Under the Milky Way by The Church. A song analysis within Dead Boy Detectives.

I have been posting a lot about Dead Boy Detectives. That is because I am so in love with the show and the comics. This truly has been one of the best pieces of media I’ve consumed lately.

The most amazing thing about this song is that Kilbey, who wrote it, said this: "If someone says,'To me, Under the Milky Way is about the death of my budgerigar, and that's what gets me through, I go, 'Okay, then that's what it is.' If someone says, 'I think it means the Australian sky at night, I go, 'Good on ya!' If someone asks,'Is that about Milky Way Bar in Amsterdam where people smoke hash?' I say, 'Definitely.”

So it definitely helps to attach some ghosts to it.

Someone pointed out (sorry I lost the post :( ) that Charles didn’t actually reject Edwin and the reason must be because he may have never thought about the possibility of a romantic relationship between them. He always acts depending on how he feels and there he just knew he loves Edwin but he does not know if it’s romantic and

Is about Charles dying, They are both ghosts with Charles’ death so there is no one but it’s only ‘kind of empty’, ‘got no time for private consultation’ may be about Charles not wanting to take death hand and about how his time as a living being is slipping away, about his life being full of hurt life that should have been beautiful and was only a ‘loveless fascination’ but also ‘lower the curtain down all right’ sound very soft. Charles’ death wasn’t scary.

BUT

Wish I knew what you were looking for

Might have known what you would find

Goes with Charles not having thought about it and if he knew it was a possibility, If only he had known what Edwin was looking for he could have answered.

And it's something quite peculiar

Something that's shimmering and white

It leads you here despite your destination

And with that point of view, well isn’t it obvious ? What lead Charles in hell despite his destination [Heaven] ? What lead Charles under the Milky Way [on Earth] ? Well, it was love.

It’s quite beautiful how this song reinforces the fact that they may not have found the love they wished to find in life but they did in death. Life was a loveless fascination but death was full of love, shimmering like the stars in night sky. A light that will live long after their death.
