Y'know, it's kinda funny to me

Underfell was literally thought up on the idea "what if the monsters were evil?", yet I rarely see Underfell Sans/Red as part of Nightmare's Gang /the Bad Sanses.

Instead, if Nightmare's going to have a fourth henchman, it's normally Xtale Sans/Cross.

What does UTMV Stand for?

UnderTale MultiVerse!

UTMV refers to a range of Undertale/Deltarune (UTDR) fanworks. Not every utdr fanwork counts as utmv, such as if it's intended as an interpretation of canon– what makes them utmv specifically is if a work deliberately takes place in alternate versions of canon, such as alt. timelines (ex: Aftertale by @loverofpiggies), alt. universes (ex: Underfell by @underfell), outcodes (Inktale by @comyet) or crossovers between them (ex: Underverse by @jakei95).

Of course, sometimes it's more ambiguous whether a fanwork counts as an au or not. Because it's not always clear what could be canon-divergent, it just depends sometimes whether the creators associate their work with the utdr multiverse collective.

For example: on one hand, @zarla-s has called Handplates an au because, while supplemented by theories about canon, she likes including personal takes too. On the other, @/undertalethingems values faithfulness to canon and therefore prefers that Unexpected Guests not be counted as utmv.

Granted, utmv isn't the first fandom-in-a-fandom. Other fandoms have also had popular derivatives, such as Project: Eden's Garden, Vast Error and Voyakiloids. Some crossover multiverses are even their own franchises, like Kingdom Hearts and Spiderverse.

In this case, utmv's also a group collaboration within the fandom. Etiquette and permissions still apply, but the overarching lore is built and sustained by the community. Which means, there's always some flexibility, but there's also details that are widely agreed upon or widely debated. There's a list of alternates everyone knows, like the above and more, and some of them have been the foundations of its worldbuilding, such as CORE!Frisk by @dokudoki.

If you don't know where to begin, watching Underverse on Youtube is a good way to get introduced. Some characterizations may be unique to @xtaleunderverse's own canon, but every alternate featured is credited so you can view creators' posts to learn more about them or check for permissions regarding their usage. (You can also go to the pinned post on @utmvarchive, run by me, to look up alternates. This is recommended for aus credited to dead accounts, as utmvarchive was made in an effort to protect them from becoming lost media.)

How exactly does the Overwrite work? I mean I get that we'll be able to see eventually what it can do at its full strength in later episodes of Underverse, but I'm more concerned about its relationship with the multiverse as a whole. Think about it. Through context clues, we can infer that what's happening when someone is Overwritten is that their code is being temporarily hijacked and -in more severe cases- being entirely rewritten. This also go for timelines that are also made of code. Makes sense. But for the Overwrite to be as dangerous as it's shown to be, everything has to be made out of code. So what happens when someone tries to Overwrite something that's not made of code? There are some universes that are more organic than others. Without a doubt Something New is a code-based timeline, it even has a player modifying the code in a pseudo-Overwrite to make Killer (which is also an interesting point within itself), but what about Dreamtale? Dreamtale is just a world that was moved into the UTMV by chance because Nim was looking for a place to hide the Tree of Feelings. Is Dreamtale made of code, or are its inhabitants made of DNA and a true Soul? If we consider Dreamtale is also told through the perspective of a fairy tale book, could you argue that Dreamtale's world is made out of text as apposed to code? Does this mean that Dream or Nightmare are immune to the Overwrite? Or does the Overwrite work regardless? Could Dreamtale be immune to corruption or by extent destruction from other code-manipulating outcodes like Error or Fatal? You could make the argument that an AU is not inherently made out of code unless stated or a player is showcased. Would the Overwrite work on them too?

Am I thinking too hard about this? Yes. Yes, absolutely.
