Since the Pook are benched for now, I'll try posting commissions twice a week instead! That'll keep me on an even keel, and I've got so many right now that it'll keep me busy for a good while.

This first one is for your friend and mine, Val Salia. He likes to make crazy critters too, and his trademark race is the Yinglet, inhabitants of his ongoing comic, Out-of-Placers. I've mentioned it before, and again, I highly recommend it! They're zany as Hell, man. Like Muppets with sharp parts. Excellent stuff!

There’s been a million webcomics that start with a man getting magically transformed into a woman, and they handle that concept in wildly different ways, but I’ve never seen a comic do what Out-Of-Placers is doing, which is to leave it almost entirely unacknowledged for 200 pages before having the protagonist go “Hey, wait a minute” and then submit a report to their boss about it. And I really like that angle, not least because these reports force Kass to do some self-examination, but also because rather than being a fairly direct expression of the author’s own semi-latent transness or a fetish comic, it’s in service to Out-Of-Placer’s real fetish: 

And, after Kass is done making a chart ranking all the nations of the world including unseen ones from most to least misogynistic (worldbuilding!), I find this character analysis interesting. I like the insight that Kass’s relationship to his identity and the way it changes depending on who he’s around. That he’s his old self with his friends, accepts being called a woman at work because he’s more concerned with proving his humanity, and only really gave his lady-ness much thought when being sexually harassed by rats.

For one, we’ve actually seen this behavior from him over the comic, so it’s not some secret that was only in Kass’s head and is being info-dumped, and it’s good character writing that we can recognize these subtle details in his actions enough to read all this and go “yeah, that scans”. 

But also I just like seeing a webcomic talking about Gender and actually having a unique angle on it. I like the perspective a character who’s sex/gender is low of the list of Important Parts Of My Identity. I like that insight that a gendered term of respect in a misogynistic society is inherently a little backhanded. I like that a male character is bubbling with feminist rage due to 2nd-grade-level rats, which is certainly not a story I’ve seen before.

Hello, everyone! I've been hard at work on a few things, one of which is an update to the model. It'll be a few weeks before 0.98 releases, but I'm committed to working on it routinely until then: I want to get this in its absolute best possible shape before Furality Umbra, and that requires a few additions to the model to make it look and feel a bit more yinglety.

The above screenshot is from the first steps of 0.98's remodeling push: as this is going to be the update that'll also be going on FurHub and VRCArena, the focus here is going to be on model aspects the player's going to see first: the hands, head, and face. What you're seeing here are two important changes: first, nostrils that aren't just a painted-on cluster of pixels, and second, ears that have concave geometry lining up with what you find in the yinglets of Val Salia. This is particularly important, as the previous attempt to articulate the form of the ears through a pixel texture is one of the messiest aspects of the model to date. I still need to make sure this new look plays nice with the customization blendshapes, but I'm very proud of how this looks so far.

I have very charitably been sent a set of three Vive 3.0 trackers, which has brought to the forefront an incentive to recreate more aspects of the Yinglet Experience. Here are a few things I anticipate putting in 0.98:

Remodeled ears, snout, hands, and feet. Already mentioned, bears mentioning again.

Toggleable shirt, dress, shorts, and skirt. Technically the main feature of this update; also bears repeating. Shirt will have a spot for front and back graphics, easily replaceable in the texture.

Cleaned-up pixel texture. I keep noticing minor tweaks I could make, and I'm gonna make 'em! Just you watch!

Toggleable first-person snout. I've tried this out in a different model and it's now a top priority.

Ears (and possibly whiskers) animating to facial expressions. The Out-of-Placers comic has gone into exceptional detail describing and depicting how this is meant to work, and I want to make good on that.

Puppetable tail. I anticipate it being a circle menu option where you can position it with a thumbstick and set it in place. I might not be able to get this fully working for 0.98, but I want players to be able to have their tail lay as flat on the floor as their back, for the noodle-like nature of the yinglet body to be made obvious in that pose. Ideally, when you lay on your side, you should have the ability to see your body from the chest down to tailtip without interruption.

Texture map resize from 512x512 to 4096x4096. Oh, an eye-popping figure! This is not to add fidelity to the pixel aspects, but to instead give myself more room to work. More on this further down in this post.

Elimination of gap between bottoms of tearducts and top of snout. Finally! UGH!

I want to take this opportunity to highlight one of the key traits of where I've always wanted to take this model: I started on this with the intent of having it replace the original yinglet model I used for myself, and for there to be no reason for me to want to switch back to my former main. We're not only not there yet, we're still quite a ways off -- and one of the reasons for that is because of a difference in direction between Pixel Yinglets and the original. For comparison, here's the original in its current state:

Pixel Yinglets is currently more advanced than this, even when you only consider the eyes alone. The original's eye proportions look 'off' (they're spherical compared to the current model's oval shapes), and they're basically headlights with how emissive they are; I'm glad to have improved over those, and those traits won't be changing. The original's eyes do, however, have animating eyelids that move fluidly, as well as the wispy slit-pupil characteristic of a yinglet's eyes. This would be difficult to accomplish with the yinglet model's eyes in their pixelated state, which has me strongly considering for 0.99 making the "pixel" aspect of this either a toggle or a separately uploadable version (maintaining feature parity, that's important) rather than a given aspect of the model: to allow players to swap between pixelated and non-pixelated pupil and eyelid geometry sets, and to in turn also make a version of the body/clothing textures that's in a resolution you expect to see in any other VRChat model. In short: As of the eventual 0.99 update, in addition to Pixel Yinglets, you'll also have access to a featureset and aesthetic look equivalent to if the model package was just called "Yinglets", without any upgrade fees or anything like that.

Kroashent Character Spotlight: Salia Blackwater

Val's Notes: Salia Blackwater is the central figure of the Dragons of Dreger, the firstdaughter of their patron, Elara Blackwater. Like the others, Salia, began as a guest character, an informal "trade" between my world of Alvez and the world of Nova, the setting of the artist Ivanks. In Nova, Salia has a very complex and detailed backstory, intrinsically and tightly entwined with the lore and story of that setting. Many of the aspects present in Salia Blackfang's history simply do not have a direct analogue to Alvez, and so I tried to keep to the spirit of the character, a pawn in a political game between powerful factions who comes into her own agency and sense of self, drawing from power deep within her.

Salia is meant to be a little more conservative and controlled than the energetic troublemaking of Anjela, and I focused on these two to draw parallels. Salia's uniform is based on a modified version of that of the Lethan Windguard, military aeronauts who ride the flying windships through the skies. Her outfit is a bit more complex and individualized to show off her status and individuality.

Did you know we have yinglets in our system? (yinglets are the property of Val Salia, author of the comic Out Of Placers) So, this story just told itself in our head: --- So, a yinglet walks into a bar and asks the bartender, "Have you got any clams?"

And the bartender says, "No."

Heartbroken, the yinglet gives him a clam and walks out dejectedly, forgetting the rest of the joke.

The next day, the yinglet comes back and says, "I remember zhe rest of zhe joke! Have you got any snails?"

"Ah, you got that wrong," the bartender says. "It's nails, not snails."

And the yinglet cries, "Zhat's what I said!"

So, on the third day, the yinglet comes into the bar, and before he can say anything, the bartender just hands him a clam, and the yinglet goes, "HOLY SHIT, HOW DID YOU KNOW?!"

Commission: Lusty Argonian Maid'd

Welcome, hey, welcome!  I'm so glad you made it to the other side.  And here i am too, with my first post of 2024!  Let's do this.

This is for our good pal Val Salia!  Lusty Argonian Maid'd is...

...

I'm really not sure where to begin with this one.  Do you know Skyrim?  That nigh-legendary video game from some years back?  Well, if you didn't know, there's a text in the fantasy setting called "The Lusty Argonian Maid", about....  Oh, there are lizard people in this setting, and they're called Argonians.  Right?  And the book in question is sort of a gag, a raunchy tale about a lusty Argonian maid.  And also in this setting (that is, in the Elder Scrolls franchise, not in the raunchy book), there's a mischievous god who likes causing mayhem and chaos because that's his thing.  He's like Q, but without the moralizing.  So!  Val Salia's writing and drawing an ongoing fan comic in which the trickster god targets the Dragonborn (the protagonist of Skyrim) and transforms him into a real-world (as in, in the context of the game) lusty Argonian maid!  And the Dragonborn is compelled to act the part, which is bad enough since he's supposed to be saving the world from dragons, but it turns out the curse is contagious, and it spreads to Orgnar (a bartender working for an innkeeper who is actually an undercover secret agent), who turns into a sexy Khajiit (there are cat people as well as lizard people), and then it keeps going, and soon all of Skyrim is threatened by this plague turning its victims into pantomime bimbo stereotypes, and all the while the dragons that you're supposed to stop in the game are still ending the world and Pussywillow (Orgnar) low-key hates Lifts-Her-Tail (the Dragonborn) for doing this to them, and it keeps getting worse and more fun to watch.  And that's not the half of it!

It's one of my favorite comics in the world right now.  Funny, ribald, cleverly written, and 51 pages long as of this writing.  As a connoisseur of comics about people getting changed into monster girls, I give it my highest recommendation.  I couldn't fit all that I wanted to draw on a single page!  Check it out if any of that appeals to you, and if not, I encourage you to look into Out-of-Placers, Val Salia's other, more serious-minded webcomic about someone becoming a girl freak!  They're both great reads with their own appeal, and they get my Monster-Girl-Maker Gold Seal of Approval.

-Style: She LOVES the Halloween stuff, so it is everywhere. She never took it down. She has taken the black flowers from other people's islands, and that is all she has. All houses are spread out and surround by trees. She keeps a inventory of witch hats to give to villagers so each day they will wear a witch hat. If they can't wear hats, they are thrown off the island

-Style: Everything is meticulously placed to look like one of those AC aesthetic Social-Like accounts. There is a little fairground off to the side with a teacup ride.

-Style: All the new Vincent & Pele stuff, mixed with a whole bunch of custom design stuff revolving around his favorite games. He happens to have lots of island variations of items because he plays with anyone who has a switch all the time.

-Style: Despite the names, the island is actually pretty normal. He doesn't have a preference on villagers, nor does he really go crazy with custom designs. Instead, most of the terraforming is done in order to prank villagers, such as making a mine field of pitfalls or digging a moat around a house.

-Island Name: Avalon

-Style: has colored everything into purple, blue, and green tones making it look otherworldly. She has all the constellation stuff, as well as the flower-based stuff. Her island consists of Coco, Jitters, Stitches, Kiki, Lucky, Roscoe, Stitches, and Raddle.

Jessica Jessica... cuantas veces he dicho eso con tono de mama molesta? Muchas seguro. Esta chica se convirtio en alguien sumamente importante , todo es muy loco y gracioso primero que la conoci en el teatro nos hicimos amigas y eso pero poco a poco nos empezamos a unir mas , termino Hsm2 y fue la primera fiesta que estuvimos juntas , esa fiesta , como olvidarla , las fiestas del teatro son LAS FIESTAS , si me volvieran a retar para besar a Jess no lo haria , ya no tampoco es que la haya besado solo fue un pico esa vez.. Pero ahora simplemente no lo haria , porque? Se ha vuelto como una hermana para mi y no puedo besar a mi hermana , asi que no. Empezamos a hablar mas por wsp yo deje Hsm y no estuve en Descendientes pero siempre iba a apoyarlos y el dia del estreno fui y ese dia si no fuera por mi Jessica salia calata 😂 , creo que fue una anecdota que nos quedo siempre , luego pasamos san Valentin juntas y fue super lindo , al cumple de Val fuimos juntas y eso nos re unio pasamos como 4 hrs de viaje sentadas hablando de todo! Siempre que hay fiestas o salidas dicen "Si va Jessica , va Dara" y es que es cierto nuestros papas ya se conocen y todo! Como olvidar las bromas en ensayos con su collar , la pijama , la primera que tuvimos con las chicas en su casa fue simplemente magico eso nos unio mas y creo que desde ahi simplemente no imagino mi vida sin mi Limonchi , para Mamma Mia estuve ahi ayudandola y luego por fin otra vez ibamos por un musical juntas! "Viernes Sangriento" como olvidar el panico que tuvo Jess cuando se entero que tenia que besarse con Tato! Horas de horas hablando en su casa de todo , cuando regreso de Disney tuvimos una pijama solo las dos , definitivamente eso nos unio mas , no dormimos , nos quedamls hablando de todo , DE TODO , la reaccion de Jess a lo que yo le decia era epico al final termino diciendome " ya lo sabia " la odiooo! Mentiraa la amo pero es asi mi relacion con ella es Amor/Odio aveces yo la quiero matar , ella me quiere matar por cada cosa que hacemos siempre es tipo " Bueno ya pendeja que hiciste " y pum es imposible no decirle nada y cuando es el caso de ella siempre me dice " Tengo que decirte algo" y yo me preparo mentalmente😂

Do you have any recommendations for some good ole fashioned fantasy webcomics?

It's on a bit of a hiatus, but Ten Earth-Shattering Blows is maybe the best action webcomic out there right now. It's also an "ole-fashioned" sword and sorcery type of fantasy that you don't get as much of anymore, very 70s/80s fantasy with a bit of Mad Max energy.

Out-Of-Placers is also a low fantasy, with a heavy focus on the weird creatures that live in its world. It's also got some kind of record for being closest to a fetish comic without ever being a fetish comic

In the higher-magic front, Prequel is one of my all-time favorite webcomics. It's got the best magic system I have ever seen in anything (in that's it's perfectly tailored to the story being told instead of just being a cool system). The early parts are a bit edgy and it updates about one page every two years nowadays, but when it works it works.

Unfortunately some of it doesn't work, as it was a bit of casualty of the death of flash and no unofficial archive exists like for Homestuck.

Latchkey Kingdom is starting to move out of the "ole fashioned" fantasy, being less of a "Worldbuilding!"-focused comic and a bit heavier on the "Characters have fun adventures" style. But they're good adventures Brent.

Also some weird old dude makes a weird old comic, I guess. Might be worthwhile? I dunno

Why is this not-quite-a-fetish comic so fucking wholesome? Poak, Vesaria, and Zally have been around for two pages each and I’m already more invested in them as a group than I am the entire main cast of some comics, even comics I like!
