the connection is that, just as bones and all invokes cannibalism as a loss of control and an uncivilised (or pre-civilised) behaviour, the film is also structured around a road trip whereby maren's search for answers about her own cannibalistic nature necessitates an expansion across the us, specifically in the western direction away from the east coast. the midwestern us (and westward expansion generally) thus appears in the film as a site of greater freedom, self-knowledge, and eventually also as a place where maren and lee can settle and try to prove themselves in their new homestead. however, moving west also means danger: maren's initial goal is her mother, who turns out to be insane (both represented and signified by cannibalism), and of course their apartment is also the place where lee eventually surrenders himself entirely to death and maren's hunger. thus, westward expansion and settlement frees the characters from the strictures of the social norms constraining their 'eating' back east, opening into a frontier fantasy in which their more base, bodily desires can run wild yet ultimately end up destroying them.

this combines elements of established colonial discourses on both cannibalism (as a primitive, 'savage' practice of 'uncivilised' and inferior peoples) and usamerican westward expansion (it's for a similar reason that, eg, lots of space colony concept art depicts the transplanted landscapes and biota as generic north american national park-looking scenes). cannibalism in bones and all has a few different specific metaphorical meanings (addiction; 'mental illness' broadly; homosexuality; passion broadly; &c) but what unifies these things thematically is that they are all configured as threats to, and threatened by, social life in the heart of 'civilisation'. eaters are necessarily pushed toward the social margins, living as vagrants or criminals, and the film's main narrative requires maren to move westward in particular in order to shed the restrictive rules imposed on her when she lived 'normally' (within social bounds) with her father. obviously not all usamerican road trip narratives involve cannibalism, but this basic setup of westward expansion + settlement as a journey of self-discovery and escape from (restrictive elements of) society is common to the genre and generally to usamerican 'pioneer' mythology and ideology.

yeah sure! it's a post-canon au of the Shade Lord ending. the setup is that little Ghost's fight against the Radiance goes differently and ends up with the unified Shade Lord getting significantly injured and weakened, even though they (plural they btw. it's like every vessel's conciousness in there) do win in the end. Ghost has the most control as the Unifier, but other vessels are not completely silent. they, in fact, insist on returning to the Void Sea, and getting their eternal rest. Ghost doesn't disagree with the idea, but it wants to give peace to it's sibling, the Hollow Knight. it wants to get them to join the Shadow and decend into the Void Sea with everyone else. so the Shade Lord, now called the Shadow, is trying to get their physical body dragged up towards the Black Egg Temple by Ghost, and to the Void by oretty much everyone else. the Shadow will have a lot of technically internal conflict about this

meanwhile the Hollow Knight, now free from the Radiance's influence, is found by Hornet and taken to Dirtmouth. like many AUs, she takes care of them and tries to help with their injuries, both physical and mental, to varying degrees of success. the Hollow Knight, now nicknamed Holly, is still very paranoid. they are afraid they are still living in Radiance's illusion. just as they are about to get better, they see a strange shadow lurking in the corners of the village. the swirling dark is of odd familiarity, which scares them. eventually they manage to look the shadow eye to eye. a horrid guilt washes over Holly, as they are reminded of the sibling they betrayed all those uncountable years back. and the Shadow stares back, and they both are sure who they are looking at. Holly runs away, spiraling from fear, terror, paranoia. is the Shadow going to hurt them? are they here to seek revenge?

Thinking about how broad and interdisciplinary my project is and the kinda of things I have to be familiar with or an expert in. I get down on myself sometimes for progress but looking at all the shit I've learned.... Without formal classes or a senior grad student or (for the majority of it) no post doc. And a PI who can't help bc she's really a business lady at this point not a professor. Maybe shouldn't be hard on myself?

Like. I did completely different projects in undergrad (biotech/proteins/genetics/regenerative medicine, advanced manufacturing/composite fabrication/CNC/welding/process statistics, translational neuropharma studies of addiction/rodent handling and operant training and behavioral video analysis/neural tissue slicing n staining/hand making neuroelectrodes for implantation, design and fabrication of impedance spectroscopy based electrochemical sensors/automation of sensor fab and use w a micro fluidic flow cell)

Like. Since I've started I've learned:

- how to do multi-step air-free water-free chemical synthesis (with glove box and schlenk line) and purification (extraction, filtration, chromatography) of light sensitive amphiphiles (extra tricky)

- how to get and read NMR even for massive fucking molecules and interpret weird peaks (I can casually see if I've got water or any of my common solvents contaminating the spectra without referencing a table at this point)

-how to fucking take down and set up and fix everything in our chemical synthesis lab (because we moved and all our shit was abused for years) and all the intricate non-unified and sometimes conflicting rules for hazardous chemical storage

- I already had cell culture experience and did some adherent and suspended cultures, some live dead imaging assays, etc, but I've learned new facets like how to go about picking electrically exciteable lines (ease of growing? Also stuff like what commercially available live imaging dyes can I compare to or complement my visualizations with or use for colocalization studies (other lipophilic membrane dyes that insert in the bilayer with preferences for diff order regions? I need to learn a little more about microscopy (especially FLIM and how to build a polarizer module into the scope we have for polarization microscopy), and a little more about the state of the art for voltage dyes and live-imaging dye characterization but man. I think I'm getting somewhere. I'm starting to know enough to see the end of this project and pick my directions moving forward and argue when my PI is wrong

well, I am back to reading the Exestential Crisis manga. Perhaps I should read it some other time that isn’t my birthday, but it’s a tradition at this point. After all, I am an artist. And not the professional kind. Which is what I went to school for.

Blue period is a very good manga. There’s a lot of research that went into it, but you can also tell how much of the author’s own feelings go into the manga. I will probably write a review on it at some point. This one is a bit harder for me to process than some others, because of the story’s subject matter. I will say that the thing I miss most about reading it is the way it describes the process of making art, and the revelations of the main character regarding the nature of art.

I have a feeling that Blue Period may play a large role in my life. I’m not sure yet. I know that it will change me, somehow. Every story changes me a little. Eventually, I think, the more one reads, even manga, the better one becomes able to understand the nature of the world around them.

What do you really want? It’s a question that many people are asked, and very few know the answer to. For the main character of Blue Period, what he wants is to satisfy his curiosity— he wants to know- what is art, really? His advantage is that it’s his sole motivator, and he has no pride in his work, only a ceaseless drive to unravel that answer.

Maybe that was my mistake, going into art school with a very set, predefined notion of what “art” meant and was, one very different from everyone around me.

There’s no one or easy answer to the question of what art is. What people consider to be art varies widely from person to person, from country to country. And yet there remains a few defining parameters consistent across cultures. Art is a human creative endeavor, one that seeks to convey an idea or meaning; not something purely decorative (which falls into the realm of design, or illustration.) Art is fundamentally a means of communication. I think this is where I first became confused in art school. For me, the meaning behind art had always been secondary to its appearance. Art was a practice in intense reproduction from my mind’s eye; a practice of generating imagery from nothing in particular, something that had many details and could provoke thought, a wide array of thought that fell mostly into the realm of fantastical. Art was about generating ideas. Art was about all of the leaping off points, not necessarily about a unified and set message.

Art has no “practical” purpose. Instead, it serves an ideological one, telling you what the author believes about the world, maybe how it is, maybe how it should be, or how it has been. But it always has a central theme that, if not immediately discernible, can be recognized through the text in the artist’s description or statement. Art is about reflecting society, and reflecting ourselves.

Maybe it’s no secret why I have had such a love hate relationship with art. Unlike Yaguchi, I was not curious about what art could be. I thought I knew. And as my fundamental drawing professor taught me, when you think that you know how something looks, you will always draw it inaccurately.

And yet, art does interest me. When I can pick the questions that it asks, on my own terms. It’s difficult to justify art to oneself. It shouldn’t be. Creating art is a fundamental tenant of human self expression. Art is who we are.

I’m rambling and it’s late. I guess my point is, you can’t understand something unless you are willing to be curious about it, and really open to receiving answers in the form of information that you really didn’t expect. You have to be openminded.

You have to be willing to see art in unexpected places; in places where it wasn’t intended, where there was no human controlling the setup. The things that you personally recognize as art, which serve no artistic purpose originally, define your perspective and define you as a person. This is what you, as an individual, can utilize to make art.

art belongs to everyone. But it can only belong to the people brave enough to reach out and grab it. It belongs to those who want it, who need it. So it belongs to those who don’t create it, too. But the only art that you can claim as your own is the art that comes from your unique perspective; something built off of self reflection and in direct communication with the world around you.

And art is not about creating something; it’s about trying to get at something else, and creating something in the process.

I guess I never understood that before.

The scene where Yatora draws himself naked, and then learns that he sees his body, and the human form in general as pathetic, made me realize that it’s really easy to not know what your perspective even is until you are in the midst of reaching towards art.

I found it hard to think of art as a language, but it very much is. Once I started thinking of art in the same way I already think of writing, I believe that my art began to improve.

I think a lot of this series is Yaguchi learning, bit by bit, that traditional art is a tricky union of skill, technique and intent, trying to combine the three in perfect balance— and often failing in one capacity or another. That’s what makes the series good; it’s realistic. Most of artwork is a failure in one way or another.

I could say so much more, I could probably sit here and type until tomorrow dawns about all of the things this anime surfaces within me. But I’ll leave it there for tonight.

Blue period is a very good series about asking oneself some very hard questions, without ever really having a guarantee of an answer— but continuing to ask regardless. And I, like so many others, admire that determination.
