12. The Brilliant Veranda

It was 6:00am when we reached Panvel. It is a part of Mumbai, but on the outskirts. Shaheen woke me up and was checking if I would like to drink some tea. I said ‘no’. I asked her how long it will take for us to reach. She told me it would take another 2 hours to reach Mumbai central.

I got up and started thinking about what I would do after reaching Victoria Terminus.

We reached Mumbai central and as promised Shaheen was going to drop me to Victoria Terminus. We got into a yellow taxi and Shaheen started telling me about places in Mumbai. She told me about Marine Drive which is a drive built on stretch of the Arabian Sea. She also told me about all the actors and actresses who live in Mumbai.

I was listening to her, but I kept thinking about my next plan. I was lost!

Shaheen dropped me at Victoria Terminus and gave me her number written on a piece of paper. She asked me to call her if I need anything.

I got down from the taxi and took my suitcase. I got down at Victoria Terminus and looked at the building. It is a beautifully built gothic style architecture. It had beautiful arches and similarities of a British built buildings in India. This one was unique. It looked like a palace from outside. I had never seen anything like this before. I looked at it for about 10 minutes and started to walk inside. I could see a completely different environment around me. Everyone was busy. People kept coming in and going out.

I went inside and made my way to the waiting hall for females. I went inside the waiting hall and sat in a corner. Everyone started staring me and I pretended not to look. They spoke in Marathi and I couldn’t understand.

A lady kept coming every few minutes and gave water to everyone.

A lady sitting next to me asked me if I was travelling alone and I denied. I told her that I was waiting for my cousin who is on his way.

Time passed and I was sitting there for the next three days.

Finally, the water serving lady confronted and I told her everything about what happened with me.

Here we are after stealing my father’s money, running away to a different city and telling about my darkest years to a stranger.
