RAVENS VBS COMMISION RANKINGS

this took a LOT of editing and relistening and some of them could still shuffle depending on theday (looks at second half of S and D) but i think this is a pretty good overall of my likes!!! one sheep and cinema are v interchangeable

probably very controversial list honestly but fuck it its MY COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL SELF INDULGENT LIST !!!

toya’s imagination

despite what toya looks like on the outside. i remember i mentioned this before (or somewhat touched on it) but. toya has a very vivid imagination, thanks to his love for music, and also to his father for introducing that world to him... its why he never stops thinking, its why he's so detail oriented, its why he strives for every bit of perfection (even if it slowly drains him all the way, until it is too late to realise) because he wants everyone to feel the same way he did, to imagine the same scenery as he would feel from every note.

second photo → "i'll never forget that beautiful tone for the rest of my life... like the gentle sun shining through the trees, like a gentle breeze blowing on my face" he imagined that all just from one. one note. so you can think about a whole movie he’d imagine in his head if he were to listen to an entire piece from his father.

he's very intentional about details, emotions, colors, in the things he makes and does because he was taught to consider all those factors in his musical education. he knows that one little thing he changes can produce something entirely different.

"i don't feel the pride in your music", is harumichi knowing toya was afraid. afraid of disappointing vbs, ken-san, everyone around him again (perfectionist traits). he knows that toya hates disappointing people (because he knows what he can do)... so because of those fears it felt like the essence of toya's music was held back.

so my 10000th different interpretation of harumichi telling toya, "music is your pride", is him knowing that toya wants to make music that feels exactly like that. so he wants toya to not lose sight of that goal. he wants toya to create a musical piece that visualises that goal in other people's imagination. he wants toya to push forward to become the musician he wants to be and prove his feelings to everyone. more importantly, he isn’t going to allow his son to throw music away again.

and also this is just... the nth time of toya expressing how much he admires and loves his father. to the point he remembers the sheer difference between the singular note he plays vs the singular note his father plays... "when i pressed the key, it was so dull... but when it was my father.... oh i'd never forget that beautiful sound---" he really wants to be just like his father too.

God I love blender!!! I need to write a whole essay on why I love blender!!!

Like let's talk about how despite the fact there's 5 people singing this song, they rotate so there's never more than three people singing at once, whether that's one on the melody and two on the harmony, or very carefully, all three in unison. It helps keep that light feeling by not feeling too strong or heavy in the vocals. It's not meant to punch you with emotion. It's meant to soothe you, feel bright, innocent, and make you happy by making the feeling well up from within.

And the composition is also kept quite simple, the mix mostly emphasizes the percussion and blends (haha) the other instruments to sit backwards and complement the vocal melody. It's deliberately simple, because there's nowhere to hide things like mistakes or uncertainty.

It's a song of clarity and self reflection, and it perfectly reflects Toya's pure technical ability and his true reconciliation of his feelings about his past and utilizing the full extent of his ability to CREATE his true feeling in song by merging what he tried to suppress of his path and what he learned on his own path.
