People fundamentally misunderstand the point of how Project Sekai treats its abusive parents. They are, indisputably, shown to be abusive and neglectful, and the game goes in-depth into how that impacts their children, very clearly acknowledging this fact.

The trend of these characters gaining more depth and personhood in recent events isn't 'setting them up for a redemption arc' or acting like their children have to forgive them and reconcile– it's humanizing them. Rather than flat, one-note horrible parents. the writers choose to make each of them clearly established as people, with reasons, however flawed, for being the way they are. It's easy to see abusers as monsters, but they're just people, and being human doesn't subtract at all from what they've done.

The best example of this is Shin'ei– he does, ultimately, care about his daughter and want her to succeed, but his own past trauma and distant nature render him unable to connect with Ena, leading to the bitter feud we see them in. He's an awful parent, with no clue how to even speak to his own daughter, at least partially due to the love he has for her, and both the viewer and the characters having to reconcile those two facts is what makes the story so poignant.

It's genuinely a brave move from the devs, and allows them to explore deeply flawed characters– especially for N25, who have the weight one's parentage places upon them as a central theme– and I wish people would see it for that, instead of just looking at an abusive parent being treated as a real person and assuming the worst.

i LOVE and always think about the detail of Arata's mood immediately souring upon hearing of Akito and Toya's partnership, then quickly hiding it. it says so much about him. how his unnecessarily harsh words towards VBS right afterwards... very likely could have been the result of jealousy and resentment because they have what he lost. and misses.

resident an shiraishi loremaster jay, re: an bfes untrained, i can't remember if mama shiraishi is explicitly said to not be part of vivid street's subculture, or if i just made that up... but if she IS part of vivid street, i would like to believe the person on the left side of baby an scratching the DJ records is yuka. (she could be filipina, too, if you squint.)

I've actually thought about this too! I was just waiting for a better quality. But it would make total sense for it to be her!

I also do seem to recall something about Yuka not really being a part of Vivid Street Culture. She barely ever comes to WEG (which is kind of a family business and it's actually more strange of her to make a point of staying out of it if she was part of the town), and I think it's said that she doesn't really do music. I'll need to scour the stories again to see if that's ever stated explicitly and if yes, where, but I think we can safely assume she doesn't really participate. She could just be goofing around with An though!

have u ever shared ur thoughts on why vbs started with three virtual singers instead of two?

i mean well i think it's mostly just a case of there being 6 vsingers, 5 units and Niigo not getting a starter for plot reasons, but also i think the specific selection of MEIKO and Len makes a lot of sense for why VBS got the two.

Street SEKAI MEIKO doesn't really do a whole lot. She never really performs with the others and usually just works at the cafe. She's the vsinger equivalent to Ken, she's a mentor to the kids but doesn't join in with them. But obviously, VBS needed a starter to join in with their performances, so you've got Len leftover and his personality meshes well with the members.

Actually I think it's funny that technically VBS started with 4 since Rin was there the whole time and is said to have existed before the main story (and is mentioned in said story and actually appears in the vsinger one). 3 is a bit much to count as their unit specific vsingers though, and Rin was already assigned to MMJ so it makes sense she doesn't count as one of their main vsingers. Plus she's only really there so Len could have a partner.

And if you want to get really technical on it then they started with 6 because KAITO and Luka had been there the entire time but fucked off somewhere else for a bit.

I have two theories. One of them (the far more realistic one) is that all of the vsingers being there from the start is to set up a sort of team as VBS eventually did at the end of their first arc. The other (grasping at straws) one is that the SEKAI was influenced by more than just VBS, but VBS are the ones who can access it. I talked about it more back in July. It's a bit ridiculous, but we know SEKAI take a while to form, we know Street SEKAI has been around for a while, and also there's the fact that some of the vsingers take influence from RADder, which is certainly something alright, especially considering that when the SEKAI manifested Toya didn't know anyone other than Ken and Kohane knew none of them. You could just say that Akito and An have more influence on the SEKAI which is arguably true but sometimes meta can be fun too.

It's probably 500 days to early to be asking this but what would you like Toya5 to be about?

I really want him to play piano again and fully come to terms with his past and embrace it with a song that brings VBS even closer to their goal. Though I'd be ok with anything as long as it's not super Gurney Flap focused because good god I'm tired of those guys.

Not Mafumom specific but some parents really do not realise the harm they have done. I’m not calling pjsk a bad story for not having a character like this, but there are horrible parents like that who genuinely will never regret their actions. Just because you haven’t experienced this it doesn’t mean that they don’t exist.
