There’s just something that always grabs me with movies about making movies. Seeing a ragtag group of dreamers put in the hard work and creativity it takes to make a film connects with me on such a deep level. That was certainly the case for Superboys of Malegaon, a new Hindi film from director Reema Kagti that just hit Prime Video.
This story, inspired by the 2008 documentary Supermen of Malegaon, is about a group of friends who create their own films with the aim of making something that connects with their community.
The collaboration, creativity, and community of the story deeply connect with viewers. The relationships shared by the group, the innovative solutions to filmmaking constraints, and the way the town of Malegaon embraces the film are so uplifting and heartwarming.
A sequence near the end of the film had me reaching for the Kleenex because I’d been so locked in with the journey of these characters and so invested in their friendships. I didn’t even realize I was crying until I heard myself sniffle!
If you’re a movie lover, don’t miss out on this beautiful story! 📽️

Superboys Of Malegaon Review: An Earnest Love-Letter to Friendship and Filmmaking.
Reema Kagti has quietly produced and directed some really great projects across film and Television in the last decade or so. She hasn’t necessarily found the respect or appreciation that she deserves for it, and unfortunately is still an underrated filmmaker in the Industry. Most people would probably know her only as Zoya Akhtar’s partner. When in fact they make all movies together irrespective…

Superboys of Malegaon Movie Review
Superboys of Malegaon Movie Review: Dreamers Unite in Underdog Film
Superboys of Malegaon (2025) is a Hindi-language coming‑of‑age drama directed by Reema Kagti and written by Varun Grover. Adapted from the acclaimed documentary Supermen of Malegaon (2008), the film brings the true story of amateur filmmakers from Malegaon to life. It follows Nasir Shaikh and his inseparable circle of friends as they cast aside hardships to create their own local spoofs of Bollywood classics — celebrating cinema, friendship, and hope in a town far removed from mainstream glamour.
Cast and Crew of Superboys of Malegaon
Director: Reema Kagti
Writer: Varun Grover
Producers: Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti, Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani
Cinematography: Swapnil S. Sonawane
Editing: Anand Subaya
Music: Sachin–Jigar
Main Cast:
Adarsh Gourav as Nasir Shaikh
Vineet Kumar Singh as Farogh
Shashank Arora as Shafique
Anuj Singh Duhan as Akram
Saqib Ayub as Irfan
Manjiri Pupala as Trupti (supporting role)
Superboys of Malegaon Movie Review: Plot Overview
Set in Malegaon during the late 1990s and 2000s, Superboys of Malegaon chronicles the journey of Nasir, a passionate wedding videographer who entertains his small-town audience with mashups of Charlie Chaplin and Bollywood clips. After a police raid, Nasir, inspired and determined, decides to produce his own spoof films — starting with Malegaon ke Sholay. Alongside writer Farogh, Shafique, and Akram, he takes on the daunting task of filmmaking with scant resources, limited technical expertise, and a wholehearted belief in dreams. Their rise and eventual reunion to grant Shafique his starring moment form the emotional backbone of the story.
Performances and Direction
Adarsh Gourav brings warmth and earnestness to Nasir, navigating vulnerability and unwavering passion.
Vineet Kumar Singh shines as Farogh, the purist screenwriter whose intensity adds meaningful tension.
Shashank Arora delivers a tender, melancholic performance as Shafique — his emotional arc becomes central to the wrap-up.
Director Reema Kagti balances heartfelt comedy and bittersweet drama with care. Critics praise her for crafting a warm tribute to filmmaking’s communal spirit. The Guardian describes the film as a “boisterous heart‑warmer about movie‑loving underdogs,” while the Financial Times calls it a “warm‑hearted Indian love letter to the movies.”
Technical Aspects and Music
Cinematographer Swapnil Sonawane and editor Anand Subaya ensure the narrative flows smoothly across time, place, and emotional tones. The musical score by Sachin–Jigar energizes the film with uplifting beats, perfectly suited for the final homegrown green‑screen spectacle.
Superboys of Malegaon Movie Review: Final Verdict
Superboys of Malegaon delivers a moving underdog tale anchored by genuine performances and authenticity. With a strong 88% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes and praise from critics like Roger Ebert who calls it “one of the most accessible and entertaining movies about the creative urge,” the film wins hearts .
It’s a testament to dreaming big under humble circumstances — proving that you don’t need big budgets or urban polish to make meaningful cinema. A solid 4/5 for celebrating friendship, passion, and the shared magic of making movies.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5)

Story
It tells the story of a man who travels to Ramayapatnam village as a stranger to put an end to the horror and atrocities perpetrated by a prominent notorious criminal organization that has built a crime empire there. Will he be able to fight the gang on his own? Will he be able to conquer the peasants' fears? Will he be able to save himself and the villagers? To find out more, watch and read about jaat review.
Acting and Characters
Sunny Deol's performance as Jaat/Brigadier Baldev Pratap Singh is as impressive as his action films. The way he speaks dialogue, Main Jaat hoon. His film entry with the first song in the movie is from Oh Rama Shri Rama song, and his first action sequence is in the movie itself to keep the audience emotionally engaged with his stunts and acting. He was great in all aspects of his performance, including dialogue delivery, facial expressions, and body language. His chemistry with the other performers was also great. Although he did not perform many physical stunts, his performance was stable. Randeep Hooda's portrayal of Ranatunga is likewise exceptional. He researched his character extensively and behaved emotionally in a very realistic manner. His role was less powerful and smaller than Sunny Deol's, yet he gave it his all. Regina Cassandra's performance as Bharati may also be described as good; she demonstrated her acting abilities in all of her scenes in the film. Saiyami Kher's performance as Vijayalakshmi was also superb; she was given a fair opportunity to showcase her acting abilities in the film and was very effective in doing so. Vineet Kumar Singh's acting in the character of Somulu is good, despite the majority of his sequences involving fights, quarrels, and stunts, he pronounced the voice of Kuku from his mouth in a very wonderful manner which shows his acting ability and may also be described as exceptional. In supporting roles, Jagapathi Babu and Zarina Wahab deliver strong performances. Ramya Krishnan, Murali Sharma, and Upendra Limaye appear as guests, while Urvashi Rautela performs in the item song Touch Kiya.
Direction
This film is directed by Gopichand Malineni, and it is his first Hindi film. He has previously directed films including Don Seenu (2010), Bodyguard (2012), Balupu (2013), Pandaga Chesko (2015), Winner (2017), Crack (2021), and Veera Simha Reddy (2023). He maintained the film's action thriller tone by telling the tale and providing enjoyment. Not only that, but he kept the story moving by having everyone deliver strong performances. He lived up to the audience's feelings and expectations by presenting the film in a unique approach. In one scene of the movie, a female police officer dies without drinking water; this scene has been filmed very emotionally.

Story Screenplay
Gopichand Malineni wrote the film's story and script. The film's story is nothing new, but he portrayed it uniquely, giving the film a sense of freshness. The story's pace has been maintained smoothly. The scenes are well-composed, and the turns are consistent. Dialogue and character development are also acceptable. The screenplay is also strong. After one scene, the audience has no idea what will happen next in the film.
Dialogues
The dialogues in the film were beautifully crafted by Saurabh Gupta and Dr. Sai Madhav Burra fits the movie's tone and theme. Sunny Deol's dialogues are really effective. "Dhai kilo ka haath" is a phrase from his old and successful film Damini (1993).
Editing
Naveen Nooli's editing is fast-paced, although the film's duration is a tad excessive. The film may have been reduced by 10-15 minutes. Certain scenes may have been cut. The editing clarifies the film's story while also maintaining a constant tone and concept. All the sequences take their time moving the tale ahead, making the picture easy to follow. The first half contains no story, yet it is incredibly enjoyable and fast-paced.
Cinematography
Rishi Punjabi handled the cinematography. The image is amazing and moves the story forward. Some scenes have been shot extremely nicely. The film provides excellent depictions of various aerial perspectives. The film's topic has been reflected in the lighting and color scheme. The camera captured the film's settings and set designs effectively.
Action
In Jaat, the action sequences are a visceral spectacle, meticulously crafted by a powerhouse team of four renowned action directors Ram-Laxman, Anal Arasu, V. Venkat, and Peter Hein. Their combined expertise brings an unparalleled intensity to the film's choreography, delivering scenes that are both innovative and adrenaline-pumping. From high-octane car chases to gripping hand-to-hand combat, each sequence is designed to leave audiences on the edge of their seats. Notably, Peter Hein orchestrated a thrilling car chase shot in Hyderabad, while V. Venkat choreographed a dynamic fight scene set within a police station. Ram-Laxman contributed with a formidable shipboard action sequence filmed at Mangalore's Panambur Port, and Anal Arasu added his signature flair to the intense jungle combat scenes. This collaborative effort ensures that Jaat stands out as a benchmark in action cinema, offering a fresh and exhilarating experience for viewers.

Production Design
Avinash Kolla's set designs and locations are appropriate for the plot. The village settings appear authentic. Which is consistent with the story's concept. The set design provided a substantial and immersive atmosphere that effectively conveyed the film's cultural subtleties.
Background Score.
Thaman S's background score has been beautifully used throughout the tale and scenes. It complements the film's theme and tone. It elevates the audience's emotions and transports them to a new level.
Sound Design
Raghunath Kemisetty's sound design is natural and outstanding, helping to connect each scene of the film. The dialogue in the movie is also readily audible, and the sound design is well coordinated with the film.
Costume Design
Costume Design by Rajesh Kamarsu and Ashwin Reddy. The characters' clothing designs are accurate to their personalities and professions. They also reflect the characters' metamorphosis and progress.
Jaat Songs
Amrit Maan's Punjabi song is suited to the story. The second song is based on Lord Shri Ram, and the music is similarly composed.
Choreography
Only one of Ganesh Acharya's songs, Touch Kiya, has acceptable choreography. There was little room for choreography in the film.
Climax
The film's ending is similar to that of old cinema, in which the hero kills the goon, making the destitute people joyful and considering the hero as God.
Rating
***
Opinion
Can be viewed once for Sunny Deol's impressive acting and acrobatics. The most notable aspect of the film is its action and stunts.
Flaws
The film is filled with brutal situations. There is a lot of unwatchable violence, such as a thumb-cutting scene, a neck-holding scene, a neck-cutting scene, people without necks, and so on. Abuse of derogatory phrases such as mada__ch_d and g__aa_n___du, ripping off the garments of female police officers, and raping them.
