why are all the stars blowing up? the stars are blowing up because it's just the natural end of the universe. the game foreshadows this in the hanging city: "SOLANUM: As [the] early universe expanded, it also cooled down…Since then, space has continued to expand at a faster and faster rate…This universe will keep getting colder and larger, until one day, the stars and the life they support will all die." solanum is describing the heat death of the universe, which is what's implied is happening in current times. it's a little confusing, because in reality it would be a very slow process and not happen at the same time, so it may look like something is causing it in-game.

text in the vessel directly states it: "It’s clear the universe is dying." this text is from modern-day nomai, as stated in the ship log. (the vessel is still able to receive transmissions)

why does the interloper arrive right as our sun blows up? it doesn't, the interloper has been in the solar system since before the hearthians evolved from the pools of timber hearth. are you thinking of how the interloper falls into the sun a few moments before the sun explodes perhaps? the interloper orbits so close to the sun that it just gets consumed when the sun expands! it doesn't cause the explosion though, as the sun had been expanding since before that, which means it's already on the path to supernova. maybe you're asking why the interloper enters the solar system right after the nomai *try* to blow up the sun. we don't know, bad luck i guess lol. just a reminder, the nomai died 300,000 years before the game takes place!

why do the nomai die? speaking of the nomai dying, yes it was ghost matter from the interloper. we don't know why it arrived when it did, or where it's from. the core of the interloper was previously a spherical stone casing that held the ghost matter inside. i'll let the game explain it: "Whatever the matter inside this stone casing is, it’s more than just profoundly unstable; it’s under tonnes of pressure. Look at this density scan. I’ve never seen anything this tightly compacted before!" "If this stone were to rupture, the lethal matter within would rapidly expand, completely blanketing this star system almost instantaneously."

whyd the nomais plan not work the first time? the nomai's plan didn't work, and we don't know the exact details as to why. all we know is that the sun station couldn't prompt the sun to explode. everything else they had worked, it just needed a power source, but i guess they just really underestimated what it would take to cause a supernova. some people believe Idaea sabotaged the station because they were so against its creation, but i don't subscribe to that theory.

8. best soundtrack: ohhh my god. tough. it might be cheap to say final fantasy tactics because i've been thinking about it a lot lately, but i do think that soundtrack is really very thoughtful and intricate, and makes smart use of its leitmotifs. it's a bit of an acquired taste imo because it's not as immediately catchy as some other video game osts, but it's meatier than most vg osts i've heard and i do love it a great deal; like the game itself every time i listen to it i feel like i unearth more in its musical themes.

in terms of other soundtracks: ffvii's ost is probably my favorite of the mainline ff series for nostalgia alone (though ffvi and ffix also have great soundtracks). i also really enjoy the soundtracks of hades, outer wilds, stardew valley, tales of the abyss, and undertale. and big shout out to the dragon age inquisition bard songs, elizaveta khripounova killed it

22. if you could immerse yourself in any game for a day, which one and what would you do: jeez. i don't think i would want to be in any of these games, i'm too much of a coward. it might be fun to be a tactics bard since i'm a musician IRL (yeah okay so bard's gender-locked but here's the thing: i'm butch i'm allowed) but i also don't want to get killed because a huge bird decided to fling a meteor at me. stardew valley would be okay if i could just stand on the dock staring at the ocean or the river for six hours, but it wouldn't be especially scenic. if i could like, breathe underwater or something, abzu would be lovely, i'd love to just swim in the ocean forever... explore the ruins

23. biggest disappointment you've had in gaming: hmmm. ffvii remake ended up being okay, like i have my complaints but i also think it did a number of things extremely well, so not that. i started mass effect andromeda this year, but i knew that game was bad, everyone knows that game is bad, so i have no one to blame but myself for playing it and being like "this is bad." man you know what i think banner saga? my sister recommended me that series, she really loves it, and i played through the trilogy last year and came away with a bad taste in my mouth. there's stuff i liked about it i guess but it felt incredibly reactionary and weirdly hostile & conservative. i talked about it with my sister and she was like "oh yeah never thought about it like that before" but it was still like... a shame that a game series she swore by felt kind of shitty to play. don't think i'll come back to that one

2019 VG Journal 3

Three years running! New year, more games old and new to waste my unlimited potential on! Once again the goal is to play 52 games before the end of the year. 52 games to average a game a week (since you know...there are 52 weeks in a year). But due to being a busy human being with adult responsibilities, a social life, pets and mostly not having it together all the time the one bone I throw myself is “Big (unbeatable) time sinks.” A great example of this is the game I’ve already been playing obsessively at the start of this year: Animal Crossing New Leaf. That game does not have a traditional beginning, middle, and end. In fact it just keeps going and going and there is no end. If I put over 10 hours into game like that or an online multiplayer only type game - then it’s counted at the end of the year as on of my 52 games. For instance I already put 20+ into ANCL for the start of this year -.-...so yeah...it counts. Here we go! I hope my 2019 is better than 2018 and I hope the games are even better!

January 6, 2020 - The 2019 Recap:

Without getting too much into 2019 itself - WHAT A GARBAGE YEAR FOR LIFE IN GENERAL. Glad that’s over. AS for the video games, it was a great transitional year for me to be able to catch up on a lot of stuff and continue to push off other titles I should be finishing before the end of the generation -.-.  Not counting my big unbeatable time sinks, I was able to complete 45 games across 10 different platforms. More interestingly is it was actually 12 different platforms as I played a gba title on my gamecube, and got the switch lite (transitioning from the Switch). I am pretty happy I was able to get my hands on so many consoles this year. This marks a new a record for myself! Of course this was no coincidence. Though it took significantly longer than expected we did move to a bigger place over here in California. This is not permanent or even where we want to be in the next year or two but I made sure to make this a comfy place for me where I have easy access to my stuff.

My handhelds, and most video games are now easily accessible. The current generation systems funny enough are the games that are the most difficult to reach at the moment, but I digress.

I made a conscious decision to try and play less online focused games or games that didn’t have an end in sight. And I accomplished that goal by cutting that list almost entirely in half. THAT said...the Call of Duty that came out at the end of this year basically ruined that for me. For the first time in the history of me doing this list, I was on track or ahead this whole year. I was actually genuinely averaging almost a game or two a week! Then I got my new computer. 

Then I started playing Modern Warfare. And I spent so much time in that game I almost considered putting it on my list twice. I played so much multiplayer that I almost didn’t reach 52 games this year! At the last minute I almost ruined my streak! But we made it. And I’m good for 3 years in a row now.

I usually don’t do this but before I end this I just want to say my games of 2019 were Ace Combat, Outer Wilds, Resident Evil 2, and Devil May Cry V. Outer Wilds and Ace Combat are necessities. If I made a proper list - they would both be number 1. Please go out and play these games!
