This will simply be how much I enjoyed the stage. Mostly I prefer comedy so for me quite a lot of these will have a lot of funny moments but not all of them do.
This will be extremely opinionated but I will try to be positive. Weirdly even though these are the ten shows I most enjoyed, I don’t think three of them would be in my top ten favourite. Some explanations will be more emotional than others.
I will also not explain about the plot to the shows and will try to spoil as little as possible.
1. Prince of Tennis
This should come as no surprise and I won’t go into this two much but Prince of Tennis is the show that really kickstarted 2.5D in my opinion and is the show that made me absolutely fall in love with the industry. I can sing over 100 of the songs and know most of the actors names and is my absolute addiction. I just think Prince of Tennis is so fun, diverse and it’s so exciting to see all these actors who start in Prince of Tennis grow so much and appear in so many other things
2. Mankai A3
I was so surprised by A3. I didn’t really enjoy the game at first and was so confused as to why it suddenly became so popular. I must admit its popularity was one of the things that held me up watching it until I found I cheap version of Spring and Summer then gave in. I thing watched it every day for a week. This show completely pulled me in with fun songs, a compelling cast of characters and a surprising amount of emotion. (For me who did not play the game, if you did play the game, this would not have been surprising)
The company of actors is split into four groups and I was surprised how individual each group was. My favourite, summer, are the youngest of the company and I absolutely loved their play.
For anyone trying to get into 2.5d plays, this is probably where I would point them first. It is such a fun play with a perfect blend of comedy, emotion, drama and action
3. Yowamushi pedal
Disclaimer: I have only seen up until the end of Ogoe Yuuki’s run as Onoda.
While I didn’t put Yowamushi Pedal on my top 10 for quality, I don’t think it was ever trying to be a high quality show. The showrunners knew there was no way they could show people cycling on stage in a wholly serious manor if they couldn’t use actual bikes. So, they decided to change the tone of the show, which I think wouldn’t have worked in the anime but works perfectly on stage.
If I ever need cheering up Yowamushi Pedal stage is definitely something I would turn to. Every single show has me crying with laughter and it is amazing to see actors having so much fun on stage.
There are so many hilarious moments but the top two for me is when Izumida’s peck Frank, yes his pecks are anthropomorphised on stage, starts touching the other members of Hakogaku and when they are at Toudou’s inn and their cleaner is Harry Potter and he cocks his broom as fires it like a gun at two actors who are pretending to be ducks. Both make absolutely no sense but are amazing to watch and I don’t think I will ever not laugh while even thinking of them.
4. Touken Ranbu Musical
It is strange that I cry in every single musical and yet I still have an image of the musicals not being sad. I think they get the perfect blend of emotion and comedy for what they are trying to achieve. The actors, on the whole, portray their characters so well and the live segments may just be pandering to the fangirls, but I am a fangirl/fanboy and I love it. The songs fit so perfectly and I don’t think I’ve ever loved reasonably minor characters as much as I do the humans in Touken Ranbu. I think all their actors are excellent and I am slightly in love with Minamoto no Yoshitsune’s eye makeup.
The thing that sold me the most on this musical however, was none of that. I am studying Japanese and it amazes me how much actual history and Japanese culture I have learnt from these musicals. To the extent of me being able to have a conversation in Japanese about the Minamoto clan with an actual Japanese History Teacher whose favourite period of Japanese history is that period and him complimenting me on my knowledge.
Touken Ranbu also celebrates Japanese culture so much. The taiko drumming in the live, the actual drinking song included in the show and the time where they put on a festival during a live. I feel like this show is a must see for anyone who likes Japanese culture and Japan would seem to agree with me as it far outranks any other show in the industry for popularity.
While it doesn’t appeal to me in ways that the three above do I love this musical so much I can’t wait until I can see the next one.
5. Bakumatsu Rock
I keep on forgetting I’ve seen this show live as I saw it in 2015 which was a while ago and was only the third show I ever saw and I was also sick before it so I was a little delirious. But I still remember the feeling of utter joy I had leaving the theatre with Crash My Head stuck in my...head. The acting is so good, the songs are amazing and the actors look like they’re having such a good time.
I won’t go into the recast as I already mentioned that in the previous ranking but they didn’t stop me from still enjoying the final two stages. I think it was very sad that the show was so short but I don’t really want to see them bring it back.
I think what we have of the show is perfect and I love it with all m heart.
6. Aoharu Tetsudou
This is a musical I think very few people will have watched. A lot of people like it for the fact it combines a lot of Prince of Tennis actors who haven’t acted with each other in a while but while that is what originally got me into the show it is not at all why I stayed.
This somewhat factual history of different Japanese train lines is utterly insane with the strangest characters, songs and moments. And has led to some of the strangest conversations with Japanese people who know the train lines well
‘So the Rinkai line is a bit ecchi and stalks the Saikyo line’
‘Oh yeah, that makes perfect sense’
‘??? How can a train line be ecchi?’
Also, this show is unabashedly gay. There is a character who continually asks another character to marry him, three different love songs between three different couples and actual other characters saying that they are gay. While it works in a similar way to Hetalia, if countries get married they are uniting, if trains get married they become one train it is still very gay. There are also multiple instances of characters stripping and cosplaying as women.
I love this show to bits but if you are not used to Japanese acting or you want to show a musical to someone who is not used to Japanese acting, absolutely do not watch/show this musical. I love the overacting and find it hilarious but this is the most overacting I think I have ever seen in a show ever and while I think it really works for this show it will be pretty jarring if you are not used to it.
7. Hiragana Danshi
This show in my opinion is the most underrated musical in the 2.5d industry, along with Aoharu Tetsudou but even more so. The show is about letters of the Hiragana alphabet but they are more the sounds than the actual hiragana so they represent the katakana and kanji as well. Everything they like has to start with their hiragana and there are so many puns. The cast is hugely popular and talented and each one portrays their character so well. The show is so funny and you absolutely will leave with a favourite character.
The songs are very clever and, almost, all the actors have very good voices and the songs compliment them well. It’s sad that the show seemed to be such a passion project and was truly beloved by the staff and actors but there were not enough fans to ensure that there could be a second stage.
8. Bungou Stray Dogs
I don’t have very much to add from my previous comments on this show. It is exceptional as I loved the original anime I was so happy to see such a well done adaptation, that slightly made me realise that I am very attracted to Chuuya. I think this show would also be a very good introduction to 2.5d as it shows off the best aspects of the industry.
9. Mob Psycho 100
I didn’t originally enjoy the Mob Psycho anime but after I loved the stage I went back and watched the anime again and I loved it. I thought the stage was so funny and I could not think of someone more perfect than Baba Ryoma to play Reigen and I’m so happy that recently Baba Ryoma has been given more chances to play comedic characters which I really think suits him.
I don’t have very much to say about this play except I loved it and fully recommend it
10. Cells at Work
I have seen both stages as I actually managed to go see the second live last week.
While I do think I preferred the first one overall I did love the second one and I personally think that Kitamura Ryo fits with the image of White blood cell from the anime better.
The shows manage to be so funny but evoke so much emotion with Yamada James Takeshi’s performance of the cancer cell. I think it is the best acting he has ever done and really wish they had a 2.5d version of the tony’s so he could get an award for his role.
There is something about them that feels distinctly different from most other 2.5d productions in my opinion and I love it.
only 2 days are left in 2019... so I thought it’s time for this year’s watched list

71. LUNATIC LIVE 2018 ver BLUE & RED [December 26th, 2018 & December 27th, 2018]
· Bakumatsu Rock Ultra Soul (VITA)
It was an okay visual novel with likable characters and low-key humor. Not the best choice if you’re looking for a good rhythm game, though.
· Bioshock (PC)
The story was kind of weak, especially the ending. But the surprises in store were totally worth experiencing.
· Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (IOS)
I know a lot of fans dislike this one, but it was my favorite of the series so far o_o I loved how everything came together in the end, and it made me really like Naruhodo as a character. Plus, I didn’t think the leaps of logic were that bad compared to the previous games.
· Dropsy (PC)
It was enjoyable at first. But then the puzzles got really obtuse and that ending was just bizarre.
· Dragon Quest Builders (VITA)
It got pretty challenging but it was also really fun!
· Zero Escape: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (VITA)
Ugh... I guess I did enjoy the puzzle-solving parts, although it would be better if the game didn’t give you hints right away. But the ending didn’t really make sense, and also I was just appalled by how the game treated its female characters :(
· The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC Evolution (VITA)
This is not only my favorite game that I played this year, but my favorite game of ALL TIME. The story was engaging, the music and sound effects were great, and the characters were very likable- especially Joshua <3 But most of all, the turn-based combat was just unbelievably, ridiculously fun. Will definitely play the sequel someday!
· Hatsune Miku Project Mirai DX (3DS)
Now THIS is a good rhythm game. I’ve never been drawn to the aesthetics of the regular Miku games, but I can definitely get down with this adorable nendroid style! :3 I’m also glad this game introduced me to a lot of good vocaloid songs.
· Odin Sphere Leifthrasir (VITA)
I was enjoying this game quite a bit- the beat-em-up style gameplay was great for stress relief lol. But unfortunately all the bosses at the end took the fun out of it, especially since you need to beat them multiple times. Also, I am NOT a fan of the ending.
· Persona 4 Dancing All Night (VITA)
Another good rhythm game, while simultaneously being a good visual novel. It was so nice to revisit these characters and re-witness their friendship :)
· Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)
My friend forced me to play this game since I finally got a 3DS. I enjoyed it for about two months before deciding that was enough. Good, peaceful times.
· Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
I know this game is pretty much worshipped, but I’m so bad at platformers that I found it frustrating rather than fun. I’m proud of myself for finishing it despite the many rage-quits, though.
· Kingdom Hearts Final Mix (PS4)
I was really looking forward to this one, but it has nothing but flaws. The combat is mostly button mashing. The camera sucks. It’s super annoying that the enemies keep respawning because you can’t open chests, activate trinities or even change your inventory when they’re around. The story isn’t that good. I’m not even sure if I like the main characters. But still... I can’t hate this game. The power of friendship and the determination to do the right thing showcased by Sora, Goofy and (sometimes) Donald are just too pure. Oh, and BEAST’S LOVE FOR BELLE IS NEXT LEVEL. Basically, the game’s only redeeming quality is its theme, but somehow that’s enough. I guess I’m just a sucker for this stuff :P
· Rhythm Heaven (Wii)
It was fun. Nothing much to add. The songs with lyrics are fun to sing at karaoke lol.
Otome games I played in 2017
· Snow Bound Land (PSP)
I understand how some people might find this game boring. It’s definitely slow-paced and fairy-tale-esque, but overall I thought it was a nice and enjoyable story. My favorite character was Craes the cutie :3
· Psychedelica of the Ashen Hawk (VITA)
I hated this game. In fact, I still hate this game. Which is a shame because Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly is my favorite otome game of all time, alongside Amnesia. But this game doesn’t understand the fact that you can’t do whatever you want just because your genre is fantasy. YOU STILL HAVE TO ADHERE TO THE RULES WITHIN YOUR FICTIONAL WORLD. Like, in the ‘true ending’ a character solves this huge problem, but the game doesn’t tell you how he solved it? We’re just supposed to focus on the fact that it was solved and be satisfied because it’s a happy ending? There are so many instances of this, and I’ve never been so insulted as a gamer. Just thinking about this game makes my blood boil. Don’t write fantasy if you can’t world build and then see that world through.
· Amnesia Crowd (VITA)
A much more satisfactory fandisc than Amnesia Later. I liked the cute, comical vignettes and the CGs were especially beautiful.
· Abunai Koi no Sousashitsu (PSP)
This game should have stayed a mobile game lol. I was actually impressed because the male characters were surprisingly unique and not cliche, but the overall quality was just pitiful, and the storylines weren’t fun to follow. Ogasawara and Kenji are hella cute, though.
· Moshi, Kono Sekai ni Kamisama ga Iru to Suru naraba (VITA)
Wow this game is shockingly dark. I enjoyed it as a horror game, but don’t go in expecting a dating sim. I ended up not really liking any of the male characters anyway. On the plus side, I’m interested in Japanese mythology now.
· Beast Master and Prince ~Flower and Snow~ (VITA)
Another fandisc. I’m sure I enjoyed it at the time, but it was pretty forgettable.
· Tokyo Yamanote Boys (PSP)
This game was a drag. It wasn’t necessarily awful but it wasn’t fun either. They should have made it a full-on comedy game instead of trying to have a serious plot with these ridiculous characters. (Remember: never half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing.) Surprisingly, my favorites ended up being Takumi and Yuuto. Tetsu was the most my type but his route was way too boring :< I’m just glad I got the PSP games for cheap instead of buying the new Vita version.
Mobile games I enjoyed throughout 2017
· Fire Emblem Heroes
I’ve never played Fire Emblem before, but now I definitely want to try it, thanks to this mobage. The gameplay is really fun, and it’s also pretty generous with gacha tickets. I wanted to get Marth because his voice actor is Midorikawa-san, and I finally got him after months :D Before that I was maining Chrom, who’s voiced by Sugita-san. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that both of these characters are quite prominent in the series, because again, I had no idea lol.
· Stand My Heroes
It’s mostly an otome game, but the puzzle gameplay is solid. I always skip the story so I don’t know any of the characters’ names, but my favorite is the one voiced by Kakihara-san :)
Today’s actor of the day is Iwasaki Dai! He wa born July 2nd, 1977 in Tokyo, and made his debut as an actor in 1998. He is a very, very accomplished stage and drama actor, with many roles in each medium. He has only be in a handful of productions adapted from anime, however; the most notable of these include Baldroy in Kuroshitsuji - The Most Beautiful DEATH in the World-, and Kaishu Katsu in Ultra Musical Bakumatsu Rock. Besides acting, Iwasaki Dai enjoys watching movies, and says that his favorite film is The Nightmare Before Christmas!
Musical『Hetalia 〜in the new world〜』Visual Shooting Part ④【Russia · Yamaoki Yuuki】Interview
03-07-2017 | Source
Yamaoki Yuuki was born on 05 March 1992. He is from Tokyo. He debuted as an actor in 2002. His name is well-known for his role in Musical 『Tennis no Oujisama』 (as Yanagi Renji) and he is active in numerous stage plays, such as Ultra Musical★Bakumatsu Rock and Sengoku Musou (as Shima Sakon). He is a lovable, often-being-teased person. This time we have a chance to talk to him about the enjoyment of Hetamyu.
――How did you feel when you first hear that there will be a third stage?
I'm happy that it continues as a series. However, as the stages progressed, there is a pressure to aim further and become better than the previous works. It is no good if I can't portray the character well, so I study a lot to be able to play Russia as I want to show new sides of him.
[Photo//look in the source yourself] His shooting is the first, so it took times to prepare the settings and other things. From the back, France-oniisan and America were shouting teasingly, such as "Do your job properly!" or "Let out your inner gravure!" things like these lol.
――Looking back to the second stage, what is your impression?
Russia is like a young boy, a character that speaks what he thought honestly. That's why he is kind of dark, wanting attention from others. This work allows these feelings to appear completely.
When we were arranging a festival for England, I acted as the villain until the end, I'm really happy to be able to show Russia's dark side there. I feel like I have been letting out his character more than when I did in the first stage.
――This time we have Prussia as well. He seems involved with Russia in some ways.
I haven't heard anything about this stage (the interview was in May), I'm looking forward to see how we interact. He is a character that appears quite a lot in the original work, I want to know how he will bring out the story from his point of view. I have never worked with Takamoto (Gaku)-san, who played Prussia, before. This is his first time participating, I don't want him to feel left out.
The first stage follows the story line of the original work, but last time there is an original plot about dueling as well. I wonder how this time will go. Is Prussia going to have an original story line or following the original, I look forward to it as well.
When we met during the second stage, the director — Yoshitani (Koutarou)-san — and the producer talked about how "the duel is original", so the casts also fought like it was a real duel. When the audience watched, I heard things like "I want to see Hetamyu following the anime story line" and also "It isn't strange if the story differs from the anime", I'm happy to hear these opinions. Because the world is formed by many opinions and it is not just one man's world.
Like when we turned a toy box upside down... That's how Hetalia is. In it we have laughter, songs, many entertaining things, I think it is a very wonderful work.
――In the second work, how did the practice go?
When I practiced the second stage, I entered it along with the same people from the first stage, so there was a feeling of confidence and it was different than other stages. Usually when casts first met in a practice, it was to get to know each other, but in the practice of the second stage of Hetalia, we laughed and getting along well from the first day.
――Talking about laughing, the adlibs were being put in the DVD, weren't they?
Yes yes! lol I'm totally embarassed! I was desperate each time, so when I saw it again I was thinking "why did I do it like this". I had a section with America · Isogai Ryuuko-san where I had to adlib a lot, they were pretty bad.
――Was it being initiated by Isogai-san?
Yes. I was just replying back, but it was pretty tough. But fans said it was totally Hetalia-like, so if I have to do it again this time, I hope I can give a proper reply.
I want to make everyone laughed, but as this is a musical, I also want to act and sing well. And then this work will be better than the last. By all means, please look forward to watch us in the theater.
I decided to do a personal 2.5d stage and musical ranking. For anyone who is looking for suggestions for shows to watch you might be interested in this.
This is a part one of two
Couple of disclaimers:
I will do two top 10′s. One for quality and one for personal enjoyment as when I thought about it those lists came out quite differently.
I am quite opinionated but I will try and only say positive things as I am only going to do the ones I think are at the top.
I have not seen a few 2.5D productions, including popular ones such as Ensemble stars so please don’t be offended that I haven’t included it.
Ranking and explanations under the cut
Top 10 in Quality
I have ranked the quality of these shows based on several elements:
Staging, costuming, actor’s performances, blocking (dances and fights), comedy (if there is any), emotion, singing and songs.
I was not basing this ranking at all of faithful adaption of the original source material as for some I have not seen the original source material so I cannot make a fair judgement on that.
1. Tied in First is Mankai A3 and Kuroshitsuji
This be quite a shock for some people as Black Butler is considered by some to be in a different league to all other 2.5d productions. While A3 is very different, I could not chose which between the two I actually thought was higher quality overall. While Black Butler does, I think have better staging, costuming and singing, for the most part. I do think the actual songs for Mankai compliment the story a little better in places, as well as the comedy and emotion landing better with me in Mankai than Black Butler. The actor’s performances is probably the hardest thing to judge. While I think no one in Black Butler ever stands out as weaker at their role, there are very few for me who stand out. I think I would say there are only two who really stood out to me. Sasaki Yoshihide (Druitt) and Uehara Takuya (Grell). While Furukawa Yuuta’s singing was amazing he never really blew me away with his performance. Whereas in Mankai there are so many actors who I think managed to capture the emotions of the characters and the changes the characters go through. But there are a few who I think do stand out as being obviously weaker than the others.
Overall Black Butler has outstanding production value and no weak performances but never absolutely blew me away.
Mankai did have some weak moments and obviously lower production value than Black Butler but did often blow me away with certain bits.
3. Touken Ranbu Stage 4. Touken Ranbu Musical
While these two are not tying as they have the same source material I will deal with them together.
I haven’t actually seen as much of the stage as I have a few other shows on this list but there was no doubt in my mind that both Touken Ranbus had to come 3rd and 4th and overall I think Touken Ranbu Stage just edged ahead of the musical.
I would say that despite coming from the same original material both shows have a distinctly different feel. While the stage feels like a drama, the musical feels more like a soap opera. While I don’t think it is similar to any actual soap opera show, it has many highs and lows constantly throughout the show.
Whereas I felt like, from the stages I’ve seen, the stage stays on a similar tone throughout the show until the end as is quite tense except for a few breaks for comedy. (I am not including the most recent show in my thoughts as I feel as though it deviates from the norm for the stage.)
The costumes for the stage are marginally better I feel as though this is a slightly unfair thing to compare as the costumes for the musical have to be designed for a lot more movement for songs and dance numbers.
But I will compare them as I am basing this on quality so I think the main thing that brings the stage higher than the musical for me is the production value. The staging and costuming is excellent. The acting is phenomenal and while I don’t think the comedy is always better than the musical. I think the comedy it does have is very good.
The musical for me wins outright in only one category which is emotion (as the stage does have songs as well and I cannot fault a single one whereas I can fault a few in the musical). For some reason the emotion in the stage never hit me as hard as the musical did. I have never cried at the stage (though I have not seen the extremely recent ones) but I have cried at every single musical. I think the actor’s portrayal of emotion and the writing of emotional situations just beats out the stage but that is the only category it clearly wins in for me.
Overall stage has much higher production quality and, just on quality, I would not say it has almost any faults.
Overall I think the musical is much more emotional and the production quality is very good, just not as good as the stage.
5. Bungou Stray Dogs
I am not sure for this show, as with Prince of Tennis later, if it would be on this top 10 if I hadn’t seen it live. Seeing this show live was amazing.
I think the acting performances are perfect, the blocking is excellent and the staging works perfectly for the stage.
Honestly, I cannot think of a single fault this show has which might seem strange as I have put it below four other shows which I do find a few faults with but I think comparatively it’s production value just isn’t as high as the previous four.
6. Tied at sixth is Naruto and Onmyouji
I have very little to say for both of these as while I think they are excellent quality, neither of them are stages I have watched many times. I also have not seen the second Naruto stage.
I think Onmyouji might have the best costuming of any 2.5d show in my opinion. Every single character looks flawless, even more so than the usual quality of 2.5d shows. I also think that the acting is solid and the staging works very well for the show.
Naruto probably has the best blocking of any 2.5d show. The trampoline that is used for the ninja fights works perfectly and I think it looks amazing. The staging is excellent and there are no faults with the performances or the costumes.
8. Prince of Tennis
I definitely think if I was basing this off the 1st season solely then it would not be in the top ten. Neither would it be if I was basing this on the first and second season. But I think the fact that they both exist is one reason why Prince of Tennis is in the top ten. The evolution and improvement the show has undergone in the 16 years of its existence I think cannot be overstated.
From the costuming to the acting to the staging to the singing to even the posters I think that 3rd Season Prince of Tennis is the perfect way to depict a sports anime on stage. While I do have problems with some of the actors, which I will not get into, I think Prince of Tennis has evolved into a high quality, mature and great show.
I might be a bit biased as I have seen it live 14 times, I do think that it holds up on DVD.
I don’t think any other sports anime adapted for the stage has got the way to depict their sport as perfect as Prince of Tennis has. While I think it may be the easiest to depict it never looks strange or unrealistic but actually increases the quality of the show I think as the games look so clean.
Overall I think that it is an amazing show that has come so far and there is a reason it has been going on for 16 years.
9. Haikyuu
I think while it might not have as good production value as other shows on this list Haikyuu is so beloved for a very good reason. The actors do very well, it blends comedy and emotion well and has great staging. The comedy in Shinka no Natsu is amazing and perfectly depicts a training camp and evolution arc. I have actually watched a lot of this show I’m just not quite sure how to explain the quality of the stage.
I think it’s quality is very good and there are very few things I would fault it just never blew me away with any elements like those above did
10. Bakumatsu Rock
This one may not seem as obvious to some people and I’m sure very few people would put it in their top ten for quality but for me the costumes are fantastic and the performances of nearly all the songs is very good. The only reason it isn’t higher on the list is I was not a fan of the recast of Cindy and Sensei (I do know Ii got recast as well but honestly I have no problems with his new actor). I much preferred the previous actors and I think, especially Cindy’s original actor, they had something and understood the character in a way the recasted actors didn’t.
I think everything in the original two plays was perfect for the kind of show Bakumatsu rock is and also I still find Sensei’s original actor’s drum playing to be very impressive as it looks so much like he is actually playing.
So that’s the top 10 for quality list, I will do the top 10 for enjoyment next. If there is a show on here and I haven’t mentioned too much about it but have not mentioned only seeing it limited amounts then there’s a chance it’s on the next list and I’m going to go more in detail then
