This is like, the first concept for a Final Fantasy Mettaton that I got honestly KJHGDSSD I might change this design? I don't really know what to do with an Idol MTT in the story yet, but it WAS my first idea (purely bc of FF10-2), so we'll see what becomes of this >:3
I want to show off Alphys and Undyne when I finish their own sprites :0 Alphys will be next just bc I haven't finished Undyne's armour concept, but I'm really liking it so far >:D

Trying to create Deltarune-styled overworld sprites for human characters is surprisingly challenging.
The thing about Toby Fox sprites is that they're so small. Undertale and especially Deltarune manage to get a lot out of very little.
That style works VERY well for cute monster/animal characters, which is why I'm REALLY happy with how my Morgana sprite animation turned out. Cuteness thrives on limitations.
But goddamn I wonder if Kris' constantly muted expression and always-covered eyes was a choice partially made because of this stylistic limitation.
I'm trying to give characters a positive, yet subdued expression, but because the space I'm working with is smaller than the default resolution of a Minecraft block, the expressions are always too exaggerated.
A character is either completely stone-faced or has a relentless smile, and the difference separating the two expressions is a single mouth pixel.

Outer Wilds - Owlk Undertale pixel animation - sprite update Process notes below - breaking down a sprite and how it feeds into my learning decisions:

I really liked this original sprite, at the time I thought it was really cool and captured the feeling I wanted to go for. With a sprite update, it's great to keep the original idea in tact. So going off of that, I wanted to see if I could make it more threatening overall and fix up some issues that were present. 1. Antlers This is a form and anatomy issue - based on how the antler is attached, it looks like it bends backwards, when you pair it with the left side, it makes the bird feel a little less scary. It clashes with the spikey, angular antlers and has a competing feeling. By turning the new antlers into a focal point, I exaggerated them to make them be extremely noticeable. It's wide, thick and intimidating. The big block of white draws the eye. This happens due to the size and the simplicity. The rest of the sprite has a lot more detail, so the thing that sticks out most is the least detailed part. You can achieve the same by reversing this, for example having simple clothes and extra detail around the head. 2. Left arm It's not particularly bad, it's just a bit idle and plain in comparison to the rest. I brough this in by rotating it, adding some claws and bolstered the intimidation by exaggerating the muscles. Checking for areas that don't really fit the mood is more of an emergent issue.
3. Feet Something that stood out was the weight behind the foot. I gave the sprite a grounded feeling. The issue was the shaky anatomy, since I didn't really know how to draw it from this front facing angle. I wanted to emphasise this weight factor, in the animated version the planted feet are the only static part. It's subtler in pixel art, but you can add a little bit of foreshortening to make it seem like it's stepping forward. 4. Ambiguous parts One of the most important things for pixel are is having a readable form. If you can read the silhouette when it's all painted in black, even when you add in details, it will really help keeping the form. I adjusted the mass so the bulk is now centered around this central torso and shuffled some of the leg positioning to be a bit clearer what is going on. 5. Right hand Hands are hard, sometimes it's about are you able to make it look passable, and it's ok. As you learn more things get easier, and you can start envisioning and making changes with intent instead of winging it. I went with a closed hand position, almost like it is grabbing, with this monochrome style it can be a little tricky to define form properly, or you end up with far too much going on. So I simplified this area with the power of suggestion to lift up this part. We can't explicitly see what it's grabbing onto, but that isn't necessary. This vague star shape moves in unison with the hand with a clutching motion, so we can tell it's holding -something- to imply a handle without explicitly drawing it.
6. Expression The face will make or break a sprite. You can tell SO much with just moving a couple of pixels. It's really evident when you are working with an iris on the whites of an eye, shifting it one pixel will change the entire vibe. In this case, I opted to simplify the whole head area, removing a lot of the dithering on the cheek and instead pushing the texture onto an elongated neck. I'll take on a reflection process after each piece to address what I like and don't like, making notes on what I should work on next. It's a really helpful exercise, especially if you can be specific as to what is happening with each issue. I'm a big fan of pixel art, the small canvas forces you to think about these things very concretely - it's using a magnifying glass to see which aspects are falling behind. So looking at this final one, I feel like I was compressing the torso a lot, and ended up with a much more compact design - which sometimes is the goal, especially if you're working within constraints for a game. Since I'm not working on it for a specific project, I'd then consider just using a taller canvas next time to allow more breathing room. My head is a bit more chaotic than this though. Pixel art let's me get those ideas out quickly - it's like thumbnailing or sketching.

noelle undertale style sprites
hi yall
ive been wanting to get better at sprite art (this was my news years resolution actually!) so i decided to try and turn noelle into an undertale style battle sprite!!
i also really want there to be some sort of light world battle at some point, in the undertale style! i think noelle would be a pretty good candidate for being the enemy of that fight, so thats another reason i made this
i feel like it couldve turned out better, but i also dont really know what i couldve done different, if that makes sense 😅
i was trying to make sure she wasnt too tall or short, so that was kind of hard to work around. plus, i love my girl noelle but.. she got a biggol head lol. if you count her hair shes like half head 😂😂. but i couldnt really do anything about it without making her too tall (i was trying to be as accurate as possible)
but, i think i didnt do too bad overall ^^
i also made animated versions!

ehh, im not too disappointed with myself, this is only what, my third pixel gif? im sure ill get better!! or at least i sure hope so :^
i also did those alternate faces/poses for fun, but i did them real quick, so dont inspect them too hard haha
if anyone has any tips or advice of any sorts to improve at pixel art, please share 🙏🙏 i struggle so bad at these, just being indecisive on every pixel i place 😫

CHRISTMAUS 2024 SUBMISSIONS

Today I am proud to announce ChristmAUs 2024! As you may have seen earlier, I have taken the reigns of ChristmAUs from @fmsdraws / @ut-poppy-askblog (with his permission). Unfortunately, I can not make a game like ChristmAUs 2023 (which you should really play Link here)! However, I do have a big plan for ChristmAUs 2024, and that plan is: Animated Christmas Card!

That's right! Unlike most of the other ChristmAUs collabs, this one shall be animated! Give your AU characters animations to bring them to life for all to see! Of course, animation is a hard, time consuming process. But with over 2 months to work, and with the simple rules on how the characters should be animated, it shouldn't be too difficult to get your character in in time!

RULES: *Submissions are open until Sunday, December 8th, 12 AM! Meaning that they are open through out December 7th and then they close! *Submissions must be in the style of Undertale and Deltarune! *No limit on the amount of characters you can submit, but I may ask you to slow down if I feel you are submitting too many. *The AU character(s) you submit must come from a publicly revealed AU that must have some content behind them other then this ChristmAUs. This includes: Art, Audio, Comic, Animation, Photography, Game, Sprites, Written Sources, or any combination of them. *No content that would be 18+. This is a family-friendly ChristmAUs! *No content that would be harmful or hurtful to anyone. ChristmAUs should be a joyous time, and hate and harm have no place in it. *No content that would violate the TOS of the majority of websites, including Youtube, Reddit and Tumblr. *You must have permission to submit the character, if you did not create them yourself! (UT and DR canon characters excluded; just link UT or DR for them.) Submission Rules: 1: Make sure you've read all the rules! 2: Give your Handle; how you want to be credited in the public. I do not accept anonymous contributions! 3: Share your characters name(s) and AU(s), along with link to the AU/those AUs! 4: Share your characters sheet(s); this should include every frame individually used for the animation, and I will add them in myself. Character Sheets should be 1x1 (meaning a pixel is just 1 pixel). Animations should be based on 12 Frames Per Second and Frames should be based on Multiples of 6! (6, 12, 18, etc.) 5: Share where you wish for your character(s) to be placed on the map. Keep in mind that while I will try to place them where you wish, I may move them slightly to fit the environment better. 6: Optionally, if you wish, include a GIF of the animation so that I can get an idea of how they should look in action! 7: Additionally, for those who can't animate, or for those who want to go above and beyond, there are also opportunities to add static content to ChristmAUs. These include: +Ornaments (20x20 max) +Gifts (30x30 max) +Table Set Pieces (45x45 max, 13 Max) +Pictures (30x18 or 17x18, 15 Max) 8: Characters should not be placed in areas that obviously would not fit them; like a massive character in a tiny area, for instance. 9: No walking animations, or animations that move characters from their standing point. This is to ensure there's no collisions and for a maximum amount of characters on the map. 10: All animations should loop into themselves. No animations should simply end. 11: All art submissions should include your handle/credit name!
