Prodigy Students
Tumblr media
(Since a certain Absol blog did it, I'm throwing my hat in the AU ring. These three are prodigy students of @harmonia-university! The trio only attend classes they're excel in. Oaken is a math specialist, specifically algebra. And Mouse and Grey are Battling students. After their classes, they go back to their dorms to study middle school level classes online. Mouse is very quiet and barely speaks, and when they do, it's low mumbling. But most of the time, they use sign language to communicate, or their hilt friend, Elizabeth. Grey is very protective over his friend Mouse, the two are almost never apart. Oaken attends different classes than his two friends, but still hangs out with them. He's not very talkative but he's very friendly.)

If the hero was crushed before the final boss, then who's going to rise up and defeat the big bad boss? Our minion Mask Kid, of course!
We test our platforming and rhythmic skills as we level up to defeat our boss in this RPG with colorful environments and characters to meet. Enemies consider themselves our allies, so let's hope the truth isn't revealed too harshly with Groovy~ sword crits.

Over the past two and a half years, I have amassed a huge backlog of games and extensively catalogued the ones I’ve played. It started out as a way to keep myself sane during the pandemic, but since then it’s basically just become the way I play video games. I’ve recently reached the huge milestone of 200 games played using this system, and to commemorate, I thought a list of “Each Zero Escape character as one of those 200 games” would be fun! Let’s go!
(FYI, I kept a tier list and for this post, I’ve only drawn from games I’ve ranked B, A, or S. So yes, these are all recommendations! I played some of them via itch.io, but all of them are available on Steam)
Ace: Contradiction
An FMV detective game with elegantly simple mechanics: you do exactly what the title says and it’s very satisfying. Special mention goes to the pair of shady businessmen you encounter who totally don’t brainwash, kill, or kidnap people wink wink.
Snake: Dicey Dungeons
This is almost entirely based on Light’s codename meaning “snake eyes,” but it was between this and that game you play by blinking so this seemed like the more appropriate choice. A cute and cheeky roguelike deckbuilder played by rolling and assigning dice. The fact that its gameplay is built around basic arithmetic gives me 999 vibes in general!
Santa: Tell Me Why
A choice-consequence adventure game from the makers of the first two Life Is Strange games (LIS2 my beloved, don’t @ me). Two siblings who can communicate telepathically revisit their childhood home and the events leading up to their mother’s death. One of the siblings is a trans man so if you are as Correct about Aoi as I am you know where I’m coming from.
Clover: Chicory: A Colorful Tale
The game where the world is a blank coloring book and you get to fill in the lines. Tells a lovely and relatable story about art, burnout, impostor syndrome and mentorship, although the main reason I’m assigning this to Clover is because it’s just plain adorable. The relationship between Pizza and Chicory also reminds me of her and Alice.
Junpei: Lamplight City
Perhaps aligned more with ZTD Junpei than any other iteration, this is a steampunk point-and-click about a disgraced detective who is haunted by his late partner and can’t rest until he’s avenged his death. The best part of this game is the protagonist’s awesome wife, who, unlike Akane, will actually help you with puzzles sometimes.
Akane: Elsinore
You play as Ophelia. You are stuck in a time loop and must find a way to save yourself and manufacture a happier ending to the tragedy of Hamlet. This is basically tied with Celeste for the title of my favorite video game of all time, and I was delighted to find parallels between it and Akane’s story.
Seven: The Darkside Detective
I love detective games so I had a wealth to choose from when it came to the cop character. I ended up going with this game, a standard point-and-click that is a detective game in name and theming only but is still a lot of fun. A pastiche of Twin Peaks and X-Files with some of the funniest writing I’ve ever seen in a video game, it captures Seven’s zaniness and willingness to believe in the supernatural.
Lotus: Beglitched
A glitzy and girly game full of computer lingo and in-jokes that go over my head. Thankfully you don’t actually need to know a lick of code to enjoy it because the hacking minigames all take the form of really unique and strategic battles.
Kubota: Underhero
An RPG with one of the most wonderfully convoluted premises ever. Put simply, you’re a villain’s henchman who must play double agent when you’re magically chosen to be the next great hero. Kubota certainly doesn’t fit the “secret hero” angle, but a whole game about an underling seemed appropriate.
Sigma: Milkmaid of the Milky Way
A point-and-click (can you tell I love those?) in which a dairy farmer’s favorite cow is abducted by aliens and she must sneak onto the spacecraft to rescue it. Now, that absolutely delightful premise could work with just about any VLR character; I don’t want to spoil the game, but something else does happen that rings very close to Sigma’s story specifically.
Phi: Downwell
I really expected Phi to get a platformer, with all her soaring and kicking! Downwell is kind of a platformer, I guess, although really it’s more of a free-fall simulator and most of the things you land on die. You can either shoot enemies with your “gunboots” or step on them to kill them - killing things with your feet, very Phi.
Alice: Paradise Killer
A quirky open-world detective game where everyone is impractically hot. I’ve truly never felt more like a detective than I did while playing this game, but you can’t talk about it without talking about the style. The world is bizarre, the music is all vaporwave, and again. You, the investigator, are improbably sexy, and so is every suspect you interview.
Dio: Cult of the Lamb
The cute and cozy roguelike where you start your own cult and smite nonbelievers. I feel like I don’t really need to describe this one further, y’all know it already.
Luna: Cloud Gardens
An art/puzzle game about helping plants reclaim an abandoned, decaying urban environment. Has both a story mode which I completed, and a sandbox mode I didn’t try in which you can just grow gardens to your heart’s content.
Quark: Carto
A really cute puzzle game where you manipulate the very ground you stand on using a map. The story is about a little girl trying to find her grandmother, so it’s very Quark in both aesthetic and story.
Kyle: Hades
The mythological roguelike about hating your dad a whole lot. I don’t feel like I need to explain this one further, either, as everyone has talked about it at length including me on this very blog, but I’ll have you know that I’ve played it for hundreds of hours and it’s solidly my third favorite video game of all time.
Carlos: The Rewinder
This is the most recent game I’ve played; I haven’t finished it yet and I can’t even say for sure that it will be top-tier in the rankings, but I’m really liking it so far and since I wanted a puzzle game about time manipulation for Carlos it was between this and Braid. And as far as I know, The Rewinder doesn’t have a creator with the absolutely rancid vibes of Jonathan Blow.
Sean: 2064: Read Only Memories
A visual novel where you solve a mystery in a cyberpunk world with the help of the world’s first fully sentient AI. The AI is a precious baby baby baby; if you love Sean, you will love Turing.
Delta: Evergate
A gorgeous puzzle platformer about the afterlife and a fraught sibling relationship that transcends time. I loved this game so much that I 100-percented all the collectibles and time trials, which is something I never do. Made me want to call my brother.
Eric: Boyfriend Dungeon
Of course, my much maligned fave gets paired with a game that also gets a lot of undue hate but nonetheless has my entire heart. It’s a dating sim for all of the thirsty simps out there that’s also a roguelike about literally attacking your inner demons and fears with crazy impractical weapons. This choice has nothing to do with a certain Boyfriend Dungeon character who gives all Erics a bad name.
Mira: Carrion
Going through all these games I was surprised that this was the only real “play as the villain” power fantasy on the list. You might have heard of this one described as a reverse horror movie; you play as a biological weapon, or an alien, or something, that has escaped containment and it’s just about eating scientists and soldiers in an explosion of pixelly gore.
Diana: There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension
I won’t be all coy like every other reviewer: this is a video game, a point-and-click about a sentient computer program who really does not want you to use it. It’s really funny and full of meta-references, but the reason I chose it for Diana is because this game is actually a tragic love story not unlike SigDi. I’m not joking about that.
And there you have it, twenty-two great games, one for each Zero Escape character. This is just a silly post but, sincerely, check some of them out if they sound interesting to you!

SO. UNDERHERO.
When i first heard you talking about this game, i was still kinda in undertale recovery so i thought jt was an undertale fangame but in a more fantasy classic rpg-style
Very clearly i was dead wrong lmao
I genuinely like the premise of a young mook killing the hero and taking their place, and the artstyle made it REALLY appealing to me! Then once i learned it was adjacent to the mario and luigi rpgs i was pretty excited!
The world is such a fun place, with the villain hq being like an office building and the other worlds are cool in their own way, especially the ghost world but I'm incredibly biased lmao. The characters are fun, too! Cereza especially was great, and of course i too love puzzleman lol
The gameplay is fun! The battle system is unique and interesting while still having a good ol rpg kick to it, and i love that! Though admittedly it feels weird that the game is so low level-oriented, i feel super weird about beating the final boss at level 16 lol
The music... had its ups and downs for me. Some songs were genuinely amazing, but others just kinda felt boring
Of course, the game itself isnt perfect. Sometimes it can feel kinda bland, they really didn't try with the pause screen and im not the biggest fan of the ui (the mask kid's mask staring at me in the upper left corner is... unsettling, imo), and i never really got over how floaty and mildly sluggish the game could be. Also the physics were weird. Also i don't really like world 3 all that much lol
But overall this feels like that game that you look at the box art of while at toys r us, beg your parents to get it for you, they oblige, and you adore it and wanna talk about it to your friends and they have no idea what you're talking about, and you feel alone in loving it until you go online and either find a bustling fan community or find out a big youtuber made a video on it and new fans are entering the series nonstop
....was that a long winded analogy? Lol
Anyways i can totally see why you love this game and while i don't think it'll effect my brain as much as it did yours, i had a great time with it and definitely wanna reccomend it to friends and stuff!
YEAHHHH !!! tho it may have had some ups and downs,, i’m glad that you ended up enjoying it overall!!!!
Tumblr media
also: yeah, i get that 😔,,, i also ended up trying to reload my save to see if there was anything else, but- alas.
apparently the devs are thinkin ‘bout making a sequel some time in the future, though! after they finish the current game they’re now workin on, that is,,,

Thinkin of trying to do my first stream next week, likely Wednesday or Thursday? I got Spring Break so I think this is the perfect time >:3
I've narrowed myself down to two games I wanna play, those being EverHood or UnderHero
Both are indie games I've have sitting in my game library forever that I've heard amazing things about!
A lil snippet bout the games for the uninformed, based on the Steam pages:
UnderHero is a 2D side-scrolling RPG adventure game. It tells the story of a world where the chosen hero has failed and an underling of the main villain takes his place as the new “hero”. Join Elizabeth IV and the little Masked Kid as they journey across the Chestnut Kingdom to defeat your evil boss, Mr. Stitches! Meet friends, foes and other weird characters in the mysterious world of UnderHero. The main gimmick of this game is it's a turned based combat system, but without the turns! Precisely timed actions are your most powerful weapons.
EverHood is an unconventional adventure RPG that takes place in an inexpressible world filled with amusing musical battles and strange delightful encounters. To put it simply: You are in for a ride. All thats given on the story is you control a wooden doll whose arm has been stolen by a blue gnome. The combat is seemingly rhythm and bullet dodging based with a great soundtrack to compliment it.
I will make an attempt to make these games accessible, especially those who are photosensitive. I know EverHood explicitly points out that there are accessibility settings in this regard, and according to DoesTheDogDie.com, there isn't any flashing lights, but there is "shakey cam." Regardless I'll look into the settings for both!
That being said....
If anyone wanna go give me a follow on my Twitch for the upcoming Debut Stream, here my link! :3
(also if u a mutual that wants to catch the stream and there's a day that works best for u lemme know I'll take that into consideration)

👀 💖 💬 for the underhero ask meme? :D
👀 How did you discover Underhero?
I learned about Underhero through Kyzer's Underhero let's play announcement years ago. And it was only recently that I had the money to purchase it.
💖 Favorite character?
My favorite character is none other than the underhero themself, the Masked Kid. Their journal entries really made me feel for them. Little bean just wants to be a hero, and I just want to them all the hugs and give them a treat.
💬Anything specific you want to say about Underhero?
I'm just disappointed that there isn't enough recondition of the game because it's such a good game. The game's plot is very good at making you thing one thing and just pulls the rug out from under you.
Just... Check out the game!

Chapter 4: Sneaking Out
Tumblr media
Back at the Chestnut Kingdom, Princess Cereza looked out her bedroom window with a crestfallen look. All she could think about was her friends she knew for a short time. She gazes into the sunset as if Mouse and Ellie would suddenly appear over the horizon. It's been months since their disappearance. The princess felt hopelessness clutch her heart. But she refused to let it completely take hold of her.
Some people would tell her that it was just a few days and to just forget about them, but what would they know? They weren't the ones who masqueraded as a masked kid to find the hero's weapon and wanted to battle Lord Stitches. Cereza thought about writing again to Mouse and Ellie, but she's started running out of interesting things to talk about, to her at least. And the unsent letters were starting to pile up.
She can't keep doing this... She can't keep sitting here and do nothing! Cereza then looks at her Grey Kid outfit. Feeling the smooth glass-like surface of the mask, made her get a sense of nostalgia. Oh, how she longed to go venturing as the mysterious Grey Kid again.
A knock on the door made the princess hid the costume in her closet.
"C-come in!" Cereza tried to hide the panic in her voice. The door opens and She breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Oaken walk into the room. "Oaken... Thank the gods its just you!"
"Yeah, I asked the guards if I could visit, and they told me you were in here." The brown-haired boy said. "What were you doing?"
"Oh, you know... Staring out into the sunset for what feels like years... You know, princess stuff!" Cereza grimaced.
"You're still thinking about them, aren't you?" Oaken frowned.
"It was that obvious?" Cereza asked. Oaken just nodded. "I just... I just feel so helpless. I want to help, but I don't know what to do..." Tears were threatening to fall, but she refused to acknowledge them. "I haven't felt this helpless since Stitches kidnapped me. Back when he was a puppet to that dice head..." She breathed out. A tear finally fell from her face. Despair started to sink in, but not for long. Her sad face shifted into one with determination. Like a fire started in her heart. Her mind was set! She knew what she wanted to do.
"I want to be the Grey Kid again." Cereza said with a firm tone.
Oaken just stared at the princess.
"I want to be the Grey Kid again." She repeated. "I know this is selfish, but I'm desperate to see them again. I never even knew Green Boots' name."
"So, when do you plan to sneak out?" Oaken asked.
"Tonight, you don't have to go if you don't want to." Cereza said. "But just know, you're not stopping me!"
"But what if I want to go with you?" Oaken asked.
As Cereza writes something, she pauses and turns to her friend. "Are-are you sure?" The dark haired boy nods. "Okay, while I'm getting ready, guard my door. Knock three times to warn me when someone approaches." Understanding his task, Oaken leaves the princess' room, allowing her to get changed.
Her gown neatly hung in her closet, and the grey hoodie took it's place. She always felt comfortable in it anyway, she's long since washed it. The red gloves and red boots fit nice and snug. Placing her crown on her desk, She hides her face with the horned mask. Finally her rapier, she always felt secure holding this weapon. Cereza checked the tip to make sure it was sharp. Princess Cereza was now the mysterious Grey Kid again.
After no warning knock, the disguised princess opened the door, and tapped Oaken on the shoulder.
"All set!" She whispered. Oaken followed Cereza inside. "Remember, not to call me by Princess Cereza when I'm like this. I'm just the Grey Kid, or just Grey."
"Got it!" Oaken nodded.
Grey tied his bed sheets together and threw it down his window for Oaken, since he doesn't have a hoodiechute like Grey. He looked at his unsent letters and decided to take the small pile with him, tucking them into his pouch. The Grey Kid sat on their window sill as Oaken got ready for his decent.
Just as Grey was about to take off, she heard her doorknob shaking, leaping off the window as quick as she could, as the door opened.
One of the knights looked around her room, looking for Cereza. Pulling the sheets off her bed, only to see a bunch of pillows that looked like a person was sleeping. He looked under her bed and desk, in her closet. "Princess? Princess!" The knight looked out the window as Grey hovered to the ground. "You! Grey child! Stop at once!"
You've got to be kidding me! Grey thought to himself. Thankfully, Oaken hid himself under the bushes until the knight looked away. Grey looked back, just in time to see the castle light up, and Oaken catching up to her.
"I bet you they think I kidnapped myself!" Grey laughed. Oaken smiled at that, and followed the grey kid into the woods behind the castle. The guards, although to far away to catch up, chased after them and split up.
