everyone is in the hospital today. My aunt’s in her 10th hour of labor with this baby- at her own insistence, she refuses any alternatives. My grandma passed out in her living room on our way to get her to see my aunt. My brother was already in hospital, but had to be taken into the emergency room all of a sudden on our way over- we got a call from the hospital and thought it was something about the baby, but turns out one of the holes in his kidney has opened back up- apparently one appeared in his liver too. Its a lot right now.
Mom keeps yelling at me in the waiting area in between yelling at hospital staff- about incompetence in “these liberal run hospitals that care more about killing babies than birthing them” (her words, not mine) about dad leaving her behind with two kids and a house to take care of, about me not doing enough. She’s panicking. She was like this when they first discovered the holes in Ed’s kidney, she was like this when dad died. It still sucks. Everything sucks today. And I know nothing I do- even if I were to disappear- will help.

Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) is a type of congenital heart defect in which a hole is present in the wall that separates the two lower chambers of the heart. It is one of the most common types of congenital heart defects, affecting 1-2 out of every 1,000 babies. In this blog post, we will discuss the causes, treatment, and prevention of VSD. We will also provide an overview of the symptoms associated with VSD, as well as the prognosis for those with this condition.

Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a congenital heart condition characterized by the presence of an opening in the septum that divides the heart's lower chambers. Normally, this septal wall closes before birth, ensuring that oxygen-rich blood does not mix with oxygen-poor blood at the time of delivery.

Rain n' Thunder.
Lil au I made inspired by @beluvbug's au, PoGD! I felt very seen with their au and I wanted yo also project all of me onto a character, and rainbow dash fits me and my problems(and many I probably don't know.)
She has VSD( Ventricular septal defect) ever since she was a filly, she couldn't do much sports or activity, since its not goof to stress out her heart, may causing him to become very hurt or worse. But during a race with her bully she preformed a sonic rainboom, earning her cutie mark but forever changing her physical body, making it harder to be active for long periods, she now lives with fluttershy in her cabin years later, she had tried to sign for the wonderbolts but her adhd kept him from focusing. Barely making it pass, bur even now she avoids it because the fear of hurting herself and dissapointing others.

Boys Be Brave [EP.5] // Translation notes
I'm back with my - I guess?? - already weekly analysis of something Gaga subs might've missed in this show. Because apparently, the silly show got deeper and I'm staying here until the very end :D
Tumblr media
First of all, I was curious and checked whether there is anything about Kiseob's illness, and there is! There are two diagnoses:
상세불명의 심실중격결손 상세불명의 심방중격결손 Unspecified Ventricular Septal Defect, Unspecified Atrial Septal Defect
I am not a doctor definitely, but quick googling told me it's a heart defect (also called as 'a hole in the heart') which can have symptoms of heart malfunctioning. Which would! Explain even more! Why Kiseob has wrist watch that always measures his pulse and why on several occasions he was wondering why his heart was beating so fast next to Jinwoo (well, one for obvious reasons and another one is this).
And it's something you have since birth so he's been dealing with medication his entire life. Which would also explain further - after the scene with his sister - why the urge to be a people pleaser is so serious and so ingrained in him.
Tumblr media
Another interesting language detail I noticed in this scene. Kiseob says "That's why I just agree to anything" but it doesn't translate well to english, because the verb 좋아/좋아해 can mean "I like" (eating medicine) and "I like (the idea)/I agree". So first he started lying that yes, he likes taking medicine, and that transferred to him saying that yes, he likes this, he agrees with this (whatever that is, anything he is proposed with)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I cannot like anyone, right?" "Why not? You're a bastard with a lot of money"
This phrase references all the previous phrases that other people used to describe Kiseob, but Balgeum doesn't sense the real problem of his friend because the phrasing is general, it can also mean 'I have no chance of loving someone', and that's why Balegum thinks it's just Kiseob having low self-esteem or something. And also to him having money = being able to love, letting himself confess and date the one he loves, so of course, that's his answer. Kiseob has a lot of money, why wouldn't he confess to Jinwoo if he likes him?
But Kiseob can't because he doesn't even know his own feelings, and everyone around tells him he doesn't have the ability to love someone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Giving me (toilet paper) as if I moved to a new house"
Now, I cannot be the only one thinking years ago why the hell Koreans give each other huge packages of toilet paper when they visit someone xD But this is also a cultural thing!
When your friends move to a new house, you are supposed to come with gifts and usually with very practical ones, like toilet paper (very common gift). Rich friends can give you coffee machines or humidifiers or something like that. In my country, when you visit friends (not moving houses but still), you usually bring some desserts or food to have with tea. So for some countries, toilet paper is a norm :D
Balgeum has been living in his small apartment for a long time but it's the first time Inho visits his house so he's giving it a gesture of respect (but still an awkward one).
[Interrupting my broadcast to scream about cuteness and awkwardness of Balgeum x Inho AAAAAHHHHH Now back to the schedule]
Tumblr media
...No, we will definitely focus on scribbling over Jung Kiseob's name for 100th time, absolutely distracted from any historical knowledge going in the background ^^
Tumblr media
Oh! By the way! I remember being surprised that, apparently, some people on social media were uncomfortable with Kiseob seemingly 'feminizing' himself to be likeable by Jinwoo. Let me tell you that no, Kiseob doesn't do that at all!
There is nothing truly that indicated that he wants to be a ideal girl for Jinwoo (who has non-gendered perfect type list as I mentioned in my previous translation notes post!). He doesn't even use typical school-girl aegyo on Jinwoo (aka acting cute), maybe a tiny bit but it's not typical and it's not usually in his language at all. He talks gently and softly a lot! But he doesn't add typical cuteness in the way he talks (like there's no pouting, mumbling words and ending sentences with -ung).
I talked about dress = one-piece = jumper suit being the same in Korean but Kiseob literally only follows what Jinwoo wrote about a person he likes (not girl). As I described it, "he's using loopholes in Jinwoo's specific list in a true himbo way" :D He doesn't really do anything girly and doesn't pretend to be a girl as I can sense.
And I don't think I need to clarify another time, but falling in love during first snow/first sight is one of Jinwoo's list. Which Kiseob already fulfilled but he doesn't know that, and he just saw Jinwoo being with Hyejin witnessing first snow, which was the last straw for him to admit his failure and give up pursuing Jinwoo.
By the way, Koreans really think the first snowfall is a romantic event, like there are saying you'll fall in love with/be happy dating with someone you'll be with during first snow^^ It comes up in many Kdramas.

In truth, Lucy Gray was too young to be doing this. Halfway eighteen, with her heart broken by a man — a boy, really — who almost killed her. Ironically, the suspect of her current predicament was the same person. Oh how Lucy Gray hated it that he still haunted her now.
She had Lucy Gray’s tan skin, her baby girl. The wisps of her hair stuck against her forehead were bright blond. Lucy Gray wondered if her hair would darken eventually.
Annabel Rose Baird was a sickly baby. Her heart was weak and every night, Lucy Gray would have trouble sleeping, afraid that she’d wake up with a cradle gone cold. But she was a survivor, her Annie. Much like her mother. (And father.)
But they could not live on that alone. Lucy Gray, barely recovered from birth, wrapped her baby tight on her back with a sling and took their meager belongings in a bag, setting out to find the community up North Billy Taupe had once talked about. Lucy Gray walked for miles and miles, sometimes wishing she hadn’t left behind that lovely orange scarf her lover gave her. It would’ve made for a more comfortable sleep in their journey. She could’ve given it to Annie as her baby blanket, something to remember her childhood by — the one piece of her father she would ever know or keep. But alas, Lucy Gray had left it behind along with the broken pieces of trust she once thought she could rely on.
Lucy Gray found them eventually. Or rather, they found her. It was in the middle of the night and she’d just put Annie to sleep when flashes of light shone through the gaps between the trees. Cradling her whimpering baby close to her chest, Lucy Gray raised a hand in surrender, hoping that she was saying the right words for them to not shoot her.
They took them to their leader and gave them a small cabin. It was cozy and comfortable but it wasn’t home. Not when their leader, with his calculating eyes and access to Capitol broadcasts, look at her and her baby with such intense scrutiny. Lucy Gray’s paranoia increases every time he “accidentally” chances upon her with questions about the Capitol, about the Hunger Games, about Annie. He’s not as subtle as he thinks he is. Lucy Gray endures his questions, answering casually to alleviate the suspicion upon her. Her heart threatens to beat out of her chest every single time. She could only properly breathe again when she’s back within the four walls of their cabin, with Annie safe in her arms, her little puffs of breath warming Lucy Gray from the inside out.
The one saving grace of the place was Dr. Hartree. She was training under some big shot Capitol doctor when she fled, so she knew more than the District healers did despite the meager hospital equipment she had. She diagnosed Annabel Rose with something called moderate Ventricular Septal Defect; a heart disease she had since birth. Dr. Hartree let her listen to the whooshing sound of her Annie’s heartbeat through the stethoscope. Her baby’s got a hole in her heart. Lucy Gray wept.
Dr. Hartree said that the hole might yet repair itself, that she could look for some medicine that could help strengthen Annie’s heart muscles. But if it did not, Annie would need heart surgery which Dr. Hartree was neither qualified for nor equipped to do. In that scenario, going to the Capitol would be Annie’s best hope, said the doctor. The community’s leader approved Dr. Hartree’s request for getting the medicine. In exchange, Lucy Gray had to take on additional work on top of what she’d already been assigned with to earn her keep. Lucy Gray was both thankful and suspicious. She was no fool, a big favor like that didn’t come without heavier strings. But her baby was alive so Lucy Gray kept her head down. (For the moment, at least.)
Annabel Rose grew up a happy child. She was small for her age but her presence filled the room and her heart was so full of love. Whenever she smiled, a deep dimple showed on her cheek and her warm brown eyes would shine like stars in the night sky. Her baby never did grow out of her blond hair, riotous curls tumbling down her head. She looked like an angel; Lucy Gray’s own angel.
She was truly heaven sent. There were no words to describe how much her daughter made her happy, which was something, coming from a songwriter. Oft Lucy Gray wished the Covey had a chance to know her daughter. Annabel Rose fit in alright with the children of the community, but children can be cruel sometimes. Annie’s body was weak and she ran out of breath fast, making her unable to be included in strenuous physical activities. Lucy Gray was not deaf to the whispers of “runt” that surrounded her daughter, whispers that eventually reached Annie’s ears, causing her to come home tearfully, fisting her mother’s skirt and asking what it meant. Once upon a time, Lucy Gray would have been rearing for a fight but everything was different now. She didn’t have her Covey; her and Annie were alone.
Oh, people were nice enough but, like in District 12, they seemed to be able to sense an otherness in her and Annie that made them unable to accept them fully. It didn’t help that the community leader’s demeanor was like that either. The residents liked and respected him better than the strangers they barely knew anything about, so of course they’d follow his example.
Lucy Gray had been missing her Covey so much that she contemplated going back to District 12, back to her family, when she’d heard that an electric fence was put around it, complete with Peacekeepers patrolling the perimeter. They’d never bothered with that area before, but Lucy Gray had an inkling why they suddenly found it important.
So what else could she do but grit her teeth and bear it? Every night Lucy Gray would sing songs to Annie and tell her stories about the Covey, about her family and the colorful nights and laughter they shared. And Annie’s eyes would shine in the low lamplight, humming along to the tunes.
Lucy Gray did not bring her guitar with her during her journey out of District 12, but she was able to obtain a smaller version — a ukulele — from a traveling salesman. His initial offer nearly took all her saved up money to pay for, but she was able to haggle down to a more reasonable price. At 3-years-old, Annabel Rose learned the basic chords from her mother. The first song she learned was to the tune of Lucy Gray's namesake.
It tugged at Lucy Gray’s heartstrings to hear her Annie’s sweet voice in the warmth of their home. She resolved to write a song for her daughter’s fourth birthday as a gift. Lucy Gray had her song, and so did her Capitol boy. It was only apt that Annabel Rose had one too.
It was the night of Annabel Rose's fourth birthday when everything went wrong. Lucy Gray was humming underneath her breath to the tune of a new song, their tiny kitchen fragrant with the smell of a birthday cake she’d stolen half the ingredients for to bake. She lit up a deformed red candle she attempted to mold from whatever melted wax she could find, cupping the flame between her palms briefly to keep it from being blown out. With a satisfied sigh, she wiped her hands on her apron and walked to the bed to shake her daughter awake.
All Lucy Grey felt was the cold skin of her daughter, her breathing shallow and her skin tinged blue. Her heart dropped to her stomach. With shaking hands, she wrapped Annie in a blanket and lifted her into her arms.
On the way to Dr. Hartree’s cabin, Lucy Gray would not realize that she’d been singing the song she’d written for Annie. And she will sing it under her breath while the good doctor examined her daughter, telling her the heart defect had gotten worse. She’d sing it at the back of her mind while Dr. Hartree tells her that surgery wasn’t an option anymore, that the medicine Annie’ll need is only available in the Capitol, that if she wants her baby to live she’ll need to find some way to get her a heart transplant. She’ll sing it and sing it, hoping the girl she’d written it for would awaken long enough to sing it with her.
She would only stop when Dr. Hartree clasped her hands, telling her in a hushed whisper that she’d found a way to get them to the Capitol discreetly. The doctor’s got family among the Peacekeepers in District 12 who was going to go to the Capitol in two days. Some officer fellow that was high-ranking enough to have his own private train cabin, and kind enough to share it with them. Dr. Hartree had given her temporary antibiotics for Annie with an apology that she couldn’t do anything more. When they arrive in the Capitol, Lucy Gray was on her own. Lucy Gray who had no penny to her name, who would probably be shot on sight once the Capitol had caught wind of her existence.
Her mind was racing on the morn she and a barely-lucid Annie snuck out to the gates. They were met with a heavyset man two heads taller than Lucy Gray, driving a military jeep. Time passed quickly and they encountered no hurdles getting to the train station on time. He lent them warm Capitol-style cloaks so they could blend in upon arrival. He’d even made her a cup of tea, noticing the nervousness in her demeanor. Lucy Gray had not been expecting such kindness from a Peacekeeper, no matter how highly Dr. Hartree spoke of him.
It was nighttime when they arrived, snow falling heavily on the ostentatious buildings. It wasn’t only the cold that made Lucy Gray shiver.
Under the cover of the night, Lucy Gray held her Annabel Rose and rapped on the door of the one she’d hoped would help them. If blood was not an enough reason, she could always appeal to their conscience.
The door swung open.
“Tigris, I need your help.”

i'm sorry if you already answered this question but how sunshine end up on foster care? is her biological parents giving her up or their no longer alive?
So Sunshine's parents are a big question mark.
When she was a baby, she was born with a VSD (a ventricular septal defect/hole in heart) and was then promptly abandoned at a fire station.
Her parents never came back for her so she went into foster care but only made it through a few families before her heart started shutting down and she stayed in hospital long term

AJ was a gift, send by God, even if his mother's parents weren't happy with the idea of their sixteen years old daughter falling pregnant and her bright future being forever tarnished by it. Being strictly religious, there was never even a mention for an abortion, even when doctors had adviced them to terminate the pregnancy due to some test results, and on one chill morning in November after a rough eight months Veronica Almaz gave birth to a set of twins.
AJ's birth name was Antonio Xavier Almaz and his sister was named Andrea Gabrielle Almaz, even though she only lived a couple of days after being born. Unlike her, AJ proved to be a fighter since birth despite the doctors giving him only 25% chances of living due to a rare condition he was diagnosed, called a ventricular septal defect. Due to it, he was a rather sickly child growing up, being under constant medical observation in case he may need a life-saving surgery performed to correct that defect. But surgery cost money, which the Almaz didn't have, which led Veronica to name a rather hasty decision and accept a job opportunity, which turned out to be a scam.
AJ and his mother became victims of human trafficking, never to see one another ever again. Due to his medical condition, AJ was soon dumped at a group home where he under constant neglect by the people who were supposed to be taking care of him. It wasn't until he was thirteen when the police were finally able to close down the place, releasing all children back to their real families or into the foster system as it appeared this home was a part of a bigger organisation, which was drawing funds.
AJ was a kid that one one wanted. He couldn't count the times he'd heard himself being too much; it was his medical history as well as everything that he's been through, which pushed potential adopters away. Then came Joshua Hoshea Meadows, a recently retired detective, who've lost his wife to cancer. It had always been his wife's dream to have a family, but they were unable to have one of their own and following her death, Joshua had made a promise to fulfill that wish by giving a chance to a child in need.
Under Joshua's care AJ flourished. There was finally some stability in his life, which allowed him to find what piqued his interests. As a teenager he was equally interested in sports, joining his high school's lacrosse team even, as well as computers, video games and all those things. It became evident that AJ was a rather smart kid, using his photographic memory to his advantage and having exceptionally high drive for solving puzzles of all kinds.
At the age of sixteen he was finally adviced to undergo a surgical procedure in order to help fix his medical issues once and for all.
Inspired by his adoptive father, AJ took interest in the law enforcement and proceeded a degree in criminal justice after graduation. He started his career path with the idea of becoming a detective, but later switched to crime analysis and profiling.

“Bree Roe,” 16 (USA 1972–1978)
“Bree” was 16 years old when she underwent a hazardous 17-week D&E abortion in an unidentified hospital. She had no idea that she would be fighting for her own life in the coming weeks.
As a complication of the abortion, Bree contracted a bacterial infection. It rapidly progressed to acute endocarditis of her aortic valve and ventricular septum, which caused congestive heart failure only two weeks after the abortion.
When Bree’s cause of death was confirmed, another condition was also discovered— one that she herself had been unaware of. If there had been any pre-op examination before the abortion, it had not detected that she had a ventricular septal defect. This meant a hole or other structural abnormality in the wall between the chambers of her heart. It is unknown how much this condition might have been a factor in her death, but it should be noted that endocarditis after abortion still could have killed a client as perfectly healthy as Bree was thought to be.
Others who died of heart infection after legal abortion include 19-year-old Jessie-Maye Barlow, “Carrie Roe,” “Anne Roe,” “Irene Roe,” “Lisa Roe,” “Collette Roe” and “Georgia Roe.” Many of them were perfectly healthy before the abortions that killed them.

It's been over three years since Nervous ran away, and the Beakers have run out of Nerv's blood that they had from the many tests that were run on him. The second clone is dead, so what do they do now? Well get more of course. However it doesn't have to be blood, any form of dna can work. They probably paid some schmuck to go get that because they don't want to look sus about it, also they don't have the time for that. The dude brought back one of those disposable cups that they took while hiding a dumpster waiting for Nerv to throw it in there. Since Nerv is a nasty man, the cup has a lot of spit. See I told you the cup was important. So they used all the spit they had collected to make a new Nervous clone. But there was an error as the cloning machine. So the cloning machine breaks down, fuck. Wait hold on, an actual clone was formed. The cloning machine also ages up the clone so it's the same age as Nerv, however the process stopped while it was in the infant stage. This clone looked different. It also looked like, Pascal Curious?
Turns out that cup was actually Pascal's, but Nervous wanted to try whatever he was drinking. Then gave it back all spitty and shit. Pascal doesn't want that back, you keep it ya nasty ass. That idiot who grabbed the cup appeared after Nervous had it back in his hand. The machine ended up mixing both their dna, and basically made a baby that was biologically related to them. It couldn't handle two dna samples so it broke. Well shit, what are they gonna do with it? Why isn't the baby moving, it's not even making a noise. Wait what time is it? Fuck, they're gonna be late of work if they don't hurry up. It seems the clone didn't even last a second, they need to fix the machine when they get off work. They'll just hide the failed clone in their trashcan and bury the body later in the backyard. Just like with the past two clones. After the Beakers drove off to their jobs, a half an hour had passed.
Pascal walking by the Beaker's home(Pascal seems like the type of guy who does morning walks), and hears crying. Sounds like it's coming from the trash can. He opens it and sees something moving in a trash bag. After opening it up, he finds an infant girl. What the fuck is going on? He picks up the infant and then immediately brings her back home while trying to comfort her. Nervous is confused on why there's a baby, are they babysitting for someone? Pascal explains what just happened, and Nerv immediately freaks out. What do they want with a baby? Were they experimenting on someone's child they kidnapped. At this point Nervous had regained most of his memories. This gave him flashbacks of when the Beakers kidnapped him while he was walking home. Pascal calmed down Nervous, it'll be okay. They have the baby, safe from those two monsters. Still, they'll have to take the child to the hospital to see if it has any problems. Tycho was still sleeping. Lazlo was asked to watch Tycho while they took this baby to get checked out. Good thing they still kept Tycho's old car seat.
Circe wasn't seen by them during their visit, so at least they wouldn't have to see her. After the infant was checked on, the doctor informed them that she was related to them both. Uh, excuse me what? How is that possible? Now there's more questions flooding in their heads than the ones they already had. Though it wasn't all that surprising, considering she did look like both of them. The infant also has a birth defect in her heart. The ventricular septal defect(VSD), which is one of the birth defects that has a hole in your heart. It required surgery, so she has a heart scar on her chest. Other than that, she seemed healthy. They can't just let this kid be put up for adoption, even if she wasn't related to them. For all they know, the Beakers would've gotten her back after finding out that she's still alive. So they decided to adopt and raise her. They ended up naming the child Lilibet
You may be thinking, why don't they call the police? Well, the Beakers probably have connections. So they wouldn't be seen as guilty of such a crime. They probably have tried before with Nervous. Trying to tell the police that they were the reason Nervous was kidnapped all those years ago. But nothing was done about it. Also the authorities are pretty shit there. How do you think Olive had those graveyards literally on her front lawn, and no one suspected it was her? Pretty sus if you ask me
Fucking finally, wow. Took longer than I thought. Like I said before, I wanted to remake this because it didn't really make any sense. I didn't further explain why both of their DNA was even in there I was just like "I don't know, it's a mystery lol". If I'm going make a backstory on a sim that was originally made just for fun and playing with genetics, then I'm gonna do it right. It was pretty busy yesterday so I only had time to make one drawing. It's Lil Curious snoozing after having surgery

Q. What does an atrial septal defect (ASD) sound like on auscultation?
.
.
.
.
.
A. Unlike ventricular septal defects (VSDs), an inter-atrial defect causes no murmur itself. However, a number of adventitious sounds may be associated with it.
- wide and fixed S2, due to the larger-than-normal volume of blood that is sent through the right-sided circulation, causing a later-than-normal closing of the pulmonary valve (the second sound in S2)
- a crescendo-decrescendo early systolic ejection murmur from the pulmonic valve heard best at the right upper sternal border (RUSB)
- a rumbling mid-diastolic murmur from blood rushing through the tricuspid valve heard best at the left lower sternal border (LLSB)
Pro-Tip: S2 is only wide and fixed when pulmonary resistance is low; if the defect remains open long enough, the extra blood flow will increase pulmonary vascular resistance, decreasing blood flow into the lungs and across the ASD, eventually resulting in Eisenmenger Syndrome.

Understanding Heart Disease: What is Heart Disease
What is Heart Disease?
Heart disease, also known as cardiovascular disease (CVD), encompasses a range of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels. It is the leading cause of death worldwide, causing significant morbidity and mortality. The term "heart disease" is often used interchangeably with "cardiovascular disease," although technically, cardiovascular disease includes all diseases of the heart and blood vessels, while heart disease specifically refers to conditions affecting the heart itself.
Types of Heart Disease
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): CAD is the most common type of heart disease and occurs when the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle, become narrowed or blocked due to plaque buildup (atherosclerosis). This can lead to chest pain (angina), heart attacks, and other complications.
Heart Failure: Heart failure, or congestive heart failure, happens when the heart muscle is unable to pump blood efficiently, leading to a buildup of fluid in the lungs and other tissues. Causes include CAD, hypertension, and cardiomyopathy.
Arrhythmias: These are disorders of the heart's rhythm, which can be too fast (tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia), or irregular. Common arrhythmias include atrial fibrillation and ventricular fibrillation, which can significantly impact heart function.
Heart Valve Disease: Heart valve disease involves damage to one or more of the heart's valves, affecting blood flow within the heart. Conditions include stenosis (narrowing of the valve), regurgitation (leakage of the valve), and prolapse (improper closure of the valve).
Congenital Heart Defects: These are heart abnormalities present at birth, ranging from simple defects like a hole in the heart's walls (septal defects) to more complex malformations. They can affect how blood flows through the heart and to the rest of the body.
Cardiomyopathy: Cardiomyopathy refers to diseases of the heart muscle. The heart muscle becomes enlarged, thickened, or rigid, which can lead to heart failure or arrhythmias. Types include dilated, hypertrophic, and restrictive cardiomyopathy.
Pericarditis: Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium, the thin sac surrounding the heart. It can cause chest pain and fluid buildup around the heart, affecting its function.
Causes and Risk Factors
Heart disease is influenced by a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Major risk factors include:
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension): Hypertension forces the heart to work harder to pump blood, leading to the thickening of the heart muscle and potential heart failure.
High Cholesterol: Elevated levels of cholesterol, particularly low-density lipoprotein (LDL), contribute to the formation of plaque in the arteries, leading to atherosclerosis.
Smoking: Smoking damages the lining of blood vessels, increases blood pressure, reduces oxygen to the heart, and raises the risk of heart disease.
Diabetes: Diabetes significantly increases the risk of heart disease. High blood sugar levels can damage blood vessels and the nerves that control the heart.
Obesity: Excess body weight strains the heart, raises blood pressure, and increases the likelihood of diabetes and cholesterol problems.
Physical Inactivity: A sedentary lifestyle contributes to obesity, hypertension, and other heart disease risk factors.
Unhealthy Diet: Diets high in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, sodium, and sugar can lead to heart disease by raising cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and weight.
Family History: A family history of heart disease increases one's risk, suggesting a genetic predisposition.
Age and Gender: Risk increases with age, and men are generally at higher risk earlier in life than women, although women's risk increases and can surpass men's post-menopause.
Symptoms
Symptoms of heart disease vary by condition but may include:
Chest pain or discomfort (angina)
Shortness of breath
Pain, numbness, or coldness in the legs or arms
Fatigue
Lightheadedness or dizziness
Palpitations (irregular heartbeats)
Swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosing heart disease often involves a combination of medical history review, physical examination, and diagnostic tests such as:
Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG)
Echocardiogram
Stress tests
Blood tests
Cardiac catheterization
CT or MRI scans
Treatment strategies vary based on the specific type of heart disease and its severity and may include:
Lifestyle Modifications: Healthy diet, regular exercise, smoking cessation, and weight management are crucial for preventing and managing heart disease.
Medications: Medications can control risk factors such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes, or treat specific heart conditions like arrhythmias and heart failure.
Procedures and Surgeries: Angioplasty, stent placement, bypass surgery, valve repair or replacement, and implantable devices like pacemakers or defibrillators may be necessary for severe cases.
Prevention
Preventing heart disease involves managing risk factors through:
Maintaining a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats
Regular physical activity
Avoiding tobacco use
Controlling blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels
Regular health screenings
Stress management techniques
Understanding and addressing heart disease through lifestyle changes, medical management, and preventive measures is crucial in reducing its impact and improving overall heart health.
