” said Kyoya. He looked at them, and (Y/N)’s gaze met his as he spoke. “I can’t have you injured.”
This time, he did not mention their status as a host. (Y/N)’s chest warmed.
l
“Tamaki! Hikaru, Kaoru!” said the guests excitedly as the doors of the Host Club opened.
“Welcome, ladies,” said Tamaki.
“We bought it! The video,” said the girls happily.
The Host Club froze. The what?
“That solemn rain scene is awesome!”
“I’m just giddy over Hikaru and Kaoru’s relationship!”
“Honey being a monster is just precious!”
“Haruhi’s sorrow was so moving!”
“Mori was so deep and mysterious!”
“I wish there had been more (Y/N)! But their wink had me blushing!”
The guests gushed giddily over the video content they’d happily purchased with their money, and the hosts looked on in surprise. They thought it had been destroyed.
“Kyoya?” said (Y/N), looking at him.
“It’s a rather simple matter to sneak data out of a digital camera,” said Kyoya as if it was obvious. “Of course, we did have to pay for the camera. Sales will cover that easily.”
“Anything in the name of profit,” said (Y/N) in amusement.
“Your—The scenes were judiciously edited,” said Kyoya, doing the computations for profit in his notebook.
He always has an angle, thought the entire host club.
“I finally realized!”
The host club looked at Renge in the doorway of the music room. They had been under the impression that she was returning to France after the film fiasco.
“I finally realized that the kindness needed to protect someone, no matter the cost, is not going to be found unless one looks and sees!” Renge grabbed (Y/N)’s hands and smiled joyfully at them. “Right, (Y/N)?”
Everyone could see the hearts floating around her, and the hosts looked at (Y/N).
They closed their eyes and smiled. “I’m glad you’re going to get to know people.”
Renge blushed.
She was quick to change her heart, thought the hosts.
Kyoya made a note and pushed up his glasses. Hopefully, Renge would not prove a bother again.
l
“We have the footage,” said one of Kyoya’s servants.
“Leave it here,” said Kyoya, and the servant bowed, leaving the film on his desk.
Kyoya picked it up and put the drive into his computer. The edits had been made for the video sold at the Host Club, but Kyoya had to see the rest of the footage and delete what he did not want existing anywhere on the internet. After all, when an Ootori wanted something erased, they did not take half measures.
Kyoya clicked on the videos, and the first scene that popped up was one of (Y/N)’s. He narrowed his eyes instantly. (Y/N) had done an excellent job acting, no doubt about that, but the script Renge had given them?
“If only I was as beautiful as all of you.” (Y/N) gently touched a guest’s cheek, who blushed. “No one can compare.” They winked. “You’re like a jewel, darling. Will you let me stand in your light? Pretty please?”
Kyoya was not a fan. This was not (Y/N). They were not so forward, leaning in with a coy smile and a wink, smirking at guests. It was…interesting, to be certain, Kyoya could not deny that, yet the thought of someone else seeing them made Kyoya’s hand go instantly to the “delete” button.
No one needed to see this but him.

Epilogue for Dokutake Ninja [translated]
The last (so far?) of bonus illustrations/short script given to movie goers. And it's a surprisingly bittersweet one! Look up the translation tags to read the others. This takes place after the events of Dokutake Ninja Corps’ Strongest Tactician, so beware of spoilers under the cut!
Uki “Lazy…”
Gyouki “Bweh…”
Donki “Big stretch…”
Fuuki “(He notices them.) Well, don’t you all look relaxed. Uki “Oh, Fuuki.”
Donki “We haven’t had the opportunity to laze around for a while, so we wanted to unwind a bit.”
Gyouki “We sure had it tough lately.”
Donki “Totally.”
Gyouki “More than the mission, it was that guy who was tough, right?” Uki, Donki “Yeah.”
Fuuki “You mean Tenki?”
Gyouki “That’s right.” Uki, Gyouki, Donki “(Thoughtfully.) That Tenki sure was strict…
Uki “When he caught me dozing off while on guard duty, he glared at me with such cold eyes, as if looking at trash that had been forgotten in the kitchen for a month.”
Gyouki “When I had forgotten something on a mission, he glared at me with such cold eyes, like an old sock that hadn’t been washed in a year.”
Donki “When I used a star-patterned scarf to conceal myself behind a tree, he glared at me with such cold eyes, as if he had just discovered some strange creature…” Fuuki “That’s rough.”
Uki, Gyouki, Donki “I guess.”
Gyouki “Anyways, I was always nervous with Tenki around.”
Donki “That’s why we finally get to relax.”
Gyouki “I wish Tenki had been more gentle in his reprimands, though.”
Donki “Right? He was so scary.” Uki “But… He knew how to teach us ninjutsu in a way that is easy to understand.”
Donki “Yeah… Thanks to Tenki, I even started getting overtime pay. Maybe he wasn’t all that bad.”
Gyouki “When I think about how he won’t give me that cold look anymore, it kind of feels a little lonely…”
Fuuki “Even now, I find myself eating Tenki’s share of fish cakes…”
Uki “What a strange feeling…”
Donki “Could it be that we’re all missing Tenki?”
Fuuki, Uki, Donki, Gyouki “(They all look up to stare into nothing.)”

Boywithuke fan project
Okay, so I recently had the motivation to try harder with a project that my friend and I are currently working on. Yes, the real life artist gave me permission and yes I will put a disclaimer saying I don't own boywithuke.
My partner is a talented artist and I write the scripts and ideas. We are combining our talents to help those suffering chronic illnesses like Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, Autism, and more commonly mental abuse.
I know this sounds depressing but the content is actually written in an enjoyable mood. It'll be fun but still a representation of chronic illnesses.
In this project, BoyWithUke is a different incarnation in a Fantasy Fiction setting. As a magic being who gets himself in all sorts of hilarious antics. But he is depressed but doesn't show it. The target audience should already have an idea of why that is. He has a couple similarities with the real artist but with magical peculiarities.
I am currently writing a guidebook explaining the context of the setting and main characters. It's still being written but soon I will start up a website.
I will most likely have it sold through dropshipping after setting up the website. I don't think I should post my patreon link here before setting up the website. But I will show links to my boywithuke fanfics set in the fan project.
On ao3:
Boywithuke works
Or on wattpad:
Boywithuke oneshots
Boywithuke and the apple
Happening in Hoovels
I will give more information to whoever is interested or feel free to ask or comment.
The artist is Katsumi Raiko and they are extremely good. Their art is a bit anime and beautiful. Their Instagram pic is an art of a green haired oc. Follow them there. If we do reach the point of animation then it might probably be on katsumi raiko's YouTube account.
Anyway, thanks to all the individuals who like the fanfiction because you are such loyal Uki stans.

New episode!
Script below the break.
Hello and welcome back to the Rewatch Rewind! My name is Jane, and this is the podcast where I count down my top 40 most frequently rewatched movies in a 20-year period. Today I will be discussing number 12 on my list: RKO and Vanguard Films’ 1947 comedy The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, directed by Irving Reis, written by Sidney Sheldon, and starring Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, and Shirley Temple.
This movie is kind of like the Major and the Minor in that it has an incredibly bizarre premise and absolutely would not be made today but is somehow way better than it has any right to be. There is so much going on that I don’t even know how to summarize the plot concisely in a way that will make sense to people who haven’t seen it, but I’ll try.
Judge Margaret Turner (Myrna Loy) is the guardian of her 17-year-old sister Susan (Shirley Temple), who thinks she sentences people too harshly. Perhaps slightly influenced by this, when artist Richard Nugent (Cary Grant) comes before her charged with starting a brawl, she lets him off with a warning, against the urging of assistant district attorney Tommy Chamberlain (Rudy Vallee). That same afternoon, Richard is the guest lecturer at Susan’s school, and she immediately develops a crush on him. After interviewing him for the school paper, Susan decides she needs to model for him, so that evening she gets into his apartment when he’s not there. As soon as he discovers her, Margaret and Tommy show up, assuming Richard was trying to seduce Susan. Richard ends up in jail after punching Tommy. When it becomes clear how deeply Susan has fallen for Richard, the court psychiatrist, Dr. Matt Beemish (Ray Collins), who also happens to be Margaret and Susan’s uncle, convinces the ADA to drop the charges if Richard agrees to date Susan until her infatuation wears off. And then of course, Richard and Margaret start to develop feelings for each other.
I don’t really remember my first impressions of this movie. I think the rest of my family watched it without me before I’d seen it, but I can’t remember if I was busy doing something else or just wasn’t interested. But it didn’t take long for me to start loving it, and that love has never really faded. I watched it twice in 2003, three times in 2004, once in 2005, once in 2006, once in 2009, twice in 2010, three times in 2011, once in 2012, 2013, and each year from 2015 through 2021, and three times in 2022. I’m pretty sure I had also seen it in 2002, because I remember being very into it in 7th grade, which was the 2002-2003 school year. I was in a writing class with one of my best friends, in which we got to write a play together. I must have shown this movie to her by then because we would quote the “You remind me of a man.” “What man?” “The man with the power.” “What power?” “The power of hoodoo.” “Hoodoo?” “You do.” “Do what?” “Remind me of a man.” “What man?” “The man with the power…” etc circular routine so frequently that we had to put it in our play. Now I know that that has also been referenced in other media, but as far as I can tell, it originated in The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer.
In addition to inventing that silly routine, this script also invented fake slang that I love. Susan likes to say that she’s feeling “sklonklish,” which seems to mean too tired to do anything, which is very much a mood. And then there’s the iconic “Mellow Greetings, Ukie-Dukie” that Susan’s former (and future) boyfriend Jerry White (played by Johnny Sands) teaches Richard, which has been the header on my main Tumblr blog since I started it in 2012. In fact, if you can get past the whole “a court would never order a middle-aged man to date a teenaged girl, wtf” of it all, this movie’s script is surprisingly fabulous, full of great one-line zingers and thoroughly engaging conversations between well-developed characters and several iconic scenes. Sidney Sheldon won an Oscar for the screenplay, which I still kind of can’t believe because goofy movies like this don’t tend to win Academy Awards, but it was definitely deserved. The writing is so excellent that it not only pulls off the ridiculous premise, but it almost makes you forget that the premise was ridiculous in the first place. The characters are written so believably that you don’t want to question them. There are so many great scenes throughout, and the part in the restaurant where it seems like Richard and Margaret might finally get on the same page but keep getting interrupted by more and more characters showing up and the waiters singing “Happy Birthday” and “Happy Anniversary” to a bunch of different people, is still one of the best comedic drama scenes I’ve ever seen.
The script was already incredible on the page, and then it was brought to life by the perfect cast. I’ve already talked about one Cary Grant/Myrna Loy pairing, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, which was made the year after The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, and they are equally delightful together in both, although their characters’ dynamic could not have been more different. In Mr. Blandings, while their relationship has some ups and downs, they’re married to each other the whole time, whereas in Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer they embark on a mutual-contempt-to-mutual-admiration journey. And they both play every stage of their relationship flawlessly. They have incredible chemistry, both romantic and comedic, so their scenes together are beautifully entertaining. And then there’s Shirley Temple. This was toward the end of her film career, and you can kind of tell that the studios didn’t really know what to do with her now that she wasn’t a little girl anymore. In many of her earlier films, she played an orphan who managed to charm grumpy older men, and again in this movie she plays an orphan, but now that she’s a teenager, enchanting adults isn’t cute anymore. The older man needs to find it annoying that she’s trying to charm him, otherwise it would be creepy. I’m sure it must have been frustrating for 19-year-old Temple to be essentially typecast in the same kind of role she’d been playing since she was a toddler, except now she’s the obstacle to the main love story rather than the star. But by golly, she sells the heck out of it anyway. She gives Susan the exact blend of silliness and earnestness required to make the character and the story work. She has a very believable sisterly dynamic with Myrna Loy, even though Loy was definitely old enough to be her mother. It’s unclear what their characters’ age gap is supposed to be – we know that Margaret is an established judge while Susan is still in high school, so they have to be pretty far apart, which is kind of odd because Margaret tells Richard that their parents didn’t get married until they were both out of law school, so they must have been rather old when Susan was born, but let’s not overthink it too much. Margaret is clearly torn between trying to be a sister and parent figure to Susan, who doesn’t seem at all interested in making that easier on Margaret, and I love the way Myrna Loy and Shirley Temple play within that tension.
And then there’s the way Susan interacts with Richard. She thinks he’s the most wonderful person she’s ever seen and is initially awestruck. There’s this great moment when they first meet and she dares to lightly touch his arm, and then looks like that’s the most fantastic thing she’s ever done. And then she decides she’s deeply in love with him, and when they start going out, she’s convinced they’re going to end up together. Richard never really knows what to make of Susan, but he tries to keep up with her as best he can. One of my favorite scenes is when Susan is interviewing Richard, and he starts out just giving her vague, bland answers, but when she keeps insisting that he must have had a very interesting life, he starts making up a super dramatic backstory. She hangs on his every word, absolutely eating it up. At one point, he tells her that he used to steal, and she breathlessly asks, “What did you steal?” Richard’s line is “crusts of bread and things,” but Cary Grant gives one of my favorite line deliveries of all time. He starts with saying “crusts of bread” kind of normally, but then he pauses dramatically, leans forward, and puts a lot of emphasis on “and THINGS” and then does this amazing little nod and I love it so much. “Crusts of bread… and THINGS” is one of those random movie lines I quote a lot and nobody knows what I’m talking about. Anyway, there are a bunch of other very entertaining moments between Richard and Susan, like when they’re watching the high school basketball game and Susan’s really getting into the cheers, and at the end of one, she looks at Richard expectantly, so he just goes, “Rah!” with mock enthusiasm, which seems to satisfy her. And of course there’s the “mellow greetings, ukie-dukie” scene when they’re both just saying nonsense fake slang but making it sound like a real conversation. They absolutely should not be dating, but I really enjoy the aspects of their relationship that don’t involve Susan trying to make something romantic happen. I can definitely see them having a fun sibling-in-law dynamic in the future.
It’s funny because I feel like this movie is one of the main things that made me think that I did have a crush on Cary Grant, and it was also one of the main things that convinced me that I didn’t. In my teens and early 20s, I claimed that I loved this movie because I related to Susan having a hopeless crush on Cary Grant. But eventually I realized that I was relating more to the part toward the end when Susan finally realizes that she actually doesn’t like Richard that way. In Susan’s case, it’s because she’s better suited for Jerry, who is literally perfect for her – they talk the same way and have the exact same attitude toward life, and he cares about her so much that he even organizes a group of friends to make Richard win an obstacle race because he knows it will make Susan happy. In my case, it meant facing the fact that I was probably never going to like anyone that way, despite society’s myths about soulmates and amatonormativity and such, which is perhaps why it took me decades to figure out what Susan learned in a few days. This movie, like most, is very amatonormative, but I think it does a pretty good job of demonstrating that being in awe of someone is not the same thing as being in love with them. The first time Susan sees Richard, she imagines him in shining armor, and immediately puts him on a pedestal. Even if there hadn’t been an inappropriate age difference between them, that kind of relationship is not sustainable. Margaret, too, imagines Richard in armor, but that’s after she’s gotten to know him. She initially saw him as a common criminal, then saw him briefly as a gallant knight, and is mature enough to conclude that he’s just a normal person in between those two, and that’s part of why I feel like their relationship has a future.
While I love most of the characters in this movie, there are two that bother me. One is Dr. Beemish, aka Uncle Matt, and the other is Tommy Chamberlain, aka the assistant district attorney. Dr. Beemish does play an important role in getting Richard and Margaret together, but I don’t know why he has to be so slimy about it. Part of what I don’t like about him is he’s way too focused on Margaret getting married. Before Richard even enters the story, Matt responds to Margaret putting on her judge’s robes with, “Exit woman, enter judge. More’s the pity.” And it’s just like, excuse me, she can be a judge and a woman! It feels like the movie was trying to say, “We’re progressive, but not that progressive” and I hate it. Although Matt does add at the end of that scene that he’s more interested in making sure she marries the right man than making sure she gets married at all, which I guess is nice, though I’m not sure why he’s appointed himself in charge of that. Margaret can find the right man for herself. But to be fair, he did say that in response to Tommy giving her a present, which, like, I’m sorry, but it seems very weird to me that Tommy and Margaret are kind of sort of dating at the beginning of the movie. Like, I’m not an expert on judiciary ethics, but an assistant district attorney dating a judge feels like a major conflict of interest. I guess the idea was that if they got married, she would just… quit? I don’t know, but I don’t like it, which is why I forgive Uncle Matt for trying to steer Margaret away from Tommy and toward Richard. I do think Dr. Beemish should lose his job, and possibly his medical license, for telling the police that Tommy’s a mental patient of his who thinks he’s an assistant district attorney, even though that scene is very funny and Tommy does kind of deserve it. What I’m trying to say is, this movie is far from perfect, but none of its flaws make me love it any less.
I do think it’s a little ironic that this movie made such a big deal about how inappropriate it would be for Cary Grant to date someone as much younger than him as Shirley Temple was, and then in Father Goose he played opposite Leslie Caron, who was born three years after Shirley Temple was. I mean, that movie was made 17 years after Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, and as I mentioned in that episode, age gaps are significantly less disturbing when the younger partner is over 30. But still. Given that Cary Grant would now be 119 years old, it’s kind of wild to me that some of his costars are still alive. (Shirley Temple is sadly not one of them, rest in peace, but Leslie Caron is.) But at least in this movie, Grant’s main leading lady was only a year younger than him. I also think it’s kind of funny that the movie establishes that Richard is 18 years older than Susan, when Grant was actually 24 years older than Temple, especially because Susan was two years younger than Temple. It just goes to show that Hollywood has been messing with people’s perceptions of age for a very long time. I’ve always been more interested in age from a numerical perspective than an existential perspective, and I often forget that most people in this society view aging past adulthood as inherently negative, at least until one reaches a particularly impressive old age. As of this week, I am over a third of the way to 100 years old, which realistically probably means I’m more than a third of the way through my life, but my brain is far more interested in going, “Ooh, 33.33333…infinite threes!” than pondering my mortality. But I’ve learned that that is unusual, and a lot of people get offended if you bring up their age, which is part of why I tend to focus my interest in people’s ages on past movie stars who are either deceased or beyond the point where age becomes a badge of honor again.
Anyway, thank you for spending some of your limited time on earth listening to me discuss another of my most frequently rewatched movies. Next week I’ll be talking about the other Cary Grant movie I watched 25 times while I was keeping track, which is one in which he starred opposite an actress who was significantly younger than him, although she was born a few years before Shirley Temple, and who is, knock on wood, as far as I know at the time of recording, currently the oldest living Oscar winner. So stay tuned, and as always, I will leave you with a quote from that next movie: “Seven parking tickets.”

Rhetoric Assignment Design: Fact Checking
Courtesy of The New Yorker
In this class, we’ve discussed how to identify appeals to ethos in different types of media. We’ve also practiced media literacy, both as a way of combatting misinformation and as an attempt to ensure the work we produce and share is intentional and rooted in fact
For this assignment, you will take critical consumption of media a step further and become your own fact checkers.
Explanation/Description:
The first step is to find a piece of digital media that both makes a claim and has not been fact checked. In general, prominent news sites and journals (think, The New Yorker or the Washington Post) have already been through rigorous fact checking procedures. Instead, find a piece of “news” on sites like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, or a personal blog, that claims something. Make sure the media is not solely an opinion, there should be a clear attempt to share knowledge or news.
Next, try to fact check the claims of your chosen media. Start with a simple Google search, then maybe try the UKY library site, and beyond. Use your skills as a researcher to investigate and find out whether or not the media is true or untrue. If you can’t find any evidence to either back up the claims or refute them, consider those implications as well.
Finally, make your own piece of media as a fact checker. This can either be in video format or a voice recording. Start by explaining the media you found. What claims are made and how does the creator appeal to ethos? Next, share your experience of fact checking. What did you find out? How will this experience impact you as a critical consumer of media?
Requirements:
Your video or voice recording will need to be 4-6 minutes long (around 750 words). You can write out a script to organize your thoughts prior to the recording, but you are not required to submit this.
Please submit your video or voice recording on Canvas in an appropriate format (m4v, .m4a, mp3, .mp4, .WAV, and .MOV). If you would like, you may also submit the report by posting it as an unlisted video to YouTube and submitting the link to me.
Along with the video or audio submission, include a Works Cited page as a separate document on Canvas. Be sure to include your chosen piece of media and any sources you found during your fact checking experience.
Due: December 4th by 11:59PM.
Examples/Tips: If you’re not sure where to start, try heading to a social media feed. If you’re not on social media, scroll through YouTube. Look for news, this could even be from a celebrity or influencer weighing in on current events. Or, consider an advertisement or endorsement, these can also be fact checked.

I’m ruined... Ruined! (/Ukiyo sat down and sobbed on a curb with her face buried into her hands) There’s no coming back from this... I’m going to be disowned... I might be sleeping with the cute little fishies... Oh! But there’s sharks too! (/her sobbing turned into an unfortunately humorous wailing reminiscent of a whale’s call)

Yuki Linked Feelings Rabbit TV Part 2: Talking With Momo
Part 1 | Part 3
Yuki: The higher my position, the harder it'll be for me to move around. I wish to stay in the front lines.
Yuki: I only trust what I see with my own eyes, and it'll be faster if I take care of things by myself.
Yuki: ...Well said, Jade.
Door opens
Momo: Darling! I got a ton of Momorin!
Momo: ...Sorry, am I interrupting your practice..?
Yuki: It's fine. Come on in.
Momo: P-pardon my intrusion...
Yuki: You're not intruding, this is your dressing room, too.
Momo: That's true, but you looked like, really into in the script.
Yuki: I was just reading Jade's lines.
Momo: I see! How was it? Do you like him?
Yuki: I don't hate him. Although he's got a bit of a sharp tongue.
Momo: That's true! But he says a bunch of cool stuff.
Momo: Like that "You say "weaklings" as much as the weaklings do" line!
Yuki: It's good. I wouldn't want to make an enemy of a guy like him.
Momo: Yeah, seriously...
Yuki: I'm glad none of our juniors are like this.
Momo: They're all such obedient and good boys! I want to see everyone in costume soon!
Yuki: Momo, you've got a general knowledge of these games, don't you.
Momo: Yeah! I play the series every now and then.
Yuki: Who's your favorite character?
Momo: Huh!? Hmm... ...Riku's Luke, maybe?
Yuki: Huh. Why him?
Momo: Luke's circumstances are just soooo sad... I can kind of relate to him, too.
Yuki: His circumstances?
Momo: I can't tell you! Play the game! You'll cry for sure!
Yuki: I see. So you're not going to tell me.
Momo: ...Hey, don't just start looking it up online when I'm right here!!
Yuki: The internet sure is handy.
Momo: It is, buuuut..! Are you fine with spoilers, Yuki!?
Yuki: I suppose so. Not knowing feels worse to me.
Momo: Yuki, you don't get it!! Don't you want to experience the story with your own eyes, ears, and heart!?
Yuki: I can still do that after I've read the spoilers.
Momo: Geeeeez! If you do that, you'll anger not only me, but Nagi, too!
Yuki: Why would Nagi-kun be mad at me? I think Cocona-chan is cute enough.
Momo: This isn't about Cocona..! I'm telling you that you don't understand the feelings of the fans!
Door opens
Rintaro Okazaki: W-what's the matter, you two!? Are you fighting again!?
Yuki: We're not fighting. This is a discussion.
Momo: It wasn't anything that elegant, though!
Rintaro Okazaki: What happened?
Yuki: We were talking about how cute Cocona-chan is.
Rintaro Okazaki: Cocona?
Momo: We were not..!
Rintaro Okazaki: I'm not sure what you were doing, but I could hear you from the hallway. ...Aah, now there'll be more rumors about you two having a bad relationship...
Yuki: Let them talk. I'm not bothered by it.
Momo: Does it bother you, Okarin..? I guess it's not good for the agency.
Rintaro Okazaki: Rather than it being a hindrance to the agency, I personally can't stand hearing people speak ill of you two.
Momo: Okarin..!
Yuki: Okarin, you're a good man. I'm sorry I thought you were a shrimp.
Rintaro Okazaki: S-shrimp..?
End of Part 2.

France agrees to return 26 African artworks claimed by Benin | News
French President Emmanuel Macron has agreed to return “immediately” 26 African artworks claimed by Benin, in keeping with the president’s workplace.
The choice on Friday got here shortly after Macron acquired a report detailing how former colonisers can return looted artworks to Africa.
Governments from Ethiopia to Senegal eagerly awaited the report, commissioned by Macron and complied by French artwork historian, Benedicte Savoy, and Senegalese economist Felwine Sarr.
It recommends that the hundreds of things in French museums taken with out consent in the course of the colonial interval be returned to the continent.
Except it may be confirmed that the objects had been obtained legitimately, they need to be returned to Africa completely, the report’s authors say.
Savoy and Starr additionally advocate altering the French legislation to permit the restitution of cultural works to Africa, after Macron introduced that he needed the method to start inside 5 years.
French legislation at present forbids the federal government from ceding state property, no matter the way it was obtained.
“I can not settle for that a big a part of the cultural heritage of a number of African international locations is in France,” Macron mentioned throughout a go to to Burkina Faso final 12 months.
“There are historic explanations for this however there isn’t any legitimate, lasting and unconditional justification. African heritage can’t be solely in non-public collections and European museums – it should be showcased in Paris but additionally in Dakar, Lagos and Cotonou. This will probably be certainly one of my priorities,” he mentioned.
‘A brand new period of thought’
On the top of its colonial empire, France managed giant swathes of the African continent, eradicating artwork produced there for show in museums within the French capital, Paris, and elsewhere.
Objects that arrived in France went on to affect the work of main figures in European artwork, equivalent to Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, and Italian painter and sculptor, Amedeo Modigliani.
In response to the report, about 90 p.c of African artwork is at present housed in museums and personal collections outdoors the continent, together with statues, thrones and manuscripts.
There are about 90,000 African artworks in French museums, most of them housed in Paris’ Quai Branly museum, which additionally boasts a big assortment of Asian artwork.
The museum was established by former French President Jacques Chirac, an avid collector of African artwork.
The choice may up the stress on different European governments to return looted artefacts [File: Philippe Wojazer/Reuters]
Whereas the choice has been welcomed by officers in some African international locations, European artwork sellers have expressed considerations that repatriation will go away some French museums practically empty.
The sellers have additionally questioned who the objects needs to be returned to when most of the kingdoms and civilisations they had been taken from now not exist.
Nevertheless, the top of Ethiopia’s Authority for Analysis and Conservation of Cultural Heritage had mentioned the report heralded “a brand new period of thought” in Europe’s relations with Africa, whereas Senegal’s tradition minister Youssou Ndour mentioned it was “totally logical that Africans ought to get again their works”.
Thorny diplomatic concern
France’s resolution may up the stress on different European governments and museums to return looted artefacts, which might change into a diplomatic headache in addition to a painful reminder of colonialism.
In response to the AFP information company, roughly 180,000 African artworks are held in Belgium’s Royal Museum for Central Africa, whereas 37,000 extra are within the Weltmuseum in Austria.
The British Museum in London can also be in talks to return artefacts, looted from the traditional Benin kingdom, to Nigeria, which now occupies the territory.
This month, a Chilean delegation travelled to the UK to request the return of artefacts from two London museums.
The UKis additionally embroiled in a protracted standoff with Greece over the Elgin Marbles, also called the Parthenon Marbles, which had been faraway from Athens within the 1800s.
