“Takin’ Off” by #HerbieHancock is Herbie’s debut album as a leader. It was recorded on May 26, 1962, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Herbie on piano, #DexterGordon on tenor, #FreddieHubbard on trumpet, #ButchWarren on bass and #BillyHiggins on drums. It features Herbie’s classic “Watermelon Man” which made it to the Top 100 of the singles charts and later became a Jazz Standard. This album featured is a #MusicMatterJazz 2-LP 45 RPM that was given to me as a Christmas gift from my daughters. It was mastered by the legendary #KevinGrey and is the best sounding of the three I have in my collection. I arrived in Okinawa back in 1981 with a blue labeled UA copy that was badly scratched and needed to be replaced. My very first Japanese copy I ever purchased was this and “Kind of Blue” and it was my only version until my kids gave me this. My favorite tune from this session is “Three Bags Full” which Herbie named because of each of the three-soloist played out of a different bag. But he also said the name comes from the nursery rhyme “Baa Baa Black Sheep” at one time my youngest grandson’s favorite nursery rhyme. I also purchased the #BlueNoteRecords 80th Anniversary reissue when it was released which was also mastered by Kevin Grey. The only issue I have with this copy is the packaging as the album cover is very cheap and it was shipped in a paper sleeve that I replaced, but the sound quality in this reissue is far superior over my Japanese copy. Maybe because I’ve had the Japanese copy for over 40 years, but I’ve kept it in great shape. If you get a chance to get a 80th anniversary copy I highly recommend it. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife https://www.instagram.com/p/CTuvo2RJGjc/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Tenor Madness” by the great #SonnyRollins was recorded on May 24, 1956, at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey featuring Sonny on tenor, #JohnColtrane on tenor on the title song “Tenor Madness”, #RedGarland on piano, #PaulChambers on bass and #PhillyJoeJones on drums. Sonny who had recorded with #MilesDavis in 1954 and joined his group in 1955, recruited Mile’s “First Great Quintet” to back him up on this session. At the time of this session Sonny was already a member of the #MaxRoach - #CliffordBrown Quintet and two months prior to this session recorded the LP “Sonny Rollins Plus 4” with fellow members from his Roach and Brown Quintet. The historical importance of “Tenor Madness” lies in the title track because it’s the only existing recording with both Sonny and Trane playing together. Trane who was only there visiting the session was asked to do a battle with Sonny which turned into a 12-minute masterpiece. This is an #AnalogueProductions (AP) Prestige Series Mono reissue mastered by the legendary #KevinGrey and pressed at #QualityRecordPressings (QRP) which as always with Kevin’s magic is a beautiful sounding album. Not sure if AP will press any more of this series, but I think they should. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #PrestigeRecords #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection https://www.instagram.com/p/CTiRxRhMhvt/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Saxophone Colossus” by the great #SonnyRollins was recorded on June 22, 1956, at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey featuring Sonny on tenor, #TommyFlanagan on piano, #DougWatkins on bass and #MaxRoach on drums. This was Sonny’s 6th album as a leader and considered his best known as it was selected in 2017 for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically or artistically significant. This mono reissue is part of the #AnalogueProductions Prestige Series mastered by #KevinGrey and pressed at #QualityRecordPressings. Three of the Five selections on this LP were written by Sonny including “St Thomas” a calypso inspired tune named after Saint Thomas in the Virgin Islands which has become a Jazz Standard. The tune “Strode Rode” is Sonny’s way of paying homage to Strode Lounge in Chicago which played a major role during Sonny’s study period in 1955. “Blue 7” a minor blues piece with solos by all starting with Sonny accompanied by Tommy Flanagan and Doug Watkins steady baseline. This is actually my favorite piece on this classic. This reissue is done superbly which is usually the case when the mastering is done by Kevin Grey. The vinyl is very clean, but I don’t have an original to compare. Just a CD. I’m surprised I didn’t pick this up in Okinawa when I was living over there. I did have an OJC copy, but I haven’t seen that copy in years. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #PrestigeRecords #CrateDigging #Jazz #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection https://www.instagram.com/p/CTfxiKvsdG0/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Inventions and Dimensions” by #HerbieHancock is his 3rd album and recorded on August 30, 1963, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Herbie on piano, #PaulChambers on bass, #WillieBobo on drums and #OsvaldoMartinez on percussions. This is a #BlueNoteRecords 80th Anniversary reissue cut from the original analog master tape mastered by the legendary #KevinGrey and its sound quality is beautiful. The only gripe I have with series is the flimsy cover and paper sleeve it was shipped in. I think the folks at Blue Note need to step it up and provide this series with some Tone Poet love when it comes with the jackets. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #bluenote #bluenoterecords #vintagebluenote #bluenotejazz #rudyvangelder #3rdStreetJazz #Jazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CTdh7ZKrZdK/?utm_medium=tumblr

What would have been the great #HoraceSilver 93rd birthday today, I am celebrating by listening to some of his classics that are in my collection. “The Stylings of Silver” was recorded on May 8, 1957 at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey featuring Silver on piano, #ArtFarmer on trumpet, #HankMobley on tenor, #LouisHayes on drums and #TeddyKotick on bass. This is a #MusicMattersJazz reissue cut from the original analog tapes mastered by the legendary #KevinGrey. All tunes were written by Horace except for “My One and Only Love”. In this session it shows how much Horace had grown as a writer, partly because he’s innocent of complacency. As he states, “I try to write in a lot of different grooves. I wrote a waltz for instance, that I’d like to do in the future as a piano solo. I get a kick out of doing different things, working in different veins. Another thing I’d like to do is really get down some more with some of the Latin beats like the samba. The album starts of with the up tempo “No Smokin’” that Horace describes as “a kind of up tempo minor piece that gives everybody a chance to stretch out. There are also some written interludes. I’d had the title in mind for quite a while. ‘Smoke’in slang means to cook, to wail. So that what it means.” The rest of the album is “Smoke’in” as well as the Farmer – Mobley combo was what intrigued me the most when I purchased this album many years ago. This Music Matters Jazz reissue doesn’t disappoint. If you don’t have this in your collection I advise you to grab one if you see it. Have a BLESSED rest of the evening and Happy Heavenly Birthday Blessings Horace! . . . . . #Jazzrecords #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #BlueNoteRecords #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #3rdStreetJazz #RudyVanGelder #BlueNoteJazz #Jazz #HBD https://www.instagram.com/p/CTVXA5jreQe/?utm_medium=tumblr

#JackieMclean classic album “Jackie’s Bag” had the pleasure being recorded at both Van Gelder Studios, the January 18, 1959, session was recorded in his Hackensack, New Jersey studio and the September 1, 1960, session was recorded at the Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey studio. Because of the two dates and gaps between them he has different personnel accompanying him which makes this entire session an all-star cast. Side 1 features McLean on alto, #DonaldByrd on trumpet, #SonnyClark on piano, #PaulChambers on bass and #PhillyJoeJones on drums consisted of three of Jackie’s compositions, “Quadrangle”, “Blues Inn” and “Fidel”. This side shows Jackie’s growth as a writer and shows more effectively than any of his previous compositions his ability to create something more than casual union-line frameworks. With the only common factor of the two sessions was the steady Paul Chambers. Jackie commented on the two different rhythm sections, “I sure had two wild rhythm sections—I wouldn’t name either one of them as my preference. Of course, we got a certain spark, a crackling feeling, with Philly Joe Jones back there, but A.T. (Art Taylor) did just as great a job in a different way. And it’s the same thing with the pianist.” Side 2 features McLean on alto, #BlueMitchell on trumpet, #TinaBrooks on tenor, #KennyDrew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and #ArtTaylor on drums and it consists of two of Jackie’s tunes, “Appointment in Ghana” and “A Ballad for Doll”, and a Tina Brooks composition “Isle of Java”. This side has a distinctly different personality from Side 1 being that you have a strong blowing front line of Jackie, Blue and Tina. This is a #MusicMattersJazz reissue with the beautiful tip-on gatefold jacket with the session pictures on the inside. Of course, the vinyl is quiet and #KevinGrey did his usual phenomenal job remastering it. Not sure if MMJ has any left in their inventory, but if #BlueNoteRecords decides to release this in their “Classic Series” I suggest you buy ASAP. If you do have this in your inventory what pressing do you have? Thanks for your support and have a BLESSED day. #Jazzrecords #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #jazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CTSV6XtLcca/?utm_medium=tumblr
