The 20th annual Gabriel Gathering tonight in the reclaimed Shockoe Bottom African Burial Ground. “We gather to honor Gabriel and all those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom; to celebrate more than 20 years of learning the history of this sacred ground; and to rededicate ourselves to reclaiming and properly memorializing Shokcoe Bottom, once the epicenter of the U.S. domestic slave trade,’ Ana Edwards, Chair, Sacred Ground Historical Reclamation Project. Free Bangura, founder of Untold RVA and Untold, talks about her group’s art installation, “Gabriel’s Ascension” (3rd photo). Queen Nzinga offered a Libation Ceremony while J. Ron Fleming poured water on the ground (4th photo). Pamela Bingham, a direct descendant, was one of the speakers tonight (5th photo). Kwame and Shayola Binta hug while listening to the speakers (7th photo). The event featured speakers, music, spoken word and art installations that included “Raising Shockoe Creek”. @jaypaulphoto #richmondmag #rva #history #vahistory #reclaiminghistory #gabriel #untold # (at Richmond African Burial Ground) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjjsaJ1ueCV0wtL5OSVi6w_FcKbF6sKFOoZuek0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The reconstructed kitchen cabin at Booker T. Washington National Monument in Hardy, #Virginia. Booker was born on James Burroughs Plantation, possibly in 1856 (although there is no official written record other than the recorded birth of a male slave on April 18, 1856). Booker lived with his mother, Jane, the plantation cook; his brother, John Henry; and his sister, Amanda. They slept in the kitchen cabin. When the #CivilWar ended, Booker was freed and wanted to pursue an education, which he was denied as a #slave. After moving to Malden, West Virginia with his family to be with his stepfather, he worked in a salt furnace and coal mine. He learned how to read and write and eventually worked for the Ruffner family. In 1872, Booker went to Hampton, a school for African Americans. He graduated from the school in 1875 with honors. He later went on to open the Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama. #va #vahistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #nps #nps103 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #explorevirginia #FindYourPark #bookertwashington #bookertwashingtonnationalmonument #nationalmonument #monumentsforall #smallparksaturday #blackhistorymonth (at Booker T. Meditation Rock
Here Mary Ball Washington prayed for the safety of her son and country during the dark days of the Revolution
This tablet was presented by the National Mary Washington Memorial Association (chartered February 22, 1890 - February 22, 1962) by whose devoted efforts this monument was erected and this site maintained.
And you can bet that, after her devotions, Mary Washington never threw beer bottles off this rock. She always made sure to carry them home with her.

Here's the answer to the last post! Modern day Leesylvania State Park was once called Freestone Point. In 1955 entrepreneur J. Carl Hill purchased Freestone Point with hopes of building the largest resort town on the east coast to compete with Atlantic City! The ship in the background of the last picture was the SS Freestone which Hill docked at the point. Gambling was legal in Maryland and all Hill had to do to open a casino in Woodbridge was to park a boat in Maryland waters. Due to pressure from VA lawmakers Hill closed up shop by 1957. #history #pwcounty #vahistory #woodbridge #703 #dmv

The dining room at @maggiewalkernps located at 110½ E. Leigh Street in the Jackson Ward neighborhood of Richmond, #Virginia. The site was designated a @nationalhistoriclandmarknps in 1975. The National Historic Site was established in 1978 to tell the story of the life and work of Maggie L. Walker (1864-1934), a pioneering African American businesswoman, civil rights activist, philanthropist, and the first African American woman to serve as president of a bank in the United States. The home was built in 1883 by George W. Boyd, father of physician, Sarah Garland Boyd Jones. Ms. Walker purchased the house in 1904 and moved into it in 1905. After Walker's death in 1934, her family remained in the home until it was transferred to the @NationalParkService along with its original furnishings. #va #vahistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps102 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #exploreva #architecture #oldhouselove #maggiewalker #maggiewalkernhs #nationalhistoricsite #jacksonward #blackhistorymonth #interiorthursdays #richmond #richmondva #smallparksaturday (at Maggie L. A bedroom at the George Wythe House at @colonialwilliamsburg in Williamsburg, #Virginia. The house is believed to have been designed in the mid-1750s by George Wythe's father-in-law, the surveyor, builder, and planter Richard Taliaferro. George Wythe was the first professor of law at an American college and the first Virginian signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1776, the house accommodated Virginia General Assembly delegate Thomas Jefferson and his family. Washington used this house as his headquarters before the Siege of Yorktown in 1781. Colonial Williamsburg acquired the property in 1938. The property was added to the @nationalregisternps and declared a National Historic Landmark on April 15, 1970. #va #vahistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #colonialwilliamsburg #williamsburg #williamsburgva #architecture #archi_ologie #georgian #georgianstyle #exploreva #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #ushistory #americanhistory #historictriangle #loveva #virginiaisforlovers #oldhouselove #RevolutionaryWar #yorktown #nationalhistoriclandmark #nrhp #interiorthursdays #findyourfunwmbg (at Wythe House) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtUflYklAQG/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=o0umv0uityam

#throwbackthursday In June 2017 I visited the @historyisfunorg sites in Yorktown, #Virginia. My first stop was the brand new Museum of the American Revolution, which opened earlier that year. This is part of the outdoor component to the #museum with a farm and Continental Army encampment, which helps visitors fully immerse themselves in the period. #va #vahistory #SpreadTheHistory #BeRevolutionary #historyisfun #historygirl #yorktown #yorktownva #RevWar #americanrevolution #revolutionarywar #militaryhistory #americanhistory #ushistory #exploreva #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #loveva #virginiaisforlovers #historictriangle #theworldturnedupsidedown (at Jamestown Settlement / American Revolution Museum at Yorktown) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo0DyAehLlF/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=itup9ibab0zv

Did you know that #GeorgeWashington owned a gristmill (pictured) and a distillery? In 1771 he built a large stone #gristmill to increase production of flour and cornmeal. A hired miller, assisted by enslaved millers, ground more than 275,000 pounds of the highest quality “superfine flour” each year exporting it to the West Indies and Europe. In 1797, Washington hired a Scottish plantation manager who encouraged him to build a whiskey distillery next to the gristmill. This distillery was the largest in America and produced almost 11,000 gallons of whiskey in 1799. The reconstructed buildings are located at their original site three miles west of @mount_vernon. The #mill was rebuilt in 1933 and the distillery in 2007 on the original foundations after extensive archaeological research. This photo is from a trip we took there in 2014. #va #vahistory #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #historygirl #roadtrip #igersva #exploreva #SpreadTheHistory #architecture #archi_ologie #reconstruction #mountvernon #stone #mountvernonva #virginiaisforlovers #onlyinvirginia #travel #history #americanhistory (at George Washington's Gristmill) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bn2LyCchgIf/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1wwtm7f2xuf0e
