Okay, you know what's fucked, Instagram often advertises bands to me, but they almost never promotes bands with majority Black bandmembers or Black lead vocalists until recently when I started following Action/Adventure's account, and now they've recommended like 3 to me in the past few weeks, as if Black-fronted bands are categorized differently algorithmically and only promoted if you already show interest in bands with Black artists??
Anyway, here are some current rock-, punk-, and metal-adjacent bands with Black artists to go follow and support (I'm bad at genre labeling but I tried, don't @ me):
Action/Adventure - catchy pop punk
ALT BLK ERA - dancey rock/pop
Sleep Theory - rock/metalcore
en MASSE - chill metal/nügaze ffo loathe, deftones
Magnolia Park - a little flavour of everything
Arcadia Grey - emo/punk, I just think they're neat :)
Buggin - high-energy hardcore/punk/noise rap
Kaonashi - emotional, raw hardcore/metal
Soul Glo - hard-hitting hardcore/hip-hop. Come to dance, stay for the lyrics
UnityTX - hardcore/metal/hiphop
Upchuck - punk/hardcore/grunge you can't not dance to
Radkey - fun, catchy rock
Pressure Cracks - unrelentingly high-energy hardcore (vocalist is Jason A. Butler of letlive.)
Meet Me @ The Altar - rock/pop punk
156/Silence - hardcore/metalcore (one of my all-time favorite bands. Their bassist, Lukas Booker, who was on their three most recent releases, recently unexpectedly passed away, go give their music some support ❤️)
Pinkshift - punk/pop punk
Loathe of course, metalcore/nügaze heavyweights
And in case this is your first time tuning in, Turnstile
Let me know who I missed!
#Not the usual#Off topic I know but I have a modest following and this is my only platform where anyone somewhat listens so

UnityTX - Ferality
Over the next few reviews, I wanted to talk about some albums from last year that I didn’t get around to, and they all have a specific theme — nu-metalcore. Over the last few years, both nu-metal and alt-metal have slowly crept back into heavy music, and it’s fully back now. I haven’t really listened to a lot of hands in this vein that I really liked in the past couple of years, but last year, a handful of bands put out some solid nu-metalcore albums. I’ve been listening to some of them this past week, because I’ve been looking for some bouncy, groovy, and energetic nu-metalcore. The first band, and my favorite one, that I wanted to cover is UnityTX’s proper debut album, Ferality. I’ve been aware of these guys for the last handful of years, but they’ve only put out EPs and singles from time to time. I remember hearing bits and pieces of Ferality last year, but I never listened to it in full, and I’ve been wanted to check this out.
I’m really bummed I waited so long, because man, this album would have been one of my favorites of last year. This is such a fun, energetic, intense, and diverse album that showcases a catchier side to the band. This thing is only a half hour long, but it packs a huge punch. I will say that if you’re expecting nothing but nu-metal bangers with a sick and bouncy groove and breakdowns for days, you’ll be disappointed. This album runs the gamut between a lot of different sounds, including nu-metalcore, hip-hop, industrial, and more straight up alt-metal. Every song on this album is different in its own way, and I love that about this record. It has a good sense of variety, so when the album gets heavier, it feels more earned than if every song sounded the same.
Every sound works quite well, too, especially when they move into a catchier sound. Part of that is due to vocalist Jay Webster being able to adapt his vocals to whatever he needs to, whether it’s a nu-metalcore banger like “ROC SH1T,” “Rotting Away (Gore),” or “World Of Malice,” an industrial song like “Diamond Diez,” a hip-hop cut like “Lost In Dayz,” or even a Disturbed-sounding cut like “Killing Alchemy.” Webster sounds just like David Draiman on that last song, and it’s a cool Disturbed song they never wrote. The instrumentation helps, too, though, as the performances are quite good, and the album never gets boring or dull.
I don’t have any issues with this album, but I can see people being upset that the album isn’t “heavy” enough. There are some awesome breakdowns, and some really heavy moments here, but they feel earned, as opposed to bands whose albums sound the same and the breakdowns don’t hit as hard. The first couple songs and the last few songs are the hardest hitting ones, so the album starts and ends really heavy. It’s the middle that tries to stand out and do something different, but it works quite well. I wish I would have heard this album last year, because it would have been in my top ten, possibly top five. This record absolutely rules, and if you love 90s and 00s nu-metalcore, you’ll love this album.

Sitting To Know Your Collection October (24) Round Up
______________________________________________________________

Sitting To Know Your Collection: Week 41 (October 7th - October 13th)
Album: Madboy (2019) by UnityTX Play Count: 2 and some change. Top 2 Tracks: - Ruckus (Track 1) - Piece Of Mind (Track 6)
This one hit the spot as soon as I put it on. Sometimes one just needs heavy music that you know was meant for the melanated hard core folks. I’m not a fighter but listening to this on my way to work really gave me the right kind of attitude. Some tracks were better than others, but overall I’m just saying that I had a good time with it.

Sitting To Know Your Collection: Week 42 (October 14th - October 20th)
Album: Songs About Jane (2002/2003) by Maroon 5 Play Count: 3 Top 2 Tracks: - The Sun (Track 6) - She Will Be Loved (Track 4)
Say what you want about the modern version of Maroon 5, but “Letters To Jane” Maroon 5 is not the version to be mad about. (Generally speaking, I don’t know the 2003 lore and don’t want to know lol.) Anyway it’s more sensual and more jazzy than I remember it being. It’s a a solid vibe in the background, kind of album. Another one that is nice to revisit from time to time, where you’re not going to hate having it on or at least I didn’t.

Sitting To Know Your Collection: Week 43 (October 21st - October 27th)
Album: Acoustic Volume 2 (2018) by Bayside Play Count: 3 Top 2 Tracks: - It Don’t Exist (Track 3) - I Think I’ll Be Okay (Track 10)
I’ve been trying since Steven’s Untitled Rock Show to get into Bayside and finally found a song that I really liked. When this CD was on its way to be recycled, I decided to take it and give the rest of the album a solid try. I will say that it ended up being better than I thought it would be, however I still gravitated towards the track I knew and loved, more so than the rest of the album. Overall the albim was rather decent and I’m glad I gave the band a better shot. Don’t know that I’ll reach for this one often, however it does make me want to try their Acoustic Volume 1 record to see if I’d be into that one as well. You know, just to see.

Sitting To Know Your Collection: Week 44 (October 28th - November 3rd)
Album: Jonas Brothers (2007) by The Jonas Brothers Play Count: 4 Top 2 Tracks: - Hold On (Track 2) - Kids Of The Future (Track 14)
I spun this album on the wheel picker right after I had just got done binging Camp Rock 1+2 a day or so prior, so it very much fit the moment. I had a lot of fun with it, granted that was before they were joking around on Twitter with the bad folks hahaha. It also works as a soundtrack for me trying to beef up my DCOM DVD collection. Just fun high school pop times, no pressure.

Alpha Wolf - Half Living Things
I’m going to be honest — I don’t have much to say about Alpha Wolf’s new album, Half Living Things, and I didn’t want to review this at first. Not because I didn’t like it, but because I just don’t have a lot to say. There just isn’t much to talk about with this album, and at first, I only listened to it once then kind of wrote it off. I decided to come back to it, because I hate writing things off after a single listen, even if I end up not liking after subsequent listens. I was also in the mood for this band’s brand of nu-metalcore / deathcore, thanks to listening to a few other albums in this vein.
I listened to albums by UnityTX, Gideon, and Dropout Kings, so Alpha Wolf’s new one is the last album out of all these that I wanted to talk about. Half Living Things is a record that I don’t have a lot to say about, because it just isn’t that interesting, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. After a few more listens, I don’t really love this album, but it’s not half bad. If anything, Half Living Things is a nu-metalcore album that is full of nothing but breakdowns, grooves, and really heavy moments with a feature from Ice-T for some reason, all the while being really generic.
If you like this kind of stuff, or you want to turn your brain off, you’ll be fine, but otherwise, I just don’t have a lot to say about this record because there isn’t much to talk about. That’s kind of why I wanted to end up talking about it, because these are the kinds of albums I wanted to avoid when I started writing again. It’s hard, though, because I still want to talk about certain things, especially if they’re still good. It’s just a conundrum that I’ve had for awhile, but in the end, I like talking about music. I may not have a lot to say about something, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t worth checking out.

i'm just going to put my current hyperfixation songs, and a little explanation why i'm liking them rn
romanticist by yves tumor - this one's on my little stargyle playlist, i immediately thought of them when i heard it. it's like the exact mood i want to capture later on in the series i'm working on.
show me how by men i trust - from my fluff writing playlist, this one i've had on repeat while writing the back half of my christmas fic. it's got the soft and gentle vibes i really want to shine through, and is perfect for writing because the vocals are just far back enough in the mix that i'm not distracted by the words.
burnout by unitytx - aaaand this is where the soft stuff ends lmao. this band opened for loathe a couple weeks ago (my all-time fav) and they're so so good. i feel this song in my soul lmao. their music has hiphop influences as well, and there is always a need for more poc representation in metal
bleeding by varials - bassline is so fucking sexy
how long? by tallah - made me cry in my car first time i heard it. really hit me right in the transgender, though i'm fairly certain justin wrote it about being gay. a song for queer people to cry to in general, i think, in a full-of-rage, when can we just exist without fear kind of way. beautiful, beautiful song
as always sorry if you've been tagged already/don't like to do these! tagging: @himbohohoharringtxn @skeletoneddie @heroeddiemunson @bayouteche

I think a lot about how emo was seen as a safe haven when I was coming up cus people could dye their hair and wear skinny jeans without getting a bunch of shit, especially little girls and little gay dudes. And you know, all props for that I think that stuff should exist. But it was still a bunch of white dudes. Even the ones that weren't white were either super white passing or had assimilated into whiteness to get their shit off the ground (I didn't know Pete Wentz was mixed until last year, dude. That's how bad it is.)
A lot of them were still just as racist as the Metal dudes I was prone to hanging with on the internet, but I guess cus their demeanor was more that of gangly white twinks who were constantly playing up their victimhood rather than beefy white dudes who played more assertive roles, no one took it that seriously. The former party was performing a layer of innocence and humanity that the tough guys couldn't be afforded, even though both parties should be held accountable an equal amount for being shitty white bitches.
Tbh I honestly kinda prefer when the Metal and Hardcore dudes are racist to me, just cus 1) their music is better and 2) they at least do it with their chest. There's cool Hardcore and Metal dudes too, but at least when they're uncool they're like, fucking nazis, and they tend to congregate at shows for bands who are also nazis, or at least complacent, so they're much easier to avoid. There are also just way more black / nonwhite fronted Metal and Hardcore bands (UnityTX, Sunami, Los Crudos, Body Count, Soul Glo, Zulu, and District 9 are some of my favorites) cus we've been having this discussion about racism in Heavy music for like 22 years now. The issue is far from being solved, it's at least clear some people kinda care.
I don't think I can say the same for emo. As far as I can tell it's still just as white dominated as it was when I was in middle school. Hard pass.
Hanging with white queers is a struggle cus they're like "come to this space it's diverse and more accepting and safe" and what they really mean is "the same amount of white people but a lot of them are gay or at least gay passing this time."
#I'm sure a lot of my gay friends feel similarly when I invite them to shows by black fronted bands and the crowd is all straight dudes#but idc. You can find Cracker Nation anywhere. Get out of your comfort zone.

UnityTX
Madboy
Number of LPs: 1
Label: Pure Noise Records
Release Year on Jacket: 2019
Songs I Liked:
A2 – Hail Mary
A4 – Cross Me
All of Side B
Overall Rating: A+
Would You Recommend:
I was not prepared for this album at all. This was part of a mystery bundle, and I assumed it was a hip-hop record by the cover (I'm not fully wrong). The first song came out swinging with a hard metalcore edge. This felt like the band was influenced by 90s newmetal and hardcore. Randomly it goes from this hard aggression into melodic hop-hop tracks, back to full on rage. This was surprising. The back and forth doesn’t take away from the album it actually flows better than I could have thought. This is why I do these mystery bundles, because you find gems like this that I never would have heard of before. Even if you don’t like hip-hop or metalcore I think this is worth a listen. This was a great listen.
Don't take my word for it listen for yourself and tell me what you think.

Live Review: Deez Nuts, The Acacia Strain & UnityTX at The New Cross Inn, London (01/02/23)
It was The Acacia Strain’s night in London, that’s for sure.
Originally due to take place on March 1st, 2022, and at The Underworld, the last date of the UK portion of this tour finally took place, 11 months later and at The New Cross Inn. It’s a sold-out show and anyone who’s ever been to the New Cross Inn during a sold-out show can attest to the manic insanity that takes place when it’s this packed. Hardcore punk band Deez Nuts may be the headliner, but…
