My grandson used my #urbanintellectuals Volume 4 Black History Flashcards and located this card. He said, "Jeddah, you said Santa Claus is not real. But this card proves that he is real and that he is Black!" Black History Fact... . . Uncle Tom was originally a character from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1852 novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. . And also interesting is the man that Uncle Tom is believed to be largely based on, Josiah Henson. . . Uncle Tom was a man who refused to beat black women. Uncle Tom was a man who refused to tell on other slaves. Uncle tom was a man who would put cotton in other slaves’ bags at night, so that they wouldn’t get beat! Uncle Tom was a man who helped 100 slaves get free long before the underground railroad. Uncle Tom was a man, that once free, established the 1st Laborers school for other fugitive slaves! . . His name? Josiah Henson! Josiah Henson was an author, abolitionist, and minister. Born into slavery, in Port Tobacco, Charles County, Maryland, he escaped to Upper Canada in 1830, and founded a settlement and laborer’s school for other fugitive slaves at Dawn, near Dresden, in Kent County, Upper Canada, of British Canada. . . So stop calling these sell-outs Uncle tom! That’s a compliment! Uncle tom is a man to be respected. . . . . Paraphrased from @urbanintellectuals . . #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #josiahhenson #uncletom #uncletomscabin #harrietbeecherstowe #abolishionist #cotton #civilrights #blackpower #blackexcellence #blackman #strongblackmen #strongblackfathers #strongblackman #becauseofthemwecan #urbanintellectuals (at Black History Month) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8rkqOlpFC7/?igshid=1qnf5qsnu435e

#Repost @urbanintellectuals • • • • • Let’s be clear. To achieve this going to take a bigger effort than someone just “choosing not to commit a crime.” . This is a charge on all of us as a people. Not only her in America but globally bc we are going to need jobs, mentors, education, internships, travel opportunities, parenting lessons, legal counsel, psychological counseling, group economics, political unity, support, love, encouragement and two thousand other things not mentioned. . For us to boycott prisons, it’s going to take all of us bc obviously there is an entire global system fighting to kill us. . My question is do we love each other well enough to finally work together instead of just bitching and morning about what someone or some celebrity isn’t doing. . All of this! . #urbanintellectuals #weloveus #blackhistory #blackunity #blackpride #blacklivesmatter #blm #prisonindustrialcomplex #schooltoprisonpipeline #hiphop #blackculture https://www.instagram.com/p/B2S82VoDnM3QulvBu-_pJdlmXzYmaFhij9gDU40/?igshid=1obmohn9vizeq

Reposted from @urbanintellectuals - Dethroning Oprah Winfrey as the richest black woman in the world, Nigerian fashion designer turned oil financier, Folorunsho Alakija, is worth an estimated $7 billion. She began building a fortune in the 1980s with the development of a successful fashion design and tailoring company known as Rose of Sharon House of Fashion. - As the company gained momentum, Alakija began making connections with prominent individuals in the Nigerian community including the wife of former military president, Ibrahim Babangida. What may have started as a casual transaction became an opportunity to gain wealth in one of Africa’s richest natural resources, crude oil. - Alakija applied for an oil prospecting license in 1993 and upon acquisition of the license, her company- Famfa Limited-was granted the right to explore for oil on a 617,000-acre block of land just outside of Nigeria. - As of 2015, she is listed in Forbes Magazine as #87 on the Most Powerful Women List and she is the second of just 2 female billionaires in the entire continent. - In an effort to empower the community from which she came, Alakija launched The Rose of Sharon Foundation. The non-profit organization helps orphans and widows through the provision of scholarships and grants, a philanthropic venture that will not only add to her own legacy but will spark that of Alakija’s fellow Africans. - Tag 2 friends who need her story in their life #urbanintellectuals #BlackLivesMatter #BlackEducator #BlackEducators BlackTeachersMatter #Changingthenarrative #Blackhistory #Africanhistory #History #WorldHistory #Blackexcellence #Blackhistorymonth #AfricanAmericanHistory #CivilRights #CivilRightsMovement #unapologeticallyblack #BlackPower #Blackconsciousness #BlackAndWealthy @WarriorSoulJah (at El Paso, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/BytM1WLndc3kOU1yNsS0tCy-Q83nQ_DmDpm6W00/?igshid=1vc4rl8otjqnu
