So we’re bugging out here. The old Vibroplex is working great and I got the stinger here from AI4UH to slow it down to party pace. Adam sells them on eBay and it works by adding length to the pendulum arm. Simple and elegant.

6/18/22: The strange device in the photo is another thing that rolled out of my visit home. It is a telegraph key. A telegraph key is used to send Morse code. This particular model is known to its users as a “speed bug” or a “speed key.” Through an intricate set of levers, fulcrums, springs and weights, it allows extremely fast dots (short clicks or dits) in Morse code. Just as importantly, an equally intricate set of adjustments lets the user match their dot speed to their dash speed (long clicks or dahs) so that the code is “readable.” The ideal is to send dahs that are three times as long as dits. Without that flow(1), you could have the Morse code equivalent of stuttering. Or, worse, making dahs and dits indistinguishable would result in a totally garbled message.
My father had one of these because he was a telegrapher on the railroad. Telegraphers were key people in managing rail traffic, which in the United States was based heavily on schedules and rules. When he started with the Baltimore and Ohio railroad in 1949 or 1950 he was probably dealing with operators who could send over forty words a minute. That required a tool that let you match that speed. More importantly, sending code for hours at a time is fatiguing. The speed bug is not only fast, but requires less physical effort to manipulate the key. So dad bought one of these.
He still had it—and it was still widely used—when my brother and I would sometimes go to work with him in the late 60’s and early 70’s.(2) In my mind I associated it with his nearly 50 year career with the railroad. So it was the one thing of my father’s that I wanted when he died in 2018.
I learned from mom on my trip home that toward the end of his time with the Chessie System his speed bug had been stolen. It would never be mine.
The story takes a turn there though. I found out that Vibroplex is still in business. They still make the Standard S model! Because of the low energy required, Morse code is still in use by ham radio operators. And the speed bug is still sought after by operators who send a lot of code. So I bought one. (And this being 2022 not 1952, it arrived home the day after I did.)
Other than the wear and tear, and a different serial number, this bug is the exact item my father used. It reminds me of a stand-up comedian back when metaphysics became popular in the 70’s. He said that he had the hatchet George Washington used to chop down the cherry tree. The head, he said, was different. And the handle had been replaced. But, he quipped, it occupies the same space.
In that spirit, I am happy to have this reminder of my father and a life well lived. Love you, Dad!
(1) This is so much a thing that experienced operators can tell who is sending code by its rhythm.
(2) This was a tower on the east end of the Connellsville Yard across from the Anchor Hocking plant (where my aunt and uncle worked).

First sprint in years. Remembered why I don't like my Alinco HF. It's power settings are 100/10/1-W and for all the bells and whistles my TenTec is just a nicer radio with 4-W out and a smooth full break in.

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Dan Robinson who notes that there currently a Squires Sanders SS-1R on eBay. He notes: Ultra rare amateur receiver. The only thing rarer is a SS-IBS, the SW bands version. This is certainly a “fixer upper” in that it will need a re-stringing and likely at least a recapping. […]

Well, sort of? There's a famous logbook from the Harvard Mark II, dated 1947, with a fried moth taped to the page, with the explanatory text, "1545 Relay #70 Panel F (moth) in relay. First actual case of bug being found." That implies that the term was around already, and the great Adm. Grace Hopper, who is mostly responsible for promulgating the story and popularizing the term among mainstream audiences, also said that "bug" was used for radar glitches during WWII.
The term apparently goes back (in tech) to a joke by telegraph operators — there's a class of mechanical semi-automatic telegraph keys known as "bugs". (The ones still made by Vibroplex even have a beetle on the logo.) Manual telegraph keys are tap for a Morse code dot, hold down a little bit for a dash — but on a bug, if you keep holding it down, you get a whole string of dots, making a complete hash of whatever letter you were trying to send. So (the story goes) experienced telegraphers, feeling superior, would look at any scrambled code coming down and joke, "Must be a bug on the line!"
(The Jargon File traces the concept back to Shakespeare and the Welsh mythological monster the bugbear, but I think that's maybe a reach.(
Troubleshooting PC issues back in the day was a trip and a half. “Why do the colours on my screen look so funny?” sir, it’s because your hilariously overpowered desktop speakers contain a magnet the size of a hockey puck, and the magnetic field is deviating the electron beam in your CRT monitor – move your speaker two inches to the left and you’ll be fine.
