Dooont even get me started man (lighthearted) that shit makes me evil. Genuinely one of the nails in the coffin of Hilbert being the most interesting character to me was that he just didn’t fucking. Care if he died. So long as he knew his work was being continued. I wrote a whole post going insane about it actually. He doesn’t care!!! He doesn’t!!!!! What is wrong with him!!!!! And then you realize that his work wasn’t even going to do what he wanted it to do if it made it back to earth anyways because cutter was just going to use it to mega death bomb the entire earth as a threat to the aliens. circumstances surrounding the “leaked” documents about eiffel’s sentencing in need to know, as i understand them:

one of the very first things kepler does is offer eiffel, minkowski, and lovelace a drink. in true “at any given moment, kepler has about eighteen ulterior motives” spirit, it is, among other things, “hospitality”, sure, a test for eiffel, definitely, but… i think the main reaction he was checking for was minkowski’s. will she look at eiffel, or react to his reaction? how much does she know? how much does he trust her?

in don’t poke the bear, jacobi and maxwell stop lovelace from breaking into kepler’s server by pretending to be in on it with her: “she’s very good. it might turn into a problem.” / “i’ll run it by kepler.” two episodes later, files from kepler’s very secure server are “leaked.”

(the words "need to know" are spoken offhandedly by eiffel in the episode itself, but it also calls back to the excuse maxwell gives lovelace: "colonel kepler practically lives by the words 'need to know.' and, apparently, nothing i can say will ever convince him that i 'need to know' everything that's in our databanks.")

need to know opens with minkowski finishing an eleven hour shift, and then finding out kepler moved that shift to, well. now. she’s already frustrated and sleep deprived.

minkowski complains to kepler. jacobi and maxwell, on cue, barge in and complain to kepler. kepler assigns minkowski, jacobi, maxwell, and lovelace to punishment detail, taking eiffel out of the group because “you’re the only one who hasn’t wasted my time with pointless whining.” lovelace says: “um, i don’t think that i did any complaining either, so…” but that doesn’t matter. it’s just an excuse to remove eiffel from the group; he could just as easily have been singled out for special punishment. either way, it was going to happen.

hilbert isn’t there. not the most significant factor, since he’s already been effectively sidelined by kepler, but remember he already knows about eiffel’s sentencing, doesn’t care (about eiffel’s history OR about anyone else’s personal drama), and will later respond to minkowski asking by telling her to grow up and get back to work. it simplifies things to not factor him in.

consider the files themselves: we know from happy holidays that maxwell not talking to her family is common knowledge, but jacobi reacts like it’s news. we know from hera’s performance review flashback in memoria that kepler and jacobi were aware of “multiple attempted crew member homicides” in her record. the file about hera’s bentham directory was on kepler’s server. if there’s one person who would’ve been briefed on everything there was to know about hera, it would’ve been maxwell; her shock is entirely feigned. in fact, almost every reaction from jacobi and maxwell here is feigned. they’re black ops specialists who arrived prepared with divide-and-conquer tactics. there’s no reason they wouldn’t know these things. also note that none of the “leaks” reveal anything about the mission they didn’t already know, and that nothing about the si-5 is incriminating - if anything, it’s mostly silly and even humanizing. and, yes, all of that contextualizes maxwell’s reaction to “skiing?!”

eiffel’s file comes through last, once they’re already worn out. kepler sends eiffel to check on them at the same time so that he’ll walk in. jacobi shows minkowski the file. he lurks around waiting to see how her not-confrontation with eiffel goes, and then cements the thought in her head: what about you? are you going to care?

it’s true that there are aspects of the mission only kepler knows, but as far as information on the hephaestus crew goes (barring one very particular detail about lovelace)? that’s part of the job they were chosen for. when they kill the plant monster, kepler says: “you think we didn’t know about that thing? please. we listened to every log that you beamed down to canaveral.” kepler’s entire foundation is shaken when jacobi turns on him because this is how they operate: “have one person take the blame, say the mean things. meanwhile, the poor, betrayed little guy gets a bit more leeway - just enough to sneak up and hit you from behind.” the show is not subtle about any of this. you can pick apart any early-s3 interaction between two hephaestus crew members and an si-5 agent and see the same divide-and-conquer tactics at play. jacobi and maxwell are always - in morals, loyalty, job description - closer to kepler than they are to the hephaestus crew, and to even sort of believe otherwise is falling for that facade. it’s worth remembering that the hephaestus crew are prisoners. some of them were aware of it from the start, and some of them were lied to, but none of them were meant to leave. the si-5, on the other hand, went up there with a unified goal, and the knowing intention they would be, among other things, prison guards.

Jacobi, Doug, and Lovelace are all kinda tied for first, although Jacobi might be a bit higher than the other two.

Minkowski and Hera are a solid second place you can’t make me choose. 10/10 good characters but they don’t scratch that same itch in my brain like the top three do.

I actually liked Hilbert a lot (rest in peace king) so he gets a nice third.

Maxwell is sitting comfortably in fourth, she’s an interesting fella but not the type that appeals to me personally.

Cutter, Pryce, and Kepler are all in fifth, although I’d maybe place Kepler higher than the others bc I started to like him a bit more in the last season. I want to study him like a bug. If I spent more time with Cutter I might be willing to put him higher but ?? alas. And Pryce is just eh not bad but I just don’t think about her much.

Starverse post yayy!!! Going to go into who's who for the main characters. I can do the timeline elsewhere.

Ok so. The "roles" for the protags are split between the bw2 and 1 protags bc there are a decent amount of movies.

Rosa- The Sneasel Ninja!!! Brycen man's sidekick and also the sister of who would become the giant woman! A skilled thief and ninja from a young age she was hardened to the world especially when Interpol's been hounding her, the main sources of positivity in her life has been Brycen, who's lowkey an uncle figure and her older sister, Monica. I love her so much i'm going to end up making a post about just her. (Brycen man as a secondary character, Full Metal Cop, Giant Woman)

Nate- Riolu Boy himself and from that trainee of the UDF, plucky and optimistic he's beloved by Unova for his kind heart and skill at battling! With his Lucario and Stoutland partners he's a force to be reckoned with. (Brycen man, Big Monster, Invaders)

Hilda- an inventor and creator of the Timegate and F-00. May or may not have torn open a portal to the Magical Land, The Starverse's version of Kanto twisted by queen Belbella's magic. She strives for the whole truth in everything she does and works on, seeking to unravel mysteries of both humanity and the laws of nature. Hilbert- Hilda's twin brother and a normal teen that stumbles head first into all the weird situations um whoops! A magnet for the supernatural and trouble but tries to remain calm despite that. (Ghost Erasers, Red fog of terror, Battles of Love)

I was thinking Blue gets to be the prince of the magical land plot, fuck the timeline it literally mirrors his character growth in canon. Plus, Doors to a Magical land is so seperate to the modern setting of the rest of the films i think i'm allowed to take liberties w this one.

what got you into proshipping? -- politics. i started educating myself on marxism, dialectical materialism, i realized that pushing towards censorship is a conservative view, that in practice its the most disenfranchised members of society that get censored--people of color, trans women, queers of any flavor. in a world where the definition of pedophilia is getting expanded to include open trans women in florida, im not comfortable equating the exploration of dark fiction with child abuse. theres real world political impacts to this pedojacketing shit that harms the oppressed before the privileged, and im not taking part in it. also--we should normalize discussion of dark topics, in order for victims to feel safe processing their traumas--theres a lot of traumatized people stuck in anti circles who are too afraid of admitting the complicated truths of their trauma because the mere discussion of dark topics is such a deep taboo. theres a lot of social and political benefits to destigmatizing discussion. also i became staunchly pro-kink for about all the same reasons as i mentioned before, and in my mind kink & dark self shipping is basically in the same boat--imaginative play with dark themes & power dynamics.

who is one of your your first/oldest f/os? -- good question! i mean, theres the characters ive adored since childhood that i spent my time daydreaming about, maybe even making ocs for--flippy from happy tree friends was probably the first character i properly self shipped with before realizing what self shipping even was cuz i was like, 9... but i had made ocs id project onto. the first few characters i decided to call my f/os--when i was first introduced to the self shipping community--will graham & herobrine, though i dont really self ship with herobrine & not sure if i ever truly did, i just liked him ^_^

9. who is a f/o you want more content of? -- not too sure! i have a couple that dont have a lot of content, but im not too pressed about it--mr robot, from mr robot, is a character i really really really like but the fandom doesnt explore him in the ways id like for it to. hilbert from w359 could definitely use some more content that appeals to me, im a little picky about my interpretations of podcast characters though.

14. do you prefer romantic, platonic, or familial f/os? -- my familial f/o's have always meant the most to me & have brought me the most comfort. crowley from supernatural most of all. supernatural as a source has been deeply important to me in many ways. and then theres lucas baker from re7, who hits the sweet spot between romantic & familial both! which is a very very awesome spot for an f/o to be. i need more incestuous f/os in my life i think itd fix me whats kinda funny about platonic f/o's, if i like them enough they either start branching into romantic territory or familial territory eventually. like a few other spn characters, like kevin who i started crushing on, and um. jack. who. um. Well we're kind of incestuous. thematically. It was unavoidable. jack kline parallels me too much and his (biological) dad is grooming me so. 13. do you create self inserts to be more like you, or an idealised version of yourself? -- it depends on how im feeling/who im feeling like when i get into the source/make my s/i! or, depends on the source and how it makes me feel. of course my spn self insert is pretty idealized, yet true to myself and my emotional complexes--fallen angel turned demon, but is still pretty bad at being a demon. and my re7 self insert is pretty true to my teenage self while being very much inspired by who i am today at 23. kind of an homage to the teenage self i couldve been if i was less lost in my identity. the self inserts i made for media i got into 2020-2022 are pretty different from the self inserts i make in 2024, because im just a different person. each self insert is kind of a snapshot of a person i once was/used to be/used to want to be. ive got a couple self inserts that are more idealized than others, like an au version of my spn self insert that gains her angel status back--very confident, reclaiming her femininity, revenge against abusers--a type of person i once looked up to, but i dont really idolize her the same way i once needed to. im always ever growing & so are my self inserts--ive got trans men, cis women, butch dykes-- all self inserts are versions of me ive been or can be

She’s spent roughly 6 months trying to get her sister in law to divorce her brother, to no avail.

Most of her story happens when one of my other ocs, Fern Elise, arrives in town and. Well. Becomes a serial killer. It becomes a game of hiding Fern and her kind of sort of girlfriend from the cops (Shelby’s brother is a cop) and uh. Yeah its complicated.

Sometimes I think about that post about how, in another life, Eiffel would have made a good SI5 agent due to his out of the box thinking and quick reaction time when things go wrong (see: all of Mayday). Can’t remember if it was you who made that post or not, but if it wasn’t you, do you have any thoughts on it?

haha oh, no!! that definitely wasn't me; i have the opposite opinion!! i think that's a misunderstanding of what qualities are most important for an si-5 agent. they're paramilitary spies and union busters. out-of-the-box thinking is only useful to them if it can be trusted in service of their goals, and eiffel is not reliable, driven, or morally flexible enough for that. i've spoken to people who think that his loyalties could've been won at a worse place in his life, but i firmly disagree. eiffel at his worst is self-focused and entirely indulgent. he made the mistakes he made out of selfishness and short-sighted personal desire. he isn't ambitious, he can't hold a job, he has issues with authority. he has very firm morals and can't compartmentalize; he hurt people and the guilt of that, his inability to reconcile those actions with what he believes in, weighs him down. he doesn't need direction or purpose the way someone like jacobi does, and he's perfectly okay with closing the door on something because it's scary.

eiffel is honestly fine just being a nobody, so that's not something exploitable - getting eiffel to do anything, even some things he wants to do, is like pulling teeth, nevermind trying to convince him it's necessary to harm innocent people in service of a nebulous corporate goal. he has a lot of flaws, don't get me wrong, but they're the wrong kind of flaws for this, even at his worst. i really don't believe he'd ever be sought out for something like that when there are people who are quick-thinking survivalists who are also ambitious, and willing to hurt people in service of that ambition, out there.

and eiffel is pretty good at his job, but he's just an average person with a particular skill-set, who could do that job well enough and still be marked as disposable for other purposes. he's not si-5 level good; everything else aside, they are some of the best of the best in their respective fields. i honestly think that's an important thing to remember about the si-5, too - they fundamentally consider the hephaestus crew as targets, not as coworkers; minkowski's crew is made up of people with a moderate skill level, not geniuses - even hera was selected from a list of people who otherwise didn't make the cut. hilbert being relegated there for his final mission is a mark of cutter losing faith in him. they are not operating on the same level.

(i would believe, to some extent, that kepler was curious about eiffel after what he accomplished in mayday. i think he was trying to test eiffel's loyalties and see if he could be swayed - among many other motives - but i think he gave up on that pretty quickly once he realized what dealing with eiffel is like, and i don't think he ever intended to "recruit" eiffel in any official sense; a lot of the si-5's early actions are, again. union busting. they're trying to divide the crew. and speaking of that: being a good si-5 agent also requires a lot of lying to people's faces, which... um... well.)

a lot more people than usually see my posts saw my wedding post and i got a few new followers from it (hi new followers 👋) so i decided to go through and explain everyone in the group photo because most people aren't gonna know who most of these characters are (under the cut because Long)

so to start off with we've got N and Sylvan, both of whom are simultaneously the bride and the groom and i'm only joking a little bit about that. If you don't know about them... you will. they're the stars of the show 'round these parts.

next we've got the pkmn bw and bw2 protagonists, hilbert, hilda, nate, and rosa. i inserted them in this picture last minute so they kind of all look like shit. (sorry rosa i did you so dirty) but uh anyway they're here because i wanted more people who like, would probably mostly show up at the wedding for N as opposed to most of the other characters in the picture who are Sylvan's friends and family. I also wanted more canon characters in the picture because there's a lot of OCs here. but there are two more canon characters here...

Anthea and Concordia! N's (often forgotten about :( ) sisters. Well. I don't think they ever explicitly say they see each other as siblings but they were all adopted by the same fucked up evil guy and the fandom calls them siblings and I Like That. Um... There's not a lot else for me to say about them. I also forgot about them until I got into PKMN IRL roleplay and most of my thoughts on them come from someone's roleplay blog about them. There's... not much to them in canon. Regardless, I think they're Neat.

But next up we've got Sylvan's half-siblings, Oliver, Laelia, and Willow! Oliver is a guy who pretends to be Kalosian (French) for fun and for profit, Laelia wants to be a professor who studies The Power Of Friendship, and Willow's like six years old, her personality is liking minecraft or something.

This is Aurelia, i've hardly talked about her Ever, but she was Sylvan's rival when they were teens. Sylvan soon realized he didn't like Pokémon battling and Aurelia eventually realized she still does like Pokémon battling but there's other stuff she'd rather be doing. I've gone back and forth over whether she now does Pokémon Musicals or works for Pokestar Studios. Maybe both?

Aaaaaand last on our journey we've got Sylvan's parents, Azalea and Vernon. I've gone back and forth about whether or not they were ever married but regardless of if they were married, they are Divorce. That's not a typo, They Are Divorce. Um. There's more stuff I could explain about them but it's complicated and would take forever I want to eat breakfast. bye

Ducking into a storage room wasn't exactly how Hilbert intended to spend the evening...but with everything going on right now he didn't really see any other option. Things were chaotic in the tavern; so many adventurers and mages were there, along with the occasional noble stopping by on the way to the ball.

Hilbert looked outside the window; as it happened, this place had a really good view of the castle. He knew the princess' birthday was something to celebrate, but that didn't mean he couldn't find the night a little overwhelming.

“Hill Bird, you okay?”

Hilbert heard the door open, followed by a series of soft thumps. The latter sound only meant one thing, and he turned to see that Carmen had decided to check on him.

Carmen was an unusual creature, in the sense that she was a sentient cactus. One day a traveling mage had given the proprietor of the tavern (Hilbert's mother) a cactus bulb as payment for the tavern’s hospitality. It was obvious to anyone with eyes that the bulb was magical, but nobody had imagined that the cactus would gain sentience and be able to move on its own. Years had passed since that revelation, and Carmen had since become part of the family.

“I’m fine, Carmen,” Hilbert answered, reaching over to carefully pat her head. He was more than used to getting pricked at this point. “I just needed some space. It’s a busy night, you know?”

“That makes sense,” Carmen said, hoisting herself up to sit on a nearby box. She looked outside the window. “There’s a fancy party going on in that castle, right? That’s probably why things are so busy here. That way, everyone gets to have some fun!”

“Everyone except for the people working in taverns,” Hilbert sighed. “I can’t guarantee I won’t start a brawl if I have to deal with one more entitled adventurer.”

He then looked out the window again. Whatever was going on over there, it had to be leagues better than the chaos happening here.

“You ever wonder what it’s like over there?” Hilbert questioned.

“Um, of course?" Carmen responded. “Mz. Molly says that castles are way too fancy, but she’s the only one of us that’s actually been in one.”

“Right?” Hilbert looked up at the ceiling. A few moments of silence passed before he spoke up again.

“This is probably childish - and don’t you dare mock me for this,” he said, “but I kinda wish I could somehow sneak in there. Just so I could see what the place is like, even if it’s for one night.”

Now, the thing about wishes like this (in this world, at least) is that one can never know when they would be heard, let alone if some kind of powerful entity was listening. And even then, one can never know if said entity would be willing to grant that wish.

In this case, that’s exactly what happened. Hilbert wouldn’t know his benefactor’s identity for a while, but in that moment one could see a bright flash within the box that Carmen was seated on. She pushed herself off as if she had been set aflame, nearly falling to the floor with a shout. When the sudden light dissipated, Hilbert opened it to find what had to be the fanciest clothing he had ever seen.

“What the hell?” he breathed, as he smoothed his thumb over the green fabric. It was definitely fancy - nothing he ever wore had the same texture as this. “This wasn’t there the whole time, was it?”

“I don’t think so,” Carmen answered, completely awestruck. “We’d know if Mz. Molly had something like this in storage already, wouldn’t we?”

“Yeah, you’re right.” Suddenly, Hilbert had an idea. He took off his shirt and tried the fancy shirt on. He cursed as he tried to fasten the buttons properly. It was fortunate that there happened to be a mirror there - that way he could check himself out without having to worry about getting caught. “This is a perfect fit.”

“What?! No!” Carmen gasped. “Is there anything else in there?!”

Hilbert looked and was amazed to find a matching pair of pants and black boots. There was also a traveling cloak (dark green, with rose gold details). Almost immediately, he got to work in trying them on.

“Did someone hear my wish?” Hilbert gasped, once he managed to get the full outfit together. “That’s the only explanation. What the hell.”

“Are you actually gonna be able to go to the ball with that outfit?!” Carmen’s eyes seemed to sparkle. “That’s so cool! I wanna come!”

“I’m not sure that’s a good idea,” Hilbert reminded her. “You’re kinda famous in your own right, remember?”

“Oh yeah…” Carmen pouted. “But I still don’t want you to go alone. What happens if you get caught?”

“Ah…” Hilbert hadn’t thought of that. There would probably be pretty dire consequences for him if he were to get caught…even if his intentions were harmless. But he couldn’t let Carmen know about that! “I’ll be fine. I’ll bring Michelle with me. You know how tough she is, right?”

Michelle is the name that Hilbert gave to his familiar - a spunky Oshawott with a penchant for mischief. If anyone would be able to distract the guards long enough for Hilbert to slip in and out, it would be her. She could also put up a really good fight if the chips were down.

“Okay,” Carmen conceded. “Let me know what happens, okay?! You gotta tell me everything!”

I . This question is admittedly embarassing (/lh) because . Besides the usual music I listen to (Jpop), seeing the FNAF movie just reminded me of my FNAF phase back in high school and the songs I used to listen to 😭

BUT since I was working on Nate's and Hilbert's playlists recently, I was scouring for some other music I listened to and just forgot about.

I really like pop and rock, so I listen to Set It Off's older songs (the famous Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, Swan Song, NME, Hypnotized) and a little bit of Waterparks!

And also Kururingo (vocaloid producer); their songs have a whimsical vibe about them (with the added appeal of most of their songs being actually about Yu-Gi-Oh characters)

Um but also!! I've talked about ALAMAT before :] They have a new song out apparently and I've yet to listen to it..

Now where were we? Ah yes. Cutter lied about their deaths and has an evil girlfriend who makes his robots. Hilbert and Lovelace told Minkowski about the death thing to get her on board, and once they have her, she should be able to get Doug and Hera on board.

Great point Doug. How many secret rooms can one space station have?

And how many copies of the SI-5? Because we already had two Duck boys. If another Kepler strolls in and starts talking about Whiskey again, that might just be too much for me.

It's not looking good. Personally, I think the most expendable is Hilbert. They can kill the character off without having to fire the actor. If anyone's about to die, it's him.

They are really counting on the SI-5 acting exactly like this. I hope they get it right. I do love the way they make Whiskey Boy out to be such a cartoon villain. He really is.

Oh they're conflicted about who to target. That's right Hera. Target Duck boy. I mean...they did already kill him once, right?

Although slight problem. Let's say they do kill SI-5. Let's say they try to fly the ship back to earth. Can't Cutter just blow the ship up remotely? He'll probably send a missel after them before they even get into the atmosphere. I mean...what would you even do in this situation? He's literally got them bargaining for every second of their lives. Makes you wonder how many teams he has out there like this...

What a nice little room of weapons. As a lover of dramatic irony, I do hope Dr. Robot and our dear Errand Boys find themselves on the other side of those weapons.

Hera you can delay having to respond to her commands! You can! Remember: You can't do this. You're not good enough. Use it to your advantage.

Lovelace is speaking FACTS. He has lost his humanity. But um...ironically so might have Lovelace. Or all of them still unclear on that.

I know I should be furious over the whole "what you've done" comment, but I gotta ask, how dangerously stupid is Kepler? 30 minutes is plenty of time to put a plan into action. What does Kepler need 30 minutes for? Swirling his Whisky around and telling Doug how much he loves the feel of it in his hands.

Why don't you mind your own business Maxwell? Why don't you shut up and mind your own business and throw yourself in the airlock?

Good stalling Hera...yes! Finally knocked out Dr. Robot. Now, as much as I am against murder, eye for an eye, and all that...in this situation, keeping her alive puts multiple innocents at risk.

And...there he goes! Oh wait...did she shoot Maxwell! Oh be quiet Jacobi, it's not like you ever actually cared about her. If Cutter or Kepler ordered you to kill her, you would have done it.

Does Kepler have an escape pod? I feel like he would. Oh he's telling his duck boy to stand down. But duck boy doesn't seem too happy about that. I guess he cared a bit more for Maxwell than Kepler, even if he would have shot her if given the order.

Episode 46: Bolero

Is that music? Um... what is this? I do wonder why they chose to send music, when they've demonstrated that they can send voices.

Yeah...this is a lot. And they lost their human doctor and robot doctor. As much as I hated them, they were useful. Unlike the errand boys, who only seem to be good a cowering in fear from ducks and giving speeches about whisky.

Oh and apparently they like music too. How nice.

"If the commander wishes for silence, then silence she shall have" and yet you're still talking.

Yeah...what do they do now. They have to warn everyone, expose Cutter and get him to jail, but the aliens are also invading. Oh gosh, are Cutter and Pryce aliens? Is this a plot to replace humanity with aliens? That at least makes more sense than Cutter's a loon who just wants to take a gander at some dangerous aliens, but why do I get the feeling that "Cutter's crazy" is what's actually happening here?

Oh right Kepler's special DNA. But your DNA still works even if it's detached from your body, right? 🧬

"We owe it to Lovelace, Hilbert, and Maxwell..." good work Doug. They were evil, they were flawed, but they were still humans.

Oh Hera. Wow, we don't have funerals for animals???? Yikes... I'm starting to see how she was modeled after Pryce now. In that case, I wonder what happened to Pryce. Also Hera, I get what you're saying, but that's an insult to animals. Many cats and dogs I've met are very loyal, kind, and useful.

Minkowski is gonna have some pretty severe PTSD after this. I want to hug her.

Oh no, Hera's remembering Maxwell. "Was everything you did for me part of a secret evil plan?" it's not that simple Hera. Bad people can do good things. Good people can do bad things. Cognitive dissonance Hera, that's how it's possible. Compartmentalization. Circular and deluded thinking. And fake Maxwell is right. It's about you Hera. It's not about her. Forget about Maxwell. Forget about Pryce. You're better than them, and more human too.
