Time for a few more things:
Neon Ascending: This one was probably doomed from the start because I don't think I've ever really enjoyed playing a tower defense game other than Plants vs Zombies (although Defender's Quest came close). I tried it anyway because it looked like it was doing something interesting, and it was. I can appreciate the roguelite upgrade progression and the way it's more of an inventory management puzzle than anything, but I still don't really feel like playing anymore after a couple runs. Also the skill tree is plagued with many, many extremely boring minor stat upgrades compared to the small number of more interesting ones, but it was only added in the most recent patch, so maybe they'll keep working on it over time.
Picayune Dreams: This one also only lasted a couple runs, but I'm undecided on whether it's doing anything interesting or not. I don't love that everything feels like it has a little too much health and the character moves a little too slowly to be satisfying, but at least it feels a lot better than Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor or Survivors of the Dawn. The bullet heck boss fight patterns are more fun than a lot of stuff in a lot of similar games though. No real opinion on the story or characters because I only made it through the first memory/story/whatever section. Seemed potentially maybe interesting and maybe not, but what stood out more in that section was that diagonal movement being faster than horizontal/vertical movement (because horizontal/vertical speed are fixed) felt very bad. Also more than probably any other game I've played on the Steam Deck, do not ignore the small text warning. It's an absolute nightmare trying to read what the upgrades do, especially during a run but also in the menu afterward (although the latter is more of a layout problem).
Vampire Survivors: Emerald Diorama: Hooray, finally something I actually got along with pretty well. I wasn't going to bother because I really did not get along with Ode to Castlevania at all, but I figured I might as well try it because I've been playing SaGa Emerald Beyond. They actually managed to capture a lot of elements of it surprisingly well, from the structure of the map with different "worlds" to glimmering new attacks to each character having two different possible starting weapons. I generally had a pretty decent time going through it and unlocking everything. Afterward I went back to give Ode to Castlevania another chance. It went a little better than before, but I still have so many complaints about it and would say it's easily still my least favorite thing in Vampire Survivors. A large amount of that could be fixed by giving it its own adventure mode version to introduce stuff in a more controlled and structured way, and the rest has already been solved by other games in the genre or even other parts of VS itself, but I don't feel like complaining about it all over again right this minute unless one of the zero people who reads this is super interested.

Vampire Survivors free SaGa Emerald Beyond collaboration DLC ‘Emerald Diorama’ now available - Gematsu
poncle, in cooperation with Square Enix, has announced Vampire Survivors downloadable content “Emerald Diorama,” a collaboration with SaGa Emerald Beyond. It is available now for all platforms, free of charge.
“We have another big surprise for SaGa fans: a collaboration between Vampire Survivors (yes, that Vampire Survivors!) and SaGa Emerald Beyond,” said SaGa series general director Akitoshi Kawazu in a press release. “You may be wondering what could have possibly brought a bullet hell, survival roguelike and SaGa together. This collaboration was realized thanks to Luca from poncle being a fan of the SaGa franchise. I would never have imagined that SaGa would continue to expand in this way, so at the same time as being totally surprised, I feel a new, fresh kind of joy.”
Kawazu continued, “To the SaGa fans out there who haven’t experienced Vampire Survivors yet: please seize this opportunity to jump in and enjoy Vampire Survivors. And I would love for Vampire Survivors fans to try playing SaGa Emerald Beyond as well. But first, let’s enjoy Vampire Survivors: Emerald Diorama. I’m going to be playing too—until my fingers hurt!”
SaGa series producer Masanori Ichikawa added, “Firstly, I’m truly delighted that this day has arrived. Thank you so much to Luca and all the creators at poncle for your love of SaGa Emerald Beyond. I’ll also be diving in and enjoying this collaboration!”
Here is an overview of the downloadable content, via its Steam page:
About
In a universe where a single level up choice can change everything, the SaGa: Emerald Beyond characters stand shoulder to shoulder with the Vampire Survivors, united to face their next adventure together. Will the Vampire Survivors be graced by the presence of a vampire? We doubt it, but never say never. As the Junction opens, the Vampire Survivors are thrust into a strange system of interconnected worlds, from a wondrous enchanted witchdom to a sinister realm of bloody nightmares. Equipped with the power of Glimmers and befriended by those that understand this strange universe better than anyone, onward they step in to the unknown; united in cause, wanting to survive, and bereft of fear. Well maybe a little bit of fear.
Over 12 New Characters
An eclectic cast of bizarre SaGa protagonists join the Survivors, including:
Tsunanori Mido – A fate-forged master of Kugutsu combat puppets.
Ameya Aisling – An undercover witch searching for her lost magic (and cats)
Bonnie and Formina – A duo of daring detectives who fight side-by-side with fists and firearms.
Diva No. 5 – A songstress mech forsaken for singing a forbidden melody, travelling between different worlds (and robotic bodies) to rediscover her memories.
And Many More! – Including a teacher of heroes, an Emperor unthawed, and a Dismal King with some bloodthirsty tendencies…
Over 16 New Weapons and the Glimmer Mechanic
40 new ways to attack, including base weapons, evolutions, and the sensational Glimmer mechanic from the SaGa series. Whenever you attack with these weapons, there’s a chance to spontaneously learn a special technique through the Glimmer system. Swords, magics, punches, and missiles: all the variety of SaGa gets represented!
Fleuret – Stab enough encroaching enemies and you’ll Glimmer the Crystalline Carve, letting you freeze foes whilst cutting them down.
Pressure Point – Unleash a barrage of martial arts blows at close range to Glimmer the far-reaching fire jab Shenlong Firefist.
Hecaton Machine Gun – Shoot a blistering salvo of interestingly inaccurate bullets to Glimmer the Bombarding Fire technique, blasting baddies with a massive upheaval of the earth.
Hyperion Bazooka – Master these high-power missiles that explode as they penetrate through hordes of foes to Glimmer the Cosmic Rave to massively multiply your firepower.
Character Parties
No JRPG downloadable content is complete without a squad of odd allies to pal around with. Level up Tsunanori Mido to summon up to four Kugutsu combat puppets, fighting independently with their own weapons in a defensive cross formation. Pick either Bonnie or Formina to play as both intrepid investigators, combining punches and pistols for a powerful partnership. And in the darkness of Yomi, rumours swirl of a Dismal King who can enthral defeated foes to make his own army of allies…
Showstopper
Survivors never give up! When a SaGa character reaches critical HP they fight back from the brink with a Showstopper, a brief burst of bonus Might, decreased Cooldown, and a little extra Luck to help them survive whatever precarious situation you’ve put them in with a tempest of powered-up projectiles.
A New World-Weaving Stage
Follow the Emerald Wave through a diorama of interwoven worlds, the perfect setting to walk sideways while mowing down masses of unusual monsters and bonkers bosses.
Remixes of Stupendous SaGa: Emerald Beyond Tracks
“A Fierce Engagement”
“A Quick Warm-Up”
“Against All Odds”
“CCPD, Moving Out!”
“Darkness Incarnate”
“Emerald Destinies”
“Feel The Beat”
“The World’s Heartbeat”
“Yumeha, Chipper As Ever!”
Vampire Survivors is available now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC via Steam, iOS, and Android.

So, uh...whatcha doin'? (Week of April 6-12, 2025) - Vampire SaGa
I almost completely forgot that A Minecraft Movie was released last week. As I expected, the reviews are split between "It's okay for what it is" and "It's kinda bad, but still better than Eli Roth's lame-ass Borderlands movie" and it made major bank in its first week at the box office.
I'm not a Minecraft superfan, so this film wouldn't have appealed to me much. I thought The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the first two Sonic the Hedgehog films were surprisingly good as far as video game-based movies go, so maybe at some point in the future, I might watch it. Who knows?
Anyway, here's what the hell I've been up to this week:
Video Games
I had unlocked all of the Steam achievements for Vampire Survivors a couple of months ago. There used to be 220, but the in-game "unlocks" counter had more than 300, with all of the unlocks from the crossover DLCs (Emergency Meeting, Operation Guns, and Ode to Castlevania) not counting toward the Steam total.
A few days ago, the game got a new big update that adds a third Adventure centered around ice queen She-Moon Eeta ("To End an Ice Age") and a free DLC pack called "Emerald Diorama" that crosses over with SaGa: Emerald Beyond. As I've had my eye on that game for a while (and have been playing SaGa Frontier II HD Remaster and some other SaGa-adjacent RPGs like The Alliance Alive), I downloaded the DLC almost as soon as I learned about it, but it'll be a while before I get around to testing the new characters and weapons.
Video Games + Music
I had enough PlayStation Rewards points to finally jump into Helldivers II on PlayStation 5, but my brother talked me out of it at the last minute, so I split my points between Cat Quest III and Crossy Road Castle. As of this post, I haven't played the former, but I played a few runs of the latter, which had only broken free from Apple Arcade jail last year.
For some silly reason, I've become fixated on the boss music against the giant eagle from the first tower. It's called "Fight or Flight", and I think I like it because it sounds like something that would fit right in with a goofy game like the WarioWare or Kirby series.
