‘Glee’ alum Darren Criss ready for National Christmas Tree Lighting ahead of Wolf Trap
His breakthrough role arrived on Fox’s “Glee” before winning an Emmy Award on FX’s “American Crime Story.”
This week, actor and singer Darren Criss performs live at the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on The Ellipse outside the White House on Thursday night.
“This is my first year doing this particular event,” Criss told WTOP. “I’ve been lucky enough in my career to have done a number of things for the Bidens. That is a low-key humble brag. They haven’t decided to kick me off the invite list yet, but there’s still room! I could really biff it at the White House.”
He joins a star-studded lineup of Mickey Guyton, Dionne Warwick, Joe Walsh, Ledisi and St. Vincent.
“It’s a pretty cool list, man,” Criss said. “I just saw the list and I don’t know who printed the ad mat, but there’s no world in my mind where I would ever appropriately be anywhere higher or before the likes of St. Vincent, Renee Rapp. … When your name is with the likes of Joe Walsh, Dionne Warwick and many more, you can’t help but just have a huge wave of imposter syndrome.”
After that, “A Very Darren Crissmas” hits The Barns at Wolf Trap in Virginia on Saturday and Sunday.
“We’re just going from town to town spreading holiday cheer, man,” Criss said. “A lot of people put out holiday albums … just playing the very well-known songs. … My main goal in life is not necessarily as a performer but more like a curator. … If I had it my way, my Christmas album would have been 100 songs that no one’s ever heard of, but because I’m not a fool, I toe the line between familiar stuff but I do it in an unfamiliar way.”
Born in San Francisco in 1987, Criss grew up in loving “Star Wars,” “Transformers” and The Beatles. He pursued the arts as a theater major at the University of Michigan, performing in “Pride & Prejudice” and “A Few Good Men” before founding StarKid Productions to produce his own shows. That included the Harry Potter production “A Very Potter Musical,” which actually landed songs on the Billboard charts.
After appearing on the ABC series “Eastwick,” Criss’ big break came on Fox’s “Glee” (2010-2015), playing transfer student Blaine Anderson, who eventually married Kurt Hummel. Criss started out singing Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” and ended by writing the Emmy-nominated song “This Time” for the series finale.
“‘Glee’ was incredibly popular and progressive,” Criss said. “I lucked out and won the golden ticket because when I joined that show, it already had a significant degree of attention where one of the most popular characters was Kurt, somebody who was making waves … in the queer dialogue amongst popular culture, the conversation of gay teens and representation of queer people on mainstream, linear, network television.”
He reunited with Ryan Murphy to play the killer Andrew Cunanan in “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace” (2017), beating out Antonio Banderas, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeff Daniels, John Legend and Jesse Plemons to win the Emmy for Best Actor in a Limited Series.
“Actors wait a whole lifetime for parts like that,” Criss said. “This horrible thing happened because of a guy who happened to kind of look like me and be kind of my age and ethnicity. … Twenty years later, how do we make sure those tragedies don’t end up as these horrible things? To bring light to a darkness by illuminating the things around those tragedies, the other themes that led to how and why these things happened.”
On stage, his Broadway roles include replacing Daniel Radcliffe in “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying” (2012), replacing Neil Patrick Harris in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” (2015) and joining Sam Rockwell and Laurence Fishburne in the revival of David Mamet’s play “American Buffalo” (2022).
“I’ve really gotten to check a lot of boxes in what I believe to still be the earlier part of life and career, boxes that I really did always dream of and worked hard to get to,” Criss said. “Now onto Christmas baby!”

💋 That's SO Fetch!: What To Read After Watching Mean Girls
🩷 Good morning, bookish bats! I actually have a weird, complicated relationship with Mean Girls. After reading Queen Bees & Wannabes, my mother didn't let me watch the 2004 film, as if THAT would somehow protect me from the realities of middle and high school (WOW, feeling old writing this now).
👠 Yet somehow, I CONSTANTLY ended up around people obsessed with the movie (and we love Tina Fey, so, I can't blame a single person). Right before the mess of 2020, I even had the luck of seeing Renee Rapp perform as Regina on Broadway, and WOAH. It was everything (and my little, late-in-life bi heart has a whole new appreciation for it). Funnily enough, my parents and sister were with me, and my mom thought nothing of it. It's been a while since I've done one of these posts (namely because of the strike, though I have a few sitting in my queue), so I figured now was the perfect time. Here are a few books to consider reading if you love Mean Girls!
💋 Wren Martin Ruins It All - Amanda Dewitt 🩷 I Kissed Shara Wheeler - Casey McQuiston 👠 Queen Bee - Amalie Howard 💋 Royal Scandal - Aimée Carter 🩷 Diary of a Confused Feminist - Kate Weston 👠 The Revenge Game - Jordyn Taylor 💋 The Night in Question - Kathleen Glasgow and Liz Lawson 🩷 The Way You Make Me Feel - Maurene Goo 👠 Rivals: American Royals III - Katharine McGee 💋 The Favorite Sister - Jessica Knoll 🩷 Fat Talk - Virginia Sole-Smith 👠 Freaks, Gleeks, and Dawson's Creek - Jennifer Keishin Armstrong and Thea Glassman 💋 Queen Bees & Wannabes - Rosalind Wiseman 🩷 Gossip Girl - Cecily Von Ziegesar 👠 Pretty Things - Janelle Brown 💋 How Not to Be Popular - Jennifer Ziegler 🩷 Some Girls Are - Courtney Summers 👠 Pretty Little Liars - Sara Shepard 💋 Tiny Pretty Things - Dhonielle Clayton and Sona Charaipotra 🩷 One of Us is Lying - Karen M. Whoever the fuck decided to fuck things up during Christmas time can not so kindly fuck themselves. I mean, seriously! You’ve got to be fucked up to wanna fuck someone else’s Christmas up.
Mitch and I are in Miami on a mission to capture a drug lord down here. We’d  been here for a few weeks, trying to locate him while talking to his customers to get his location. Once we found him, we tried to “arrest” him, but drastic measures had to be taken.
Packed up and ready to leave the Jacksonville International Airport on our flight back to Virginia when an announcement came over the PA saying that all flights to Virginia have been canceled for the rest of the day and into the night due to the snow.
After we left the airport, we found a hotel to stay in for the night.
“Here comes Santa Claus, Here comes Santa Claus, right down Santa Claus lane,” I sang. Mitch looked at me like I was crazy as my eyes met his. “What?”
“You’re crazy,” he said.
“Crazy for loving Christmas?”
He nodded his head.
“Well, lucky for you, I went and bought decorations and a few other things while we’re stuck in this room for the next 24 hours.” I placed a bag down on the bed, taking off my jacket. Going through the bag, I started singing the song again - well, more like humming it to myself.
I started decorating the room, hearing the rustle of the bag behind me, smiling a little to myself. Seeing Mitch at the glass door in the corner of my eye, I watched as he placed those stick on decorations to it.
We spent the next few minutes decorating our room before I decided to ask him, “When’s the last time you celebrated Christmas?”
His shoulders slumped a little before he looked me in the eyes, giving his answer, “Before Katrina died.”
I knew about Katrina. I watched the news about the beach attack and read all the articles on it. I felt so bad, but I also wanted to keep stuff like that from happening again… so I joined the CIA.
I looked down as I messed with the decoration in my hand for a moment before I whispered, “I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright,” he said. “Did you get anything else at the store?”
Thinking face on, I turned around and looked through the grocery bags, finding a box of hot chocolate mix that I forgot about. “I did!” I showed him the blue box with snowy mountains on it. “Want some?”
Mitch nodded his head, a hint of a smile in his eyes. He grabbed the box from me, heading to the single serve coffee machine on the counter. After he filled the styrofoam cup with water, he put it in the back of the machine before putting the cup under the machine where the water comes out.
Once both cups had water in them, he grabbed the plastic spoons that I also bought and put them into the cups before grabbing the packets of hot chocolate. At the same time, we poured the powdered mix into our cups, a smile spread across my face.
A few minutes later, I decided to give Mitch something. Reaching into my bag, I grabbed his gift and handed it to him. “Here,” I said. “For you.”
He opened it, finding a new black Henley and a razor kit. He looked at me, confused, so I went ahead and answered his question.
“The Henley is to replace the one that got all ripped to hell during the mission, and the razor kit is to help keep that facial hair in check.”
He looked back down at it and whispered, “You didn’t have to.” Looking back up at me, he said, “I didn’t get you anything.”
I waved him off, telling him it was no big deal. I really didn’t want anything, anyway. Well, there was one thing I wanted; to see my family, but I wasn’t going to tell him that.
Mitch and I spent the rest of the night watching whatever Christmas movie was on TV while drinking our hot chocolates. I don’t even know when I fell asleep!
But what I do know is, when I woke up, there was a message from Mitch on the nightstand, saying, “Went to get some coffee from your favorite coffee place. Thanks for making this the best Christmas mission ever.”

Leap Year: A Lost Comedy Classic
RELEASED JAN 11, 1924
Leap Year is a silent comedy film directed by and starring Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, one of the most popular and influential comedians of the early cinema era. The film was produced in 1921, but it was never released in the United States due to Arbuckle's involvement in the Virginia Rappe death scandal, which tarnished his reputation and career. The film received its first release in Finland in 1924, and it finally saw an American release of sorts in 1981.
Tumblr media
The film follows the misadventures of Stanley Piper (Arbuckle), a wealthy heir who is in love with his nurse, Phyllis Brown (Mary Thurman). His uncle, Jeremiah Piper (Lucien Littlefield), is a misogynist who wants to keep Stanley away from women, as he believes that Stanley falls in love with every woman he meets. He sends Stanley on a fishing trip, but Stanley ends up getting engaged to three different women: Loris Keene (Harriet Hammond), a movie star; Molly Morris (Gertrude Short), a waitress; and Irene Rutherford (Maude Wayne), a socialite. Stanley tries to get out of his predicaments by faking illnesses and fits, but his plans backfire hilariously. Meanwhile, Phyllis and the other characters find their own romantic interests, leading to a happy ending for everyone.
Leap Year was Arbuckle's first feature film, and it was different from his two-reel shorts in several ways.
Leap Year had a more complex and coherent plot than his shorts, which were mostly based on gags and situations. The film had multiple subplots and characters, and it followed a clear narrative arc. Arbuckle's shorts were more episodic and improvised, and they often ended with a chase or a fight.
Leap Year had more dialogue and intertitles than his shorts, which relied more on visual humor and physical comedy. The film had many witty and sarcastic lines, and it also used some sound effects, such as a phonograph and a telephone. Arbuckle's shorts had fewer and simpler intertitles, and they used music and sound effects sparingly.
Leap Year had more satire and parody than his shorts, which were more slapstick and absurd. The film mocked the Hollywood lifestyle, the celebrity culture, and the social norms of the 1920s. Arbuckle's shorts were more playful and whimsical, and they often spoofed other genres, such as westerns, melodramas, and thrillers.
Leap Year had more romance and sentimentality than his shorts, which were more cynical and anarchic. The film had a happy ending for all the couples, and it showed Arbuckle's softer and sweeter side. Arbuckle's shorts were more edgy and irreverent, and they often showed him as a troublemaker, a womanizer, or a victim of fate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leap Year is a showcase of Arbuckle's comedic talents, as he displays his physical agility, facial expressions, and timing. He also co-directed the film with James Cruze, and co-wrote the script with Sarah Y. Mason and Walter Woods. The film features many gags and situations that are typical of the slapstick genre, such as chases, falls, pies, and mistaken identities. The film also parodies the Hollywood lifestyle, as Arbuckle interacts with various celebrities and filmmakers, such as Sidney Bracey, who plays Loris Keene's press agent. The film also has some risqué humor, such as Arbuckle swimming in a full suit and hat, and pretending to be a woman to escape from his fiancées.
VLeap Year is a rare gem that deserves more recognition and appreciation from film fans and historians. It is a testament to Arbuckle's genius and resilience, as he made the film during a difficult time in his life. It is also a reminder of the potential that he had, and the legacy that he left behind. Leap Year is a film that will make you laugh, and also make you wonder what could have been.

9 Fandom Peeps to Get to Know Better
@dual-domination tagged me. Thank u! It was really fun
3 ships you like: I started thinking about this one and I realized that I have away less ships that I actually engage with than I thought, but, Shen Wei x Zhao Yulan (my currently obsession), Andrew x Neil from All for the Game (love love love them) and Aziraphale x Crowley from Good Omens.
First ship ever: God, this one bring *so* many memories hahah it was Mu x Aolia and Milo x Camus from Saint Seiya. Ironically, I never read the manga or watched the anime, I just found one day and randomly strated reading the fics, after that I read/watched The Lost Canvas and it was that. And from something that I *have* actually readed/watched: Kanda Yu x Allen Walker from D.Grey-man.
Last song you heard: To Well by Reneé Rapp
Favourite childhood book: "Um trem de janelas acesas", " A fada que tinha ideias" and "Loló Barnabé". "Loló Barnabe" was the first "real" book with lots of words that I got to read (I thought I was so grown up at the time hahah) and to this day is a favourite. It is the only one of the three that I don´t have anymore though :(
Currently reading: Catched up with the translation of "Lie Huo Jiao Chou" (and now I am suffering wainting) by Priest, started reading "Mrs Dalloway" by Virginia Woolf, and in the midlle of "Capitães de Areia" by Jorge Amado.
Currently watching: Just finished Hotel Hazbin (loved it), and gotta finish The Favourite By Yorgos Lanthimos that I paused yesterday.
Currently consuming: Right now? Water.
Currently craving: Chocolate. And brownies.
