That omake of little Kabru not being able to show off his howetown sweets because of Misril gets to me a lot so...
Here's a happier Kabru (and Lairu)
#kabru#lairu#labru#laios#dungeon meshi#my art#my fanart#fanart#idk why i resort to fluffy fanart even tho i keep thinking and seeing gag/hornt lairu stuff#kabru is just so.. fascinating and actually endlessly tragic#i kinda like that ryoko kui doesnt try to over-explain or dramatize her characters that have tragic backstories. it makes her world that-#-much more believable and realistic. that being said i will devour more kabru stories from her#i kinda cant stop thinking abt kabru (and to an extent lairu)#ik in Lairu/Labru fanart Kabru is usually depicted as humorously in denial guy#but i see it everywhere and it made me think more of their more understanding phase in the epilogue#maybe laios is ooc here but i think he will also warm up to human connection now that he actually has people he cares abt around him#(and maybe because kabru is teaching him tips and trick to be a Normal Guy lmao)#im also not very good at humor so theres only so much i can do with gag lairu 😂

the difference between karkat and kankri when it comes to their shared aspect of blood is that karkat, as a knight, will protect and cultivate the bonds between his friends and will form connections with others easily due to his empathetic nature, even if said others are fucked up people in the eyes of others (see: his whole deal with spades slick, the way he formed moriallegience with rampaging gamzee), people naturally come into his orbit, meanwhile kankri being a seer doesnt want to create a connection between himself and others, but he wants to understand and study how those bonds work between people, basically looking outside in on the relationships and forming a list of do's and dont's when it comes to cultivating that connection
in other words, karkats that one motherfucker at the party whos somehow friends with everyone here, no matter their background, and everyone fucking loves that foul-mouthed guy, meanwhile kankri is standing in the corner like a creep and nobody knows exactly what his deal is but he knows what everyones deal is and somehow has knowledge of all of partygoers dirty laundry, even if theyve never seen him in their fucking life
#homestuck#kankri vantas#karkat vantas#karkats agressive appreciation of his friends vs kankris stalker-ish tendency to dig into everyones business#this doesnt touch upon the fact that kankris metatextually IS a failed seer but thats a post for another day#i love the dichotomy between these two and how much differently they use their aspect when it comes to group bonding#fascinating stuff#do you think kankris jealous about how easily karkat can make friends when his own act only manages to push people away#i think he is very much yes

tolkien (a studied linguist) and me (has taken their fair share of linguistic classes) staring at each other after the narrator casually drops that the hobbits just 'forgot' their languages and simply adopted the common speech as if that is a normal thing that happens out of the blue and isn't connected to at best cultural assimilation and at worst colonialism, imperialism, and oppression
#personal#lotr newsletter#lotr lb#love that you always find new stuff to think about with these books#like this is very easy to read over and simply accept bc it's such a small paragraph and also it's not presented as something super bad?#like i'm not saying the dunedain violently oppressed the hobbits and forced them to learn a new language or smth#but girl the implications...#like there certainly had to have been some kind of hierarchy so that the common speech had more prestige than whatever the hobbits spoke#bc they were multiple languages they were speaking!#like idk what it means rn but it's a fascinating choice to me that they forgot their languages except for a few words.#lmao maybe i'm also thinking too radically about this maybe it's not that deep. but it certainly caught me off guard reading hahaha#*closes the tabs on language death i had opened*

original thief series basso & garrett :)
ngl, it's about quality over quantity for me. an npc can have a total of three minutes of screen time, but if they have a cool name, they can live rent free in my head and I'll spend several hours trying to decipher drawable features from a blurry screenshot of pixels
there is a vague hint of a story here, and that's because every time I try to play thi4f, I get incredibly frustrated with how Not Fun the game play is. like, is the story good? well. but it has a PLAGUE. that should've given it instant 'I'll replay this once a year' status in my heart, but the game play sucks so bad that I've never finished it. I can't believe Not Fun gameplay beat out my obsession with narrative plagues.
anyway, the idea is basically if the original era had a game with a plague centric narrative and some other stuff I liked out of thi4f thrown into a narrative blender, with a heavy dash of horror thrown in because some parts of the thief games were scarier to me than entire dedicated horror genre games.
⭐ places I’m at! bsky / pixiv / pillowfort /cohost / cara.app
#if i had a laptop and the skillset i would attempt a story mod because the thief modders who create whole mission stories#are GENIUS and also somewhat terrifying. love them! xoxox#anyway im actually kind of obsessed with parts of thi4f but its also like. not at that sweet spot of almost good enough to be fun#to talk about. which. for the record. has not stopped me from talking about it at length to people#the city itself actually fucking fascinates me. its almost alive and im SO mad that not a single part of that game is actually terrifying#it should be gnarlier and instead it feels a bit like it doesn't quite want to be trapped in the story it has to tell?#but between the level that has the bodies on the meathooks#and the scene with the bodies hanging from the rafters or whatever that was and garrett living in a clock tower#because the game is very much ALMOST about changing times and authoritarian violence and capitalism#(like. by virtue of how the story sort of spins out i think it misses it's mark on a lot of stuff here#in the sense that i dont feel like it actually wants to tell that story. it wants to. go in a different direction. or at least walk on top#of those themes instead of through it)#ANYWAY between all of those things. it does kind of live in my head rent free. they did create a compelling setting#SHAME THEY DIDNT WANT TO ACTUALLY EAT ANY OF IT#unrelated but i would've given thi4f a 10/10 if they kept garrett's fucking nail polish from the concept art. cowards. unforgivable#thief the dark project#i still have no idea how to tag the game series as a whole RIP#sorry for the dedicated dark project fans. if you know what the general series tag is. please let me know#garrett thief#basso thief

i don't know about anyone else, but i happen to love superheroes because they're funny little fucked up people who put on silly little costumes and start fights instead of get the therapy they desperately need and their storytelling mileage is endless because they never learn and continue to put on their silly little costumes instead of get therapy
#like. i love superhero comics because these little fucked up people are funny and also fascinating#caitlin.txt#also superheroes are very queer and have very queer appeal just putting that out there#like their double lives and stuff#i feel that

Had an idea for a Poe drawing, since he’s canonically a military grade sniper I wondered when he would’ve entered the military.
Its implied his Guild arc is mostly spent writing his book, and his early twenties were spent with detective work as seen in the flashback to the detective competition.
Thus, he was in the army presumably in his teen years, 15 and up.
And ofc my doodle of it as a little Polaroid with a Kate Bush reference. He couldn’t have his eyes covered and therefore had shorter bangs
Also, bsd takes place 2013 esk and Poe is 28, he would’ve been 15 in the year 2000 and born 1985.

#my art tag#bunny santos (sole survivor)#deacon fo4#desdemona fo4#jokes aside tho like being serious. i do really love des and deacon’s (and bunny’s!) dynamic#i think it’s a fascinating* dynamic to think about. and i’m a fan of like#person who really respects and admires another but would likely never be friends w them outside of this shared goal/group/etc#something something very specific circumstances creating this camaraderie#*fascinating in that i wish it was better expanded upon in canon but. that’s what my own stuff is for#anyway. very much a joke post don’t take this too seriously. she’s happy for them.

#wip#I finished the panels and speech bubbles so I’m taking a break to get an ice cream sandwich then coming back to do lineart#Honestly the worst thing about making these comics is that I can’t depict some of the stuff I really want to depict#Bc decent storytelling requires restraint#But I think a lot about everything and so I put an unnecessary amount of thought into this shit that I can’t reasonably add to the comic#Without making it feel out of character or just sorta tonally weird (admittedly I feel like I stretch it too thin as it is)#The reason I do these besides just bc I like making them and it’s fun is bc I am fascinated with Chilchuck as a character#And I have a very specific idea of his life based on the crumbs Ryoko Kui leaves us#Which I wanna. Like. Force other ppl to witness I guess 😭#But character exploration without any proper storytelling to frame it is boring to me#like I might as well just write it all out in an essay at that point#Anyways all that to say that I am annoyed that my comic about what Chilchuck saw when he said he saw his dad on the other side#Doesn’t leave room for me to show that I think his dads death indirectly led to Meijack being born and clarify why and how I think that hap#And that the whole sequence of events there is too long and unrelated to reasonably fit into those little extras I do sometimes

ways journalists have really described alex turner and miles kane:
"Wearing matching outfits, gazing into each other's eyes, talking about their instant connection… Alex and Miles' claims that they wrote the Shadow Puppets' album about 'a girl' weren't fooling anyone. Quite simply Alex and Miles are hopelessly, madly, enviably in love with each other. Please lads, just be true to yourselves, embrace your feelings, and have a massive snog - we can't bear the tension any more." - NME
“If there’s one sexual dynamic at work tonight at the Usher Hall, it’s homoeroticism. The Last Brokeback Mountaineers are a camp pair of strutting cocks, to be sure.” - The Wee Review
"Speaking to them together feels like interrupting a conversation that's been going on since 2005." - NME
“Looking over at his manspreading counterpart, Kane gleefully points at Turner’s exposed bulge. Not wanting to be rude, I look away.” - SPIN
“Watching them finish each others’ sentences, agonise over their answers to how well they know each other and embrace when it’s time to leave... well, you’d need a heart made of Hoosiers CDs not to find it incredibly sickly sweet.” - NME
“Alex Turner and Miles Kane turn towards each other with fond looks when we suggest they’re best friends. Like doodle in each other’s notebooks BFF status. After spending 15 minutes with them though, we’re pretty convinced they’re going to grow old together in matching tracksuits.” - Sidewalk Hustle
“Miles Kane looks like he’s gagging for a great big man-hug (and maybe more...) off his buddy. These two have spent overly long admiring themselves and each other.” - The Wee Review
“As soon as I decide to just get started without Kane, Turner accidentally Facetimes him from his pocket, and the two erupt into a fit of giggles, our conversation veering off course for the third time in as many minutes.” - Consequence
“While Turner stares on the ground during his answers, Kane watches him like a lovestruck teenager from the side.” - Musikexpress
“Say this for Lennon and McCartney, or Plant and Page: they never had their own romantic rock ‘n’ roll portmanteau. But “Milex”—Miles Kane and Alex Turner, for the uninitiated—have just that enviable kind of bromance. The two even moved to Los Angeles in tandem a few years ago. No wonder multiple “Milex” pages have cropped up on Tumblr, breathlessly re-posting the duo’s every embrace and droll quip; there is fan fiction, too, the kind that would make a coal miner blush.” - Interview Magazine
'"Alex Turner is like a princess in need of his prince Miles's assistance to get down from a tower." - Dutch Review
"You'd be forgiven for barely noticing anything beyond the front of the stage, though. Like a pair of teenagers egging each other on, Turner and Kane are the most infatuated frontmen since the Pete Doherty and Carl Barat." - Hot Press
"If Miles Kane had a 'hard on' for being a front-man before The Last Shadow Puppets, he's grabbed the opportunity Turner's patronage presented him with both hands. So to speak." - Q Magazine
"The feeling is contagious too, as though we're looking in on star-crossed lovers finally reunited." - Hot Press
#okay this is really just the tip of the iceberg#but i think that's quite enough to be getting on with for now#a couple of details:#i've only quoted stuff from interviews that were actively with them or live reviews of concerts#there are also a couple of interviews in here that... yeah. i very much don't like the tone used or how the journalist has portrayed them#(see: the musikexpress one which is just so insulting to miles)#but they had quotes that were too good not to be included here#so yeah#i just wanted to make clear that just because i've included a quote here does not mean i agree with its source material#i'm really just fascinated by the sheer number of journalists who have described them in this light#also there are sources for almost all of these but a couple of them i couldn't find the links i needed but i know they are legit quotes#milex#alex turner#miles kane#the last shadow puppets#tlsp#milex interview#lulu posts

There is a distinct difference between "something good with flaws" and "something bad that's almost good" me thinks
#scrolling through the tags of the ''I could fix this'' post#some obvious ones. mlb. bnha. fnaf. spn. warrior cats. naruto. danny phantom. hazbin. rwby. bbc merlin. star wars. voltron#apparently tmnt 2012#a surprising amount of Red Versus Blue#so much twilight. Which I get#But like. Steven Universe? PJO? Idk man#And like obviously this is very very subjective#But both su and pjo are pretty solid. Like both of 'em have their flaws#I've talked about what I didn't like after finishing pjo with my friends plenty of times (stuff rectified in the tv show 👀)#But you know#just voicing my thoughts#There was even an infinity train s3 and s4 tag. Like hello. Infinity train s3??? That surprises me#WURTHING HEIGHTS????#I keep going down the tags this is fascinating#One guy said TDP. And honestly they're dead to me#This is making me realize that I'm glad I actually love my interests and think they're Good#And while black clover is Bad I love it as is. More of a writing exercise for me and a friend#Just like. what if we took it a little further#okay anyways#fandom#imp tag#torment nexus

hello! i hope it's alright to ask you this but i was wondering if you have any recommendations for books to read or media in general about the history of judaism and jewish communities in egypt, particularly in ottoman and modern egypt?
have a nice day!
it's fine to ask me this! Unfortunately I have to preface this with a disclaimer that a lot of books on Egyptian Jewish history have a Zionist bias. There are antizionist Egyptian Jews, and at the very least ones who have enough national pride that AFAIK they do not publicly hold Zionist beliefs, like those who spoke in the documentary the Jews of Egypt (avaliable on YouTube for free with English subtitles). Others have an anti Egyptian bias- there is a geopolitical tension with Egypt from Antiquity that unfortunately some Jewish people have carried through history even when it was completely irrelevant, so in trying to research interactions between "ancient" Egyptian Jews and Native Egyptians (from the Ptolemaic era into the proto-Coptic and fully Coptic eras) I've unfortunately come across stuff that for me, as an Egyptian, reads like anti miscegenationist ideology, and it is difficult to tell whether this is a view of history being pushed on the past or not. The phrase "Erev Rav" (meaning mixed multitude), which in part refers to Egyptians who left Egypt with Moses and converted to Judaism, is even used as an insult by some.
Since I mentioned that documentary, I'll start by going over more modern sources. Mapping Jewish San Francisco has a playlist of videos of interviews with Egyptian Jews, including both Karaites and Rabbinic Jews iirc (I reblogged some of these awhile ago in my "actually Egyptian tag" tag). This book, the Dispersion of Egyptian Jewry, is avaliable for free online, it promises to be a more indepth look at Egyptian Jews in the lead up to modern explusion. I have only read a few sections of it, so I cannot give a full judgment on it. There's this video I watched about preserving Karaite historical sites in Egypt that I remember being interesting. "On the Mediterranian and the Nile edited by Harvey E. Goldman and Matthis Lehmann" is a collection of memiors iirc, as is "the Man in the Sharkskin Suit" (which I've started but not completed), both moreso from a Rabbinic perspective. Karaites also have a few websites discussing themselves in their terms, such as this one.
For the pre-modern but post-Islamic era, the Cairo Geniza is a great resource but in my opinion as a hobby researcher, hard to navigate. It is a large cache of documents from a Cairo synagogue mostly from around the Fatimid era. A significant portion of it is digitized and they occasionally crowd source translation help on their Twitter, and a lot of books and papers use it as a primary source. "The Jews in Medieval Egypt, edited by: Miriam Frenkel" is one in my to read pile. "Benjamin H. Hary - Multiglossia in Judeio-Arabic. With an Edition, Translation, and Grammatical Study of the Cairene Purim Scroll" is a paper I've read discussing the Jewish record of the events commemorated by the Cairo Purim, I got it off either Anna's Archive or libgen. "Mamluks of Jewish Origin in the Mamluk Sultanate by Koby Yosef" is a paper in my to read pile. "Jewish pietism of the Sufi type A particular trend of mysticisme in Medieval Egypt by Mireille Loubet" and "Paul B Fenton- Judaism and Sufism" both discuss the medieval Egyptian Jewish pietist movement.
For "ancient" Egyptian Jews, I find the first chapter of "The Story of the Jews: Finding the Words 1000 BC-1492 AD” by Simon Schama, which covers Elephantine, very interesting (it also flies in the face of claims that Jews did not marry Native Egyptians, though it is from centuries before the era researchers often cover). If you'd like to read don't click this link to a Google doc, that would be VERY naughty. There's very little on the Therapeutae, but for the paper theorizing they may have been influenced by Buddhism (possibly making them an example of Judeo-Buddhist syncretism) look here (their Wikipedia page also has some sources that could be interesting but are not specifically about them). "Taylor, Joan E. - Jewish women philosophers of first-century Alexandria: Philo’s Therapeutae reconsidered" is also a to read.
I haven't found much on the temple of Onias/Tell el Yahudia/Leontopolis in depth, but I have the paper "Meron M. Piotrkowski - Priests in Exile: The History of the Temple of Onias and Its Community in the Hellenistic Period" in my to be read pile (which I got off Anna's Archive). I also have some supplemental info from a lecture I attended that I'm willing to privately share.
I also have a document compiling links about the Exodus of Jews from Egypt in the modern era, but I'm cautious about sharing it now because I made it in high school and I've realized it needs better fact checking, because it had some misinfo in it from Zionist publications (specifically about the names of Nazis who fled to Egypt- that did happen, but a bunch of names I saw reported had no evidence of that being the case, and one name was the name of a murdered resistance fighter???)
#cipher talk#I find Leontopolis fascinating because after the first time a bunch of Egyptian Jews built a temple in Egypt a second guy did it#And allegedly had a not terrible scriptural justification! And the temple lasted for THREE EXTRA YEARS after Jerusalem was sacked!#Never let anyone tell you there was only one temple#There's also other stuff but this is what I immediately had#Some books I have I'm pretty sure just aren't good to start with lmao they're about very specific stuff#Modern Middle Eastern Jewish Thought: Writings on Identity politics and culture is interesting and includes Egyptian Jews#But it's definitely got a zionist bias. It's mostly essays#I'd definitely recommend reading up on Joseph Cattaui and Murād Farag because they were simply so influential#Even though Farag was a dumbass that wrote the first Arabic defense of Zionism#Ya‘qub Sannu‘ is also fascinating- he spent a lot of his time defending Muslims to European audiences so some people assumed he reverted#He didn't he just took a hard stance on it. Also he got exiled for criticizing the Khedivate#All 3 are in MMEJT iirc

Some Miss Hecate-related Observations about the Pendog Creative Library
Hello you!! So for a while I've been keeping my eyes on this arg! The website has finally launched and I implore you to go take a gander yourself, and even support @withkindereyes and @pendogpuppets!!
okay now let's get into the nitty gritty
Rambling under the cut cause this might be a long one lmao
Miss Hecate. Missy Prissy Hecate.
Out of the characters in the PCL, Hecate here is the one we know the least about, we don't know when she was created, just that she predates Maisy the Mutt (1930's), and any media we have of her is either defaced or a lucky find with strange circumstances.
About The Artists
In almost all of the submissions about Hecate in the Library, the artists are either missing, dead, or unlisted.
Dan Hook & Milton Crane, the artist and writer behind the storybook both have little to no work before the Hecate Storybook and seemed to disappear without a trace.
Robert Webber, the painter behind "Hecate Painting" describes a strange experience that happened just before painting the piece and is listed as having gone missing on the eve of his 75th birthday.
Nathan Bery, the artist behind "Woman in her Thoughts" describes a dream he had that inspired the painting. It is not listed what happened to Nathan but he is referred to in the past tense.
Milford Sykes, the painter behind "Unnamed Work", the piece was only found after his death among his finished works but is the only one that appears to be finished.
There is no artist listed behind Miss Hecate's model sheet, the copyright is blotched out with ink. All we can garner is that this was produced in 1950 and may be one of many model sheets as it's listed as "#28."
This happens again in "Hecate Drawing," as it was received by an anonymous donor who simply claimed it was relevant to the PCL's search for Hecate-related media.
No artist is listed once again for the Hecate Cigarettes ad and it is listed that no artistic depictions of her exist before the 1950s. I tried to identify the font used but if any of you happen to know what it is or if it's a custom font, do tell!!
Image retrieved from the PCL
Ick@ck and the FoundFinders
Ick@ck and the FoundFinders worked with the Pendog Library in restoring and preserving what media they could find of all these characters, there used to be a link for their site but was removed due to an incident we will be discussing later on.
In the Museum Trip update we finally get some more mention about Hecate and how the R.W Winfield Library (presumably anyway) had some information about her. Presumably these were added to the site and then an update where the site was having issues but were promptly fixed for an unknown reason.
"But John!! What's the deal with Hecate and Ick@ack??" I hear you ask? Well, in the description for "Hecate Drawing," where there would be an artist listed and a bit of history on the before and after of said artist. It simply takes a turn into honoring Ick@ck, pointing out how he was a huge fan of Miss Hecate and went to great lengths on finding any media he could alongside FoundFinders about Hecate.
What happened? Well you see, in the update "Exciting News!" Penny M states that Ick@ck and co have managed to recover a lost tape of an original Hecate cartoon, presumably dating many artistic renditions in or after 1950. The team decided to host a party for such a find and to watch the tape, however in the update "Halloween" Penny M was unable to attend the party due to a sickness. In the next updates "Emergency," and "Hiatus", we get some detail on what happened.
On October 31, 2023(?), Ick@ck and several of his friends died under circumstances that were not disclosed to the public. Rumors and speculation have presumably gone around about what happened but Penny M did not wish to share for the sake of not giving these rumors any weight.
Miss Hecate
While we know very little about Miss Hecate herself, the circumstances surrounding her media and what little we can find of her seem to result in strange or terrifying things happening. All the artists past 1950 who either died, went missing, or are undocumented all together, Ick@ck's death.
Her profile especially is very different from the rest. While everyone else has proper profile pictures and even some file to showcase their voices, Hecate's profile is the only one that's disturbed.
With the heavily compressed illustration of her, to the mentioning of the poor condition of her voice line (and the lack of a file but that might be a mistake), and everything else.
Yeah it's kind of a no-brainer, something's up with this lady but realistically, we'd have to wait. Which I personally am more than happy to do!!
If you've got your own theories or observations, feel free to put them down below in the reblogs!!
#oh god this ended up being far longer than i anticipated i think i'm going to be sick [half-joking]#Normally I wait for other people to make stuff like this but I wanted to give it a crack for once#I think i did pretty decently--decent enough I guess#idk I was never very good with args--i prefer to just sit back and look at everything from afar but Miss Hecate fascinates me so very much#I CAN'T GET HER OUT OF MY HEAD it's so over chat it was nice knowing you all/j#pendog creative library#pcl#others art#others ocs#alternate reality game#links#worms...#pyro screams to the abyss

Actually, after taking some time to think about it, I'm kind of glad they answered the alt!jmart question so quickly. I'm nervous enough about what they might do with Basira, Helen, Georgie, and the rest without also having to worry about the two former main characters on top of it all.
