Prefacing this with he's still not a good dad and needs to get help for being one.

But Toya's dad isn't abusive in the way that Ena's dad or Mafuyu's mom are. They're outwardly abusive. You can see the abuse as an outsider looking in.

You can't for the Aoyagi's.

See, Harumachi or whatever his name is doesn't *TECHNICALLY* abuse Toya in a mental sense. It still is abuse to an extent, but it's not textbook and probably wouldn't be classified as abuse. Because Toya only got the "symptoms" after leaving classical music.

He'd push for perfection. And ever after getting as close as a child can get, Toya would push further. Even after Toya abandoned his classical music, Harumachi doesn't really see it as "failure" in the way we claim as fans. He only sees it as "failure" because Toya didn't go back to it as a primary focus. In the soon to end as of march 28th event in Global, he even says the 12 years spent were not in vain or a failure on Toya.

The reason he is still abusive (and honestly the only one of the three abusive parents we have that deserves a redemption arc which should be taken at the pace we're getting) is because he still claims what Toya's doing with his life and training as inferior and wrong, while trying to push Toya back into Classical Music very gently.

Despite the fact that Toya for a long time would physically get sick when hearing classical music, couldn't stand being called Harumachi's son and did everything to avoid playing on his classical training to improve his current music.

It took Harumachi telling Toya to his face that the training wasn't a failure for Toya to open up to the idea that he was allowed to take his training of 12 years and use it in Street music. It took that door being opened, that ability to turn it into a bridge, to allow this.

And now that Toya (at least in JP for now) is off exploring the world, he has a chance to see his brothers and in person explain everything he's learned. If his siblings start to accept Toya, his dad may be more open to the idea.

Of course, it won't change the fact that he didn't stop Toya from over practicing as a child. That he made Toya practice til his fingers hurt and let him do more practice afterwards. That the harsh pushes to be as great as possible in classical wrecked the relationship Toya has with the genre. But it would be a step in an abuser realising maybe, just maybe, they weren't being good or even great.
