people in Europe dont tend to put ice in their water, so when you get water at restaurants and stuff it's just like, room temperature tap water! was one weird as hell halfway-to-culture-shock for me, as someone who prefers Very Cold Water, when I went to Amsterdam !! lmao also if you ask for ice they Might think you're nuts I never had the stones to I just... accepted my lukewarm water

HM.... man there’s so many!!! maya obvs is so fuckin good watching her open up and her good natured bullying of nick and her lesbianism,,, love her so much! all of the family shit she goes though... she rlly only has nick and pearl as far as family even if mia is watching over her and despite that she is so damn strong!! love maya

conversely farewell my turnabout,,, adrian deserved better and even though we got her cleared of suspicion in the end the fact that we had to accuse her and bring all that to light anyways always made me feel awful which! is how you’re supposed to feel abt it!! it’s such a good case in how it rlly makes u (as nick) question your ideals! and then the duality between phoenix struggling to find his answer and deal with a lose-lose situation and miles being resolute in his new core beliefs,,,, it’s fucking tastey

Alright so I’ve been trying to figure out how to make these words and what my opinions even are considering this game has been out for almost a year now (KH3 existing is wild imagine it turning a year old) so this will be. mostly bullet points + incoherent and unorganized rambling forgive me

BAD THINGS FIRST lets get the salt out of the way

Literally everything with Kairi was oof. I still feel her relationship with Lea is incredibly rushed given the last time they were interacting in canon he was literally kidnapping her but go off I guess nomura they’re brother/sister friendsy now at least the fandom can sell me on that better than you can. I seethe with rage recalling that they didn’t even try to hide that killing her off was a classic case of fridging (“You lack motivation” FUCK OFF) and I have been angry since the day I was spoiled by leak stuff accidentally. I wouldn’t have minded her getting her ass handed to her if they made it look like she tried and gave us some moments where she did defend herself and get some victories and not conveniently cut away from the actually badly needed training montage (surprise! this is why we have training montages!!!!) and I get she was instrumental in rescuing everyone and the fact she wasn’t THAT bad speaks for how much she improved but it still just. bites that she still feels more like a satellite love interest than ever. 

Kairi was bad enough to get her own thing but tbh everyone who isn’t Sora also.. really suffers. The writing is really Sora-centric here and that’s not inherently bad (see good list) but it leaves a lot to be desired, especially since they dog pile the extended cast moments in at the end. There was no big confusion at Ven and Roxas sharing a face, no talks between characters who would have interesting interactions given their histories and circumstances, no obvious sign of development from anyone except maybe sea salt family and Aqua. They’re here to be more one-note than usual and resolve their arcs. Ven in particular (I’m totally not biased clearly /sarcasm) I feel is a big example given he was kinda in a really rough mental state at the end of bbs?? and 3 is exceptionally vague on just how conscious ventus was during his nap so I can’t even answer if he was able to give himself therapy the past 12 years or whatever

Anti Aqua is a damn cool concept but ultimately kinda pointless and I think we could have received it better if it wasn’t spoiled in trailers and wholly out of left field. Plus Sora coming in after what was pretty clearly set up as a Riku moment- while it gave us the incredibly gay press triangle to Sora + use a big keyblade made from ur love moment -was uh! really cheap!!!! and ruined what was clearly set up for being Riku’s thing with an almost nonsensical SIKE ITS SORA (it’s saved from being wholly nonsensical by 0.2′s opening foreshadowing + it still kinda makes sense for sora to at least help but damn if the narrative wasn’t leading us towards a riku moment)

Also everyone was hit really hard with the nerf effect in-narrative so unless you’re the dream team you’re screwed I guess and that. doesn’t quite work since it makes everyone else look... not great. And I think this is kinda a miscommunication on part of Nomura and the fans (IM MAKING ASSUMPTIONS TAKE WITH SALT) in that we kept saying we wanted people “saved” but meant having their arcs resolved in a reasonable way that preserved their agency and power and relationships, but got interpreted literally as “alright Sora comes in and solves every problem, is tough on stains, and makes julienne fries”

And yet there’s also a lot of mean spirited “oh no sora’s dumb and helpless w/out a second braincell” which was kinda funny the first couple times and I failed to pick up on it first go I’ll admit, but honestly? Yeah. they pick on sora too much. Donald and Goofy are the most guilty, and everyone else by virtue of not seeing Sora that much actually in-narrative are off the hook from me because they probably didn’t know how much teasing he’d been getting from his pals, but it felt kinda like they didn’t know what to fall back on between the three besides “oh donald and goofy pick on sora” which is cute once or twice but the amount he gets and how it clearly leads to his breakdown at the end is uhHHHHhhhHH hm.

As always the pacing is pretty awful where the disney worlds are somewhat relevant at best and then the end is 0-1000 but that is a usual KH gripe so its pretty low on the bar

Attraction flow is cute and neat at first but it gets.. really wearing towards the end and in the serious fights at the Keyblade Graveyard BOY are they a mood breaker

the “repeat the plot” worlds- Tangled, Frozen, Pirates -REALLY stick out like a sore, ugly thumb compared to the worlds that went out and did their own creative thing, and Big Hero 6 was.. cute? but kinda maybe too much of a breather.

Frozen also get an extra award for “Audio mixer most in need of firing!” because who the hell allowed the do you want to build a snowman scene.

They did nothing with Scala and I want a refund on that aesthetic if they’re not gonna do anything besides a framing device with it

HEY WAIT THERE WAS GOOD THINGS TOO!

Good news point that may or may not come to pass: Re:Mind DLC might fix some of the above salt! We shall see and probably know by the time this post is a year old sfjhdsakjgh

SORA! Sora was actually a character again!!!! holy cow they pulled up from the utter nose dive that was DDD!! god i love this dork and it was really fantastic to see him back to normal.

The graphical upgrade lost a lot of the squish and stretch that the OG graphics had but you know what? pretty. tastey. good graphics and better at doing more subtle emotions and hey have i mentioned Pirate’s glow up? Pirate’s glow up. The details in Olympus to recreate the swirly aesthetic of the clouds and explosions and lava is a great touch.

Worlds as far as levels go?? really good! They feel legitimately like worlds and explorable and with their own flavors and I LOVE battle and field themes x2 its really great I’m down for less worlds if they keep the quality. Hell we have NPCs!! maybe even too many npcs.

Writing OVER ALL/ON AVERAGE I’d say has improved a lot! It’s still not a literary masterpiece or anything but I found the disney worlds really cute and easier to get invested in even if long term they were less relevant than I hoped they would be. In every world there was at least one scene I found myself actually invested in. Like there was something to the writing that was legitimately more endearing than usual on average, and toy box and monstropolis were strong contenders for really good overall imo

honestly there were moments that- as moments -were incredible. Wayfinder reunion scene will haunt me, and Sea salt’s was good too, final world and rescuing everyone was jaw dropping, getting the LoD Back was also good, Union X, Xigbar exiting left stage pursued by a bear, wayfinder trio making a grave for eraqus, all the gummi ship scenes had great chemistry, beach party ending, hanging out with rapunzel for the first half of Corona is adorable as hell, all the nods to scenes in the movies, the easter eggs, like the game is not consistently amazing but it is peppered with stuff that I feel in a bubble ignoring surrounding context just work really really well

Damn if the end boss rush wasn’t thrilling as hell and honestly??? really good. Hard to parse out first flush but I think this was a good decision and added a lot of blood roaring urgency and wild turns, and even if I want to overhaul a number of things about the endgame I think this can definitely stay

Over all there’s some really glaring issues, but overall it’s KH really at its best. I’m not sure if it’s my favorite entry and I’m still really mixed + befuddled on just how exactly I feel and I think a lot of that is I had pretty high expectations and my own ideas of how it would play out since like. 2012. it’s really hard to detach from those feelings and ideas sometimes. But KH3 wasn’t bad! It could’ve really been worse, and the fact that it got out the door in the state that it was is a good deal

now here’s to the wait for Re:Mind and to see if it’s basically the content we’d get in Final Mix that could definitely bump up my opinion

but also, tbh, in general i think i just put a lot of how i process emotions into how i write taako??? it’s hard to explain but “rough night”* (both the og and the rewrite) has a lot of how i struggle to comfort people sometimes.

01. Tell us about your character’s name. Was it given to them or chosen? Does it hold any special meaning? If your character has aliases or nicknames, how did they get them and what do they mean?

caroc was given to him by his clan, though he dropped his clan name when he left. sound is really important to the maelibi so it probably means something special but fuck if he ever bothered to find out. 

sometimes if he really needs a surname for something, he’ll steal his partner’s. one of the softest things he ever does. 

02. What is your character’s relationship to their homeworld? Do they hold fond memories of it, or do they hate it? Are they still here, and if not, do they miss it?

he’ll get back there someday babey. no but really, people aside, caroc loved his homeworld-- there’s something special about the relationship between the maelibi and the force surrounding iego, and it tugs at him a little no matter how far he gets away. also like... time is weird in the rest of the galaxy? and people are weirder about being munched on out here. please. he just wants a snack. 

there are experiences out here that he wouldn’t get back home, though, so maybe he isn’t Always thinking wistfully of home. he could be convinced to stay. maybe. 

03. Describe your character’s relationship with those who raised them. Was it positive? Negative? Neutral? What sorts of ideologies were they raised with, and do they still stand by them now?

not..... the greatest. maelibi children are few and far between, given how long-lived they are and how few natural threats they face. when caroc was born, he’d been the first child in.... a long time, and there ended up being pressures that came with that. pressures that he appreciated about as much as his elders appreciated caroc’s interest in exploring the surface. 

after enough arguments he hoofed it north and established his own den, far closer to the surface and the other planetary residents than most of his clan dared to sleep. he didn’t keep contact with any but a couple of them, and doesn’t miss them much now. 

there was a lot of group-based thinking baked into him from the moment he was born that never sat well with him, being primarily inclined towards a solitary life. it’s still all in there, though, urging him to look after those nearby and other pesky shit. 

04. What is your character’s relationship with the Force? Is your character Force-sensitive? Whether or not they are, do they believe in it? Do they lean more towards the dark or the light or are they somewhere in between?

the force is caroc’s whole life. i mean, he wouldn’t have called it that before encountering the sith, but he’s very well familiar with the life song that thrums through the universe, using him as its instrument. it sustains him, he sustains it, the force colors everything about how caroc interacts with the world. they’re inseparable. 

dark and light aren’t really concepts that occurred to him before leaving iego, but there is... something different about the way that the sith wield the force. the jedi techniques sound even more foreign, though, so if caroc was forced to define himself he’d say he was gray. 

05. What three word would you use to describe your character? What three words would your character use to describe themself? What three words would someone close to them use?

me: cranky, slow, curious 

caroc: leave me alone

dhirh, the only person caroc suffers intimacy for, says: a whole meal 

06. Describe your character’s aesthetic. Do they tend towards fashion or function? Do they like to accessorize? How does this extend into their own personal spaces, such as their home or their workspace?

if he could get away with wandering around nude he would. no one’s allowed to touch his bunk cause he’s stolen like ten blankets and has them arranged as the Perfect cozy hole. 

07. What are your character’s vices? Guilty pleasures? Bad habits? Weak spots?

what.... aren’t.... i mean like his whole personality is drive people away before they can hurt you so. i mean i guess at least he doesn’t really do alcohol or anything but that’s only cause it has no effect on him? 

in terms of more concrete bad habits, though, he tries to keep it to himself but he’s a habitual tinkerer/fidgeter. only he’s not really that keen on the putting it back together part. what i’m saying is if you hand him a piece of technology and don’t impress upon him how important it is that it stay together, you will be getting it back as component parts. he and luro went through like three rounds of com sets before this was figured out. and then one more out of spite. 

08. Tell us about your character’s relationship with food. What are their favorites? Do they enjoy cooking? Are they adventurous? Will they eat absolutely anything or are they hard to please?

people..... tastey. or at least, their force essence is. the more force sensitive the meal, the better. caroc doesn’t need to eat all that often-- strangely, even less often since leaving iego, but that’s a mystery for another time-- but when he does, he’s not very picky. whoever happens to be wandering nearby is perfectly fine. or at least it WAS before he had a JOB and RULES. 

now he has to like.... ask permission and shit. unless they’re an enemy. at least he can refrain from killing a friendly snack, though, when enemies are thin on the ground. 

09. How does your character feel about engaging in relationships—romantic and / or sexual—with others? What is their history like? Do they fall in love easily? Are they constantly in and out of relationships?

caroc loves One person, so it has been, so it always will be, unless they break up with him and then he’ll go back to not believing in the concept of love. 

i’ll have to get back to u on the sex question cause idk what the maelibi even get up to 

10. What is your character’s pain tolerance like? Can they hold their own in a fight, despite injury? If someone hurts them with the aim of gaining information, how much can they take before they cave?

pain isn’t a very common experience for caroc. it’s less like he has a high tolerance and more like it’s just.... really difficult to get through his blaster-proof hide. pain is rare enough that he has a Big reaction when it does happen, as can be attested to by a couple of the luro’s coworkers. when you bust through the hide he’s very vulnerable. 

and honestly chances are good that whatever someone would be hurting him to try and learn, he’d just tell them right off the bat. he doesn’t really want to experience much pain again, if he can avoid it, so it’s either he’s not locked up well enough and they’re dead or he capitulates immediately. unless it’s about dhirh and then everything else becomes unimportant and he’ll die first. 

11. What is your character’s weapon of choice? Are they more skilled as a melee fighter or do they have more skill with ranged weapons? What’s their fighting style like? What sort of training do they have behind them?

body...... he doesn’t get ‘weapons’ 

which i suppose you wouldn’t if you had like, talons and the ability to drain someone’s life essence

caroc’s durable enough that his combat strategy is usually just to let the opponent tire itself out and then move in for the kill. he’s generally pretty slow but does have occasional bursts of speed, they wear him out tho so he usually doesn’t bother.

12. Does your character have any words or catchphrases that they say frequently? Tell us about how they picked them up.

you know that phase it seems like every three year old has where the only thing they can say is ‘why?’ and they say it in response to literally everything? that’s pretty much caroc when he’s forced to interact with someone 

he is genuinely curious but he’s just also invested in annoying the shit out of whoever he’s talking to

i mean even he gets tired of shenanigans like that eventually, but.... he usually has more patience than his opponent does

13. Tell us about a negative experience your character has had with either the Jedi or the Sith, and how this has affected their standing. Whether currently aligned or unaligned with either faction, if forced to choose, how would they side?

caroc doesn’t think he’s met a jedi yet (if he has, he wasn’t paying attention). he doesn’t think much about them other than wondering if they’d taste different than sith and unaligned people do. 

the sith have kidnapped and tortured him and the person he loves most. but one is also promising a reunion, so. the jury is out. 

though he’s technically aligned with the sith at the moment, all things equal and situations resolved, he’d probably align with the jedi just out of spite. not that they would be likely to take him, but, you know. theoreticals. (also he just really wants to know what a jedi would taste like) 

14. How would your character react to seeing a relative or friend on the opposing side of a battle or mission?

unlikely. he’d do his job, though, to the minimum requirement. caroc wouldn’t willingly kill someone he considered a friend, but if they were attacking him specifically he’d be willing to knock some sense into them. more often than not in a battle, though, he’s acting as a shield more than a weapon so it would probably be a moot point. 

unless the friend was dhirh or Maybe one specific other maelibus, in which case he’d likely switch sides immediately. 

this is subject to change as he potentially makes new friends, as unlikely as that seems

15. Describe a memory that your character finds embarrassing.

literally every social interaction 

especially any one where he genuinely doesn’t know what’s happening 

16. What goals does your character hold for themself and what steps have they taken towards achieving them? How far are they willing to go to reach them? What is their be-all and end-all?

find dhirh. no method is off limits. next question. 

after that?? doesn’t exist yet. not worth worrying about, so no concrete plans. only vague ideas. 

17. What is the one thing your character would change about their life if they were given the chance? What other lives could they have lived as a result?

caroc doesn’t think about things like that. things happened. it’s not worth wondering about alternatives. if he’s going to do any dreaming it’s going to be about the future, where things are still mutable. 

18. Living in such a high-conflict time, how does your character feel about doing what they must to survive? Will they hurt or kill others—either directly or indirectly—to protect themself and / or those close to them? If so, do they regret it when all is said and done?

caroc has been killing people since he was a child, it’s second nature. 

only.... something is changing, a little bit. as he gets to know people, for the first time, that he would’ve considered exclusively prey before. he’ll never admit to it, but questions do keep him up at night. who were all those people that he killed? what lives did they lead before he ended them? 

it may not change his behavior, but caroc has a newfound respect for the fact that other people also have lives and loves and that that’s not always something to be taken lightly. 

19. What is the biggest problem your character is currently dealing with?

his whole life. is a problem. at the moment. everything

it’s cool tho he can wait it out

20. Give us 3+ headcanons of any length or subject matter.

1. tinkering: this isn’t something caroc just spontaneously picked up after leaving iego, it’s something that’s been part of him for a long time. at home, his den was littered with machinery and engine parts from dismantled shipwrecks. he’s always been curious, about the surface and the other life on iego especially, and one of his few joys came from reconstructing machinery (all wrong) to make himself small useless machines. not that he’ll share this with anyone new willingly. 

2. Force Flavor(tm): due to his.... appetites, one of caroc’s abilities is a sense for the ways in which the force clings to people, and the different ways it dances around them depending on how they call to it. he characterizes the force, always, as a song, but he can hear an individual’s song well before he takes a bite. it’s become an unexpectedly useful tool in managing social interactions since he left home. 

3. games: caroc loves to play dumb, seriously, it’s one of his favorite things to do. okay context: remember that horrorterror trauma I've mentioned? that's West's fault. they accidentally put Fern in danger and while she's super tough there's not a lot anyone can do against a horrorterror. the whole group got involved.

The aftermath is worse than the fight, because now they have the time to process just how bad everyone looks.

West only sees Fern. She's shaking, unsteady even as Haze takes most of her weight. Her eyes are closed tight, her face half-pressed into Haze's chest as her own rises and falls in sharp bursts. Her green robes are stained black with what could be either ink, oil, or blood- all are present on her skin, which doesn't help. 

Everything's deathly silent, save for the hiccupy sobs coming from Fern's nearly-limp figure.

Fern had a rough time.

West takes a step to go comfort her, but Haze points an ink-stained boomerang at them with a glare of pure hatred. "Don't fucking touch her. Don't look at her, don't touch her, don't approach her, don't even THINK about her." 

Fern whimpers, and Haze's expression shifts to concern in an instant, boomerang disappearing and an arm wrapping around her. Haze mumbles something inaudible to her, quiet and gentle.

Haze is naturally loud and aggressive tones are rough to hear :(. also can you tell how rough it was to write around Haze?

West shrinks back. "But-"

"What? But what?" Haze's glare is back, hold on Fern entirely protective now. "What are you going to say? That she needs you? That you didn't mean to hurt her? News flash: it's your fault she's hurt. It's your fault we're all hurt. It's your fault we're in this fucking game in the first place! It's your fault my dad is DEAD!" West flinches and Haze's eyes water, tears pooling up. "It's all your fucking fault. Get out."

here it is! the part I wrote this for! rip to West but they convinced everyone to play SBURB so :/. nah I love them.

West's gaze flicks from Fern to Haze. Their voice is a whisper as they ask, "What?" 

"You heard me. Get out of my fucking sight." Haze's voice never wavers. "Get out of this session. Kill yourself for all I care."

Haze has had a long fucking day. this is not the first time West has done shit like this but it is the first time it's been this severe. still. Haze. please.

"Haze," June starts, tentatively. Xe glances at West. "We still need to fight the Black King. We need them."

Haze scowls at xir. "Tough shit."

"Just for the battle. Nothing more. We just need our universe, and then you never have to speak to West again." June reaches out a hand, clasps something unseen, and tugs.

June does xir Hope-y thing! manipulation is June's strong suit and while xe's not CLOSE to West, Haze is going a little overboard and June's really the only one who can do something about it. so xe does.

Something in Haze's eyes shifts. "Fine. Just for the fight. 'Til then, I don't want to see their face."

West's face gets just slightly paler. "You're using me? You can't just-"

"Should have thought of that before you pulled that stunt." Haze meets their eyes. "Three seconds. Get out of here."

"Alex, tell them they're being crazy!"

"Two."

Alex shakes their head slightly, staring at Fern. Panic rises in West's chest. "Don't abandon me! Please, I didn't mean it, How was I supposed to know-"

Alex is straight-up not having a good time. honestly they're scared West might cause something worse and scared of how Haze will react if they say something. more worried about Fern than West right now, too. also mmmm the projection onto West is tastey. abandonment issues who?

"One."

West opens their mouth to protest, but then Fern turns her head to look at them. Silently, she shakes her head just to bury her face back into Haze's side, and West's blood runs cold. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," they whisper.

COLD. Fern doesn't want to make them leave but she can't take this right now, she can't take the arguing, the fighting... and she knows West needs to not interact with Haze anymore, at the very least. she doesn't have the energy to settle this.

"Zero." The boomerang appears in Haze's hand again, and Haze raises an arm to throw, but West is already off in the opposite direction.

Who is the easiest/hardest character for you to write about? Why?

easiest is probably West! they're excitable like me and I like their interests too. they're fun and their voice comes naturally. hardest is probably Alex because they don't get as much screentime and that's rough.

What’s your favorite minor character you’ve written?

oh for SURE Fate. she's so fun and also fleshed out entirely for a superhero au event. she's just.... I love her so much. Theo is also very cool but c'mon Fate is feral and great.

Have you cried while writing a fic?

not because of the fic, but yeah. whenever I get strong negative emotions I like to throw that into my writing and hoo boy Aila are you okay??

If you had to remix one of your own fics, which would it be and how would you remix it?

don't quite know what remixing a fic entails but hmm........ defo Enny's scheming. I'd like to write it with Enny narrating again but in a different way, y'feel? not like the "telling Deux" way but the "actually going through with it and having emotional turmoil" way. also every time I read the Juli bit I fuckin cringe.
