VR Lab

As part of my investigation into alternate controllers my class went to the VR lab at West Suffolk Uni Campus to try out their Oculus headesets the games and experiences I played are listed below:

I really enjoyed this process and I enjoyed exploring using an Oculus headset as I had never had the chance to use one before. The image below shows my friend using the headset as I couldn't get a photo of myself. This was a really fun and informative experience.

Amazing Spider-Man #18 Review

Now then, its time for the big Spider storyline that Nick Spencer has been hinting at since his run began. Time to see what exactly Kraven and his lackeys, Black Ant and Taskmaster, have turned Central Park into and how exactly this will give Kraven a lasting legacy. And after how strong the writing before this issue was, I have high hopes.

We open with Spidey and all the animal villains sprinting into the woods of Central Park, an army of robotic Kravens in hot pursuit. As we see each of the villains attempt their own routes out of there, we get to see the strength of robots, the energy shield containing everyone, and the strange interactions the Kraven bots seem to be sharing. After thinking for a second the young Kraven that attacked him was one of these bots, Spidey snaps out of that and begins to question what the hell exactly these Kraven bots are.

We receive the answer directly from their creator, as he does his best to sell the tech behind them to a crowd of wealthy ‘hunters’. The robots are piloted by them, using a VR headset that connects directly to their cerebral cortex. And then, once they enter credit card information, they can arm and armor the bots to their specifications just by buying those weapons and unique little doodads (Totally not a jab at video game microtransactions). And after the demonstration from a man showing how this headeset works by taking out the anger from his crappy life on a poor villain, Arcade has...quite a few interested customers. 

After a quick flash to Spidey to establish all the things he fear could happen during this whole event, he focuses in on his hallucination of MJ in danger from last issue. We jump to MJ, doing her best to distract herself from her boyfriend being in some danger by dancing to music. Although it doesn’t help once she turns on the news and sees the shield around Central Park. So now she’s worried as hell, but can’t exactly help Peter when literally a dozen heroes can’t defeat this shield. Jumping back to Spidey, he saves Gibbon before Gibbon and Vulture abandon Spider-Man for their own devices. 

A quick flash through of all the villains being taken down by the Kraven bots later, we arrive to Black Ant and Taskmaster sitting in a tree as they discuss what they will use their payday from this job for. Except Taskmaster missed one target and decides now is his time to take care of that last target, tazing Black Ant before declaring how he asked that Ant’s bounty be doubled/ And then Taskmaster leaves.

After one more quick flash as we see Vulture abandon Gibbon as a distraction for the Kraven bots, we go back to MJ as she jolts awake, a centipede in her hair that she quickly disposes out the window. And as she settles back down to try to sleep, her narration boxes are replaced by a pervasive set of purple narration boxes that have been cropping up throughout the issue. A set of narration boxes belonging to the Centipede Man who has been stalking Peter and his villains since this run began, hovering MJ.

This is yet another case where while the story is great, it is the art that pushes it over the edge. And with Humberto Ramos, one of the top tier artists in the industry doing his magic on this comic, the art definitely brings the thunder. Motion is conveyed extremely well, the hectic action of all these villains trying to escape being conveyed so clearly. But the true stand out is the character designs, with the Kraven bots giving this strange combination of the Hunter’s traditional mystique alongside the cold, alien nature of something like the Terminator. I adore this run to pieces and if you are a Spider-Man fan, you are doing yourself a disservice by not reading this run, and this event in particular. I get the feeling this will be the Kraven story to talk about years from now.
