I believe that Sanae doesn't want to be called grandma by Ushio because since Nagisa's dead and this is her daughter, it would mean that her child really didn't make it.

It would make it all real.

She's grandmother, and Nagisa is dead.

She's in Denial.

She said it herself.

She had to raise Ushio.

she couldn't waste time on anything else nor lose herself.

She's hard on her because she doesn't want her to end up like Nagisa.

Her little girl died for Ushio, to have her, to make them grandparents. And from being so happy...she would now give away the role of Ushio's grandmother in order to be Nagisa's mother again

Today's entry feels like a kind of calm before the storm. Lucy's dream is especially terrifying given the circumstances, but she seems to not quite understand the significance of it, nor does Mina really have anything to go by. It's like that episode of Clannad After Story that ends with Tomoya naming Ushio, and the shaky promise that Tomoya and Nagisa will be together, always.

Fans of Clannad are probably already shedding a tear or two because they know what happens in the next episode. It's 24 minutes of a downward spiral where illness returns and claims a life, smashing a season and a half of hope.

I think we're getting the same sort of thing here in Dracula. The storm is approaching, just like the evening the Demeter appeared offshore.

40 Day Anime Challenge Day 33- An anime you loved but will never watch again: Clannad and Clannad: After Story (2007-2009)

Trigger Warning: Mention of domestic violence

Synopsis (by me): Tomoya Okazaki is a sadboi delinquent with a heart of gold and a tragic backstory who helps a bunch of cute girls and some other friends overcome their tragic backstories. Eventually, he settles down with Nagisa Furukawa, who keeps getting held back for missing school due to chronic illness. In After Story, they face tragedy after tragedy in the adult world. Everyone hurts.

Ok look, I know I talk a lot of shit about Clannad. And the truth is, I really love it; I really do. It’s a fantastic anime with a great story, a whole cast of amazing, fleshed-out characters, beautiful artwork, and so many sweet feels. And I love an anime with good feels. But there are some things that fuck you up so bad you never want to face them again, and Clannad is one of them. That show was like an abusive boyfriend who beats you up and then is super sweet like “baby come back I love you so much” and he makes you forget why you ever wanted to leave and then he beats you again. That’s what Clannad felt like. (And don’t @me for making light of dv; I’m writing about my own past relationships here and if I want to make jokes of my own trauma as a coping mechanism that it my prerogative- not my fault if you didn’t read the trigger warning.) At least with Clannad I had the sense not to go back for more...took a few more mistakes to learn with the boys but I finally did!!!

FUCK I’m in a Clannad resurgence and like,,,fuck man, Tomoya is so sweet to Nagisa. This boy is a delinquent (and skipping school may be a LOT bigger of a thing in Japan, bc why is he a delinquent, other than that?), dealing with a grieving and alcoholic father; and yet the second he sees her, he’s captivated. There is not a single truly unkind word that passes between the two of them. He helps her rebuild the drama club, not because he cares about drama (but he knows a lot of different kinds of plays (surrealist??) so ig he likes learning about the arts?)) but because after a single day of knowing her he cares about Nagisa.

Tomoya is depressed. This is clear from the first line of the show, “I hate this town.” The first episode is in monochrome until the moment Tomoya and Nagisa lock eyes. Even if he doesn’t realize it, the narrative is telling you that she is his color. She is his light.

Upon rewatch, I love to see the first season as Ushio’s understanding of her parent’s relationship in high school. I love seeing it as the story she was told by Senai of how her parents got together. Or even from Tomoya himself. It’s not confirmed that’s true, obviously, but I enjoy it as a personal theory that doesn’t hold much water.

again .. people who hate the magical realism and the fact that it allows for an ultimately happy ending to this story are such annoying babies .. the magical realism guides this show and serves to further its theme of love as a force that changes you for the better … not to mention it’s all based off a visual novel with multiple endings and the true ending IS the happy one lmfao .. like shut up
