use ask meme replies as starters. if starter calls stress you out, encourage your followers to send memes instead! that way you can pick and choose which meme suits you best, searching for the little sentence prompt in your inbox that most inspires you in the moment. at the same time, not every ask meme reply needs to be continued. sometimes they make better one-shots and drabbles, and that's okay! as long as you and your writing partners are having fun creating and telling stories together, that's all that matters!

as someone who has used a cane for over 2 years now ive noticed a really interesting bias against canes by able bodied people in comparison to other mobility aids. when we were at the same college my roommate used forearm crutches and i had my cane, and it became a joke to us how much more helpful and accommodating people were towards him (of course still overall bad- but better). the main example we always talk about is that people would fall over themselves to help him with doors, even to the point that it would get inconvenient (like trying to open the door to the accessible bathroom for him but in the process standing in the bathroom), meanwhile people would let doors shut on me without batting an eye. he started using a cane recently so i asked him about if there was a difference in how people treated him and he said there was a noticable difference and that people were less eager to help him when he was using it in comparison to the crutches. i have a few theories as to why:

1. most canes you see in media being used by someone who isnt elderly are aesthetic canes, and so people dont take it as seriously if a younger person is using one

2. unlike a lot of mobility aids, canes are one handed, which gives the illusion of an extra hand free. what people dont understand is that yes, while i do have an extra hand free, i am using that hand double time since the other one is occupied. also a lot of things require two hands (especially for someone with a disability) so doing everything one handed can be tough. i use my dominant hand to hold my cane since my pain is worse on my left side, which means that the hand i do have free isnt one i can use to type things in or write, so if i need to do that i have to put my cane under my arm and use my right hand

3. canes are taken less seriously as mobility aids since to an able bodied person they dont look as severe, which gives the impression that cane users are more capable than other mobility aid users. while yes, it is true that canes can be a starter mobility aid that will eventually be traded for another type as symptoms progress, that doesnt mean that canes are for Disability Lite. me and my roommate used our mobility aids for similar reasons and have had very similar pain experiences, we just used different aids. canes are also a significantly cheaper option compared to other aids and are easier to find in stores, and so are much more accessible. besides all that though, there shouldnt even be a bar for how disabled a person needs to be to recieve help, which id argue is a very controversial opinion to have anymore

4. canes are still a joke. they are still widely used as a funny prop to indicate that someone is old, incapable and feeble. even on tumblr i still see people utilizing canes in this way in artwork and memes, and thats obviously very alienating. mobility canes arent props, and you probably should not draw someone with one unless you actually intend to have that character need it

in my short 2 years of using a cane i have already faced so much ableism, most of which has come from young left leaning people. of course theres a wider issue of disabled people being the odd group out in the effort to stop bigotry since literally everyone will punch down on us. there are also certainly privileges to using a cane compared to other mobility aids. but its also incredibly strange how invisible they are, like people forget that i have one for a reason

Writing gives me the time and space to gather my thoughts. I use it as a practice in conveying emotion, which makes it easier to do so and thoroughly explain reasoning. I use writing as a base for learning human psyche, soul, mind and spirit which interests me deeply. I try digging deeper into feelings and actions - reasons why some are done and linking them together.

I pick muses based on some hint of personality trait I see of myself in them. I find myself often asking what I want so having muses that at least correlate to my thoughts are a better fit for me than just a choice at random. It can be big as the way they think or it can be as small as sharing a favorite drink. Exploring their interests based on their world and adding on to it makes it way more enjoyable for me to write, story and world building is important to me.

I fucking love everyone I have ever written and will ever write with. This has been nothing but a warm and loving experience for me.

Zero dude. Literally none. I just picked it up as a hobby and passed my blogs one year birthday last august. I have been truly active in the writing community for only half a year in total.

I go with the flow, I enjoy coming up with things on the spot. Diseccting my muses and throwing them into any type of situation just to write myself out of it. Or-... make it worse for them. Keep it interesting you know?

I write through and together with music, I let it guide me often. This is kind of the reason I am a slow replier, I have to really feel what I want to put down and then I can stick to it. biography.

Padmé Amidala Naberrie is a human senator of the Naboo people. Before being senator, she was an elected Queen, until a new one took her place. She is passionate about her politics and for protecting her people. Even after she is no longer Queen, Padmé does whatever she can to keep the peace, even if that means her own life is at stake.

💖 welcome to raine's stupidly-long guide to starting tumblr rp! 💖 qualification: i've had this blog for 11 years. fml disclaimer: still all just from my perspective, i'm just one gal with opinions hehe

start out by making a new blog for your character. (i wouldn't recommend starting out with a sideblog personally, since you can't send asks from them). choose a url that feels relevant. i'm always a fan of the ol "smush two words together that sound nice" technique — ie, my other blogs are huntershowl and icarusplunged — which never seems to fully go out of style. really you can do whatever feels right to you :)

the most important part of setting up an rp blog is creating a rules page and, if you're writing an OC, an about page. the rules set up your boundaries, your wants and don't wants, anything you want someone to know before they follow you. the about page should give new partners everything they need to know about your character — personality, appearance, setting/lore, any backstory you want to display publicly.

feel free to look around at different rpers' rules pages and use them as inspiration! as long as nothing is copypasted and everything is your own original content, which brings me to etiquette.

etiquette!

'tis largely an Unspoken Thing in the rpc (rp community), and breaching it can def make people feel uncomfortable (even though that's something that Should be in rules pages, most of us forget haha). here are the things i can think of off the top of my head:

the way to reach out to new people is simply to follow them. that's all you gotta do! if they don't follow back, don't push, just unfollow them after a few weeks and move on. it's almost never personal!

in that vein, if someone's blog is private/selective/mutuals-only, wait to interact until they follow back.

once they do, it's up to you how you want to move forward — usually i'll wait until they post some sort of interaction call for you to like. a starter call, a plotting call, orrrr if they reblog an ask meme (which is like a list of sentence prompts! you can choose one from the list and send it as an ask, which they can use as an rp starter.) you can also just IM them though :)

don't reblog non-rp content (ask memes, quotes/imagery, etc) directly from another rp blog, it clogs up their notifications! just reblog from the original post instead.

don't interact with other people's threads (liking or reblogging, but feel free to read them and talk about them ooc!), and only respond to a starter if it's labeled as open — otherwise it was probably written for another rper specifically.

try not to prod people too hard if they haven't responded in a while. some folks are okay with being reminded about a forgotten thread a few weeks after replies stall out.

always tag nsft (not safe for tumblr, the other acronym gets flagged/hidden) and very upsetting content — gore, SA or abuse mentions, etc. i've seen some people starting to use "dead dove do not eat" as a catch-all for super dark content, but honestly that phrase gives me the heebiest of jeebies so i prefer to go with individual tags

general platformless rp etiquette rules apply: don't steal other people's content, don't assume or control the other character's actions/thoughts/etc.

be kind to each other, most of all. communicate when you have a problem with someone, rather than making a vague/callout post about them. that being said, i'm a proponent of the block button — blocking people is okay! it's not a big deal. this is a hobby space and no one is entitled to you. advocate for yourself!!

now: RP STRUCTURE (the fun part)

we don't really do "script" style rp on tumblr — it'll usually, if not always, be in prose/paragraph form. formatting is a fun touch, but not necessary. as you can see, i'm using small text here with some little chunks of text in bold/italic or regular size text to add some visual interest. again, not necessary! experiment, figure out what you like!

lots of people will use icons of different sizes — 100x100 is the most common, but they really do vary. i would suggest going smaller rather than bigger (like don't use full post-width gifs or icons, try to keep them under half the size of the post? that's the most common vibe at least.)

icons can be used to "illustrate" your character's expression among a bunch of text, if you want Visual Spice. but they are soooo not necessary! totally up to you.

to reply to a thread, reblog it and add your post.

important: i highly recommend downloading and installing XKIT in your browser. it's an extension that lets you trim posts to the last two reblogs (common around here), customize your blog experience, and just makes it a lot easier to exist on tumblr haha.

What are the trends when it comes to writing that you adore?

I have to admit, I'm pretty behind on trends but I'd say I like seeing whenever threads or other muses are reference in threads - it adds a sense of continuity and it's a fun way to give a little wink and a nudge to old interactions and threads like paying a small homage. Another trend I like is whenever there's no set sense of continuity - like your interactions don't have to be linear - you can jump around in time, it's something I do with @chibitantei's Naoto a lot - we'll do threads early into our muses meeting and where they don't know each other as well but we'll also have threads much later down the line where they've built up a friendship and feel close enough to go shopping together or exchange birthday presents, for example.

What’s something you find weird on here?

I don't know about on here as a whole but I always think about a mun that I used to know who was really insistent that people had to come to her first - for interactions, for talking, for anything and I guess I just don't really understand that way of thinking because while you might get some interactions, if you just expect everyone to come to you and initiate things with you, it can start to feel like strange - like I dunno, I'd feel pretty turned off if I was the only one initiating things and I always had to be the one to message them, make starters, send asks, etc - and what really gets me is she'd also complain about having no interactions and it just felt strange to me because you can't have it both ways - you can't expect everyone to come to you and also expect lots of interactions at the same time. People want to write with people genuinely interested in writing with them and nobody wants to do 100% of the work.

What’s something you wish to improve?

I'd like to improve on actually reaching out and following through regarding my permanent calls - I want to send more memes out, reach out to other muns more - make more open starters - any sort of way of pushing myself out of my own little introverted comfort zone. I don't ever want to be someone like the mun I mentioned above - someone who gets complacent and waits for interactions to come to them and I genuinely get that people may have their reasoning for wanting to be approached instead of approaching - maybe it's bad experiences, maybe it's social anxiety, maybe they're really really shy, but I feel like to a point you have to reach out and put yourself out there and although it's still scary and nervewracking as hell, it never does quite get easier, but reaching out to others and showing that you're interested can take you so far because it shows other muns that you're committed and you're interested and you're willing to put in the work, too.

Hey guys, I wanted to say thank you for being so patient with me and to let you know how things are going in general.

I knocked my head against some chairs last Saturday but overall I seem okay. I think I need a fucking helmet at this point though. Lol Theo and Salem are checking on me often. Thus far, we're in the green.

Writing overall comes and goes because my night meds make it hard to focus once I take them and I generally take them around 4pm on work days. By this I mean, I normally can no longer make pretty sentences and my focus is non-existent. I just wanted you to know.

Since smacking my head in August (the concussion), writing has been difficult in general. It's hard to remember things and to keep track of threads. I struggle to write to my usual standard and my ability to stay on task and focus is nearly shot. I have good days and that's when I get lot of stuff done but lately it's been spotty at best.

I wanted to apologize for that.

I have been drawing so much because it's easier and by that I mean less straining on my brain. I don't have to look down to draw like I would traditionally and I don't have to think very hard to keep a scene going - I can just color and think about art things like lighting and toning and stuff. We've cut it back again to try to get some palette memes done because that is stopping my brain from having to think about what colors to use by limiting the palette I have access to.

All in all, I'm generally okay but there are still a few lingering things that focus, memory, composition, etc that are straining. I get neck flares every now and then and my migraines are worse than they were before but my preventive med is still generally doing it's job.

But basically, I'm saying I know I'm taking forever to write back to things and I'm not engaging as much as I used to and I am not pumping out posts like I used to but just please know it's not that I don't have interest.

On top of all this, it is an extremely hard time of year for me so depression has been HIGH. I'm working through it. It's no one's fault. It's coping with Dad's death around the holidays. (he died in '18) It's just this was Dad's time of year so everything reminds me of him. I swear it's not you guys.

Guys the concussion is gone but the effects are lingering. Writing is hard now and I hate it. LOWER ACTIVITY WARNING !

Starting from next week, my free time will be drastically reduced compared to how things have been in the last few weeks. I won't be around much, so this blog will probably become more low than moderate activity, depending on my work schedule.

✧ i have two corgi's ! the oldest is woodie, he's 3 years old. he's more auburn, kinda tanned colored. he's got his own little personality that's so interesting to see sometimes. we got him after our family dog died suddenly, so he holds a special spot for us. the second one is dena, named after my 91 yr old grandmother. she's 1, about to turn 2, and more tri-colored: mostly black, the white chest/feet, and some tan on her eyebrows and nose ! she's a little love bug who wants to give her sister (me) kisses all the time. she makes me v happy, like woodie. they are my 'siblings', but also my kids lmao.

✧ when i was born i was 3 months early. so, a premature baby. i was so small that i weighed a pound and 2 oz. so small that when i was born my mom asked why there was a cat in the operating room and my aunt said 'that's not a cat, baby, that's zandie.' i stayed in the hospital for over a month and a half before i was able to come home.

✧ i live in a small, deep south town. i am, what the internat calls, the ya'll people. lmao. i always wonder if, to internet friends i talk to, my accent is noticable or thick in any shape or form.

((It's changed.... so much.. I started RPing on Tumblr back in 2013.. Firstly-- the only way you could tag people is by the tags in the tag box. You had to TRACK your tag to see who sends you starters. Good luck on finding stuff if you have a - in your url cuz you CANNOT track that.

Also greeters were VERY common, and muns usually greeted multiple people in one starter. Which was VERY nice cuz it could get some interactions going quite quickly.

Also call outs were NOT a thing. There was a LOT less drama due to no call outs really being a thing.

People interacted way more and it was a LOT easier to interact. People would send in memes all the time to me when I made blogs. Reblog karma was a lot better too, cuz back then you couldn't reblog from the source.

Also you could use Tumblr WITHOUT xkit or any ad ons.. Miss that SO much but Tumblr has fucked so much with the site you cannot operate it WITHOUT xkit or something.

Idk. I miss the days of just RPing my brains out and not seeing any drama on the dash and just having a variety of RPs to respond to.

What is your biggest insecurity in writing? My writing being out in the open for literally the entire world to read and judge me by, thus, me hoping my writing is good enough where people don't look at it and think it's awful. Actually, this used to be such a massive fear of mine that I refused to write on forums and on tumblr because I didn't want so many people just having access to my writing, I wanted things 1x1 in message-platform. Today? I'll likely never ever do message-platform writing again and I'm confident enough to be on here, BUT... That don't mean I don't still worry about it lolll

Do you prefer magical or mundane characters, why? MAGIC!!! My life is mundane, if I have to write it too, just yeet me into the sun. I want as much magic whatever as I can possibly get, I want everything to be totally unrealistic and crazy and non-human and non-normal life. You will literally never see me write a normal human character.

Do you believe that characters can be redeemed? It depends on the character. There are some characters in movies or tv shows that are literally so... So, horrible, that you just want them to be killed off. Like when their face shows up on the screen you're just like, ffs, someone kill this mf. So for those types of characters, no. For characters that are "villainous" for reasons, they have well-fleshed out backstories and all that, and you can just tell there's so much more to them than this bad shit they do, ya know? Especially those that you legit like waaayyy better than the "hero" "good guy" characters. Those guys? I'm rootin' for 'em.

What’s the most difficult thing about being a multi muse blog? Having a lot of muses but only wanting to / having a ton of muse to write one or two of them. I know a lot of people obviously follow for certain muses so, I feel bad when it's a muse that I have verryyy low writing motivation for. Not that I don't write replies as quickly as I am able to or anything like that, I don't yeet them under the bus or anything, it's just, I very much pick favorites when it comes to my muses and I can't help it.

What is one advice you wish you could give to multi muse blogs? Well, one thing I've told myself recently actually... And I love it so much?? Because it just works so well for myself and other people who follow me. I've changed my rules around and, if people don't specify my muse when they; like a starter / meme call or send me memes / questions in the ask box... That's my opportunity to just, choose whoever I want to write, and it makes it easier for people who want to just quickly throw some stuff my way without worrying about having to look at the muse list first and whatever, just, yeet, and I'll do what I want. If they ain't happy about the muse I've chosen to give them, that's 100% on them and if they knew they wouldn't be happy with certain muses be chosen, then they should have specified one, two or three names. I highly recommend it, to be honest, because I love it.
