ITF M25 Heraklion (Nov 6) R2: Yshai Oliel [7] def. Niels Visker 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(7) Match Recap

Carrying on the play in this week’s ITF M25 Heraklion is the rematch of last week’s quarterfinals in the second round between seventh seed Yshai Oliel, who yesterday defeated Adrian Bodmer 6-4, 6-4 in a supposed rematch of last week’s second round, and Niels Visker, who defeated qualifier Aaron Cohen 6-2, 6-1 in the first round. Realizing the second meeting within two weeks, this could be interesting to see how Oliel responded to whatever happened last week, as well as his ability to come up with an answer to Niels’ own depth and aggression as the match progressed.
Oliel had an aggressive start from his forehand side by mostly going after Niels’ forehands. The latter’s frequent errors while trying to respond to Oliel’s forehand led the seventh seed to break early 1-0 before he consolidated the lead to 2-0. Subsequently, Oliel almost broke when his forehand winner in response to Niels’ preceding forehand let cord moment led him to force the deuce, but Niels still managed to hold his service game to 2-1. Since then, Oliel did not look back and trusted his aggression, leaving Niels a little to no chance to create or convert his chances from the baseline, where he then earned the opportunity to serve for the first set 5-4. Without any further hesitations, Oliel took the first set 6-4 at the cost of Niels’ forehand misfire on the former’s serve.

The second set became a turning point for Niels once he realized the usefulness of his backhands during the pressure points, constructing his points from there while aiming at Oliel’s forehands at times. Even though Oliel earlier had his chances, including when Niels double-faulted, the last few deciding points had the set go in Niels’ favor. One of those came from the fourth game, where Niels finished a rally through his forehand pass a shot after Oliel’s volley in response to his previous drop shot, which paved the way for one of his break points before Oliel went on to save them thanks to his backhand error and an unreturned serve, eventually holding his service game to 2-2 thanks to another unreturned serve. However, the clutch appearance was insufficient when Niels poached Oliel’s possible forehand pass midway through his volley, and ended up having a reflexive volley to finish a point with his backhand as the intermediary in a baseline exchange to open the gateway before he ultimately broke to 5-3 at the cost of Oliel’s forehand error. As a result, Niels took the second set 6-3, bringing the match to the deciding set.

The deciding set went deep after both players keep holding their service games, with their offensive capabilities and point construction at stake, as well as having a more solid service game to top it off. After seven consecutive holds, Oliel found out the match could have been an out-passing contest with his passing shot opening his chance up a little bit to be one point ahead in the eighth game, but Niels held his service game to 4-4 afterward. Despite his chances two games later, Niels came up with a forehand down-the-line winner to secure his game point before holding his service game to 5-5. Ultimately, two games later, the tie-break was inevitable to find out who stood out from this match.
In the third set tie-breaker, Oliel initially had the mini-break lead to 4-3 at the cost of Niels' forehand +1 error, which was fired too wide. However, Niels then responded with a forehand down-the-line winner for an equalizer to 4-4 before another double fault 2 points later created Oliel's original match point to 6-4. Two volley winners from Niels, both on serve and on return, saved Oliel's match points before the latter came up with another one thanks to his unreturned serve, but was saved again due to his forehand error to Niels' preceding forehand. Oliel's forehand winner afterward, which turned out to be in after an extremely close call, created his fourth match point, which was immediately converted to take the third set 7-6(7), securing his ticket to the quarterfinals to seal the day in singles.
In the quarterfinals, Oliel will face a potential junior in Arthur Gea, who earlier stunned qualifier Sasa Markovic 6-1, 6-1 in the second round. Knowing A. Gea's tremendous potential in his young age, this could be interesting to see how Oliel holds his aggression and pacing up against last week's runner-up, especially considering both his depth and margin of error from today. This could be a close encounter on both players' peaks, but this can also end up being an exciting match-up in general to look forward to, maybe a talent or goat-off as the pinnacle.

ITF M25 Heraklion (Oct 30) QF: Niels Visker def. Yshai Oliel 6-1, 7-6(5) Match Recap
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Niels Visker's point to 1-0* 40-ad (several points before the break, top left), to break 4-0 (top right), Yshai Oliel's point to *5-1 40-ad (latest break point, bottom left), and Niels Visker's point to take the first set 6-1 (bottom right) (📸 ITF Media)
In this week's ITF M25 Heraklion, Niels Visker stunned fourth seed Cezar Cretu 6-4, 7-5 in the first round before defeating Sidane Pontjodikromo 7-5, 6-4 to advanc3 to the quarterfinals. He then faced Yshai Oliel, who advanced to the quarterfinals at the cost of wild card Adrien Bodmer's withdrawal from their second round encounter, and previously having a hard-fought victory against qualifier Louis Dussin 7-6(5), 7-5 in the first round. While this match looked even on paper, Niels somehow started dominantly before the tie-breaker decided the outcome of the match.
Niels' dominant start was already felt in the beginning of the first set, where he tried to press Oliel from the baseline. Other than Oliel's unforced errors, which mostly came from shots being fired too wide or netted, Niels' notable chance came from a forehand winner to create one of his break points. Although Oliel tried to foil them even with an ace, it was insufficient for him to stay in his pace as he got broken early (2-0) afterward out of his forehand error. Niels proceeded to double the break at both the cost of Oliel's +1 error out of his first strike, as well as a cross-court one-handed backhand winner for the eventual break (4-0).
Oliel proceeded to hold his service game two games later despite surviving a bagel, and tried to raise his game starting the end of the first set, which was marked by numerous break points on his behalf. One of those chances came from a working vollwy to Niels' volley error, but it was insufficient due to his follow-up unforced error. At the end of the day, Niels still managed to hold his service game, ultimately serving the first set breadstick with an ace (6-1).

Yshai Oliel's point to 0-1* 0-40 (initial break point, top left), to save the match point to 6-6(6-5, top right), and Niels Visker's point to convert his match point to 7-6(5, bottom) (📸 🎥 ITF Media)
Oliel started having his own chances again in the second set, but to no avail as Niels came in a clutch to save them, and his aggression stood until the end of the match. One of those came from Niels' volley that went too wide after an error spree, but Niels still held his service game to 1-1. The second set went on 8 consecutive holds before the eleventh game became the see-saw game with Oliel once again having his chances, but Niels still held his service game and the tie-break then was inevitable 2 games later. Oliel's double fault resulted in Niels' mini-break to 5-3, and the latter had a match point thanks to his forehand winner several points later. Oliel tried to get back in the match by saving one match point through his forehand winner to 6-6(6-5), but it was not enough thanks to Niels' forehand to Oliel's forehand error, which resulted in Niels taking the second set 7-6(5), as well as advancing him to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Niels will face Arthur Gea, who defeated Sebastian Gima 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals several moments after. Knowing A. Gea's potential, this could be a tricky affair for Niels to maintain his aggression and pacing, with return depth being in sight. This could be that one kind of a close match, but it definitely would be interesting to see how both of them hold up. Should be an interesting encounter to look forward to!
