MOST of my Kirby collection. Some new Keshi figures, Nendoroid, and other things like shirts, etc. not included. Still, this is plenty to show. Have been a fan since original Dreamland and am still going strong.

So I’ve been dumb excited for this game to come out. Been waiting at LEAST a year or two for a release date.
So if you love yourself buy the physical. The physical releases in June. It’s a Japanese copy BUT it has English subtitles. It supports other languages too! I was shocked to see a physical at all much less one dropping so soon. Especially with English support.
Anyway I wanted to spread the love for the homies that want to collect physical over digital.

A Retro Gaming Perspective
Online social media tends to show three types of retro game collectors.
One being crypto bros who use the buying and selling of retro games and many other collectables as a money laundering scheme.
Then there are those that collect every game ever made usually through bargain hunting. These people tend to have huge man caves dedicated to showing off their collection of games and endless consoles.
The third is the person who started collecting a particular system to get the games they played but end up going after every game for that system.
Now, there is nothing wrong with the second and third options, collect what you want. I'm more just pointing out the believed standards social media has trained people on.
I also want to show that there are other reasons people collect retro games. For example I collect retro games to collect memories.
Tumblr media
And when I am feeling bad or having medical issues there are times where I will be drawn to one of games on my shelf, pull it off, hold it, stare at it, and remember the memories attached to it. Usually this is done to try to make myself feel better though not always.
Tumblr media
When it comes to the original Nintendo Entertainment System what games must be complete in box and of acceptable condition versus just being a cartridge of acceptable condition comes down to whether it's associated with good or bad thoughts.
I won't go into detail but this Bart Vs The Space Mutants was at the heart of a series of events involving blood, child protective services, and me being a dumb kid being convinced to lie to CPS.
There are a lot of dark thoughts connected to this cartridge but there are also lessons, and reminders of strength as well.
The truly heartbreaking pieces in my collection though are pieces that represent happy times, and memories with a specific person but the other person has no recollection.
Tumblr media
Ka-Blooey here comes with a whole host of memories of a person who doesn't remember it at all. This game was a central point in our lives for years and...all those memories are lost apparently.
For some reason that makes Ka-Blooey more important to me though it also hurts more often than not when I look at it. A history half forgotten.
I will end up with quite the eclectic collection by the time I am done. A dozen or so games from one system, four from another. Not the type of collector or collection you will see on Instagram or TikTok but it is a collection that makes me happy.
Given that I wanted to share with you another way in which people collect retro games I think I've done what I wanted to. Thanks for reading and if you are on any sort of collection grind, happy hunting!

This was a Halloween gift to myself last year 👻 I still need to finish it! It’s an absolutely phenomenal game. So happy to add it to my collection.

THIS CANNOT CONTINUE!!🤬
I don't normally get ranty but I wanted to bring it up barely anyone seems to be bringing it up. The way Konami handled the physical release of the Switch version of MGS Master Collection Vol. 1 is incorrigible and abysmal. There is nothing on the cartridge, how can they keep getting away with their antics? It's just a digital download with extra steps!!
Tumblr media
They might as well just save more money by making it a code in a box than spending money on producing cartridges with nothing on them. To make it worse, PlayAsia can't save us this time because the Asia version is the same. A special kind of incompetence indeed for Konami. For crying out loud the .Hack Last Recode collection on Switch from Bandai Namco has four games, 3 of which are PS2 games, and it's all on one cart, to give an example. And you know they're not gonna rectify this cuz it's already set in stone and they have two other console versions (PS5 and XBOX) that don't have this issue. Jeez it's like they saw what Capcom was doing with their collections in the early days of the Switch and said "hold my pachinko machine."
There is no respect or effort being given. To them the Switch version is the runt of the litter, an acceptable loss because they think they'll make most of their profits off the other console versions. To Konami, Metal Gear is not a cherished and renowned series, in their money-grubbing eyes it's a popular brand to be sold and so, they think people will buy anything with MGS plastered on it even if it's half-assed, that's the obvious and harsh reality of it. They want a quick profit and take us for a couple of chumps and suckers. Unfortunately, there are a small few I've seen who have said they're okay with it as long as they have the case and cartridge, instead of demanding better.
Think about it. The last physical releases they've done have been for Classic Castlevania and Symphony of the Night but not the Advance collection. My guess is because Classic Castlevania and Castlevania Symphony of the Night are the most recognized, marketable and profitable, and that's why the Advance games got nothing. Hopefully this ages poorly in the future, but for now that's what it seems.
"Why not just buy it on PS5 or XBOX?"
The problem isn't a lack of alternative console options. The issue is how BS this practice is and how blatant the lack of effort is when compared to what the competition has done as of late. How can you sell a PHYSICAL game cart with NO games on it? You may as well not have a physical option. Also, not everyone has a PS5 or XBOX and it's not right to be screwed over for your choice of console, especially if it's not because of technical limitations, but instead it's because of the lack of effort and care by the company. That's the bottom line. Konami is pulling a Konami again.
I hope the upcoming Snake Eater remake is good because if it isn't it's obvious why that happened. Konami sees a profitable entry, not an acclaimed, classic title that left a deep impression on gaming and players. Again, I hope this ages poorly and I'm proven wrong.
Tumblr media
UPDATE(7/8/23)
If Konami couldn't get any more scummier, they omitted having to download the games in the Amazon descriptions. So people are going to fooled into buying the Switch version thinking all the games are on the cartridge.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!???🤬🤬

Just got Harvest Moon: Back to Nature for the Playstation. It's a pretty fun game, like most of the older Harvest Moon games. What's a bit funny about it is that the subtitle for the game is written in comic sans on the box. This is of course not true for the Japanese one, that got a much nicer and cleaner looking logo. Much like many other games in the series there was also a GIRL version in Japan — which is literally called "For Girl". I need to get all of the girl versions at some point, haha.

There are those who would tell you that “Celeste” (2018) is a game about climbing a mountain. And while that may describe the tip of this particular Everest, it fails to incorporate the totality of this game which also includes an introspective storyline, puzzle platforming with new game play gimmicks constantly introduced, a soundtrack that absolutely slaps, and built-in, optional challenges that primarily involve getting strawberries.
Originally developed during a game jam for the Pico 8 virtual game system, “Celeste” took heavy inspiration from “Super Mario Bros. 3” (1988) including the tight, but simple controls and the game’s creative approach to problem solving.
Streaming tonight at 7:30 Central, we’ll attempt to climb a mountain and learn things about ourselves along the way in “Celeste.” And when we’re reached the summit, we’ll celebrate with a little “Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon” (2018).  twitch.tv/lifebeginsat8bit

Holiday Pickups 2022
Happy New Year!
A little late, but thought I’d share some pickups from right before Christmas to now.
Tumblr media
I’m very lucky to be a mod of a great writing community on discord and this is the second year that we’ve engaged in Secret Santa across the server. @grimbims, who was my Secret Santa, sent me Hades on the Switch! I was also delighted to discover that the physical copy of the game comes with a code for the soundtrack, as well as a small artbook featuring all of the game’s characters. It’s also my first roguelike (again, recalling that whole “broadening your gaming horizon” thing), and while Hades is difficult for my novice skills, it’s a terrible amount of fun. I’m not too bad at it, either. I favor the spear coupled with blessings from Artemis and have made it just past Asterius on Elysium, but that battle of attrition always leaves me struggling to survive afterward.
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is the other game I’m shuffling between right now. I had asked for XC3, but there was a mixup during my gifter’s order and I ended up with this one instead, which may secretly have been what I actually wanted. I know that XC3 is supposed to be amazing, but I like to get the whole story, even if the internet tells me that I don’t need to play 1 and 2 before diving in. I’m about twenty hours deep so far and can confidently say that I’m going to play it to the end. The world and premise are interesting, the characters and story are compelling, even if the dialogue is a bit painful at times (my writer's brain can be overly critical even at the best of times), and the gameplay loop is satisfying. It feels very MMO to me. As an avid FFXIV player, that’s only a good thing.
I was excited for Harvestella the moment it debuted on the Nintendo Direct back in June of ‘22 (oh my gosh, is that really “back in” already???). Even though I’ve only dabbled in a handful of farming/life simulators, I’ve obsessed over the ones that I have played (minus Stardew Valley - I know, I’m awful, but it just never grabbed me like it did others. Conan Exiles, though? I lost days to that game.) The anime aesthetic coupled with farming and crafting in Harvestella spoke to me like a game hasn’t in a long, long time, and I knew I needed it as soon as it launched. This was later confirmed when I blasted through the Switch demo shortly after. As excited as I was, though, I’ve decided to set this one aside until I finish the first Xenoblade. Then I’ll discover what was really going on with those Seaslights.
I played Fire Emblem: Three Houses for the first time just a couple months ago. The two weeks I poured into it were gone all too quickly, and while I told myself and friends that I wanted to do a replay for the other endings and storylines, I just couldn’t bring myself to betray Edelgard. After 70+ hours together, her character meant too much to me. Color me excited when I realized that Fire Emblem: Three Hopes was another story featuring those characters, but in the style of the Dynasty Warriors games. (Note: to be honest, I’m not sure what the deal is with the story, but I’m excited to find out!) So once I get to this one, I’m sure it’s going to be another non-stop ride.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not gifts per se, but I did pick up a Byleth amiibo with some Christmas Cash, as well as a copy of Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright for the 3DS from the local used game shop. I wanted to get a copy of an FE Fates game so I could download the third not-so-secret storyline to that series, Fire Emblem Fates: Revelations. If you didn’t know, the online shop for the 3DS (and the Wii U, I believe) are being shut down in March of 2023. Apart from purchases made before that date, nothing will be available on those marketplaces to buy or download. Part of a string of odd choices made by Nintendo, recently.
Tumblr media
I’ve been eyeing these books since the newest printing was announced sometime last year. Both volumes of the Encyclopaedia Eorzea are gazetteers of the world of FFXIV, and feature stunning art taken from the game. They’re filled to the brim with world lore, and remind me more of a D&D campaign guide than anything else. I have half a mind to use them to run a game set in Eorzea using these books as source material. Maybe then I can get my group to join me in the MMO.
Tumblr media
This mug is from Etsy and brings me immeasurable joy. It features a memed version of Gaius van Baelsar’s famous line from the end of FFXIV: A Realm Reborn and makes me cackle every time I read it. I actually received two of these in duplicate, a 16oz and a 12 oz. The larger has worked its way into my mug rotation (because we all have a thousand mugs at this point, right?), and the smaller has earned its place among my small-yet-growing FFXIV collection next to my handcrafted moogle (a birthday present from my sister). From his perch, Gaius will always be there to remind me to drink more coffee.
Tumblr media
Probably the coolest gift I received this year was an ocarina from the Nintendo 64 classic, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time. I’m not sure if the picture does it justice, but the craftsmanship is stunning. The blue gloss is deep and shines wonderfully under light. It fits perfectly on the shelf with my other Zelda mementos. The box came with sheet music for several melodies from the game, so I’m definitely going to try and learn a couple tunes. Physical items from games like this are the best. I’ll admit, I have a soft spot for action figures, but having something tangible from a game world you’ve invested hours into is so, so cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The final, and arguably largest, pickup for this update is a Nintendo Wii that I was able to find locally on CraigsList for a fantastic price! I didn’t have a Wii when I was younger (well, I did briefly… but that story might be for another time) and I’ve had one on my list for a while. Everything works, minus some battery acid damage on one of the Wii remotes, but I’m going to invest some time into repairing that soon.
The seller lived about an hour away, so we met halfway at another used game shop that I hadn’t been to before. After the transaction, I popped inside to grab a couple games as well, including Nights: Journey of Dreams and SSX Blur. I read the Nights comics when I was kid, which were Sega and Archie Comics attempting to see if the series could survive the market. They didn’t, unfortunately, but they were a major influencer in my perhaps misguided desire to become a writer, so I’ve always wanted to try the games. As for SSX, Blur is the only one I haven’t played in the series. SSX Tricky on the GameCube was a gaming staple when I was a kid, so I couldn’t pass this one up when I found it.
All in all, exciting additions to the collection with a lot of games to enjoy.

A lady just casually had a legitimate sealed Majoras Mask and had no idea of the value.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway. We told her the general value and my coworker gave her the details of some of the local collectors or prices she can sell it at. The employees at our store will actively turn product like this back, let you know if it’s money, and educate you. (Our boss won’t pay for sealed or new retro games like this for a myriad of reasons). We’re ethical gamers here. 🤓
I took pictures just because I like taking pictures of the crazy rare stuff that comes in.
She had literally no idea. It was so minty.
Crazy.
