someone needs to write an au where viola DOES somehow go work for olivia at her than orsino (because she first says that olivia is the one she wants to work for) and they end up in love instead

viola would still be herself and accidentally woo olivia, AND they could bond over the loss of their brothers (even if viola’s ends up being alive)

antonio would still rescue sebastian and they could fall in love

orsino could have his grand conversations about love with feste and then they could fall in love

pros:

- friends to lovers! the chaotic bff energy that never goes away despite their relationship! an ability to just...obviously have so much fun together (which really shouldn’t be rare but in shakespeare ships...kinda is?) so much banter and teasing and lightness until...you know

- on the flip side! nothing will make me lose it for a ship more than one of them dying in the other’s arms and then the other one being forced to be the last survivor...what can i say i love pain

- on a thematic level it mirrors very nicely with juliet/paris bc escalus wants SO badly to stay out of this stupid feud but his stupid cousins are FUCKING PEOPLE ON BOTH SIDES (edit: not actually for juliet/paris but you know)

- the fair youth/poet dynamic....they have it

cons:

- WHERE did benvolio go i want CLOSURE

- the actual evidence is a bit on the “yes they are gay no i will not elaborate” side of things

violivia

pros:

- everything about the “make me a willow cabin at your gate” speech

- the mutual mourning! both of them having lost a brother and finding unexpected happiness in each other! their relationship being such a little microcosm of the way that grief turns to joy in that play :’)

- relatedly, mutual “hope this doesn’t awake anything in me” moments

- olivia is peak unabashedly horny shakespearean woman energy and i love that for her and want her to have everything good in the world

cons:

- olivia didn’t notice she was marrying viola’s identical twin......arguably the attraction is a bit superficial

- does viola love her back? you can for sure play it that way but you can also play it as a tad one-sided

- you can pry viola/orsino and the sheer tenderness of 2.4 from my cold dead hands (but on the other hand it’s twelfth night, a play for multishipping if there ever was one, so perhaps not a true con)
